— Ace Hmmm. He reaffirms the church's opposition to gay marriage, but says the church could, maybe, support some types of civil unions.
So what I'm trying to say is that he's an incorrigible, relentlessly hateful bigot who supports Jim Crow for gayz. Anyone who supports Barack Obama's 2007-2011 publicly announced position from 2012 onwards is just a H8r.
Timing is everything.
The Pope reiterated the church's longstanding teaching that "marriage is between a man and a woman." However, he said, "We have to look at different cases and evaluate them in their variety."For instance, civil unions provide financial security to cohabitating couples, "as for instance in medical care," the Pope said in a wide-ranging interview published Wednesday in Corriere della Sera, an Italian daily.
A number of Catholic bishops have supported civil unions for same-sex couples, including Pope Francis when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2010, according to reports in National Catholic Reporter and The New York Times.
But Wednesday's comments are "the first time a Pope has indicated even tentative acceptance of civil unions," according to Catholic News Service.
...
"The situation in which we live now provides us with new challenges which sometimes are difficult for us to understand," the Pope told leaders of religious orders, adding that the church "must be careful not to administer a vaccine against faith to them."
That last statement seems important, signaling, as it seems to, that Francis' prioritization is bringing the Word to everyone, and avoiding positions which would "vaccinate" people against hearing it.

"Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error."
Romans 1:22-27 ESV
The "vaccine against faith" the Pope refers to is codified in the very Word he hopes to bring. Only a fool could fail to see this.

I'd like to see the Catholic hierarchy moved to a poor community in Africa, or maybe Asia. Why should the capital of the RC church be in Rome, a city where the wealthy have played for generations?

Virtually everyone was until about 20 years ago.
Back in the early 00s it was normal to see the argument that the State Media was on its last legs, but looking at their triumph with "gay marriage" it looks like they have actually moved into a new, Orwellian level where they can create support, out of whole cloth, for ideas that were considered ludicrous a generation before.
This will not end well.

Agree. Civil unions are a legal solution to the problem of inheritance and other property issues for couples who aren't otherwise eligible for the legal protections of marriage. Why would the Pope even speak about this?

I wonder if the Pope was speaking of civil unions in response to pressures on the church to approve gay marriage, pressures you would expect he would strongly oppose.
In other words, maybe he's saying "hey, there are civil unions available-- you don't need a church marriage!". That's a position which was "progressive" and "tolerant" right up until the Democrats decided it was the essence of hate and a violation of civil rights on a par with racial segregation.

I've always been a supporter of civil unions. It's time for Churches and other religious institutions to get out of the business of having ANYTHING to do with the state's certification process of these things.
Let the state unionize anybody and anything they like.
Leave the Church alone to sanctify the unions it deems worthy of the term "marriage."

There is no 'right time' and 'right place' for the Word of God. It is not something to be deployed at just the right moment. It is eternal and inviolate. It is our job to spread the word, and God's work to bring it to fruition. We are not to look around for the right circumstances for speaking of God's salvation.
The leader of the Catholic Church ought to understand this. I am at a loss.

Yes.
Every radical leftist queer knows this.
Everyone who has even browsed the issue knows this.
So, you have to questions their motives--if they can already legally get what it is they claim they have a "civil right" to, then, what are they really after?
Remember when they all swore the most solemn of oaths that "civil unions and no more?"
How's that--entirely reasonable and fair--compromise been working out?
How many of those states that agreed to their compromise still have civil unions on the books?
Or has their relentless lawfare forced marriage each and every time--betraying the agreement--even to the point of overturning a fricking constitutional amendment?

WASHINGTON--The U.S. Senate narrowly defeated President Obama's nominee to oversee the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division due to Republican and law enforcement objections to the role he played in the defense of convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Only 47 senators, all Democrats, voted to advance Debo Adegbile's nomination while 52 senators voted to block him, including 7 Democrats. Vice President Biden presided over the vote in the event he could break a tie, which was unnecessary after Democrats failed to muster enough support.
Adegbile's defeat occurred even after Senate Democrats last year unilaterally changed the Senate rules on judicial and executive nominations to lower the threshold from 60 to a simple majority of votes to end a filibuster.

I don't give a hoot-n-hell about civil liberties for gays, whites, purples, hairy armpit biker relationships or anyone. It is the marriage sacrament they are after. If they ever get the Catholic approval to marry in church they achieve what they wanted: it is "normal" for Mary to have two Daddy's, and for Johnny to have two Mommy's. Yeah. Right. I am not saying that it is impossible for either couple to raise normal children who are heterosexual by choice (cause, hell, look at Chaz Bono...but look at his Mommy! Or, don't!). It is difficult to raise a child in today's culture with two functioning heterosexual parents, much less the other choice. I am sure they love their surrogate/adopted/womb transplanted child as much as I do...I am sure they do. I am sure some are much better parents than the dirt bags who sit around smoking pot and eating bags of Cheetos, one of the yellow vegetable choices with their Big Mac. Sure. And my late Golden would have been a great dad as well, far better than Rep. Grayson. But I digress!
I object to my future unborn grandchildren being taught about sex, how to put on a condom, and homosexuals in grade school. I object to these same children, attending church, to have a gay pastor preaching rainbows and having to explain this to these children when they should be a) in school learning about reading, writing, history, art, and math. In church they should be learning about the Bible prophecy and Jesus. So, you betcha, I object, strongly to gay marriage.
Bite moi.

And you're committing a sin by looking at a woman's ass and wanting to have your way with her in your mind.
I'm not homosexual (maybe if I was I could get laid?) but it seems to me that a lot more heavy sin burden is placed on homosexuality these days by Christians compared to adultery, theft, etc.

He could have quoted the "render unto Caesar" bit. He chose not to do so.
He could have affirmed other institutions right to handle the issue as they see fit, while reinforcing Catholic doctrine. He danced around it.
This is not the first time he has used imprecise language in order to not be pinned down, while still leaning left.
How is it that people who acknowledge the pervasiveness of Gramscian thought can't acknowledge that it infests ALL institutions, now?

What are you talking about? The church has always been political. It's the most political entity in the history of politics. And it continues to be so today. The Pope isn't an idiot. The acceptance of adultery was simply a previous stage in the breakdown of society. There is plenty of crowing about it, even now, but society has moved on to the New Thing, that is, Fred is now poking Joe, husband of Rosie.
Next it will be Fred marrying into Joe and Rosie's family for group poking. A while after that, it will be Fred poking Joe Jr., son of Rosie, or maybe Champ, their Husky/shepherd mix.
It is the way of societal decay... everything in stages.

The Senate voted 47-52 Wednesday to reject controversial nominee Debo Adegbile as an assistant attorney general.
Seven Democrats voted against moving forward with President ObamaÂ’s nomination of Adegbile, which the Fraternal Order of Police and other groups opposed because of his involvement in the defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1981.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) then switched his vote from yes to no in a move that allows him to bring the nomination up again for a future vote.

And that is what the radical leftist homose are after--they want society, including all religions, to tell them that the sin they feel in their heart is not a sin, to make them feel better about whatever it is they feel is wrong.
We can't do that--no matter what laws we pass, no matter how much we are forced to celebrate their specialness.
We--society--didn't put the sin there, we can't take it away.
You want the sin taken away, you get yourself right with God.
Or deal with it.
But quit with this bullshit of tearing down society--it won't work and it'll make everything worse for everyone, including you. And if history is any guide, probably worse for the homos, much, much worse.

Discrimination is NOT inherently bad, context is all. That's a brainwash lie. To suggest no harm exists to the institution of marriage and a lot more exists with legalized SSM is laughable. It's not about whether any individual straight will be denied a marriage license DUE to legalized SSM. It's a cumulative impact that is not normal, healthy or good. You will not convince any sane person otherwise with experience, nor is is accurate to compare it to interracial marriage opposition, etc.
But we now live in a world where obvious truths are called lies and folks who have no idea of what actual reasoning power is dictate (because more of them exist now are more vocal and have control of media, education, etc.) so that the inmates run the asylum and it's like talking to a brick wall of irrational emotional liberalism not based on reality but how they WANT the world to be.

So, anyway, this prior conservative and devout Catholic woman, faced with uber-liberal brother turning gay shortly after his priest sibling died and parents deaths, well, hey! Next thing you know she votes Democrat, proudly helping historic black president be elected x two... somehow excusing her pro-life leanings, which still exist, but: the poor! Democrats help the poor! Capitalism bad! Socialism good! Bad to judge anyone except Protestants! We are all in the same boat heading for rapids!
I am actually not sure if this relative is ok with gay marriage in church, as this relative is not ok with non-Catholics taking the sacrament of the Communion in their church. But the gay brother sure as hell made her more liberal and became warped with whatever his explanations are. She also, through him, is a strong believer in Global Warming!

That's the pathology of a militant. It doesn't matter what they are militant about.

One does not also condone friends or relatives of activity they realize is wrong for a host of very principled reasons. It does not connote IRRATIONAL "hate" etc.
This is why this whole debate is poisoned. It's like arguing a prolifer is only such over hating women or wanting them barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. It's not their position. It's a distortion and a lie.
Sure wish such folks would debate honestly.

I know the context is taxes but it applies to what a civil union does for a person. It confers on them legal rights from the govt to enforce a contract. Marriage in a church is making a promise to God which he will enforce when you stand before him.

The rising ire of a national coalition of black pastors reached a climax Tuesday as the organization announced a campaign to call for the impeachment of Attorney General Eric Holder on the basis that he has violated his oath of office by “attempting to impose same-sex ‘marriage’ throughout the nation…”
According to a press release, the Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP) said it will “launch a grassroots effort seeking to secure the signatures of one million people calling for Attorney General Eric Holder to be impeached.”

This. They don't really want marriage ... they want to tear heterosexual marriage down. Most gays that get married end up regretting that decision in a few years.
If they just wanted to deal with partner hospitalization issues, a signed and notarized power of attorney ( medical ) is nearly free in most states. A full power of attorney gives gays far more control over a spouse's business than a mere marriage certificate.

It isn't about him considering Civil Unions. The point he is making is that gay couples with children are a fact in developed nations, and the Church has to figure out how to deal with this fact.

"He's right in that there are a lot of gay Christians. "
I think this is a gross overstatement. There aren't a lot of gay ANYTHING unless its makeup artists in Hollywood. Given that the homosexual population is under 5% of humanity, and homosexuals are not exactly inclined to go to church or be Christians, that statement is simply not accurate in any way.
There are homosexual Christians, such as this lesbian interviewed on the White Horse Inn, but a "lot" is simply ridiculous.

Somewhat clever form of "if God made man, and man sins, God made man sin". Or "God made Satan, therefore God created evil."
In truth God made man, God gave man choice and reason and guidance. We're separated from Him physically and in memory to give us a place to make mistakes and to recover from them. If you sin in God's presence, you have to be ejected because God and sin are completely incompatible. God gave us a Savior in order to take on Him our sins so that we can be clean and satisfy the laws of Justice and Mercy at the same time. Sin exists because opposition in all things is an eternal law. Without sin there is no righteousness. Without virtue there is no vice. But to be God or in the presence of God those things must not be in any part of you.
Homosexuality exists because we all have flaws, and we are invited to come to God in meekness and humility, to invite Him to help us with our flaws so that we may become strong.

I don't know a single person who legitimately hates atheists for being atheists. They also certainly exist. I don't know any.
I DO know a lot of people who hate gays and atheists that try to undermine their traditions, in a misguided attempt to create a new normal.
What they are doing, without the torture and murder, is a Secular Inquisition. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. If they truly feel their lifestyle is normal, that their views are normal, than they should LIVE THEM and let them serve as an example. This is maturity and sanity, and not adolescent temper tantrums.
Everyone, of every belief structure, needs to stop fucking with other people to fill a hole in their own heart. It won't help except to tear down the world around.
The very world that, built on the foundations they loathe, gives them the luxury of spending time trying to undermine them.
And you can't Torquemada anything.

==========
Two anecdotes:
1. In 2008, my Brooklyn Catholic church held a Christmas bazaar in its basement. It was filled, wall-to-wall, with paintings of Barack Obama, drawings of Barack Obama, statutes of Barack Obama and other idolatrous odes to Barack Obama.
It was horrifying.
2. My local suburban Chicago church ran a letter from the local Cardinal touching upon a social issue in the weekly bulletin. The locals were infuriated! I heard one guy in the parking lot asking aloud why they were focusing on this crap rather than talking about "what they're doin' to the unions!"
At some point, I had to find another church.

Also, he should read Jesus again. One thing Jesus was on and on about was divorce. The proscription against divorce is exclusively Christian and goes throughout the gospels. That's just one example. In many ways, Jesus was far more fanatical than Paul.

That was, without doubt, a Presbyterian USA church. Please do not judge all Presbyterians by them, as there are conservative denominations which came from the Church of Scotland (also where the term "redneck" originated...my ancestors, darlin' Scot Covenater's).
Presbyterian USA is the most liberal of all of the Presbyterians, and their yearly meetings resemble US Congress in their socialist and secular leanings and paths, of which many, including me, have recently fled.

The usual response is "they aren't gay, they're pedophiles." The presumption being that being sexually attracted to a younger age trumps all sexual inclination, so they can't be homosexual. Its nonsense, but it comes from the same line of psychobabble that says rape isn't about sex. Yes, yes, it is. Its not ONLY about sex, but it is definitely about sex.

March 4, 2014 Bill Donohue comments on the homily given by Pope Francis today at his Mass in the Santa Maria residence:
Militant secularism at home, and militant Islam abroad, are the two greatest threats to Catholicism today. Speaking of the latter, Pope Francis said, "there are more Christian martyrs today than during the early days of the Church." Communists in North Korea are also killing Christians at a record pace, and Communist China continues its persecution.
The pope rightly said that "the world does not tolerate the divinity of Christ. It doesn't tolerate the announcement of the Gospel. It does not tolerate the Beatitudes. And we have persecutions: with words, with insults, the things that they said about Christians in the early centuries, the condemnations, imprisonment....But we easily forget. We think of the many Christians, 60 years ago, in the labour camps, in the camps of the Nazis, of the communists: So many of them! For being Christians! And even today...But (people say) 'today we are better educated and these things no longer exist.' Yes they do!...They are condemned for having a Bible. They can't wear a crucifix."
The Holy Father is right. Islamism and communism are responsible for murdering Christians and persecuting Christianity. But the insults, the condemnations, and the censoring of religious speech that he addresses stem from another source: militant secularism.

Abso-frigging-lutely.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is putting on her producer's cap to make a film honoring the memory of Glenn Burke, a professional athlete who came out of the closet long before Jason Collins or Michael Sam.
Out at Home: The Glenn Burke Story will focus on Burke's tenure with the Dodgers and Athletics during the 1970s, a time when he shared his sexual preferences to his teammates and management but not the general public. The athlete died of AIDS-related causes in 1995.

"The pope is just another mortal schmuck like the rest of us. No better, no worse."
Personally I agree - but I'm not RC. To RC's, he's the boss. What he says, goes. They are the last remaining Feudal Society. No voting... what the Pope (King) says, goes.
And what he's saying is in direct defiance of the written Bible. So there's that.
I want to remind the catholics here that things like this have happened many times in the history of the Church. They're called Schisms.
You don't have to create your own church. There are plenty of Protestants who have gone before you, and have a nice place waiting for you.
If you want a church that's a lot like RC, but has rejected the papacy, largely for these kinds of things, look to Lutheran MISSOURI SYNOD.
Lutheran's have also had this same discussion and have split. Evangelical Lutherans have gay bishops; Missouri Synod are more Bible Based.
Take a look at these and others. The Word is still out there - you just have to go looking for it.
If you're serious about your Faith, you'll be amazed at how some churches really do base things on the Bible. Who knew?

There are certainly many sinners. All of us sin. If we banned every sinner from hearing the word, very few would be receptive.
Homosexuals familiar with the word already know that. Their relationship with Christ is between them.
But how does supporting cohabitation get people to hear the word?
Only people shouting rhetoric and hate in ignorance believe the church does not love them because of their lifestyle. There is no particular emphasis on that specific sin.
A change in the perception of the church via the truth is what is needed here. No some bending of doctrine as a public relations gesture.
As usual, the Pope has left some room here for interpretation by essentially stating each specific situation needs to be considered on its merits.

1. Has anyone confirmed this? Because the only source I see is a single report that's being passed around the wire.
2. Has the Vatican issued a statement about the shift in position?
To answer question 2.
http://reut.rs/1eXKKMN
The answer is no. The Vatican denies that the pope supports civil unions. So given that number 2 is no...what's the more likely scenario.
1. The position of the Catholic church is shifting to be more liberal.
2. Some reporter really wishes that the position of the Catholic church was more liberal, and heard what they wanted to hear.

The point is, society is full of idiots lacking critical thinking skills today.
If you ask a typical progressive, they ACTUALLY believe many of the social norms you listed are archaic and rooted in 'isms" and other irrational hatreds or mere familiarity.
That's the problem.
You cannot have a conversation with a liberal, because they do not get it. They assume they are right on a host of issues, attributing "conservatism" to someone merely breeding contempt by familiarity. It does not even occur to them that norms are not merely in place to discriminate because the redneck is not hip, it's because he is "ignorant" etc.
They never ask WHY the norms are there, beyond poo-pooing it to suggest it's born of hate or "just the way we always have done things" etc.
It's just sad.
It's also a scathing indictment of how the good guys failed while socialists invaded schools, media, movies, etc. and we fiddled while Rome burned. Every generation must be re-taught, culture and sanity do not prevail automatically, especially when lunatics are there at every corner trying to undermine it.
