The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"Without an increase in revenues, any increase in spending would, by definition, increase deficits, and hence the national debt,” Patricia M. Anderson, an economics professor at Dartmouth College

Quote II

"Cash is king because nobody can deny you. The houses that require a mortgage, a lot of people are reluctant.” Vincent Orr

Quote III

"This is a maximalist submission. You cannot claim any more," - Robert Huebert, a political science professor at the University of Calgary

Quote IV

I apologize for my part in creating that and participating in that. Part of me feels like I need to go to every single Indian person in this country and personally apologize. And sometimes I do. -Hank Azaria

As a grown man why is he forgiven and not say MLB pitcher Josh Hader.

I find myself on occasion agreeing with BLM and Antifa. Let it burn.

The Democrat-run cities of Minneapolis and Portland are both on fire … again. Over the weekend, in Democrat-run Portland, the left-wing terrorists in Antifa tried to burn down government buildings with people in them … again. In Democrat-run Minneapolis, the left-wing terrorists in Black Lives Matter burned and looted and rioted … again.

The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

$1,400 Stimulus Check Problem: Some People Have to Return Them

Amid the mad rush to fast-track the stimulus money out to cash-starved Americans, there has been a steady stream of reports indicating that some payments may need to be returned to the IRS.

Oh boy I can hardly wait for "Free Healthcare".

Well of course an Islamic theocracy would consider THC in your urine possession.

A US man who legally enjoyed some cannabis in his home of Las Vegas is now facing three years in prison in the United Arab Emirates after being caught with traces of it in his urine, according to his attorney’s website Detained in Dubai.

Peter Clark, 51, flew to Dubai on February 24 on a business trip looking for a recording studio. The retired game designer then went to a hospital following a pancreatitis attack. He was reported to authorities when doctors found hashish traces in his urine, which is considered possession in the UAE.

Clark was arrested on March 3 despite cannabis being legal in Nevada where he consumed it, kept in a "flea-ridden cell”, and has been waiting in his hotel since getting out of jail.

"Lost a ton of weight, no shower, no food, nothing to drink since I got here, no sleep,” he said in a video after getting out. Clark adds that he did not bring drugs to Dubai, nor purchased or consumed them there.

Talk about a love story.

If your husband was killed in the midst of World War II, what would you do? If your name was Mariya Oktyabrskaya, you’d sell everything you own to buy a T-34 tank and go into battle to avenge him. And you’d be the first women to be made an official Hero of the Soviet Union.

One of ten children, Oktyabrskaya was born into a poor Ukrainian family in the Crimean Peninsula. She didn’t have an interest in the military until, at age 20, she married a Soviet army officer named Ilya Oktyabrskiy in 1925. At that point, she became as active as she possibly could in military matters, joining something called the Military Wives Council, training as an army nurse, learning how to use weapons, and driving vehicles. It was a way to keep herself occupied and grounded as she and her husband traveled from place to place in the

Ukraine.

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — A New York couple has been arrested after police found a 4-year-old boy unattended in a car outside an adult store in North Stonington Saturday night.

Connecticut State Police were called to the parking lot of Amazing Intimate Essentials Adult Store on Norwich Westerly Road at about 8 p.m. for reports of a 4-year-old left alone in a car.

Upon arrival, Troopers found the boy as reported with no parents or guardians in sight.

Troopers went into the store and found the boy’s mother – a 25-year-old New York woman – along with her partner – a 28-year-old New York woman. Police learned the women had been inside the store for about 15 minutes.

Renee Perry of Framingham said Bay, a basenji mix, went missing from her home in June 2016, when she was only 1 1/2 years old and was being watched by a sitter.

Perry said she thought about Bay often.

"I did like to think about what it would like if I were to get her back," Perry told WBZ-TV in Boston.

Perry said she received an unexpected call on Tuesday that her dog had been found in Needham, about 10 miles from where she went missing.

A couple found the dog wandering outside their home and reached out to Missing Dogs Massachusetts, a nonprofit organization that works to reunite missing dogs with their families.

I was walking in Seattle when a lovely young adult woman's dress blew up no more than ten feet away, directly in my line of sight. She pushed her dress back down and I saw her eyes lock on mine. I did my best to keep my face neutral and we walked by each other without comment. She was gorgeous.

95 MisHum, great ONT as usual.

On that Soviet female tanker story, a similar one (without the personal financial part) was that of Alexandra Samusenko, only female tanker in the First Guards Tank Army.

The interesting twist here is that she was an officer, I think a battalion commander, and was the one who an escaped American POW, Joseph Byerle, had to convince to allow him to join the unit.  He had escaped from a camp in Poland, met up with the advancing Red Army, and served with them for a month, lending his demolition expertise (he was a paratrooper).  He was wounded and authorized to return to the US by no less than Marshal Zhukov himself, who encountered him in a field hospital.

Pretty sure that is part of the topic of the Bill of Rights.

130 Lovely ONT Mis Hum, thanks for all the hard work.  In something of a confusing mess the Seattle real estate market is still completely bonkers.  Rents seem to be sort of dropping, but that's because lots of new buildings coming on line. m Landlords are being screwed by the city and the state with eviction moratoriums and now, the state legislature is going to use state money to provide a lawyer to anyone who is being evicted for, "No good reason". The allowable reasons are selling the property or the owner is going to occupy it.  Non payment of rent is way down the list.  Home prices continue to skyrocket with bidding wars on almost everything. It's nuts and I'm pretty sure it won't end well.

True, of course. But stated by an academic, "increase in revenues" always means a higher tax rate. But Reagan proved the government can increase revenues by lowering the tax rate. The lower tax rate stimulates the economy, so that when applied to an increased tax base, revenues rise.

Shit, next I bet you'll tell me the national Party encourages illegal immigration, further driving down wages for those selfsame people, and increasing the barrier to legitimate home ownership.
Or, defunds their police departments and decriminalizes quality-of-life crimes and builds schools-cum-prisons in their neighborhoods.
Or, puts an abortion clinic on every fifth block in their neighborhoods.
None of that stuff would make sense. Unless they didn't *really* care about black people, except as assets, to be generated and spent according to need. I'm not sure what you'd call that.

180 There's already talk of mostly peaceful protests in Seattle tonight. I'd worry about Nurse but I think she'll be okay where she is. My area is pretty safe overall but the real estate is also sort of nuts.  My 91 year old, paid for, house has appreciated by nearly twice what I paid for it. If I ever got insane and sold it, it'd be a tear down.  Having a home and a car paid for and no sebt is a terrific feeling.
BTW Pug, that's a great family you have there.

261 From last thread:
T-34 vs PzKfw IV (ca. Kursk, so 1942 Model T-34/76 vs PzKfw IV Aufs. H)
Turret Crew: T-34 had 2, with commander/gunner and loader. Tank commander often task saturated. Pz IV had a dedicated gunner.
Comms: Not many radios in Soviet tank units. Each German fighting vehicle had radios.
Gun/Ammo: German had better range and penetration
Armor: Pz IV had thicker frontal armor. T-34 had sloped, but thinner (effect was still less than Pz IV)
Turret Basket: Pz IV yes. T-34 no. Commander gunner hand to walk when turret traversed.

263 Are you, by any chance, an Episcopalian in New York City who's fed up with how the church has gone crazy? Feel like an ecclesiastical orphan? Would you love to go to church again as it was in the good old days, when they taught the Bible and used the old Book of Common Prayer?
Trickle into St. Alban's: you will find kindred spirits there, and the pastors are really good guys. Matt Harrington, the rector, is Welsh and was a rugger. Dennis is diffident but kindhearted. They're in the Swedenborgian church on Murray Hill, Park Ave. and 35th St. Tell them Gail sent you. :-)

The police officer who fired the shot that killed a 20-year-old man Sunday in Brooklyn Center is a 26-year veteran of the force, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Monday night.

The BCA said Kimberly A. Potter is on standard administrative leave. Potter, 48, was first licensed as a police officer in Minnesota in 1995 at age 22, according to state records.

Among her duties during her tenure with the Brooklyn Center Police Department has been serving on the force’s negotiation team.

Ye Morons looking to relocate, I once again recommend Oklahoma.

Here in the NE part of the state, other than the arctic blasts (like Texas this past winter) and the sweltering heat waves (with choking humidity), and the occasional drought, or torrential deluge, it's really quite tolerable weather. And, sure, wind; the twisters can be awful, but they're statistically rare — why, I've only dodged three of them. One touching down just two blocks south of me in '74 was exciting!

And politically, you know, every county went Trump twice, and our representatives (especially mine) are not all that RINO-ey. Both our squishy Senators need to be primaried; interested in a job? The big cities and the university areas are swarming with liberals, of course, but aren't they all? At least the cowboys and other owlhoots are solid, salt of the earth. Generally. (If you move here, you may need to learn how to employ phrases like "tump over.")

And you know why you don't hear about Oklahomans dying en masse from lifted mask mandates? Never had 'em in the first place (well, state-wide recommendations, and city mandates, but not state mandates AFAIK). It's a 2A state. Front license plates saying "Eat more Beef" optional.

[Reads what I wrote.] Hm. That seems like a half-hearted endorsement, doesn't it? Really, we could use more Morons. But, doesn't everywhere?

[unpaid endorsement]

297 Here is why you RTFM before you travel to other countries. US State Department information on traveling to UAE:

Drugs: UAE law imposes the death sentence for convicted drug traffickers. Possession of even trace amounts of illegal drugs (including in the bloodstream) can result in lengthy prison sentences of up to 15 years. Bail generally is not granted to those accused of drug crimes.

Possession or consumption of marijuana in any form, including detections of trace amounts in the bloodstream, is illegal in the UAE, even if a doctor’s medical card is presented. Products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are illegal in the UAE. Possession or importation of CBD products, including those found in prescription and over the counter medications in the United States and other countries, are prosecuted in the same manner as marijuana possession. The UAE's anti-narcotics program also includes poppy seeds on its list of controlled substances. The importation and possession of poppy seeds in any and all forms, including as dried decorative plants, are strictly prohibited.

Persons may be charged and convicted even if the controlled substances were ingested outside of the UAE as long as traces are still present in the bloodstream upon arrival in the UAE. If suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, individuals may be required to submit to blood and/or urine tests and may be subject to prosecution.

++++

I would rate this as mostly true. Certainly it is for what she is talking about, sending out "free" money to anyone and everyone.

But, just as a business can increase revenues by opening a new location, government can build infrastructure that allows increased economic activity, resulting in increased tax receipts. Such as building roads or airports and so forth. But, that requires long term planning. Just as building a new store in a new location will require short term increases in spending, so too with infrastructure spending. And, of course, the government will almost certainly screw it up and the "investment" will will almost always end up costing us more both short term and long term.

I think the formal commission finding on regretted past decisions has now concluded that my turning down the offer to house sit the old rich Argentine lady's country/ski home in Bariloche (foothills of the Andes, other side from the photo), decades ago, was a mistake.

They're now reviewing the passed-on opportunities for the interesting and target-rich gig in Bulgaria a decade later, and the ridiculously posh thing in Cyprus a few years after that.  Oh well.

P-51B-10-NA Serial # 43-7153 was assigned to the 468th FS/352FG VIII Fighter Command. Was lost on 10 June 1944. Pilot evaded only to be later captured with the Marquis and executed.

I told them. But kept on depositing cash and nothing came of it. Still do. I could see if I was bringing in boxes of cash, but I can't see the feds starting a big investigation over what amounts to petty cash on their radar. I don't think they even know about it until it hits 10,000. But banks are instructed to do what is called by the feds as "Get to know your customer". A quaint way of saying, spy for us.

430 In looking through my "Life Application" Bible I came across a section on the psalms which said Psalm 11 is one of the psalms to read when you need stability:
Here is a link for Psalm 11:
https://tinyurl.com/w4wr5p44
Theme: God's rule provides stability in the midst of panic. Because we can trust him, we can face our problems.
Here are some explanatory notes for it:
11:1-4 David's fear  contrasted dramatically with the fear of his advisors. Faith in God helps us from losing hope and helps us resist fear.
David's advisors were afraid because they saw only frightening circumstances and crumbling foundations. David was strengthened and comforted  because he knew God was greater than anything his enemies could bring against him
11:4 When  law and order collapse  and you wish you could hide remember that God is still in control. When you feel like running away, run to God.
11:5 God does not preserve believers from difficult circumstances. For some, God's tests become a refining fire while for others they become an incinerator for destruction. Use tests as an opportunity to grow.
