So far I've only found Behlke and contacted them about one of their units, but I'd like have more options. I'm considering putting a circuit together myself, but want some prices to compare to for the finished units (which my professor prefers anyway since it saves time).

Also, I had to threaten to sue our school district to get my daughter to be allowed to bring her own lunch to school. Their compromise was to allow her to leave school to eat elsewhere. Can't have other students seeing her eating a real meal. And, this is in a Red area of GA. The Fed boot on the neck of schools is that strong.

The same thing will happen with healthcare. Money that should go to doctors, nurses, and hospitals will go to government bureaucrats who administer those programs. Need some help/advice/suggestions:

Friend of mine's son (?) just diagnosed with full-on autism. Has tests set to run at local Children's Hospital as per-req for school's IEP. *ALL* he wants from them is the testing, NOT any treatment. He's concerned that the hospital will pressure him on that.

I suggested that he find a local "Parents of Autistic Kids" support group, but also not crazy about googling for that (how would you vet such a group?). I'm thinking, also, that there must be decent on-line fora that he can tap into, but darned if I know how to help him with that.

He's in the Dayton, OH area if that helps.

I have considerable respect for the acumen of Richard Fernandez, but I think the Cold Civil War, or Civil Cold War, had started already. Quite a while back. Many decades.

I remember Pat Buchanan's "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP Convention, for example.

And in retrospect, the diagnosis was correct, but the proposed cure ("fix bayonets", essentially) was badly timed with regard to the popular zeitgeist.

Average Americans were hugely relieved that the Cold War had wound down and not led to Armageddon. They were happy that the First Gulf War hadn't led to massive bloodshed among the troops. And they were tired of wars. In a mood to declare victory on all fronts and not have any more damned wars for a while. To include domestic cultural wars.

Clinton made a few half-hearted stabs at changing America in a fundamentally leftward direction (Hillarycare, "assault weapons" bans) but then decided he was more interested in enjoying the White House chefs and the Oval Office interns.

The factors that lead to internecine cultural wars were still there, of course, and they simmered away beneath the pot lid of superficial Nineties prosperity, to burst out later with renewed force and danger.

And then there's the "Vaccinations caused autism, try some chelation" groups - National Autism Association

Honestly, I've yet to find any autism group worth belonging to. Nor have I found the school district to know jack shit what to do with my autistic son.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but my advice is to tread lightly before joining any group.

There are indeed a variety of looney-tunes autism groups....but some can be mined for helpful techniques while not going looney-tunes yourself. For instance, the school's first, last, preferred, and mandated technique is usually to give up on educating the kid and medicate him/her into oblivion so as to damp down "trouble". Almost all the looney-tunes autism groups are against this sort of institutionalization and have ways of thwarting it. That said, if you have any sort of a meeting with those sorts in your home -- count the silverware before and afterward.

88 Fun chemical story: I was cleaning out the cabinets in our machine shop and while rummaging found a tin, pulled it out. Some of the powder from the rim got on my hands. I turned the tin around and the label reads: Hydrofluoric Acid This is probably the only normal acid I actually fear. I was thinking you can powder other acids and they look like the powder on my hands right now, mixed with the latent moisture that makes HF acid and then it absorbs into the skin and does terrible things and then kills you by scavenging your calcium (though there is an antidote). I didn't think about the fact that HF would be a gas, and it was a fun couple minutes while me and the shop super figured out it was just a buffering material for the jar (already removed). Then we went over and yelled at the guys in the lab next door.

All of the national groups I've run into have major issues that have always caused more irritation than benefits for me. I'm sure it's like this in any group, but it seems like people get very emotionally invested in whatever treatment they're doing at the moment, and can be hostile to anyone taking a different path. Then of course there are the self advocates who are furious with the decisions that their parents made and the groups that are looking too make money off desperate parents. Ugh, what a mess! But, I would tell them to ask the person doing the IEP eval if they have any references to local groups. They may luck out and have a good, sane group in their area, even if they just join in online and don't go to the meetups and such.

Hopefully if we can get to where half the country are boycotting the other half of the country, and the other half are boycotting the first half, it will be a step towards the realizations that there are two different nations awkwardly and incompatibly crammed into the same body politic, like Ray Milland and Rosey Grier in _The Thing With Two Heads_.

And really wouldn't it be better for everyone in each of the two nations if we could simply work out a Velvet Divorce the way that the Czechs and the Slovaks managed to do?

It always scared the poop out of me because I could imagine getting it on my skin without knowing it and waking up the next morning with the bones in my hand or arm dissolved. Perhaps I heard too many tall tales. I dealt with heavy solutions of cyanide by the thousands of gallons and later designed many treatment systems for it. I had a healthy respect for cyanide but no real fear.

223 In my lung ago youth, I worked in a semi-conductor fabrication factory. We use HF EVERYWHERE. I used it all the time. It was dangerous and caused bad skin burns even at low concentrations. The Flouride counter ion is really active. I used to make up solutions of HF and Nitric Acid to clean the quartz glassware in the deposition system I ran, which would get covered with Silox deposits, and that was the only thing that would clean them off. Wore lots of "PPE".

The release date for the sequel to "Prometheus" has been moved forward. Sigourney Weaver has signed on to play... Ripley. Fassbender and Naomi whatsherface are returning. Apparently other actors from previous Alien flicks have also committed. In order to get this all to work, it is said that the story will involve... time travel. Also, the terrible screenplay from the first won't be a factor in this new one. The writer from "Lost" will be replaced with a much better writer to script Prometheus 2. His credits include "Sex and the City".

Boom.

I'm looking forward to it. I anticipate "Exorcist2: The Heretic" level of awesomeness.

But it's already gone a few years past my expectations.

The combination of a naturally incredible economy (legacy factor) and a rapacious lawless parasitic public sector can lead to LONG periods of decline, without precipitous drops. I cannot imagine the police or fire pensions just failing, for example. When state constitutions and sane monetary practices and lawful financial approaches are no bar - and they're no longer even speed bumps - anything is possible. Money will be printed, imagined, stolen, and otherwise arranged.

I think dramatic, kinetic outcomes (crashes, "burnings", separations, civil wars) are extremely unlikely. My anger and despair at it all match or exceed yours, but I just don't see these things in the cards. Slow, ignominious decline seems far more likely.

As I recently commented, though my indolence and despair at the state of things have tremendously reduced the scope of my web consumption, the ONT here has got be one of the most interesting, intelligent feature on any blog. I'd frame it differently. That spirit still burns bright in many. Try to imagine ANY element of that real story occurring in America - hell, even 10 years ago.

Posted by: non-purist I just by sheer accident stumbled on something you might find fascinating: At the "Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park" adjacent to the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, there is a beautiful domed art deco rotunda. Inside (and outside) are memorials to aviation pioneers, including the world's only "grave" for Amelia Earhart -- a memorial plaque saying she died on such-and-such date in 1927. Other (real) graves for aviation pioneers as well. And in front is a 1/10 exact model of the Space Shuttle Challenger, with a memorial plaque for all who died in the explosion. The interesting part? The whole thing is directly underneath the take-off runway for the Burbank Airport, so every couple minutes a 737 or whatever flies about 100 feet over your head. I've never seen this mentioned or described anywhere! Definitely worth checking out if you're into aviation.

Up your way, is the Rosie the Riveter thing worth seeing? Can't recall if it's just a memorial or a museum - have only quickly seen the sign while zooming past on the way to Sonoma or beyond.

Oh - and another small one. And unique. In Palos Verdes there's a Nike (Zeus?) anti-air missile installation that has been revived by a volunteer group. Apparently most of the gear was left in working condition when the military decommissioned it (huge hatch doors, missile rail that rises up from below). I still distinctly recall the time, as a young kid, that my family was driving by on the way back from MarineLand (an early version of Sea World) nearby and they had a missile up out of the bunker. Huge white thing. You could imagine the boys yelling at dad to stop - but I don't think we did. At least I caught a glance of an actual SAM right here in America, funny thought.

If you're into Nike missile bases, there's also one on the aforementioned Angel Island, as well as one on the Marin Headlands near the animal rescue center near the Golden Gate Bridge. It is quite common for convention centers to be unionized in right-to-work states....which means that everything on the floor of the center is union, usually obnoxiously so (as in, you -- not being a journeyman electrician -- can't plug in a power strip).

518 What is it with the Right and zero-tolerance? What are we supposed to do, create a Common Core of school behavior codes? Create a federal agency to oversee school discipline? Eric Holder's on board already. It's their neighborhood, if they want to create a Saturday labor battalion for dress code violations, let them. I'm sick being told my duty as a patriotic American is to get between two 13-year-olds and their fascist beast of a vice principal.
