— Ace "Why now?"
But the objection is primarily about timing. Allah's take is that they will do something DREAMy before 2016.
Boehner wants to do this but some sizable chunk of the caucus — a majority? a sizable minority? — prefers to wait. Here’s the question: If he could get more of a Republican buy-in next year, why shouldn’t he wait? Matt Lewis argued the other day that amnesty opponents will always gin up some sort of excuse related to the timing to keep kicking the immigration-reform can down the road, but I simply can’t believe party leaders and their business backers will send the GOP nominee into battle in 2016 without arming him with some sort of amnesty to show Latino voters. It might be a limited one like DREAM, but something’s going to happen.

Boehner just now realized that the only way to lose the House was to push amnesty?
Good grief. All last year, and especially through the shutdown, all we heard from the establishment was "don't change the subject from stalincare". Who changed the subject one week into this year? The fkn GOP, that's who.

for the lack of any movement on illegal immigration. Not a bad thing to
run on, no?
I doubt it. To n-dimensional chess, and it makes to many people on your side very angry and mistrustful. If Boehner thought this would tamp the issue down and repair the splits in the GOP, he was dead wrong. NOt to mention that Ryan's presidential hopes are now nil for the next decade. Nonetheless, I'll take it.

Black unemployment, especially Black males under 30 is at an all time high, but, hey, let's import a few million Hispanics to take the jobs no American will do. As it is, right now, no American gets offered those jobs because it is easier and cheaper to hand Juan/Juanita $50 at the end of a shift than it is to cut a check and pay all the taxes.

The problem for the GOP isn't immigration. The problem for the GOP is the widespread perception that conservatives are racist. And unfortunately, nothing that happens is likely to change that short of a complete year of public anti-minority diatribes from Liberal leaders (and that's assuming that it didn't take even longer for news of them to start filtering past the media's safeguards for the liberals).

The democrats stir hatred of whites among blacks to keep them in line, and stir up hatred of straights to keep homosexuals in line, stir up hate of corporate managers and bankers to keep the union members in line, etc. It is all they have to offer, since their actual policies help no one.

And now the base believes them, and hates them for it.
Look, the job of enforcing laws falls on the executive, not the legislature. Obama has proven over and over that he will violate or not enforce laws he doesn't like.
No argument from anyone here.
Republicans can now say we had ideas, we wrote them down, but we do not trust Obama to enforce any new laws since he won't enforce the current ones. That will resonate with a lot of voters outside the base
This is the crux and where we disagree. Even if Hispanics DID believe that Republicans want amnesty, that doesn't mean they'll vote GOP.

Most of the people who immigrate illegally by getting entering legally and then never leaving are from Asia, Africa, and Europe. See Zeituni, Obama's Aunt.
Read a big sob story awhile back about a Polish immigrant in Chicago who couldn't bring all her family over for her wedding because there was a moratorium on tourist visas for Poles traveling to IL, because in a previous time period not a single Pole "tourist" who flew into O'Hare returned.
And now expecting people to follow our laws is "anti-Hispanic." Fuck that.

I always wonder how they can tell if our current immigration system is broken, because we don't have a current immigration system (or at least one that is visible to illegals from the Old Mexico).
Even more amazing is that the skilled educated people that ARE trying to immigrate here legally soon find out that there is a somewhat hostile INS-run immigration that wants to complicate the process for them.

I repeat, if the GOP House passes any form of Immigration "Reform" that changes the status of illegal immigrants to legal immigrants: I will vote for Democrats in the 2014 federal elections.
It will not matter to me if my particular House Representative (who happens to be Republican) votes against the legislation.- I will vote for his Democrat challenger.
It will not matter to me that my U.S. Senator up for reelection is a Democrat who will surely support Amnesty and that his Republican challenger will not have even had a chance to vote against the legislation that he openly condemned and swore he never would have supported. - I will vote for the incumbent Democrat.
I will protest against the wretched betrayal of the GOP the only way I can: I WILL VOTE TO __TAKE AWAY__ THEIR POWER.

Once again, delusional. "armed with some sort of amnesty to show Latino voters"?
there are no Latinos who currently vote for the GOP that will refuse to vote for the GOP b/c of amnesty.
There are no Latinos who currently vote for the DNC but-for amnesty.
This is unbelievable. Who are these people? Isn't there a single person with a brain involved in this?
And I love the idea of amnesty opponents ginning up a timing issue. We aren't ginning up a timing issue. We are saying don't do it. The timing issue is ginned up from the pro-amnesty crowd.
So much dishonesty.

The corporations that are paying for amnesty votes are under the delusion that illegals will be good cheap workers, instead of welfare whores.
The RINOs are cooking up this "Mexican Republican" fantasy in order to self-rationalize letting into the country a bunch of illiterate tribesmen from a failed socialist state in at the behest of their incredibly shortsighted paymasters, a bunch of corporate yes-men retards. The same idiotic yes-men that though they could get commissions in bad loans forever during the housing bubble.
We have had enough of them immigrated here for the next century. We need more immigration of folks that grew up in eastern Europe, and understand what havoc socialism causes.

So, there should be a path to citizenship to them, but, no one else, especially not their felon parents who committed the felony and thereby forced us into compassionately granting citizenship to their offspring. Furthermore, no GangBangers get citizenship. You wanna be in a gang in East L.A., you got to pay.

3. Continued crony payments to democrat bundlers using tax dollars

Depends on who you consider the base. From the perspective of the GOP Establishment, the base consists of the corporate types hot for amnesty and cheap labor, the big business money men who bankroll their campaigns and with whom they share common ideological ground. In contrast, they view us as extremists whose ideas are surefire losers even though they're the same geniuses now touting Jeb Bush, bless his heart, as The Candidate to beat Hillary Clinton. And how does one go about getting one of those high-paying political consulting jobs, anyway?
There needs to be a hashing out of differences within the Republican Party. The divisions between the GOP's leadership and its conservative voters go to the bone. Either that rift gets healed or we're looking at a third party split. It's happened before.

Probably the only safe time would be when the economy comes back and unemployment (the real type) is low. Then it can be slipped through. Right now when things are tight (and Pelosi and company are just whistling past the graveyard with their happy-talk) it really isn't politically possible.
And with others I agree - why start this distraction from ObamaCare? why not keep pointing at ObamaCare? When amnesty is brought up just keep saying "We have more important problems to deal with, such as the destruction that ObamaCare is creating as it bashes its way through our economy and health care system." Keep bringing it back to ObamaCare and all of the disaster there and keep the Democrats bringing out the lame excuses like "You get to sleep in and spend more time with the kids!"

@220 Isn't that how the system should work? Boehner obviously doesn't agree with the base but the bases voice has been heard through the elected reps. This doesn't mean to put your trust in boehner but make your voice heard. It has an affect as the current outcome shows.
----------------------
Yes, but the problem is that this isn't the first time that the base has needed to make it's voice heard on the issue. If he'd left it alone after the first attempt, then it would be a "lesson learned" thing. The fact that he keeps trying suggests that he's merely waiting until he thinks the base is distracted.

You would have to outlaw the democrat party. Race and class hatred is all they do. They literally encourage blacks to hate whites and vote democrat to spite them, even if voting democrat hurts themselves in the long run. Democrats preach class hatred in the rust belt states, even as their crony payback schemes take blue collar jobs out of the states and often the country. The democrat party has only three things to offer: abortion, redistribution, and hate, and hate has been the most powerful weapon for them.

I doubt I am the only constituent who emailed Rubio last year, as he seems to be in full mea culpa now (from the little I have paid attention since November). I think he got the message: either listen or be voted out, and he may be voted out. On the other hand, I will vote for him vs Dems. Once you get to DC it must be very hard to fight against the lobbies and special interests. He talked a great talk on the primary trail, and we truly loved him until he started his mess on potential amnesty. Lesson learned, I hope. On that note I trust no politician, none I can think of, to stay true to their word.
Keep their feet to the fire, that is all any of us can do. I am quite weary of the entire thing, but will have batteries recharged for the fight.
Make 'em show their hand. Term limits.

1. Take over the media. (Okay, that's a fantasy.)
2. Fight the media as much as possible.
3. Work very hard to recruit "minority" candidates and spokespeople who are competent and articulate. This MATTERS, which is why the Left reacts with hysteria against, say, black conservatives.
While a black GOP candidate will not get any more black votes than a white one, the visual image weakens the Narrative, especially among white observers.

I think it would probably be more like what happened in Canada with the reform party bolting from their version of the tories (progressive conservative party of canada). The socialists from labor took over for almost 20 years and passed a lot of crap. But the reform party grew in power and eventually gobbled up the progressive conservatives into the conservative party of canada.
And now they have stephen harper and conservative government that has grown larger with every election since 2006.

That would be the libertarian wing of the Republican Party.
Libertarian are under the delusion that people always choose their own best long term interests. They do not.
If they did, everyone would save their money, and invest it, buy gold, or buy a home. The only people renting would be twenty somethings.
But it doesn't work that way. People vote their emotions, and they make spending decisions based on whatever is easiest or most fun. People who think long term, and make purely intelligent decisions are too rare for libertarianism to work.

And in the meantime, Boehner feels emboldened because he survived an attempt to remove him, and goes ahead and forces Amnesty through.
I'm not saying don't try after the mid-terms. I'm saying that attempting it during the middle of the term carries it's own risks that might not otherwise be in play.

A regional party can win seats in the house and senate. Not necessarily the presidency. Our system rewards two parties and punishes third parties on the presidential level with winner take all.
You could get a better result for everyone if California wasn't monolithic in awarding all its electoral votes for president every four years to the democrat. Awarding votes based off of congressional district would be a better system than we have now, and easier to control fraud by minimizing the big cities where it occurs.
With a system like that, you would get a republican president for years to come.

The economy is in shambles, thanks to the past five years under this administration, the rising debt, disastrous housing market, rising unemployment, and now, Obamacare...which the CBO said in a Congressional hearing will ruin the economy/employment for decades to come (or the rest of his life). So, dear Congresscritter/ politician, how will amnesty improve these situations in this economic disaster? You will add to the welfare rolls, correct?
Granted, some illegals will now be forced (I guess?) to pay for insurance. Or, like many, will just ignore the "penalty" tax which cannot be enforced or, as Dems are probably planning, simply add more to Medicaid rolls---which Obamacare has done for many: they take from Medicare to pay for Medicaid, thus "punishing" the elderly, many WWII and Korean and Vietnam veterans who actually had jobs and put money into Social Security and Medicare. Redistribution.
Now, what many who vote Dim don't realize, the blind being led by the schemers and Schumers, the black voters and pot heads, is that their Medicaid benefits and food stamps et all will be cut if amnesty is made real. Right? You can only spread redistribution so far without anything coming in. 2.5 million out of full-time work and benefits, per the CBO, is going to take a bite, in addition to the others already unemployed.
When I get some political energy I may call Rubio's office and ask the questions above. I am paraphrasing, but think his past statements, which he has backed off from, involved putting illegals on the path to taxes. This, when, uh, is it 47% of Americans don't pay taxes? er, I guess that Romney fella was correct on that one? That number will soon be higher, one would assume, by the next presidential election.
I am not smart on math/taxes/numbers/figures/statistics. I would rather set myself on fire than take algebra again, and thankfully sons inherited husbands vast math brain. It might have made sense a decade ago, this push for amnesty (even though it did not then, either, to not have a secure border when 9/11 proved a huge drop in drugs coming over border when it was briefly sealed), it makes less sense now to not seal the border and figure this out for current legal citizens and those who are applying for legal citizenship who will help improve the economy.

1) Just because you predicted it doesn't make it a good idea.
2) Illegal immigration is not now dead. It's merely pining for the fjords.
3) The down side is an angry, dispirited, mistrustful base that hates the leaders who now share the blame with Obama, rather than having the focus exclusively on him where it belongs. Other than that, it's aces.

Let me show you some numbers:
5,832,401
4,508,474
2,783,175
889,788
576,221
In our system that top number wins because they have the most votes. And guess WHAT? That top number also wins in Canada because they have the most votes. That top number was the number of votes the conservatives got in 2011 in Canada. That is nearly 40% of the total votes cast.
In 1992 the US election had:
44,909,806
39,104,550
19,743,821
Top number percentage 43%. That was what got Bill Clinton the rapist into office.

As it is illegal for hospitals and schools to ask if they are illegal, I cannot figure what they will add to our country. No taxes. Cash only, part of which helps the national gross of Mexico limp along (the money they wire back is #2 behind oil in Mexico).
They already have free healthcare in Florida, from free clinics to hospital bills that are never paid. They have free education in public schools, which, in turn, lowers testing scores and standards (as we also pay for interpreters, as, God forbid, they learn English at home). Then they sit in jail, getting three square meals, a dry bed, tv, and weight lifting, which I pay for.
If the penalty of Obamacare cannot be enforced, as, duh, whatever, they did not read the bill...the how in hell can they make 11 million or so pay taxes when they have had it all for free?
If, IF, the black population who blindly vote Dem, and/or the working poor, or hipsters like that surfer dude using his food stamps in California for lobster rolls, were made to understand that amnesty will lessen their freebies, well, they might not be so eager to vote (D) in the next election for pro-amnesty heroes.

Not in the actual elections. Our government is very different from them yes. They have a house of rep like we do and their head of state is similar to our speaker (John Boehner with presidential powers, ugh). They have a senate to rep the canadian "states" with little to no power to influence anything. And a figurehead unifying the country under the crown (governor general).
But their legislative elections are exactly like our elections for the house of reps here.

I've never understood that quote, and I like Friedman a lot. He was the last of his kind.
How do you get the wrong person, say a Progressive/NWO/Dimocrat Congresscritter who thinks we shouldn't have borders, to do the right thing? Posted by: BackwardsBoy, who did not vote for this shit
What Friedman means is politicians are always going to do what is in their best self-interest, even if it means going against their ideological beliefs.
The last time Amnesty failed, there were actually many Democrat Senators that pulled the rip cord, even ones in comfortable blue states were scared because of what their constituents were saying.
Rubio is a good example, he got his head handed to him and now he's suddenly a border hawk. He probably threw away his chance to be President.
Boehner folded because he didn't want to lose his Speakership.
You're never going to elect "pure of heart" politicians, the only way to get them to do the "right" thing is make sure the right incentives are there.
Posted by: McAdams at February 06, 2014 10:38 AM (3QYTt)
This has always been a Dem tactic. Before they could cobble together a governing coalition between the socialists and minorities, blacks were the target of the animus. Across the country, not just the south, the Dems would openly appeal the baser instincts and promise to keep the blacks "in their place" and away from our jerbs.
The Democrat party was the political wing of the Klan.

How can it be "terrorism" if nobody was terrorized? I'm not being silly here. The object of true "terrorism" is to commit acts of mayhem, that usually involve killing or maiming large numbers of innocents, in order to force political change.
