127 Off topic, open thread question for the Horde: Youngest son was assaulted at his job as a Safeway manager around Christmas. Thrown to the ground and choked by a much larger guy. Son was just about to start cutting when sumdood realized his mistake and waited patiently for cops to arrive. Court date was today, and the defense offered to pay if youngest dropped charges. Prosecutor not really looking to go to trial, and said this was normal. My question is WTF? Any legal advice from the Horde will be taken as worth I paid for it. Max fine for assault in VA is $2500. Youngest was told to start cutting earlier given any future scenario.

They didn't need to do as much trick photography as you would think though.  Yes Rhys-Davis is tall.  In fact he's at about the right size difference they wanted for the difference between a dwarf and the hobbits.  So they didn't need to do triple shots when they are all standing close.  Just doubles with the humans and elves and then the dwarf and hobbits.

244 All: No damage other than some bruises and a red neck from the choking. Youngest called me today from court to tell me the potential deal, and my initial response was to insist on an apology and promise to never visit the store again. My thought was that the guy was stressed out over Christmas and had some money issues (looking for Western Union to be open, youngest couldn't help that, and I realize I didn't put the circumstances in the first post) I just wasn't sure of the pay to make it go away thing with the law. BTW, Safeway was very supportive and offered all kinds of victim and mental counseling to the youngest. no gripes with them at this point.

We lost power in an ice storm 10 years ago. House got down to 42 on day 9. Kids were 7 and 11 at the time. A year or two ago I learned that they have very fond memories of sleeping under 6 blankets in the bed with mom and dad, and parked in front of the fire with the sofa pushed up to the hearth.

I think the best way to fix the problem is to replace the pressure valve  this  spring when I no longer need the furnace. I don't put much stock in mythbusters.

Sometimes a doctor says you can have it, sometimes you decide for yourself you can have it, and you go to the store and buy it, and sometimes you go to  the street corner and you buy it.  You body doesn't know the  difference, your body just knows you  gotta have it.

So sell cigarettes or don't, but stop pretending at least half the people coming in  there are any more or less pure  simply because they have a prescription.

One of our worst dining experiences ever was at a Pakistani restaurant on Spring Valley near Central. We, um, didn't fit in and the owner all but told us our kind weren't welcome. Probably cause my wife was wearing a cross. It's now a nice little Palestinian restaurant with typical Middle Eastern hospitality. Yum!

Well water. Press varies from 30 psi to 50 psi. The  boiler  (and the valve) is  almost 30 years old.  It worked fine until a couple of years ago. I think it  just needs  replaced.   Those rubber  washers give up after awhile.  Thanks for your help.

So - in order to completely avoid any NBC "coverage" and also to see the few events that interest me (which don't include the few over-done ones relentlessly covered by most networks), is there a good streaming site yet identified?

 

Cross country, biathlon, hockey (men's), downhill, ski jumping - that's about it for me.  Noticed last time that the abundance of cameras (and some decent commentators) actually made biathlon pretty watchable, even to non-geeks. 

 

Went up to Lake Placid one time back in the late 90s to x-country ski.  First day I was out on the trails, turns out the Russian junior biathlon team was there training.  Very interesting to watch the shooting (only caught glimpses of the skiing as they whooshed past me like I was standing still).  Recall the coaches - unshaven, profane (I speak russki), chain-smoking, barking at their charges.

 

Followed a local's advice and went up to the boblsed run towards the end of the day, got a free ride down on the 4-man (saving $50).  Rented speed skates and skated at the outdoor oval where Eric Heiden's impossibly huge thighs won all those medals. 

 

If my oil well would just come in, one bizarre interest I would indulge is pioneering a new biathlon version, this one using real rifles (not sissified spendy Anschutz customized artworks) like Mosins and Mausers, with practical targets (profiles with cover at 75-100 yards, not colored disks @ 50) and other realistic elements.  Was skiing one day years ago at the YMCA of the Rockies north of Winter Park in CO.  Only other person on the huge system appeared to be a biathlon guy, rifle slung across back (no ammo of course), practicing transitions and sprints around the penalty oval.   Damn for somebody raised on the beach I do love me some winter sports.

Yes backflow and expansion tank. I think the reason it has started leaking more  than it did last year (should have replaced valve then)  is because we have been going through some very cold weather. Minus 14 last night. The boiler runs about 95% of the time. Didn't used to be that way. I'm thinking the register fins are covered with dust and dust bunnies. Bad heat transfer.  I will fix that problem this summer.

I don't mind you asking. I just checked and it was set a 30 psi from factory.  Boiler also  appears to have a pressure adjustment on the inlet to the furnace that shouldn't be messed with.

473 Ronster - Well, it IS possible that the boiler pressure is exceeding 30 psi. I repeat, if the expansion tank isn't working (always possible), or the regulation of the inlet water pressure (".. Boiler also appears to have a pressure adjustment on the inlet..") isn't working, then the safety valve is just doing it's job. It is easy to blame the valve, but as often as not I that find something else is the problem.

yuzu?  somebody mention yuzu?  have a small tree in the back yard.  smallest seedling I ever saw.  it's doing OK, actually already bloomed (I think the warm Dec/Jan fooled it).  don't expect much fruit for a few more years, but looking forward to the ponzu, squeezing on grilled fish/chicken, and also adding in to my other fruit preserves for a special touch.
