Dr Ray Stantz: You know, it just occurred to me that we really haven't had a successful test of this equipment.
Dr. Egon Spengler: I blame myself.
Dr. Peter Venkman: So do I.
Dr Ray Stantz: Well, no sense in worrying about it now.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why worry? Each one of us is carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back.
Does anybody actually live and have breakfast like this?
I imagine this is exactly how the Известия Sunday Supplement would have covered up-and-coming members of the nomenklatura. Well assuming they could obtain fresh eggs, realistic-looking pineapples and fruit, matching pajamas, use of a show dacha, as well as afford the necessary color offset printing and photo retouching.
But amid the decadent breakfast Carney and Shipman demonstrate that from their artwork to their clothing that they still haven't forgotten their proletarian and revolutionary roots:
Jay Suit, $895, glen plaid dress shirt, $195, foulard print tie, $135, and polka-dot pocket square, $55, all at Hugo Boss (Tysons Galleria). Claire Cotton jacquard shift dress, $299 at Karen Millen (Tysons Galleria); knotted rope crystal necklace, $98 at Ann Taylor (multiple area locations); and jeweled bracelet by Loren Hope, similar styles at Bishop Boutique (Alexandria).
But if you read the article, amongst the fawning it actually ends up undercutting the Administration and Democrat's claims of widespread pay discrimination against women.
And yet Carney's own experience illustrates how silly the Democrats' claims are. Shipman has worked part-time for the last five years to spend more time with her young children. Carney, meanwhile, leaves for the White House at 7:25 a.m. and tries to get home by 8:00 in the evening. As in most families, it is his wife who takes time out from her career to focus on children, and who devotes more time to her family: "Flexibility, she says, is what most working mothers really want."
Exactly. That is the same choice that most families make-not all, but most. It largely explains why, on the average, men earn more than women. Carney no doubt understands this perfectly well, but this is one of many instances where he has to pretend that the Democrats' politically-inspired claims make sense, even though they are contrary to his own (and everyone else's) experience.
Because party truth trumps reality.
A Lot of Democrats Think Their Taxes Are Too Low
Yet they never opt to voluntarily pay more when given the chance. Because they want you to suffer as well. This is a classic area where Democrats are out of step with the rest of America.

It totally is! (thought I would lose my position due to excessive scrolling) However, here is my annoying little question. If we can be downloading data from satellites that are out past Jupiter, if you can walk into any random Starbucks and wirelessly grab the entire interwebs, why does a black box have to be in physical possession, why can't they make them so the data can just be pulled remotely? This makes NO sense to me.

He began with this: "As soon as the photograph of Soviet propaganda posters in Jay CarneyÂ’s kitchen hit the Internet, right-wing pundits began to draw conclusions about White House Press SecretaryÂ’s ideology, morals, and political leanings. It was as if things that a man merely places on his walls and looks at day after day can be any indication of his life choices.
If that were so, the meals in CarneyÂ’s kitchen would also probably match the menu of the place and time of the posters. His family would be living on a diet of beets, gruel, occasional rat, and thinly sliced boiled jackboots, which is what many Soviets ate at the time these posters were produced."

My best guess: if the black box can emit a 37.5 kHz audio ping, it could be designed to receive pings on a different channel, pings that would give it orders to download its memory in a long string of short and long pings, like Morse Code, only representing zeroes and ones, for binary data. Probably the box would need to be provided with a larger battery for this to work. Likely the biggest stumbling block would be getting to the necessary approval from all the regulatory agencies with fingers in the pie.

I chatted with a Porsche shop owner, a guy who actually _learned German_ via the Goethe-Institut, so that he could do a better job working on German cars. I think, maybe, vascular surgeons charge more per hour.
Of course, the care and feeding of Porsche-owner clients is complicated and fussy. One shop client came in with his Porsche, and a van with his own personal tools, to be used by the shop staff. Because only one set of tools was to ever be allowed to touch his car. No hoi-polloi common tools used on just any car would do. (This ended when some dirtbag stole the van.)
He said that he made the 930 Turbo owners pay in cash up front because of their habit of getting themselves killed in the car. I am still not sure to this day that he was joking.

For years, I argued with lefty enviroweenies about nuclear power.
They kept bleating, "What do you do with the waste?"
I said, "Well, first off, that stuff isn't really waste per se. There's usable energy left in there. Plenty of it. But current generation reactors aren't set up for that. We could build advanced reactors and hugely reduce said 'waste' issue. Fission that stuff."
They said, "To zero? No? Where do you put the irreducible minimum?"
I said, "Well, shit, just about any decommissioned hard-rock mountain mine would do nicely. But if you want to make sure it's never seen again before finally decaying to lead, cast it in glass bricks and use ROVs to stack it on the bottom of the bottom of the bottom of the ocean."
Because there are places that go a lot deeper even than that very deep graphic.
Way down there, there aren't much in the way of currents to move things around. There are a bunch of dead nuclear sub reactor cores in much shallower water which show that the materials don't migrate far.
And there's not much life apart from the odd extremophile colonies around volcanic vents. Life requires a certain minimal amount of metabolizable energy, and it's very dark and very cold down there. Really the only thing going other than the vents is the very faint spark of digestible organic material slowly raining down from dead sea life in shallower waters.

Oh, I don't know. I kind of like the idea that it's still possible for people to move around the planet without being minutely surveilled.
And constant surveillance is not free. The engines on that plane could have sent data back to the manufacturer, but the operator didn't think it added enough value to make the cost worthwhile.

Everything is a trade-off. So you probably could have continual flight data upload and 180-day pinger batteries - just so long as you don't mind paying an extra $150+ per flight.

That thing sat around the SF Bay for decades. While, as rumor has it, the contaminated internal "moon pool" cooled off. I always used to laugh about how the local liberal loons would totally shit themselves in fear if only they bothered to crack a book and learn what the hell that ship had done.
For a while it was parked near the salt flats in the south Bay. Then they moved it north to Suisun Bay and the "mothball fleet" up there.
It's apparently now been renovated and overhauled and is back in service with the offshore oil industry. I wonder how many of the roughnecks have any idea about its storied history.

NDH, when the plane gets in trouble scenario. Pam Am Flt 103 and TWA 800 would not have been helped by it because both were sudden and complete destruction of airframes.
So the only way to make sure such a system would help pinpoint the cause is a real time transmit of all data as it happens. Which requires bandwidth, lots of it since a modern digital FDR can record around 300 different flight parameters.

Maybe that doesn't seem like a lot of money for you when it's an evil corporation, but a bunch of someones who know more about business than I do calculated that the increased cost per flight and did a bunch of projections with ticket price and cash flow and decided that since they've been fine without that service for decades, it wasn't worth losing money/market share to get it.

The BH goofed up the one in the front on the driver's side, and I cut away the part that was rubbing on the tire.....but if I'm going to replace it, I'll need to take all the screws out -- and they just spin. Worse yet, I can't see the other side of 'em 'cause they're buried in sheetmetal innards (this is a '94 Honda Civic, BTW).

Story I heard about a year ago concerning a Bolivian riverine boat accidentally wandering into Chilean territory and encountering a Chilean patrol. At first, the two sides were about to start blasting away at each other, until the respective commanders recognized one another...they had been classmates at Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC)...what used to be known as "School of the Americas" at Fort Benning. What was nearly a bloodbath became a little reunion and the Chileans helpfully guided the lost Bolivians back to their own turf.

Fender liners are often held in by "Christmas tree" fasteners, like a rivet with a stack of plastic barbs on it. Mostly you break them taking them out. But you can buy new ones cheap at your local auto parts store.
There are also plastic expansion rivets that are expanded into place by either a pin, pressed in, or a small Phillips-head screw. If you see screw heads, that might be what you have. If the rivet doesn't fit tightly, the whole thing may turn. A hammer and sharp chisel fixes them. Again, cheap, cheap. Plastic fasteners are actually better in this application, because they don't corrode. You want to pay some dealership mechanic $75 per hour to drill out rusted screws, when he can have the fender liner out and in again in five minutes by cutting the old plastic fasteners and popping in new ones for a quarter each?

But since I already had kids it didn't stand out like my mind like my GTO Judge or Buick GS even though it should have in anything but a straight drag.

Honda uses plastic push fasteners that look exactly like phillips head screws.
Just get under the fender liner and pop it a little. Then you can take a pair of diagonal pliers and finish the removal by either cutting or levering it the rest of the way.
I'd lever it, they frequently can be reused with no problem.

Actually, the reason the transponder is accessible inside the cockpit is because of hijackings. There is an international code that the pilots can change the "squawk" of the transponder to to indicate a hijacking. That way, even if they are unable to vocally transmit the situation to air traffic control, ATC will see the transponder code and know what's going on.

Holy cow. Walking in the footprints of history, and all that.
I understand that after the fall of the USSR, the CIA and the Navy sent a delegation to what had just become once again the admiralty of the Russian fleet. With videotape of what had been done with the mortal remains of the sailors from the sub.
They had been given a very formal, disciplined and respectful Russian Orthodox burial at sea. With the whole ship's company turned out in their best.
This apparently made a tremendous impression about good American intentions even upon the more hardened and doctrinaire Communist types. At what was a fairly tense time from their perspective.

Must have been an interesting job bringing everything up to date.
Also in re interesting jobs: I talked for a while with a guy whose profession is squiring people through the long rigamarole of getting security clearances.
(Which has become a HUGE industry now in the post-Sept-11 environment. There are entire job-search Web sites devoted only to jobs requiring clearances.)
He got into that line of work back in the day, before things got really crazy.
One of the things he mused about (not having handled it himself) was that assembling a crew, with top clearances, for the original _Glomar Explorer_ mission, must have been a cast iron bitch.
The offshore sector from which they were seeking experienced hands has more than its share of VERY colorful characters. Colorful in the sorts of ways that would make a straightlaced clearance examiner blush and mark them as wholly unsuitable. I heard the story of one rig roughneck who had eleven ex-wives.
I can only assume they must have issued a bunch of waivers. Or they looked for a long long time to find the people they needed.

There's what ought to be a fairly obvious question there about just what is meant by an "enumeration", and just how broadly the Congressional prerogative to direct that "by law" can be drawn.
I tend to view any such enumeration as a pretty strictly defined headcount of citizens, intended to determine federal representation, and not more than that.
Of course, in the age of "emanations and penumbras", and the infinitely elastic Commerce Clause, and the fabled "Good and Welfare" clause which Rep. Conyers likes to cite, sheesh, we should be glad it's just nosey questions.

A little aviation sanity, I'll hope?
In most modern airliner cockpits, the layouts will be more similar than not.
The transponder "head unit" will be centrally located, either on the lower-center panel in front of the pilots, or in the center console, near the autopilot controls.
In that location, the crew can dial in various transponder codes, including those for hijack or other forms of distress. At this "head unit" location, the transponder does not feature a boldly marked "off" switch.
However, in that each and every electrical system on the aircraft must be able to be shut off and isolated in the case of electrical fault or fire, every said system has an electrical circuit breaker, and that panel is most often on the forward facing bulkhead, directly behind the pilot's seat.
Most often, it will be the 1st Officer's job (co-pilot), to "pull" a given breaker, as needs arise.
If there were any fire of an undeterminate nature aboard the aircraft, the breakers would be all be pulled, save for those absolutely necessary for the continued operation of the plane. This would include the breaker which powers the transponder.
In any airborne emergency, the priorities are to 1. Aviate. 2. Navigate. 3. Communicate.
And if a smoky fire occurred on board, the pilots would have their hands full with #s 1 and #2. Might not have had time for #3, before their smoke-hoods ran out of time.
Oxygen masks, you ask? They don't wear those in case of cockpit fires. Unless they want their face burned off at more than 2,000 degrees F.
Frankly, I think the end of 370 would have been horrible beyond reckoning..... if anyone had remained conscious through the last few hours of the flight.
I tend to think that it was lights out after the first ten to fifteen minutes, and it was all autopilot till fuel exhaustion thereafter.
And yes, the Glomar Explorer used to be a noticeable artifact in both Long Beach and San Diego. Growing up in a nuke-sub family..... we tended to appreciate such things long before even Hearst News knew they existed.
Those memories fill me with warmth, and with pride.

You can always pick out little bits of the Constitution to give the feds more power than they should have...
Its pretty clear the Founders wanted a count of everyone, every 10 years, so they could apportion the House seats... and that Congress could then pass law so that could be done.
The intent was to get a count every 10 years... not to create an invasion of the Peoples Privacy... or force them to speak when they did not wish to.
Yet the result of the Over Lawyerization of the Law... the overcomplication of a simple idea... is then used by the Fed Gov to give itself power, the Founders didn't really intent...
But then again.... Rights are soon going to be Collective vice personal anyway (once Obama gets one more idiot on the Supremes...). Posted by: Romeo13 at April 16, 2014 12:27 AM (84gbM) Hide posts from (84gbM)
Just keep sayin' you're takin' the Fifth. They're only asking the questions to find out if they can pass an unconstitutional law to make your lifestyle illegal without too much pushback, at which point they'll have you on record as being a violator -- so you're saving everyone time and energy by taking the Fifth now.

You are in the thoughts and prayers of many, Carol.
Per your brother's situation, I also have had a family member put in a DNR. I said, "What, don't you trust me to look after your stated wishes?"
The response was that of course they trusted me, but they wanted to spare me what they knew might be years of painful second-guessing afterward.
Insofar as there might have to be a subjective judgement-call decision made, they wanted it to be relegated to medical professionals. Ones who regularly make such calls and are distant enough from the individuals in question not to be haunted about the thought of erring.
Your brother may have been thinking along the same lines. Trying to take some of his heavy burden off of your shoulders.

Could in fact be a pulled muscle.
Or as the eldritch horror suggests, appendicitis. Be ready to move fast in case it might be.
Or hernia. For which you also in certain rare cases should be ready to move fast (i.e., incarcerated or "strangulated" hernia).
Or perhaps just indigestion. I've had occasional strongly persistent dull aches that I could have sworn were something really seriously wrong, that were ultimately just gas pains and gone by the next day.

In that classic Detroit muscle-car way. Just as with its Sixties forebears: really fast in a straight line, don't ask it to handle or stop particularly well.
I have seen that engine transplanted into various other vehicles over the years. Including a seemingly bone stock and boring basic Buick Regal with the cheesy plastic trim, and a Datsun Z.

As recently as the late Nineties, I would pick them out a few times a year. Done in now by lack of spares?
It's one of those frontally distinctive cars that you're most likely to notice when it's coming the other way, at least in my experience.
And then amidst your frantic hand-flapping and pointing at the proverbial _rara avis_, all of the non-car-nuts who are with you are saying, "Wait, what? You're excited about that thing?"

Depending on which day of the week you ask that question, you might get a very different answer.
Because, for one: ahead of its time in which regard?
Pure engineering and mechanical innovation without regard to market success? Or huge market success based on witty repurposing of merely modest engineering? Because ultimately the car business is driven by economics, and the latter matters.
By way of example, I think I'm with the Hickster in admiring the pioneering big GM front-drives. But they don't really have much by way of traceable design-DNA descendants. Whereas the smaller four-cylinder front-drives of the same era have distant progeny who are everywhere today.

Is a 1930s design that didn't hit it really big until the 1960s, the Beetle, something to be reckoned with under the category of significant Sixties cars? Or must a design have been new in the era?

All woozy were the Night Owl Crowd,
And Daywalkers reigned.
"Beware the Democrats, my son!
The lies they tell, the ill-cut quote!
Beware the Moonbats, and shun
The many times that they do vote!"
He took his verbal sword in hand;
Long time the Proggy foe he sought --
So read-up he on Alinsky
And sat sometime in thought.

Weight, power, battery life, transmission thru deep water, etc. They have to survive a crash and fire so it's all super heavy duty vs. commodity PC hardware.

The most memorable food, an item I'd buy in the US if I saw it, from my week in London was Paprika Pringles. There is pretty much paprika everything there but not so much here.

I don't drink much. 24 beers would probably take me about 14 months. same with hard liquor. guess I could do a marg just for the hell of it.
I am not mad as much as sad. the dumb twerp is devious, stupid, a liar, funny, inventive, warm, an asshole, entertaining, completely hopeless, and just not worth it.

TurboTax barfed on me yesterday and could not e-file for state. Instead of trying to talk to online help, just printed it all out and mailed it. So now got a receipt from USPS of when I mailed it in.

Phoenix/Jean Grey was on her first death when they did the original. They offed her in 137 and the classic 'This issue: Everybody dies!' cover was for 142: http://www.comics.org/issue/35133/

One thing you can check. I am not saying this is the case but check anyway. One of the most common mistakes that happen in SSDI claims is the application process.
If you have a copy of his original application check and see what type it is. To my knowledge there are three types. One for SSDI and SSI together and one for each type alone.
If by chance his original application was for SSI only it will take a longer for the process to finish for a disability claim because some desk jokey has to make the call to switch it over to a disability claim.

And sometimes it just helps to talk about it.
