In a rush today but didn't want to leave you hanging.

Here's a few photos for you to discuss. Some of you have seen them, others have not.

I spotted this in a Hardees parking lot:

This is for sale just down the street from me. Check out those wheels!

Here's another view of that one.

I was behind this on the interstate for several miles. Wanna know how I know he was hauling taller than 13' 6"?

He tapped the brakes before every single overpass and every single sign.

Then there's this '57 Thunderbird which pulled in $60k at a recent Barrett-Jackson auction.

Wow!

13 Is that a "power bulge" in that Falcon hood? Good God.

A 289 (/302) fits under with room to spare; neither Falcon or Mustang was engineered to support the weight (let alone torque) of any V8, let alone blocks of the tank-hull class. Either someone welded up a lot of gussets and doublers, or the doors fly open when you punch it.

Falcons weren't broken in until you could see through the floorboards. This one is setting up so pretty on what it had instead of suspension, that same someone must have remade the spring perches. On a car made of sheet metal (not the body -- the car -- that's a lot of pounding.

yeah, body twist is common on unibody designs. Mopar makes/made various stiffeners to counteract the torque on their B bodies.

Done right, it's unobtrusive and effective.

23 I had a '61 Falcon about 20 years ago. I never in a million years thought anybody could "hotrod" a '61 Falcon. It was a fun car to own, but it was lacking in the power. I did enjoy 3 on the tree shifter confusing the hell out of people when they saw it.

26 That 62 Falcon would need some beefing up to handle the torque, but the 2nd gen 64 through 66 would have no problem since many came with a 289 option, and the Mustang was built on the Falcon platform

Nice. One quibble...the Mustang II was not on the same chassis as a Pinto, I don't care what Wikipedia tells you. Shared some suspension components with, but not the same chassis; it was bigger and closer to the Maverick chassis but there again, not quite the same. Common misconception.

Holy hell, go find another dealer. The MSRP on it is a bit over 35K, so unless he gold plated the damn thing he's crazy as an outhouse rat. Heck the Shelby convertible MSRP is only 60K.

   My brother had a 63.5 Falcon Sprint. 260 v8, 4-speed and 3:54 rear end. Those Falcons sported Fairlane suspension components and bigger brakes.

   Everything worked well with itself, the engine torque curve, trans ratios, suspension, etc all collaborated.

   Not a world beater for speed, 105 was tops, but a perfect sweetheart to drive.

Actually you're early for one and late for the other. Eldest son's B-day is the 2nd and youngest son's B-day is tomorrow.

There's a guy here in NC that has a collection of the TR-10 (not the official Triumph name for them, but that is what they are commonly referred to), he's got the saloon (sedan), the estate wagon, the pickup and the van. An LS engine in one would be madness...in a good way...

44 @26 There was a 427 option on the semi-unibody Fairlane, too, but that doesn't mean you couldn't tear one in two if you revved it before engaging the clutch. A Boss 302 could rip a 14" gash in a '67 Mustang engine cradle. Ask how I know.

The whole package of sub-frame connectors and Shelby and Monte Carlo braces was under $200, and they weren't too hard to install. Made you wonder why the factory didn't put them in. What a difference.

The "Futura" V8 Falcons often got called "the poor man's Mustang." And then you'd laugh, because, like, the Mustang was the poor man's Mustang. But you sure could have a lot of fun with one, breathed on a little, stiff shocks and stuff. The Comets were an even better sleeper, looked just like Grandma's, until they spoilt it with that drag-racing program. After that, everybody wanted to see what Grandma's Comet would do.

Best sleeper ever was the Lark with the Avanti R2 engine.

49 Does anybody know anything about Auto Parts Warehouse? I am looking for a replacement transmission control computer for a 1991 Honda Accord and they have a variety of "remanufactured" replacements - no idea what the differences are between them or if they are any good. The original factory version had a couple weak spots - that is why I need to replace mine - so just getting a used one might be not be a good idea.

Those pieces are not called 'Reman', because they were never sold or put into service before they were 'remanufactured'.

100 Mavericks had one of the worst fuel cap/fill setups ever, similar to early Mustangs but worse. Impossible to fill one without spilling fuel on the bumper. I had a Maverick in snow country though and the donuts were awesome, esp with 4 people in the car.

Any tie rod needs regular lubrication, contrary to what the manufacturer tells you. Using parts with lube capability will forestall many unfortunate occurrences.

Torsion bars need to be used in a properly maintained suspension--ie the shocks should be adequate and the bar adjustment correct.

123 Scottst@113, yeah found some replacements but it means a minimum of $200 for the cats, whatever for the labor if my fat ass has trouble getting the car up high enough to get them installed on the end of the long tubes, then whatever to have a nerd retune the 'puter to run with them rather than without.

kbdabear@114, the only exhaust leaks on it is the big one at the end of the single outlet SLP "Big Mouth" exhaust, My 99 Tahoe exhaust smells worse and its got all its cats and all 4 of its O2s, car has been tuned to run mid 12s like it is and until its LS1 finds its final resting place in my other project car, I need to be able to move it around from place to place without spending a ton of cash, just bitchin in general, I knew what I was getting into with it.

They were reputed to have larger main bearings. There was a time, in this country, when you could make a living with a single-axle truck rated at 90 HP.

I have a big 1953 truck with a Reo Gold Comet, 331 c.i., rated 124 HP. It was King of the Road.

The 240 was based on the 170. I'd been told the pickup-truck 300 was a big 200, but on-line resources say it was based on the 240. I had bad luck with the 240.

A Mustang 200 with tri-power would have been a very pleasant car to drive.
Six weight: 285 pounds.
289: 465 pounds
390: 560 pounds.

Any suggestions on how to find the right tires for it? I know how to find the size etc, but what I'm looking for is how to identify tires that will have good ride characteristics (quiet road noise and good handling) at a competitive (ie: cheap) price. I've seen some tires at Costco for about $350/4 (with something like a 65K mi tread warranty). My dealer quoted me close to $500/4 for a iirc 30K mi tread tire.

Unless you spend big bucks and aren't racing you probably wont notice the ride characteristics between common tires. Tire wear warranties will give some clue as to how hard the tire is. To increase wear resistance the tire "rubber" tends to be harder so will feed back road roughness a little more.

139 My experience with high mileage tires is the rubber gets real hard as the tire ages and traction got away. Had a 1980 full size Merc. wagon with tire that looked like new but could not accelerate for shit in any accumulation of snow.
