NEWS

In this new gen of consoles, Microsoft strikes first with bundling a game with the console. They're releasing a limited run of TitanFall branded console box. Other than giving away a free copy of TitanFall, I don't see the point of this (as people would be buying both at this point anyways) but okay I guess.

For an IP they don't own and it's not exclusive to them, Microsoft really is going all out to pimp TitanFall.

SEGA slashing profit forecast by just over a third. I own two pachinko machines, I've got no room for more

On one hand, Konami has dropped the price on the "next" gen retail release of Ground Zeroes to $30 to make it on par with the digital release. On the other, that was on the hot heels that it came out that this is what everyone expected, a demo that's about 2 hours long.

So Dean Hall, creator of DayZ is bouncing from the project by the end of the year. Should be interesting in how far along the game is when that happens as it's in a very rough alpha shape atm.

EU is still trying to save you from you by looking at Free to Play games. This is way out of my wheel house and I couldn't get anyone to respond when I tried to ask some questions but this sounds to me that this is more encompassing than just going after the F2P market.

GOP gonna GOP. Now, if the GOP wants to get rid of the tax break for the videogame industry, sure fine but when you frame it that making "violent" videogames makes you disqualified, I Can't help but read it as"Dear young people, FUCK YOU".

• We finally get a release date for the upcoming Trials Fusion, out of April 16th for PC, 360, Xbox One and PS4.

YAY! Finally getting an official English release of the first Shin Megami Tensei game. It's hitting the iOS on March 18th for $7.99.

So Swrve released a paper saying that 0.15% of mobile gamers pay about 50% of all in-game purchases. Whales, I'm okay with you for making gaming cheaper.

Stuff I've been playing

This game called Out There came out last week on iOS and damn is it a good little game. It's a mash of space exploration/resource management and random events. For $4, it's a lot of bang for the buck.

Also in the Xbox One update preview thing so I've been testing that out and it fixes most of the quibbles people have with the UI and features outside of no external HDD support

Also got to play some Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare and if EA's servers weren't crap, that game would be a ton of fun. It needs a balance patch but the few rounds I did get to play is a really competent game and quite a bit of fun.

New Releases

South Park: The Stick of Truth (PS3, 360, PC) - After countless delays due to the whole THQ going tits up, Obsidian's game finally comes out. And since the US is cooler than everyone else, all of the versions here are being released uncut.

Walking Dead: Season 2: Episode 2 (PC, PS3) - Well, at least it didn't take 4 months for a new episode of this to be released like the Fables game. Wonder if this one will be an hour long like the second episode of Fables.

Awesomenauts Assemble (PS4)- A console finally gets a version of Awesomenauts that is up to date. Could never get into this game myself but I know it has it's fans.

I really need to get my priorities straight when it comes to drinking on the weekend.

3 Been playing a lot of Star Trek Online lately as well as Don't Starve. I had a chance to try betas of both Elder Scrolls Online, which I hated, and Wildstar, which I loved. ESO looks beautiful but and if you like Elder Scrolls game you might like it. Wildstar has cartoonish animation but its a pretty fun and fast paced game that doesn't take it self too seriously. I have been tempted to get Banished or Starbound on steam, does anyone have experience with either of those?

Good I'm ready for the next part of TWD.  Someone mentioned Banished last week.  And I looked at it and decided to give it a shot.  Its not a bad game.  I've only done one town on a small map on easy.  I've only had one period where I was having trouble with food production and started having a bunch of people die off.  I did manage to correct that though.  I'll probably give higher difficulty a shot sometime.

And Stick of Truth is really tempting me.  I just don't want Butters dangling a floppy wiener in my face.

Posted by: buzzion at March 02, 2014 12:15 PM (LI48c)

5 yeah, I liked the Wildstar beta. Doesn't do anything new outside of the standard themepark mmo but what it did was really nice.

I thought Titanfall was an Xbox exclusive for some reason.

7 Ok, I have a question. I bought the Xbox 360 for Halo, loved the whole Halo series. I was wondering if I should buy PS4 for Last of Us. I saw the game and started to get sucked into it, but realized I have nothing to play it on. I had thought about buying an Xbox 1 but none of my games will work on it, so I am mad at Microsoft. None of my games will work on the PS4 either, but I'm not mad at Sony.

9 Being broke, I've decided to spend a couple weeks on Star Trek Online myself. It's better thought out than the last two star trek TV series and the last two movies, IMHO. I think it still needs work.

BTW, is there a moron fleet anywhere? I saw a ship called the "Ace of Spades" in Bajor's sector yesterday.

10 Drew my girl and I have been playing banished and it is a very fun, addictive little game. the content wears thin after a bit but the author is working to make it mod-able which will be awesome it was the top selling game on steam last week so there's that

11 Going to buy a downloadable PC game from Amazon today, like soon so it downloads while I'm out doing errands, don't know what to buy. I got Civ3 a couple weeks ago, like it, but want something newer. Cost matters, but only up to a certain point, I have Amazon gift card quatloos that I don't count as real money, just don't want to get ripped off. Thinking maybe that South Park game?

12 ESO's bugginess doesn't seem to have improved over the last few weeks at all. It is beautiful but frustrating, and the interface seems a little harder to use than the last beta. I can't actually remember if it had a minimap last time, but if it did they got rid of it, and the main map isn't that useful. Simplifying the quickbar was a good move, but it also seems much harder to manage. Oh and they are live-streaming players now, and the NDA is no longer in effect. Crafting supplies and drops are still pretty imbalanced - rare is too rare, you're left simply unable to do a lot of things. Some crafts are much easier to get supplies for. There are still some odd bugs, like random non-chest containers are still an account-wide unlock (at least in some areas) - so if you loot an area, make a new character and go there, it's pre-looted. Tons of interface errors. I wish I could quickslot /reloadui. Some of the characters and dialogue are very good, but there are still gaps, and a number of quest-breaking bugs, including main quests. Yeah, it's a beta, but most of the bugs are the same as last time AFAICT. Is the new P vs Z on PC now? I haven't looked, I ignored it when it came out only for apple or other devices or whatever it was. The original was fun but had flaws (like single user account you had to delete to start a new game at the first level).

The Last of Us is amazing and if you were planning on getting a next gen console, then there you go.  I'm holding out to upgrade until Destiny comes out and I'm planning on going PS4 for that and The Order (still pissed about that horrible new trailer for it).

I'm peeved that neither the XBox One or PS4 is backwards compatible since my plan was to trade in my PS3 for a PS4.  I do sort of understand the compatibility issues but still.

I'm not even a gamer, I think I gravitated to them because they're generally apolitical and harmless, unlike so much other stuff.

Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at March 02, 2014 04:21 PM (kwc/t) Badonkadonk (kwc/t) First of all, it has good points, like overall space combat, lots of options, tons of story material, and lots of places to explore. Second, it's a Cryptic game, so it's a bug fest and some of them will simply never be fixed. Thirdly, I don't know of a moron fleet, maybe there should be one. I play irregularly so I am only a member of a pretty dead fleet to avoid being spammed with fleet invites. I actually have a lot of tips and tricks about the game, there's a lot to learn. For example, you can trade dilithium gathered in-game for C-Market coins normally bought with cash. Duty Officer missions, if you haven't started them, can be highly lucrative, especially on the Klingon faction side (but both really - the Klingons can just clean up with Contraband, which can be turned in for dilithium). The Chat window? There are custom channels you can add to it for fleets, tips and tricks, faction information, duty officer jobs, etc. You just missed out on the free Dyson Sphere ships if you just joined, but they have things like that a lot. The Summer event was super-easy and the ship wasn't bad, the Winter event was pretty annoying.

22 I am still holding out hope for an old Sega game to come back to life, Herzog Zwei please come back to me Also there was an old turned-based game with a character called Nei that was in your party, and when she died I cried, like literally. Her twin eventually joined your party, but it was never the same I will have my revenge on those who took Nei from me, and from those who keep Herzog Zwei out of my grasp

23 I'm looking forward to Destiny, but it will be out for the 360, so I couldn't use that excuse for this one. I am on the fence about getting another console device. I am not in their age demographics for marketing, but I do enjoy a game with an interesting story. And sometimes I just want to shoot things.

42 I bought a full arcade machine off of Craig's list. A Strikers 1945 cabinet in working order, but the red gun was out on the CRT and the joysticks a bit wonky. I bought a tube rejuvenator and that fixed the color on the monitor, and I put a 60 in 1 PCB in there, and it is a ton of fun and super nostalgic. It is amazing the difference between games published in 1982 and 1984. And the difference between the PCB on the original game and the 60 in 1. The new one is about 1/4 the size, yet has so many more games. The sounds bring back memories. I have about $400 total in the machine now.

Posted by: blaster at March 02, 2014 12:53 PM (4+AaH)

43 Forgot to mention I replaced the joysticks, too. The kids are all into their PC games, minecraft, mostly, but they dig the cabinet with the arcade classics.

Posted by: blaster at March 02, 2014 12:54 PM (4+AaH)

44 Love Skyrim.  Hated Fallout 3.  I know it's the same basic premise, but I've never liked the post-apocalyptic stuff, so I shouldn't have gotten it in the first place.  My mistake.

I'd prefer Skyrim on the PC, because you can use console commands to get past some of the glitches you just have to accept on the 360, but I can't afford a new PC at the moment.  So I cope.  ::sigh::

Does anyone know if a new Elder Scrolls game is coming out any time soon?

46 All I have to do is move the connector from one PCB to the other, I can play the original game, too. Only real issue is that there are no graphics on the cabinet except for the marquee, otherwise it is painted black. A little beat up, I may sand it down, repaint it, and order some multi arcade graphics off of eBay.

54 I had a buddy that built an arcade machine for someone else.  Wired up all the buttons, using a computer, and just dumping in a ton of classic arcade games into it.  Not sure how it eventually turned out though.  I know they also had the ball on it too that is required to do the arcade bowling or golf wired in as well.

Posted by: buzzion at March 02, 2014 01:03 PM (LI48c)

55 @50 my original plan was to go MAME. I had a friend that was all into it probably ten years ago. There were a TON of cabs for no working machines for under $100 for a while, I didn't pull the trigger, they all disappeared. As I looked into MAME, seems the Linux version has all but disappeared, and versionitis has crept in, and you have to make sure that the ROM rip and the MAME you are running are friendly, and it is all a bit fiddly. I hate fiddly anymore. I just want shit to work. The PCB was $65 bucks and worked plugnplay to the JAMMA connector in the cabinet. Power supply, monitor, controls, they just worked.

58 I'm still on "Grim Fandango".

It is not easy - from a technical standpoint. I am on a 64bit Windows 7 here. It does not play well with 32bit crapplications especially of the Windows 95 generation. So I have to save often in case the next screen is where the sound / music (usually) gets in an infinite loop or (more rarely) the whole app freezes up.

I just started Year Three. I can think of one serious critique of the game, especially in Year Two - there's just too much walking from frame to frame. My GOD this is boring. Why not a map system to teleport from place to place? Even Kings Quest III had that.

Otherwise I like the noir details; it's a very funny story with some scary bits.

I hate post-apocalyptic, btw, because these days they are too close to reality, and I play games to get away from excessive gloom and doom. FRPG suits me a lot better.

Skyrim is amazing and the learning curve for it is fairly forgiving. Of course, I finally caved and got the 360 version due to a lovely congruence of gift card and price drop so I can't speak for the PC version.

I didn't say she was but Page herself made accusations of the character being based on her. Apparently, she believes she has an exclusive on grown women who look like androgynous teens. What I was suggesting was that the person who cobbled together the rumor has a certain obsession that undermines the claim. Unless there was already a standing commitment, porting 'Beyond: Two Souls' is highly improbable. There is no shortage of far more successful PS3 titles that would better serve selling the PS4. An 'Uncharted' enhanced collection, for example, would be very attractive to those who never owned a PS3.

The 3DO never lived up to its promise but you have to keep it in context of when it hit the market. CD-ROM was still newish as a PC peripheral, and the only widely available CD-ROM gaming systems were add-ons for the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 systems. Myst was doing a lot of business as much for its being a CD-ROM demo as a game worth playing. The amountof hassle involved in getting it working properly on a PC made the 3DO version impressive by comparison. You just stuck the disc in and it just worked, with better color depth than was then supported on the PC version.

The only aspect of my 3DO I regret is buying it too early for nearly $400. A year later it would be down by at least $100 and dropping as the months passed. But I'd sold off my TurboGrafx system and all its stuff, feeling I'd done everything worth doing with it, and was eager for a big jump.

114 Been playin' Earth Defense Force 2025 non-top ever since I got it on Friday.

It is all kinds of fun. Got a graphics bump (the original was a Dreamcast game), more enemies, more weapons.

It' s a tad repetitive because all you  do in all of the 50+ missions is kill bugs and giant robots, but the emotional ROI you get out of it is totally worth it.

118 @115 K. Disappointed. For Skyrim noobs I suggest alchemy as soon as possible. Ingredients are lying around and potions can do anything. Best way to make money and makes every sort of player super powerful at high levels. 122 I am still holding out hope for an old Sega game to come back to life, Herzog Zwei please come back to me

Check out mmogrinder.net. It's many episodes back but here's a game name of Air Mech, or something similar which basically is PvP Herzog Zvei.

Also there was an old turned-based game with a character called Nei that was in your party, and when she died I cried, like literally.

Phantasy Star 2. And you should include a spoiler tag for stuff like that.

Or Palma exploding.

123 Merovign: I have a tier 5 escort that I dislike, my character's an engineer, I may switch over to a cruiser if I get enough dilithium. I have the Ambassador-class ships from one of the earlier events, although I need advice on a decent loadout so I can actually survive a fight with the Borg.

Would loading a cruiser up with transphase torpedoes work?

I have a mishmash of weapons on the escort, with 3 various cannons and a torp launcher up front, and 3 plasma turrets in the rear weapon slots. I had trouble with the Cardassian Front mission until I switched to turrets, then everything became easy mode. Then I got the quest chain in Gamma Orionis space, and everything became hard again.

Maybe just being an engineer in a tactical ship is doing things the hard way?

Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at March 02, 2014 02:40 PM (kwc/t)

124 Okay, Thanks, I see that it's not multiplayer, that's cool. I once again assumed incorrectly and thought that pretty much all of the newish games had that capability. I've never played m-p, so I probably wouldn't have anyway.

125 Maybe just being an engineer in a tactical ship is doing things the hard way? Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at March 02, 2014 06:40 PM (kwc/t) It is. It's possible but the Tactical character's abilities work well with the Escort and less so with the Cruiser, and vice versa. The thing I actually like least about the game is that it's completely made for "spreadsheet gamers," with a bazillion combinations of abilities and equipment, some of which are strong and others weak, and some work better against some enemies than others. There are websites (and parts of the STO forums) dedicated to optimal builds and ability use. I play a variety of different classes and ships so I am far, far away from trying to memorize those builds. When I do equip a ship I at least refer to them, though I'm sure I'm not as optimized as the people who obsess over that. Most MMOs are built for that kind of person, because the obsessives will give a lot more input and feedback on the process. My sole Engineer character has an old Odyssey T5 Cruiser from the Odyssey giveaway a couple of years ago, which is actually not perfectly ideal but it works pretty well. Also if you're having trouble it's easy to spend some time in lower-level areas to get the hang of it. Turrets are more often found on cruisers because the cruisers turn slowly and can slot more guns - turrets do little damage but can fire any direction. On the other hand, Escorts usually face the enemy so rear turrets can at least get some hits in. Different types (phaser, plasma, polaron, etc) are also better agains different kinds of shields and armor. I think it's too complicated but "spreadsheet gamers" eat that stuff up because they have an edge when they do hours and hours of homework. Feels too much like a job to me. The "use your abilities" part is especially important for engineers. I was in a T4 Constellation with my engineer, and while I usually ignore/avoid PVP areas I was in one, and attacked by the huge T5+ Romulan super-warbird and a couple of T4s, and it drove them nuts they *could not kill me*. I couldn't kill them either, of course, but those defensive and repair abilities mean a lot. They also completely ****** *everyone* on both sides out of the area mission awards because of their dickishness, but that's why I avoid PVP areas.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at March 02, 2014 03:05 PM (qyfb5)

126 Also the "event ships" in STO are nice because you don't need to spend dilithium. See my note above about dilithium, there are lots of ways to get it, especially with duty officer missions (sending your crew on missions while you do other things, basically at no or little cost to you). I've got cruisers, escorts, destroyers (tactical science ships), carriers, the Risian Corvette, and the Odyssey (for a couple of characters anyway) for "free" basically by doing certain missions or event missions (the event missions tend to be longer, i.e. do a short mission every day for 23-25 days during the month+ event).

128 Not mentioned but the new Thief game is getting weak reviews. Very disappointing, I may play Dishonored again and wait for a price drop. I started playing Skyrim on PC recently and really enjoying playing with dozens of mods, though after a point the PC really struggles with it. Whoever mentioned the Rich Merchants mod, thanks, makes selling loot much less frustrating.

Posted by: waelse1 at March 02, 2014 03:23 PM (3tdM4)

129 I play some STO, I just hang out in a huge fleet so I can take advantage of all the people who play much more than I do building all the cool fleet things. Haven't been into it much lately. In the MMO space I've recently fallen into Final Fantasy XIV, totally surprised with how easy it's been to get into and how much fun I've been having. Looking forward to Titanfall in a couple of weeks, I was quite impressed with the demo after not expecting much of it. For Thief it sounds like if you really like stealth games, you'll like it. If you don't, you really won't. Have a friend of mine that absolutely loves it and she's a huge stealth game fan.

Posted by: damasca at March 02, 2014 03:31 PM (K0Azp)

130 Skyrim is a very big game. I also modify carrying capacity in Skyrim, as well as the *moderately* richer merchants. I don't make it infinite or anything, but I find it too frustrating to have to spend too much time managing inventory, though when I carry isn't realistic.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at March 02, 2014 03:31 PM (qyfb5)

131 Actually I got a friend hooked on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, as MMOs go it's not too bad. Still grindy / crowded, but less so. It still tries to push you into teams but there's a lot of solo material. The crafting is limited in frustrating ways and not balanced (i.e. most equipment crafting will spend all your money and makes usueless stuff compared to drops, biotech crafting makes you a ton of money and is useful almost right away). Also each character is basically limited to one crafting specialty.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at March 02, 2014 03:34 PM (qyfb5)

132 I love stealth games, the much-maligned-by-fanboys Thief 3 was completely my happy place. I also liked Deus Ex 2 better than 1, which just proves I'm the Fanboy Antichrist, I guess. My understanding is people who hated that game made the new one. It looks a lot more like Assassin's Creed, which I could not stand.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at March 02, 2014 03:36 PM (qyfb5)

133 By "modify" do you mean you do something in-game, that's totally allowable, to allow yourself to carry more stuff? Or does it disqualify you from anything?

Posted by: Lincolntf at March 02, 2014 03:42 PM (ZshNr)

134 124 Okay, Thanks, I see that it's not multiplayer, that's cool. I once again assumed incorrectly and thought that pretty much all of the newish games had that capability. I've never played m-p, so I probably wouldn't have anyway. Posted by: Lincolntf at March 02, 2014 07:03 PM (ZshNr) A lot do which sucks. Because one the games they are doing it to aren't really mp designed. And then that it's little more than a way for them to get more money from you by allowing you to buy stuff for multiplayer, either weapons characters upgrades or maps. And they also shorten the single player missions when they do this as well.

Posted by: Buzzion at March 02, 2014 03:48 PM (mXfeP)

135 There's nothing to be disqualified from. It's a single-player game. In early versions there was something about using the console that affected Steam achievements, but that was apparently a bug. Achievements don't really do anything, BUT there's a mod that sets up more achievements that actually affect your abilities, interaction with NPCs, etc.

137 I've been starting my playthrough of the new Thief, and so far I'm quite liking it. Playing on Master difficulty with a bunch of the custom difficulty options (especially no Focus powers), it feels very much like the old games to me. If you leave Focus on, I imagine its probably going to feel a good bit like Dishonored which is also an excellent game, but not what I'm looking for out of Thief. I'm on the third chapter and have done several side missions as well (though most of these are quite small), so there's still certainly time to sour on the game, but from what I've seen so far, I'm pleasantly surprised.
