Well due to power and network issues I'm cut off from my prepared ONT and usual links. Which means you get the detritus that I just happen to have open at the moment. Enjoy!
Richard Fernandez: The Cold Civil War Has Begin
Much of the shock following the removal of Brendan Eich from the position of Mozilla CEO came from the realization that, in a manner of speaking, America was now at war. True it's a culture war, not a physical conflict. But if you were waiting for the moment when the Cold Civil War actually begins, this might be it.
Well if you want a culture war, I'll give you a culture war. And you will not like it.
Don't mistake my indifference towards your cause as acceptance or tolerance in any way, shape, or form of your fascist means.
Mozilla Has Rights. Just Like Hobby Lobby.
In now a famous "You Tube" moment, Bill O'Reilly of the Fox News Channel, went on Letterman to be the recipient of the host's rude and sophomoric antics. As the segment shifted into high gear, O'Reilly asked Letterman a pointed and direct question: "Do you want the United States to win in Iraq?"
To the surprise of no one but his sycophants, Letterman could not or would not answer the question. When pressed by O'Reilly to answer, the best he could do was to play to his mostly left-leaning audience for cheap debating points and say, "It's not easy for me because I'm thoughtful."
What Money Spent on Public Education Gets Us: Nothing
I'm pretty sure this chart has appeared here before but in case it's new to you, this is why you should reject every new proposal to spend any more $$$ on education.
And yes this is inflation adjusted.

13-year Old Boy Suspended for Twirling Pencil in "Gun Motion" Manner
The bullies have found a new bullying tool: Zero tolerance and brain-dead administrators.
According to Ethan Chaplin, he was suspended for twirling a pencil in math class. He says that a student, who have been allegedly bullying him, yelled to the teacher that "He's making gun motions, send him to juvie." The school responded by suspending Chaplin and the Vernon Schools Superintendent Charles Maranzano insists that it is the only appropriate response because he must investigate any time that a student claims to be uncomfortable or threatened by another student.

Meanwhile, quietly, she had begun the process of seeking contact with her birth mother through the local authority.
She may have been given up for adoption but surely, Kayleigh reasoned, she would have more in common with her own flesh and blood than with her adoptive parents.
Why? It's not like culture or values or love are built into our DNA. We're perfectly capable of loving people completely unrelated to us (spouses and friends) or even completely different species (pets). But yet people make a fetish of blood relationships.

Need some help/advice/suggestions:
Friend of mine's son (?) just diagnosed with full-on autism. Has tests set to run at local Children's Hospital as per-req for school's IEP. *ALL* he wants from them is the testing, NOT any treatment. He's concerned that the hospital will pressure him on that.
I suggested that he find a local "Parents of Autistic Kids" support group, but also not crazy about googling for that (how would you vet such a group?). I'm thinking, also, that there must be decent on-line fora that he can tap into, but darned if I know how to help him with that.
He's in the Dayton, OH area if that helps.
TIA!!!

Quite possibly. But of course we're only hearing the daughter's version of things.
But just because you don't get along with the people who raised you does not mean that your bio-mom (who already gave you up once) will be any better in the long run. Because if shared blood always meant better rapport, then why aren't mothers and daughters always the bestest of buds?

I have considerable respect for the acumen of Richard Fernandez, but I think the Cold Civil War, or Civil Cold War, had started already. Quite a while back. Many decades.
I remember Pat Buchanan's "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP Convention, for example.
And in retrospect, the diagnosis was correct, but the proposed cure ("fix bayonets", essentially) was badly timed with regard to the popular zeitgeist.
Average Americans were hugely relieved that the Cold War had wound down and not led to Armageddon. They were happy that the First Gulf War hadn't led to massive bloodshed among the troops. And they were tired of wars. In a mood to declare victory on all fronts and not have any more damned wars for a while. To include domestic cultural wars.
Clinton made a few half-hearted stabs at changing America in a fundamentally leftward direction (Hillarycare, "assault weapons" bans) but then decided he was more interested in enjoying the White House chefs and the Oval Office interns.
The factors that lead to internecine cultural wars were still there, of course, and they simmered away beneath the pot lid of superficial Nineties prosperity, to burst out later with renewed force and danger.

Does anyone know where to get HV switches that have on/off transition times
So far I've only found Behlke and contacted them about one of their units, but I'd like have more options.
I'm considering putting a circuit together myself, but want some prices to compare to for the finished units (which my professor prefers anyway since it saves time).

*deep breath*
Be aware that joining any autism group is like stepping into a hornets nest.
There are the "autism is horrible and ruining the parents' life groups"-Autism Speaks
The "Hey, we're super left wing but shhh don't tell!" groups- Autism Society
And then there's the "Vaccinations caused autism, try some chelation" groups - National Autism Association
Honestly, I've yet to find any autism group worth belonging to. Nor have I found the school district to know jack shit what to do with my autistic son.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but my advice is to tread lightly before joining any group.
Posted by: Lauren at April 07, 2014 11:06 PM (hFL/3)
There are indeed a variety of looney-tunes autism groups....but some can be mined for helpful techniques while not going looney-tunes yourself. For instance, the school's first, last, preferred, and mandated technique is usually to give up on educating the kid and medicate him/her into oblivion so as to damp down "trouble". Almost all the looney-tunes autism groups are against this sort of institutionalization and have ways of thwarting it. That said, if you have any sort of a meeting with those sorts in your home -- count the silverware before and afterward.

Not of their own accord, but the ferryman has a way of arriving when least expected, and he will expect a passenger when he gets there.
I believe in actuarial tables. And although the Justices all get top notch health care, several of them are now in an age bracket when, statistically, people do just up and die on not much notice. Or become impaired to the point where they cannot perform at a level consistent with SCOTUS service.
This makes getting Senate control out of Dingy Harry's hands all the more important.
And makes electing a non-Democratic president of suitable temperament in 2016 absolutely imperative.

I'm a big fan of boycotts.
Hopefully if we can get to where half the country are boycotting the other half of the country, and the other half are boycotting the first half, it will be a step towards the realizations that there are two different nations awkwardly and incompatibly crammed into the same body politic, like Ray Milland and Rosey Grier in _The Thing With Two Heads_.
And really wouldn't it be better for everyone in each of the two nations if we could simply work out a Velvet Divorce the way that the Czechs and the Slovaks managed to do?

Well a social system based mostly on clans and family relationships often is stable and effective in harsh environments e.g. Afghanistan, Iraq, much of Africa. The problem is that it usually leads to low-trust societies with high levels of violence and little economic or cultural advancement.

The release date for the sequel to "Prometheus" has been moved forward. Sigourney Weaver has signed on to play... Ripley. Fassbender and Naomi whatsherface are returning. Apparently other actors from previous Alien flicks have also committed. In order to get this all to work, it is said that the story will involve... time travel. Also, the terrible screenplay from the first won't be a factor in this new one. The writer from "Lost" will be replaced with a much better writer to script Prometheus 2. His credits include "Sex and the City".
Boom.
I'm looking forward to it. I anticipate "Exorcist2: The Heretic" level of awesomeness.

Cold civil war? Problem is you're at war with the degraded remnant of your own institutions, not the idiots "on the other side".
A board of directors firing a fresh highly-touted CEO because of entirely unrelated stuff, that is being mau-mau'd into it - there's your board of directors apparently forgetting its sole responsibility (fiduciary, to share/stake-holders).
O-care? Well there's institutional collapse in all directions (incl. the private sector), but just pick the nukyler one, the SCOTUS. This absurdly multifariously unconstitutional "law" (or suggestion, apparently) should have been trashed 9-0 on any number of grounds. The actual decision on the issue chosen resoundingly confirmed that the constitutional system is broken, and the very values and principles that formed its basis are now giving way to alien - and incredibly stupid - radical celebrations of State power.
I attempt to boycott an amazing array of things (it's easier that my consumption habits don't include many of the main targets anyway). Don't actually tell most people, of course.
But good luck "boycotting" virtually the entire "education", entertainment, and government industries (I like that term). Remember that unionized "heroes" (cops, firemen) are in many cases just as big a component of your enemy as the FSA or the alien leftist scum (even WI dare not get serious about the massive theft in THAT part of the budget, even though addressing it would surely yield equal/better results than the instant and dramatic ones from just crushing the teacher's union). $$$$$$ Good luck forming a coalition when most private sector segments are dying to emulate the sickening and destructive path of the chickenshit and rent-seeking health insurance industry (checked any of your stock portfolio companies' websites recently? howz the "green" and "inclusion" content there?)
The institutions are gone, the electorate is mostly gone. Cold civil war? Nah. Middle stages of long-term decay, now speeding up rapidly and deepening and broadening in its virulence. Ain't no pendulum here, don't be looking for a swing back.

How would a non-prepared ONT be different?
An interesting experiment - one I've toyed with in my mind from time to time.
And perhaps now is the right time to do a little exploring in non-prepared ONT subject response space.
Hmmm. Yes. So many possibilities. I must head to the laboratory and begin the preparations.

321 I find it odd the Cobs work as hard as they do on the ONT. It's like finely polishing a rock you throw into a lake to watch the ripples. eman - no, I don't see physical separation coming. That is, apart from that already happening (CA moving to TX, etc.). Inertia is the greatest force in nature, and I cannot imagine the "separation" getting beyond migration. OK, a few uppity states (ID on gun laws, for example). Maybe some of that. But overall? Nah. Just more sorting out, by state.
navybrat - hmm, don't see kinetic financial events, either. CA has been bankrupt probably a few times the last 10 years (wildly unconstitutional and unprecedented, of course - or, in today's parlance, "just another day in what used to be the US"). Look at 2008. Ridiculous. It eats at the economist in me that there simply is no way that the bubble-reflation/lawlessness that erupted after 2008 can continue indefinitely. But it's already gone a few years past my expectations.
The combination of a naturally incredible economy (legacy factor) and a rapacious lawless parasitic public sector can lead to LONG periods of decline, without precipitous drops. I cannot imagine the police or fire pensions just failing, for example. When state constitutions and sane monetary practices and lawful financial approaches are no bar - and they're no longer even speed bumps - anything is possible. Money will be printed, imagined, stolen, and otherwise arranged.
I think dramatic, kinetic outcomes (crashes, "burnings", separations, civil wars) are extremely unlikely. My anger and despair at it all match or exceed yours, but I just don't see these things in the cards. Slow, ignominious decline seems far more likely.

Maet, prepped or improvised, your ONTs are sublime. As I recently commented, though my indolence and despair at the state of things have tremendously reduced the scope of my web consumption, the ONT here has got be one of the most interesting, intelligent feature on any blog. The content and often the comments make for an amazing read.
But I promise no more verbose DOOM! comments tonight. Probably should just ask Anna if there are any interesting new WWII books or museum restorations (still have the article on the Iowa-class BBs fire-control computers bookmarked but unread).
Speaking of museums, friend was just in Vegas and said there is a cool museum for the nuclear test site in a Vegas federal bldg. (haven't looked up anything on it yet). Like me the friend had his hands in nuke stuff a ways back and he said the docent and curator basically gave him a personal tour as they gossiped about nukyler stuff and personalities.

"That is the process we are in now. Will it, can it change?"
No. Yes, in theory.
"Can the American spirit re-emerge after a long, dormant period?"
I'd frame it differently. That spirit still burns bright in many. But they are greatly outnumbered by people with alien sensibilities, and then there's the vast wasteland of the barely-engaged (beyond their own narrow lives) in between. And as I noted, the institutional rot (not just a recent thing) may have reached an irreversible point. See Maet's item above about pencil-twirling leading to an "incident". Try to imagine ANY element of that real story occurring in America - hell, even 10 years ago.

I figure from there on over to the NM nuke museum, Trinity site. Then as far east at the Pacific War museum in Fredericksburg TX.
Romeo13, indeed, a string of smaller aviation museums in CA I've not yet visited, from Camarillo on up (Paso has one, Merced as you mention). And the Seabees museum at Pt. Mugu.
And when I finally do the Oregon wine trip, there's Evergreen (near pinot country) and the PT boat near Portland.

Gracias for the Burbank airport tip, zombie. I do pass there on the I-5 now and then, so will have to program in a stop some time.
Up your way, is the Rosie the Riveter thing worth seeing? Can't recall if it's just a memorial or a museum - have only quickly seen the sign while zooming past on the way to Sonoma or beyond.
Oh - and another small one. And unique. In Palos Verdes there's a Nike (Zeus?) anti-air missile installation that has been revived by a volunteer group. Apparently most of the gear was left in working condition when the military decommissioned it (huge hatch doors, missile rail that rises up from below). I still distinctly recall the time, as a young kid, that my family was driving by on the way back from MarineLand (an early version of Sea World) nearby and they had a missile up out of the bunker. Huge white thing. You could imagine the boys yelling at dad to stop - but I don't think we did. At least I caught a glance of an actual SAM right here in America, funny thought.

Damn - Rosie's museum also has fallen to the disease? The same one that sent the USS Iowa to languish in Vallejo, and now to LA (where, I have been told, it's also languishing, in terms of the numbers that were projected/promised and the ones realized)?
Gotta hit the rack, so a quick flippant remark won't do it here, but - this whole historical distortion and whitewash thing is extremely depressing and infuriating. Yes, just part of the ongoing nightmare.
But I am almost sick to think of the passing of the WWII generation - that in itself bothers me a great deal - and the "victory" of the idiots of moral imbecility now dominant in America (and the world, for longer). The country is so dumbed down. And to distort/hide the true history of WWII, to try to cloud up the most pristinely clear moral calculus presented to a nation in modern history ..... sickening.
