— Ace HBO is apparently so high on Mike Judge's new comedy, Silicon Valley, that they're letting you watch the first episode for free on YouTube.
Instapundit must not have actually watched it, or else he would have noted the fierce attack on modern-day college occurring near the beginning of the show.
The character who delivers this diatribe at a TED talk is called "Peter Gregory," who is obviously based on tech titan Peter Thiel. Thiel, famously, is a strident critic of what college has become, and actually offers people $100,000 if they will quit college to pursue their tangible, possibly-useful dream. (I assume Thiel has to first approve of your dream before you get the money. So, you know, don't just quit college and then show up at his door with your hand out.)
In the show, the Thiel-analogue is noted to have made just exactly this offer himself, and then gives that TED talk rant at about 8:25 in the below link.
There are two things about this that are interesting for conservatives, who have long suspected Judge of having conservative (or libertarian, or at least liberal-skeptical) positions:
1. This Thiel analogue is the more attractive character of the two tech titans depicted. The Thiel analogue is helpful towards the heroes, wheres the Thiel analogue's rival seems to want to cheat the hero out of his invention.
The rival tech titan is a Blazing Douchebag who smugly propounds upon his devotion to "social justice." The Thiel analogue hasn't revealed his politics, but Peter Thiel himself is a conservative-leaning libertarian.
2. Mike Judge permits someone in the audience to talk back to the Thiel analogue, and say that his ideas are "dangerous," but that guy is a rumpled old hippie, and he is humiliated in verbal sparring by the Thiel analogue. He's left only to sputter "Fascist," impotently, as he leaves the auditorium.
This is probably the most mainstream reference to the idea of a growing Bubble in Higher Education and the current wretechedness of the college system (particularly when one factors in costs and benefits).
Worth a watch. Skip to 8:25, as I say, and watch the minute long second exchange.
I watched the show earlier today on YouTube. Overall, it's pretty good. It's plainly a Mike Judge production, with his sense of humor and sensibility obvious in the script.
Oh, being a Mike Judge production, and being on HBO, you should know there is some objectionable material here, all of the adult potty mouth sort. Though the minute I'm recommending is clean.

King of the Hill totally flipped the Liberal Smart/Conservative Dumb script. (And the Dad Dumb/Mom Smart script.)
And Judge did an entire series* aimed at mocking liberals, "The Goode Family."
*Lasted 5 months.

That bloated Stay Puft perfesser of porn who beat up on the small white girl makes 125 grand per year.

Oh. So it's definitely reality-based, then.
I'm waiting to see if they have a bunch of Blazing Douchebag tech executives who blather on endlessly about "global warming", while at the same time maintaining a fleet of luxury private jets for their own use.
Blazing Douchebag tech execs who then fill up those planes of theirs with below-market-rate discount jet fuel at the government owned pumps at Moffett Federal Air Field in the Valley -- not a privilege extended to members of the general public -- after donating lotsa cash to the Obama campaign.
Because that too is reality-based. That's how sleazy things are now.

Without guidance from the Women's studies, Hispanic and African American studies departments, how will we ever make the poor little students know how they are oppressed by the patriarchy?
They might live long and happy lives without realizing their repression by the Euro-centric, heteronormative patriarchy.

Semi-related: they promote Silicon Valley endlessly on my Comcast OnDemand. It's auto-play, whenever you're looking for the unwatched half of Game of Thrones S3 02, you're hearing whatever they're plugging. Also, if you're looking for whatever the current equivalent of Blues Clues is.
The cut they keep showing has nerd boy being mocked for his logo: "It looks like a guy sucking a dick, with a spare dick tucked in his ear".
Now, I'm a libertine. I exposed my kids to more adult stuff way earlier than most dads do. But that's a conscious choice I made, and I made it case by case. It kind of skeeves me that a mom looking for something to watch with her 8 year old is forced to show him dick jokes.

>>>Keep in mind colleges also tried to usurp the role of some of the things that could be handled in trade schools.
For example, education and business. Which had seperate campuses and their own frats, etc. but they were never "college" in the same sense. It changed, especially for business schools around late-60s early 70s with the advent of community colleges which had the cachet of "college" and cost about the same as a trade school. Then those business and trade schools were mocked and became things like Bryant and Stratton is today: Places for dead-enders to learn some marketable skills so as to achieve marginality and learn some manners.

_Griggs v. Duke Power_, one of the most preposterous Supreme Court decisions ever (and of course that's saying something in the era of "emanations and penumbras").
Companies used to hire people without college degrees and then use tools like IQ testing to promote the smart ones.
Because when you're putting people in charge of things like large power plants, as Duke Power did and does, things that catastrophically catch on fire or explode if mishandled by dumb people, having smart people in charge is important. To say nothing of the importance to the public of reliable power supplies. So: filter by IQ.
Oops! Certain ethnicities don't do well on IQ testing. Teh rayciss!
So the use of such testing became illegal. Thank you SCOTUS!
It took under five milliseconds for all of those jobs which had not previously been thought to require a college degree to suddenly, hey presto, require a college degree.

College loan debts are totally ready to be the next Democrat vote buying gift. First, they've dramatically expanded the debts and encouraged people to buy useless degrees in "communications" and "criminal justice", racking up huge debts. Then they kicked banks out of the market, so government totally controls the granting and disposition of the debts. Lastly, they toughened up the terms and made the debts undischargable in bankruptcy (which is fucking amazing, in and of itself).
What's that all add up to? It's obvious: A Congressional move to forgive debts en masse in 5....4....3...2....1

It's a two-fer: we get to claim we wanted to forgive student loan debt, but the evil Democrats who hate students and the middle class refused, and we get to say we wanted to eleiminate only champagne in the bath tub from HHS and make Eric Fucking Holder buy his own private jets rather than use the taxpayers, but Democrats are so wedded to spending big on fraud and waste that they refused.

College is and of itself is not a problem. It is merely the cost of it. There is the direct cost of going and opportunity cost of not working which have to be weighed against the tangible and intangible benefits. In years past the direct cost were low and the opportunity cost were low, but the tangible benefits were high (and for some professions are still high) and the intangible benefits also had some value (e.g., meeting wife, a form of networking).

When did that change?
When "every kid must college" via reduced admission standards and federal loans became a thing. After the non-scholars get admitted , they have to major in something, and they can't make it in the departments that still have some rigour but they've gotta go somewhere.

Indiana still does a bunch of it. Some of it you don't even have to join UAW.

Which explains all of the utterly incompetent Ivy graduates I've come across over the years. Good school! Good grades! What more could you want?
Social promotion messes up societies. Whether it's social promotion of an inner city kid who can't read being given a high school degree anyway, or social promotion of a mediocre guy who got in to Harvard because daddy is a wealthy alumnus.

It pisses me off that a 4.0 from a decent relatively unknown college doesn't get you in the same doors as a 3.0 from what you deem a top 50 school. The reason most get to go to a top 50 school other than a scholarship is because they have some one who is paying the 40k to 100k a year in tuition and board. They are not necessarily a better candidate, they just have more access to money.
Life's not fair but I don't have to like it.

You go to med school or grad school.
Or you go find some job that has absolutely nothing to do with biology but requires a BS or BA in anything.
Or you sell textbooks/med supplies/ drugs. Although I think some of that is starting to require higher level degrees as well. I have a lot of friends who went in that direction.

Yup. Same thing with a BS in physics. You know just enough to do... uh... zero. Off to the masters with ye!

Staff sergeant. Masters degree. No connections. Everyone else hired there was an officer or had hands-on experience with the (classified) widgets. Me? Nope. Just a solid systems engineer. I make things marry up, and I'm exceptional at it. Square peg, round hole? I'll make it work. Pretty badass at it, actually.
Went on to teach at a univ for pennies, just for the joy of it. Dept chair and I had differences, and he didn't pay me enough to keep me.
Now? I'm probably going to end up reading blueprints for construction.
Life is a wild ride, aint it?
