Digging Out From Under the Rubble of Obama's Catastrophic "Success"
— Ace

Peggy Noonan's column is worth reading in full.

Support it or not, you cannot look at ObamaCare and call it anything but a huge, historic mess. It is also utterly unique in the annals of American lawmaking and government administration.

Its biggest proponent in Congress, the Democratic speaker of the House, literally said—blithely, mindlessly, but in a way forthcomingly—that we have to pass the bill to find out what's in it. It is a cliché to note this. But really, Nancy Pelosi's statement was a historic admission that she was fighting hard for something she herself didn't understand, but she had every confidence regulators and bureaucratic interpreters would tell her in time what she'd done. This is how we make laws now.

Her comments alarmed congressional Republicans but inspired Democrats, who for the next three years would carry on like blithering idiots making believe they'd read the bill and understood its implications. They were later taken aback by complaints from their constituents.

The White House, on the other hand, seems to have understood what the bill would do, and lied in a way so specific it showed they knew exactly what to spin and how. "If you like your health-care plan, you can keep your health-care plan, period." "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor, period." That of course was the president, misrepresenting the facts of his signature legislative effort. That was historic, too. If you liked your doctor, your plan, your network, your coverage, your deductible you could not keep it. Your existing policy had to pass muster with the administration, which would fight to the death to ensure that 60-year-old women have pediatric dental coverage.

The leaders of our government have not felt, throughout the process, that they had any responsibility to be honest and forthcoming about the major aspects of the program, from its exact nature to its exact cost. We are not being told the cost of anything—all those ads, all the consultants and computer work, even the cost of the essential program itself.

Ben Domenech is skeptical that Obamacare's managing to sign up 7 million people (for some definitions of "sign up") when it was originally projected to sign up (as in "really sign up") double that is somehow a major success.

Have you heard? Obamacare survived! It got to that magic number it was looking for to make everything right!

Or rather, it got to half the number the Congressional Budget Office predicted it would get to after the Supreme Court ruling.

Either way, itÂ’s totally okay now and is absolutely going to survive and be the law of the land forever and ever despite anything those nasty opponents of the law tell you.

...

This is why talk of the 7 million figure as salvation from supporters of the law is completely bonkers: all you did was meet your lowered policy expectations.

By failing so catastrophically early, their recent failure is, by comparison, a relative success.

So here is what Obama and his supporters now call a "success:"

CBOUIprojectionscorrected.png

Obama asked for a primetime network shot to announce his Big Victory, and the red diaper babies of the networks actually refused him.

I'm not sure if this is just about the bottom line, or if the networks (and especially their news divisions) are feeling a bit used for repeatedly bending over for Obama whenever he sexts them a booty call, but otherwise treating them like the Town Pumps they are.

And maybe they've noticed that Obama's people always claim to only know the numbers they're interested in promoting, while claiming to have no idea about the ones that might not be so attractive.

When Obamacare talks about Obamacare, its popularity goes down. Having a prime time address just gives Ted Cruz and the GOP a night to talk bad about Obamacare.

21 They don't know the number of new Medicaid enrollees other from what I've seen today. They're saying 3 million, but all states haven't reported, and even those that have only reported through Feb. And they're touting it as a success. Never mind that it's going to bust budgets at the state and national level. (IIRC, it's 6k/year average spent on a Medicaid patient. Let's cut that in half to assume they're below average, unlikely, but still. Right there, $9bil/year that has to come from somewhere and we're not done yet.) I'll say it again: Mandate "officially" waived by fiat. Subsidy clawback waived in 2015.

25 Noonan's wrong. Obamacare isn't a complete disaster. It allowed a bunch of college educated white women 5 years of joy while they called half the country, "Racist!" And it only cost them the right to take their children to the best pediatrician they could afford. For shitty moms, that is a GREAT deal.

Posted by: Oschisms at April 04, 2014 11:52 AM (y9dfJ)

26 And maybe they've noticed that Obama's people always claim to only know the numbers they're interested in promoting, while claiming to have no idea about the ones that might not be so attractive. So, how many years does it take to notice this? It is clear that if this Administration claims it doesn't know something, then that thing is "not helpful" to them. If it goes in their plus column, they can provide it to very exacting detail. And they don't even pretend like it would ever be any other way. This is part of the reason that the GOP in control of the House is useless. First of all, they don't know how to do the theater of a Congressional hearing. But mostly, when they get someone from the administration up there and actually ask a tough question, the administration official simply lies and says they have no idea.

I really have no time or patience for such people any longer. What is due is a hugely embarrassed public recantation and self-denouncement. Not further comment or analysis.

Leave those to people who got it right originally, and who had correctly figured Obama for a dangerous choice. Such as, for example, this blog's proprietor.

40 See, them Dems, when they hold hearings, they actually show up. (I don't know how many times I have read about House Republicans not coming to their important hearings.) Then they ask something to get a reaction soundbite that will play on the news over and over and over. Now, it helps that they have the news in their corner to play along with the outrage of the day game, but you have to have something to work with. Getting an admin official saying " I don't know what you are talking about" is not outrage worthy.

The bulletins from the  Imperial Japanese General Staff in 1944 were more grounded in reality than the statements from  the  Obama Administration on the success of ObamaCare.

I'm think the way to attack it is to go after it piece-meal.  A little bit here, do something that is popular to "fix" a problem, but the fix will actually hasten ObamaCare's end.  It will be much easier to do this with the election coming up and it will make opposition to these "fixes" seem irrational and expose the "mend it, don't end it" mantra as a lie.

It's like the people I work with    preening about     meeting their performance indicator goals every year.   Most of the time they DON'T reach their goals, but they come within the minimum threshold, meaning they didn't reach their goal 100%, but they got within 90%.

COWORKER:  What do you mean we didn't hit our goal.  Sure we did!

COWORKER:  The 90% threshold IS our goal.  As long as we make that we're fine.

MWR:  No, the 90% threshold is the minimum we can make without incurring a penalty.   We should be trying to reach the   ACTUAL goal, not settling for barely scraping by.

78 Obamacare didn't and won't reduce the number of uninsured. It didn't and won't reduce the cost of health care. It didn't and won't do much of anything. Except one thing: Raise taxes. And not just actual taxes. The increase in premiums is an increase in taxes as well. The makers are paying more taxes(premiums) so the takers can get more free shit. That's all O-Care is...a $2T tax hike on the upper middle class and evil rich (mainly white) people.

82 I can guarantee I'm counted twice in Obama's 7M #. I registered with healthcare.gov, but the insurer that offered me the plan I wanted told me the only way they could guarantee I could keep my current doctor was if I signed up directly with them. I wasn't eligible for any subsidy anyway, so I did. I'm getting daily emails from Obamacare telling me I can still sign up. So I can guarantee I'm double counted. So Obama killed my insurance once and counted my twice as getting "new" insurance. (New insurance that is 2x as expensive as my old one and with inferior specialist care. But I did manage to keep my old doctor. I think. I won't know for sure until after May 1 when I try to use my new insurance.)

Posted by: Costanza Defense at April 04, 2014 12:04 PM (ZPrif)

83 I'm think the way to attack it is to go after it piece-meal. A little bit here, do something that is popular to "fix" a problem, but the fix will actually hasten ObamaCare's end. It will be much easier to do this with the election coming up and it will make opposition to these "fixes" seem irrational and expose the "mend it, don't end it" mantra as a lie.

95 "Sell Buicks."

Speaking of selling Buicks, or not selling them, anyone else notice that auto dealer lot inventories are getting absolutely out of control again?

Government Motors in particular are just cranking out product like crazy, but the product is not moving off the lots.

I was out and about recently in a part of the SF Bay Area I haven't been to at street level in a while. There's a big old multiplex theater, with the typical enormous parking lot, next to an auto dealership.

Well, the theater is now closed, and the huge parking apron has now apparently been taken over by the car dealership for overflow inventory, and they have ten metric fucktons of said inventory just sitting there.

And this is in a comparatively economically vibrant region of the country!

So yeah, when I hear economists musing about how this business cycle has topped out, the plain proofs of everyday life are backing it up as well.

I don't believe Peggy Noonan has ever said,  "I was wrong," about her Obamagasms,   and I'm almost certain she'll vote for Hillary if it comes to that.      Until she    redeems herself for    those transgressions     she is    nothing but    a useful voice for eloquently stating certain things,    not an oracle to whom conservatives or Republicans should turn for guidance.

147 I don't believe Peggy Noonan has ever said, "I was wrong," about her Obamagasms, and I'm almost certain she'll vote for Hillary if it comes to that. Until she redeems herself for those transgressions she is nothing but a useful voice for eloquently stating certain things, not an oracle to whom conservatives or Republicans should turn for guidance. ---- I certainly don't think these pundits need to be respected. I'm with Drew, they are all basically pawns. In general, so long as they are advancing my preferred position, great.

But it hardly matters. She spent the entire campaign season, from the GOP convention to the moment of that final column (if I haven't imagined it) doing two things: (1) snickering about Sarah Palin on MSNBC; and (2) slobbering over Obama as if she were Christopher Buckley herself.

Remember the old caution the hotshot pilots shared with one another from the movie _The Right Stuff_: "Don't screw the pooch."

One-time jet pilot Bush screwed the pooch. An epochal financial wipeout happened on his watch. Making the Bush brand enormously toxic in the public mind., and also badly damaging the brand of the party under whose banner he stood.

Now the party establishment braintrust are talking about running yet another Bush. Since the first two Bushes were such amazing successes. And with the sour taste still on the public's palate from the last one of the two. Utter brilliance right there.

My recollection is she just started noticing that Barack Obama is exactly what most of us thought he was; A corrupt, talentless hack, who made rich white liberals feel good about themselves. She is trying to finesse the fact that she supported this horrible bastard, and she's criticizing him now that it's too damn late to do anything about it.

223 Happy Friday all !!!!! Feel good story of the day. The mum-of-two had bought two packets of red grapes from Asda as part of her normal home shopping order. The day after the delivery she took one punnet to work to snack on before lunch, where she noticed the eight-legged addition to her elevenses. She said: “I was picking the grapes and thought these are a bit manky because some of them had little holes in them. “Then I picked up another one and it had white fluff on it. When I looked closely I thought, it’s sticky. “I looked at the grapes to see where this white stuff had come from and realised it was a nest and a piece of web was on the grape. “Then as I pulled the grapes apart I could see something move.” She quickly squashed the spider and took a picture of the web and egg sac before sealing the packet and taking it to environmental health officers at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, who are now investigating. The spider is believed to have been a South African sac spider.

I don't even look at her column as    an indictment of    Obammycare   (because it's not, as has been stated)   so much as an indictment of the process by which Obammycare was foisted on the masses   and continues to be foisted on us   every day   as  if we should be GRATEFUL for it.

I've no doubt Peggy would LOVE socialized medicine and just doesn't like   how this particular law is being carried out.    But I don't really care about that, and if she ever comes out and says so I'll be first in line to tell her to eat shit (as I've done in the past).   But when it comes to talking about the PROCESS and its    baseness and unconstitutionality?    Yeah, she got it right.

Neither. The networks are concerned that a big, blaring, primetime Mission Accomplished moment might come back later and bite Obama and the Democrats on the ass. They're saving him from himself.

Really, if you sit down and think in the manner of a sci-fi author, you could lay out a path for that to happen with the current methods of the government.

It wouldn't be as much of a stretch as we may have thought a few years ago, but with the rampant communismism going on, the future comes into better focus.

320 The media refusing Obama his victory lap is either false or a sign they are trying to (dishonestly) gain some semblance of credibility. They've done nothing but blindly and I believe, purposely support an absolutely destructive agenda. Replete with historic mendacity and corrupt processes that would have met generous scrutiny if the president had an "R" behind his name, it could not have happened without them. In fact, now that most American's are finding out the truth our illustrious, lying media is becoming public enemy #1. People are waking up to realizing they let it happen. They are the American Vichy Collaborators and it didn't end well for their 20th century predecessors.

I personally wish them a painful death. May their corporations crumble and with them, their destructive, despicable, dishonest propagandists. May they become ashes in the dust bin of history and a lesson for everyone who attempts that vocation in the future.  . A truly "free" press cannot stand without honesty and truth.  Without it, you've become collaborators in exterminating a nation. Good riddance, Neither me nor my family for generations will ever read or watch their tripe, or see it beyond the partisan exercise in prevarication it is,

Posted by: garrett at April 04, 2014 01:46 PM (9Rwbt)

323 ACA is a big part of what is wrong with America in general and the Democrat Party in particular, and Barack Obama specifically. They want power and mean to get it, to screw with our lives, our fortunes, our future and and children. Forever. It is nothing about any principles except this. Many on the Right saw this in 2008 when Obama was campaigning. Vaclav Klaus in the Czech Republic saw it clearer than many Americans did. Yet, Peggy Noonan and many of her fellow travelers were in praise of Obama and his campaign and his promise for America. Surely, McCain was a truly lousy alternative, but I don't think he would have so viciously trod upon our Constitution and the protections it has for the citizens. ACA is a hot mess of unconstitutional demands on the people and private companies. It treads on so much that has been off-limits for government power for the life of this Former Republic, that it beggars the imagination. Peggy Noonan was a pre-election accomplice to this travesty. There is no power on Earth that can compel or encourage me to ever trust her ever again. She and others of her kind sold my birthright and those of my children down the river. There is no simple or easy return or recovery of what has been lost. A new standard of Government Power has been established. She approved of this beforehand. If she was too stupid to realize this, then she is too stupid to advise me now. If she is too corrupt to have realized this, then she is still the same intellectually and morally corrupt person now that she was then. She may repent to God, and He may forgive her. But Peggy and her ilk were supposed to know better and speak out. She failed by either malice or stupidity. Or both.
