UTA Flight 772: The Most Beautiful And Least Accessible Memorial On The Planet

UTA Flight 772 was a scheduled flight operating from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo to Paris CDG airport in France.

On Tuesday, September 19th, 1989 the aircraft exploded over Niger in the Tenere region of the Sahara Desert. French investigators determined a suitcase bomb planted by Libyan terrorists to be the cause. All 170 people on board died.

And 18 years later in 2007 families of the victims gathered at the remote desert crash site in Niger and built a memorial by hand.

Slate: In Atlanta Even the Snow is Racist

Because the city's voters rejected a light rail system, like to live in the suburbs, and vote Republican. Therefore racist snowpocalypse. QED

Oh and apparently there are Snow Truthers out there who believe the snowpocalypse was caused by fake snow. Made by the government of course.

The DOJ May Not Be Interested in Profiling Muslims

President Obama's Department of Justice wants to "expand its definition of racial profiling" so that federal agents will no longer be able to consider religion, national origin, or gender/sexual orientation in their investigations...

ACLU national security attorney Hina Shamsi praised the proposed changes, saying: "Putting an end to [these profiling techniques] not only comports with the Constitution, it would put real teeth to the F.B.I.'s claims that it wants better relationships with minorities."

But Muslim terrorists are most definitely interested in us.

Ten WWI Myths

5. 'Lions led by donkeys'

This saying was supposed to have come from senior German commanders describing brave British soldiers led by incompetent old toffs from their chateaux. In fact the incident was made up by historian Alan Clark.

During the war more than 200 generals were killed, wounded or captured. Most visited the front lines every day. In battle they were considerably closer to the action than generals are today.
7. Tactics on the Western Front remained unchanged despite repeated failure

Never have tactics and technology changed so radically in four years of fighting. It was a time of extraordinary innovation. In 1914 generals on horseback galloped across battlefields as men in cloth caps charged the enemy without the necessary covering fire. Both sides were overwhelmingly armed with rifles. Four years later, steel-helmeted combat teams dashed forward protected by a curtain of artillery shells.

They were now armed with flame throwers, portable machine-guns and grenades fired from rifles. Above, planes, that in 1914 would have appeared unimaginably sophisticated, duelled in the skies, some carrying experimental wireless radio sets, reporting real-time reconnaissance.

Huge artillery pieces fired with pinpoint accuracy - using only aerial photos and maths they could score a hit on the first shot. Tanks had gone from the drawing board to the battlefield in just two years, also changing war forever.

Meanwhile the meaning of WWI is still being debated in the UK and many blame misconceptions on the war on how it has been portrayed in pop culture such as Blackadder Goes Forth. Still I think the ending of the series is brilliant.

Sacco and Vanzetti, the Leftist Media, and the Original Truthiness

The trial may have been a mess but there was never really any question that the pair were guilty. But that didn't stop many progressive journalists of the time from knowingly lying about the case. Because truthiness. And fear.

Upton Sinclair wrote a book about how the men were innocent and railroaded, but later letters were found indicating that he feared for his life and decided "It is much better copy as a naive defense of Sacco and Vanzetti because this is what all my foreign readers expect, and they are 90% of my public."  Sinclair's biographer Pasco later said in an interview with NPR:
I think he cut some corners on this. He thought that a larger truth was that there was repression in America and that that was his subject and that innocent people sometimes were found guilty. I think that he showed a similar kind of ethical lapse later on when he was very hesitant in the late 1930s and early 1940s to condemn Stalin.
Even if the men were guilty, he felt that the larger context of the world in which they were living rendered their guilt perhaps less important than it might have been otherwise.
As the son of one of the group of Boston revolutionaries told Pasco, "They all lied. They did it for the cause."  The cause was more important than the crimes or the lives taken, more important than the robbery of working class people's payroll.  More important than the truth.

30 As a resident of Atlanta, someone please tell that Slate twat to kiss my recently thawed ass. One reason people don't want money poured into a light rail system is because no one trusts the thumblessly inept city officials to to build it without an endless parade of graft and fuck ups. And people have escaped the downtown area for the northern suburbs for much the same reason they do any other city like Detroit or LA; they do not want their shit stolen all the time or have to step over passed out bums on the way to work every day. It's not racist to not to want to deal with crime and squalor all the goddam time. I wonder where this Slate asshole lives; if it's in NYC, I'll bet it's not in the South Bronx.

37 My son and I tried watching that show on syfy called opposite worlds. I am not a fan of a lot of reality shows, but I have to say this one horrified me. We had to turn it off halfway through the first episode when two of the contestants were injured, one hauled off in an ambulance. Now it may be fake, but even assuming that the whole viciousness of the contestants and the fact that people at home could vote on rewards and punishments just made me sad for the state of our country.

It's just suppressive fire to cover the retreat of the ATL mayor -- a liberal Democrat who famously and overoptimistically tweeted that Atlanta was "Ready for the snow!" when in reality they were nowhere near ready. Chaotic disorganization.

But, Katrina demonstrated that with a complaisant media and a determined strategy to fix blame elsewhere in the public mind, inept Democratic municipal authorities can skate out from under blame for failed storm response.

So, expect to see this in the left's standard playbook from now on.

Plus viewers vote on individual rewards and punishments. The first episode the caveman people were freezing, like blue and shivering and couldn't get a fire started while the future world people were drinking and eating sushi and watching them. It was icky. Then their competition for the episode was a platform where they fought to push each other off and they were armed with tasters to tase each other.

Repeat of all of the above for Cincinati - you saved me a bunch of typing.

I'm reading a book about 1927 now, and it has a a chapter on Sacco and Vanzetti, the Mumias of the 1920's. If you think the anti-Americanism of the international left dates from the post-WWI period, well, no, there were riots over the executions all over the world, and many of them, like the ones in Germany(you know, the folks who would vote for Hitler a few years down the line), London, and Geneva. In Havana, the US Embassy was bombed. The French, who had welcomed Lindbergh joyously just a few months earlier, ran around town looking for Americans to beat up. If they couldn't find any, they ganged up on wealthy natives who were just sitting at bistros minding their own business. The mob also vandalized the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Because it happened in the days before TV, few Americans at home gave much of a damn about the executiions - the case had dragged on forever and everyone here was sick of it - and it really didn't sink in that outside America, for a few days, no American was safe.

And why did every lefty in the entire f'ing world go apeshit crazy over this? Because our own artists and writers, like Sinclair, made it sound like those two were a pair of saints, unjustly persecuted by evil American capitalists. That was the very first case in which our native American-hating intellectuals made martyrs out of scum. And they haven't learned a goddamn thing during the past century.

I'm not really loving my contributions to the ONT lately, so I think I'll start including non-medical anecdotes about my dad. He coined the word 'dork' as a term of derision for people. Apparently, it's also what whalers call whale penises, but that's just a coincidence. He was with a friend somewhere in South Dakota, some time in the 50's, when they saw a building called 'Dorcas Hall'. I think it was a place where they made clothes for poor people, named after that lady Paul mentioned in that epistle. His friend goes "Hey, Munger, what do you think that place is?", my dad says "Probably where all the dorks go". The other guy thought it was really funny and told a lot of people.

OK, so a book or something like "Cool things you can do with WordPress beyond the obvious"? 'Cause there's a series of topic-related how-to books that are in the computer magazine section of the local Barnes & Noble that I've found to be really good for that sort of brainstorming. The one for Photoshop is really cool, because it shows the raw parts (with links), and talks step-by-step through assembling them into the really cool pic that heads up the section. So if you see a picture of something that is the right sort of thing that you'd like to do, you just start with different ingredients and follow the process. They're like $15-$25. I like 'em better than classical instructional materials because they start out with the beginning and the end.

Yeah, how tos were in the back of my head. But I figured youse guys would either have favorites to recommend or have other good suggestions (classes, videos)

Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy at February 04, 2014 12:19 AM (V9+wG)

In Silicon Valley, you see bunches of well-thumbed white books from these guys -- http://oreilly.com/ -- and I can attest that things like their "The Access Cookbook" are totally golden.....because often the problem is that there are 10,000 things you can get the software to do, but you have to know to ask for it. They have several WordPress titles.

I don't think a class or video is really the way you need to go, because you'd spend at least the first large part just getting to the point where your friend already got to. Knowing cool things that stretch the potential is more the game -- she's already got the car....you'd be puttin' on the cool rims, pinstripes, lowerin' it, and covering the dashboard in fur.

370 Barack Obama discovers a leak under his sink, so he calls Joe the Plumber to come and fix it. Joe drives to Obama's house, which is located in a very nice neighborhood, where it's clear that all the residents make more than $250,000 per year.

Joe arrives and takes his tools into the house. Joe is led to the room that contains the leaky pipe under a sink. Joe assesses the problem and tells Obama, who is standing near the door, that it's an easy repair that will take less than 10 minutes.

Obama asks Joe how much it will cost. Joe immediately says, "$9,500."

"$9,500?" Obama asks, stunned, "But you said it's an easy repair!"

"Yes, but what I do is charge a lot more to my clients who make more than $250,000 per year so I can fix the plumbing of everybody who makes less than that for free," explains Joe. "It's always been my philosophy. As a matter of fact, I lobbied government to pass this philosophy as law, and it did pass earlier this year, so now all plumbers have to do business this way. It's known as 'Joe's Affordable Plumbing Act of 2013.' Surprised you haven't heard of it."

In spite of that, Obama tells Joe there's no way he's paying that much for a small plumbing repair, so Joe leaves. Obama spends the next hour flipping through the phone book looking for another plumber, but he finds that all other plumbing businesses listed have gone out of business. Not wanting to pay Joe's price, Obama does nothing. The leak under Obama's sink goes unrepaired for the next several days.

A week later the leak is so bad that Obama has had to put a bucket under the sink. The bucket fills up quickly and has to be emptied every hour, and there's a risk that the room will flood, so Obama calls Joe and pleads with him to return.

Joe goes back to Obama's house, looks at the leaky pipe, and says, “Let's see - this will cost you about $21,000."

"A few days ago you told me it would cost $9,500!" Obama quickly fires back.

Joe explains the reason for the dramatic increase. "Well, because of 'Joe's Affordable Plumbing Act,' a lot of rich people are learning how to fix their own plumbing, so there are fewer of you paying for all the free plumbing I'm doing for the people who make less than $250,000. As a result, the rate I have to charge my wealthy paying customers rises every day.

"Not only that, but for some reason the demand for plumbing work from the group of people who get it free has skyrocketed, and there's a long waiting list of those who need repairs. This has put a lot of my fellow plumbers out of business, and they're not being replaced - nobody is going into the plumbing business because they know they won't make any money. I'm hurting now too - all thanks to greedy rich people like you who won't pay their fair share."

Obama tries to straighten out the plumber: "Of course you're hurting, Joe! Don't you get it? If all the rich people learn how to fix their own plumbing and you refuse to charge the poorer people for your services, you'll be broke, and then what will you do?"

Joe immediately replies, "Run for president.”

Video tape didn't exist yet when the show started. The reason they filmed it instead of live broadcast (with a film camera pointed at a studio monitor to create a kinescope archive) is that Lucy and Desi wanted to stay in Los Angeles at a time when nearly all major TV series were made in New York. They also went to the expense of having three cameras instead of one, which allowed for more complex editing.

As a result, they had a show that looked far better and more comparable to a movie production than most of series TV at the time. Thus the episodes lent themselves much better to repeat broadcast than shows whose only archival copy was kinescopes.

Having one while your competitors have a two-year-old textbook is what keeps Silicon Valley ahead of the curve.

And as someone already noted, they are routinely portrayed as saints when they were anything but. They were stone cold killers. Besides the fapping books, there is a recent documentary about them that is sickening. Lots of leftards bursting in tears over them. And that idiot Dukakis declared them innocent.

Maet, that is totally awesome. Can you query it for an entire year? If it's 2555 unique hashes for a week and 2652 hashes for a year, that seriously tells us something -- and if it's 2555 unique hashes for a week and 56,925 for the year, that tells us something else.

however, I do want to respond to your assertion that this blog has any influence over anything.   the last several elections tell me different.  no one in power gives a shit.

most people around here support concepts like freedom, a government that pays the bills without enslaving the grandkids and stuff like that.  I don't see any evidence that it is having any effect on those in power.

I won't speak for anyone else, but I have damn sure kidded myself in a manner along the lines of your assertions.  By now, I know I was fulla shit.

just voices in the wind.   wanna have influence? -- don't read or write on a blog -- take 'em cash.

597 At the end of WW I, most people in Britain and America seemed to think that we had won the war.

I believe that one of the factors that led to people believing that it was all pointless was the autobiography of David Lloyd George, the Prime Minister who presided over the crumbling of the Liberal Party, in an attempt to restart his political career.

We tend to look at WW II as a good war that ended well while WW I was a pointless waste of lives.  Interestingly, people in eastern Europe tend to look at it as the exact reverse.  After WW I they got their independence but WW II was filled with mass slaughters of soldiers and civilians and ended up with them spending half a century under the thumb of the Russians with brain dead socialism keeping them all poor.

601 I highly recommend this 10 part series: The First World War (2003) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0426688/ It's beautifully filmed and has unique film footage and actually talks about the causes of the war and the outcome instead of some nonstop p.c. lecture that war is baaaadddd. Yes, we know it is bad.

What the fuck Satya Nadella  is the CEO now?  It's official and if one of you fucks is awake u get an exclusive:

Today is a very humbling day for me. It reminds me of my very first day at Microsoft, 22 years ago. Like you, I had a choice about where to come to work. I came here because I believed Microsoft was the best company in the world. I saw then how clearly we empower people to do magical things with our creations and ultimately make the world a better place. I knew there was no better company to join if I wanted to make a difference. This is the very same inspiration that continues to drive me today.

It is an incredible honor for me to lead and serve this great company of ours. Steve and Bill have taken it from an idea to one of the greatest and most universally admired companies in the world. IÂ’ve been fortunate to work closely with both Bill and Steve in my different roles at Microsoft, and as I step in as CEO, IÂ’ve asked Bill to devote additional time to the company, focused on technology and products. IÂ’m also looking forward to working with John Thompson as our new Chairman of the Board.

While we have seen great success, we are hungry to do more. Our industry does not respect tradition — it only respects innovation. This is a critical time for the industry and for Microsoft. Make no mistake, we are headed for greater places — as technology evolves and we evolve with and ahead of it. Our job is to ensure that Microsoft thrives in a mobile and cloud-first world.

As we start a new phase of our journey together, I wanted to share some background on myself and what inspires and motivates me.

Who am I?

I am 46. IÂ’ve been married for 22 years and we have 3 kids. And like anyone else, a lot of what I do and how I think has been shaped by my family and my overall life experiences. Many who know me say I am also defined by my curiosity and thirst for learning. I buy more books than I can finish. I sign up for more online courses than I can complete. I fundamentally believe that if you are not learning new things, you stop doing great and useful things. So family, curiosity and hunger for knowledge all define me.

Why am I here?

I am here for the same reason I think most people join Microsoft — to change the world through technology that empowers people to do amazing things. I know it can sound hyperbolic — and yet it’s true. We have done it, we’re doing it today, and we are the team that will do it again.

I believe over the next decade computing will become even more ubiquitous and intelligence will become ambient. The coevolution of software and new hardware form factors will intermediate and digitize — many of the things we do and experience in business, life and our world. This will be made possible by an ever-growing network of connected devices, incredible computing capacity from the cloud, insights from big data, and intelligence from machine learning.

This is a software-powered world.

It will better connect us to our friends and families and help us see, express, and share our world in ways never before possible. It will enable businesses to engage customers in more meaningful ways.

I am here because we have unparalleled capability to make an impact.

Why are we here?

In our early history, our mission was about the PC on every desk and home, a goal we have mostly achieved in the developed world. Today weÂ’re focused on a broader range of devices. While the deal is not yet complete, we will welcome to our family Nokia devices and services and the new mobile capabilities they bring us.

As we look forward, we must zero in on what Microsoft can uniquely contribute to the world. The opportunity ahead will require us to reimagine a lot of what we have done in the past for a mobile and cloud-first world, and do new things.

We are the only ones who can harness the power of software and deliver it through devices and services that truly empower every individual and every organization. We are the only company with history and continued focus in building platforms and ecosystems that create broad opportunity.

Qi Lu captured it well in a recent meeting when he said that Microsoft uniquely empowers people to "do more." This doesn’t mean that we need to do more things, but that the work we do empowers the world to do more of what they care about — get stuff done, have fun, communicate and accomplish great things. This is the core of who we are, and driving this core value in all that we do — be it the cloud or device experiences — is why we are here.

What do we do next?

To paraphrase a quote from Oscar Wilde — we need to believe in the impossible and remove the improbable.

This starts with clarity of purpose and sense of mission that will lead us to imagine the impossible and deliver it. We need to prioritize innovation that is centered on our core value of empowering users and organizations to “do more.” We have picked a set of high-value activities as part of our One Microsoft strategy. And with every service and device launch going forward we need to bring more innovation to bear around these scenarios.

Next, every one of us needs to do our best work, lead and help drive cultural change. We sometimes underestimate what we each can do to make things happen and overestimate what others need to do to move us forward. We must change this.

Finally, I truly believe that each of us must find meaning in our work. The best work happens when you know that it's not just work, but something that will improve other people's lives. This is the opportunity that drives each of us at this company.

Many companies aspire to change the world. But very few have all the elements required: talent, resources, and perseverance. Microsoft has proven that it has all three in abundance. And as the new CEO, I canÂ’t ask for a better foundation.

LetÂ’s build on this foundation together.

Satya

Subject: Satya Nadella - MicrosoftÂ’s New CEO

Today is an incredibly exciting day as we announce Satya Nadella as the new CEO of Microsoft. Satya will be a great CEO, and I am pumped for the future of Microsoft. You can read the full announcement here.

Satya is a proven leader. HeÂ’s got strong technical skills and great business insights. He has a remarkable ability to see what's going on in the market, to sense opportunity, and to really understand how we come together at Microsoft to execute against those opportunities in a collaborative way. I have worked closely with Satya for many years and I have seen these skills many times. He is not alone, though. Our Senior Leadership Team has never been stronger, and together this group will drive us forward.

Microsoft is one of the great companies in the world. I love this company. I love the bigness and boldness of what we do. I love the way we partner with other companies to come together to change the world. I love the breadth and the diversity of all of the customers we empower, from students in the classroom to individual consumers to small businesses to governments to the largest enterprises.

Above all, I love the spirit of this place, the passion, and the perseverance, which has been the cornerstone of our culture from the very beginning.

Stay focused and keep moving forward. I am excited about what we will do. SatyaÂ’s appointment confirms that.

Thanks for making Microsoft the most amazing place to work on the planet, and thanks for the chance to lead.

Steve
