Gaming Thread 5/04/2014
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Well, Sony dropped their yearly forecast from a $1.07 billion loss to a $1.27 billion loss. As an investor, yeah, I really can't wait to see those financials in a couple weeks. Though after all these years of huge losses, maybe I don't. Either way, it's keep on keeping on of writing off my stock as a loss.

Throw in Nintendo's predicament (and their investor meeting in a couple of weeks), seeing where Japanese gaming is at in a month should be interesting. Personally, I think Kaz and Iwata should have been out on their asses awhile ago.

But then again, if it isn't mobile, this is about the majority of what you get from Japan: I'm linking to it so I don't get yelled at.

NEWS

So a TV station caught up with Bobby Prince, the guy who did at least part of every soundtrack to pretty much every classic PC game of the 90's. It's an interesting read and watch

• So someone seems to think MODOK is interesting enough to be put into a kid's game.

• Nintendo once again proving that they do not care as they're once again skipping a live E3 presentation

• No idea why you would want to play the upcoming Wolfenstein game as a stealth game but MachineGames is going to accommodate you

• A new fanfest means a new trailer for EVE Online

And don't pay attention to them listing Dust 514 at the end as it's getting shitcanned and morphing into EVE: Legion for the PC. Considering their ineptitude, I can't say I expect much.

• EVE: Valkyrie gets a voice actress, Katie Sackoff is gonna be the main character. Content warning on the vid, there are quite a few f-bombs in it

So there might be a partnership in Hell as Comcast is working on a deal with EA to let you play EA's sports games on the cable box

• This. This could be good

So there wasn't a lot to what they announced but Microsoft gave a scoop on what they're committed to making with their TV studio and properties they're working with on trying to turn into tv shows:

Committed Projects

“Halo” television series
The “Halo” television series is a groundbreaking original series based on the award-winning “Halo” franchise. Award-winning filmmaker, director and producer Steven Spielberg will executive produce the live-action TV series, created in partnership with 343 Industries and Amblin Television.

“Every Street United”
“Every Street United” is an unscripted series of eight, thirty-minute episodes and a one-hour finale, featuring legendary soccer players Thierry Henry and Edgar Davids, focused on the global search for soccer’s most gifted and undiscovered street stars scouted across eight countries (United States, England, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands, Ghana and South Korea). The series culminates this July in a 4v4 street game finale in the shadow of the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Each episode will feature unique and incisive narratives about the grassroots street stars and the communities that shaped them. Industry veteran and eight-time Emmy-Award winning producer, director, writer and editor Jonathan Hock (“Streetball,” “30 for 30: The Best That Never Was”) is directing the series. Emmy-Award winning producer Mike Tollin and Mandalay Sports Media are executive producing. Professional soccer luminaries, Henry and Davids, will serve as coaches for the 4v4 street game in Rio. “Every Street United” will premiere in June 2014. All episodes will be available through Xbox Video for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Windows 8 (PC and Surface) and Windows Phone 8.

Bonnaroo
Xbox owners around the globe can experience the magic of the 13th annual Bonnaroo music and arts festival with a live concert destination on Xbox Live Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, 2014, brought to viewers in partnership with Superfly Presents. With the Bonnaroo app, fans can enjoy live music like never before, with a virtual experience featuring the best performances, multiple stages, biggest artists and amazing SuperJams, and explore this yearÂ’s lineup to see the best of BonnarooÂ’s past with exclusive performances. Fans can also join the conversation with fellow virtual-Bonnaroovians and get connected to their friends and the festival. Xbox is the exclusive broadcasting partner for Bonnaroo and the only location to get all of the interactive features.

“Signal to Noise”/“Atari: Game Over”
Xbox is creating a new six film documentary series, “Signal to Noise,” (working title) with two-time Academy Award winning producer Simon Chinn (“Searching for Sugar Man” and “Man on Wire”) and Emmy winning producer Jonathan Chinn (FX’s “30 Days” and PBS’s “American High”), through their multi-platform media company, Lightbox. The series will expose little known stories of how modern technology has radically altered the way we interact with our world.

The first installment, “Atari: Game Over” (working title), explores the fabled Atari mystery, dubbed “The Great Video Game Burial of 1983.” As the legend goes, the Atari Corporation, faced with overwhelmingly negative response to the E.T. video game, disposed of millions of unsold game cartridges by burying them in the small town of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Fuel Entertainment took an interest in the legend, and in December 2013, with help from local garbage contractor Joe Lewandowski, acquired the exclusive rights to excavate the Alamogordo landfill. Fuel Entertainment then brought the opportunity to Xbox Entertainment Studios. The team will head to the landfill in question to determine if the story is true, interviewing a cast of characters related to the game and its mystery along the way. “Atari: Game Over” is directed by writer/director Zak Penn (“X-Men 2,” “Avengers,” and “Incident at Loch Ness”). It will air exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in 2014.

“Humans”
“Humans” is a bold new drama co-produced with UK broadcaster Channel 4. Award-winning UK production company Kudos (“The Hour,” “Utopia,” “Broadchurch”) will produce the hour-long, eight-episode series, which will share a premiere broadcast window on the Xbox platform and Channel 4 in the UK in 2015.

Executive produced by Jane Featherstone (“Life on Mars,” “Broadchurch”) and Derek Wax (“The Hour,” “Sex Traffic”), and written by British writing team Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (“Spooks,” “Spooks: The Greater Good”), “Humans” is an English-language adaptation of Sveriges Television and Matador Film’s acclaimed Swedish series, “Real Humans.” “Humans” is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way they live, one strained suburban family purchases a refurbished synth only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences. Casting for “Humans” will begin in May 2014, and production will commence later this summer.

“Halo” digital feature
343 Industries and Scott Free Productions are creating a "Halo" digital feature to be released later this year. The project will be executive produced by Ridley Scott and Scott Free TV President, David Zucker. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan ("Battlestar Galactica," "Pillars of the Earth," "Heroes") will direct.

Projects in Development

“Deadlands”
Xbox Entertainment Studios has committed to a script based on the successful pen-and-paper role playing game created by Shane Lacy Hensley. “Deadlands” is a genre-bending alternative history of the Weird West, filled with undead gunfighters, card-slinging sorcerers, mad scientists, secret societies, and fearsome abominations.

“Extraordinary Believers”
Xbox Entertainment Studios is developing an innovative, hybrid stop-motion show dubbed “Extraordinary Believers” (working title) with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, creators of the Emmy-Award winning “Robot Chicken,” the longest running stop-motion show on television. The executive producers on the project are Seth Green, Matt Senreich, and creators/writers/executive producers are Eric Towner and John Harvatine IV.

“Fearless”
“Fearless,” (working title) is an unscripted series currently in pilot production starring Paul de Gelder, an Australian Navy bomb clearance diver and shark attack survivor who takes on an adrenaline-fueled quest to aid individuals who risk their lives to make the world a better place. “Fearless” will be produced by Australia’s International Emmy-Award winning production company, Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder (CJZ).

“Gun Machine”
Xbox Entertainment Studios acquired the rights to “Gun Machine,” a hardboiled detective thriller based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Warren Ellis. Ellis will executive produce with Brett Conrad (“The Killing,” “Sons of Anarchy,” Netflix’s upcoming “Marco Polo”) who has signed on to write the pilot script about a detective tracking a serial killer who is tied to a mysterious collection of guns used in infamous New York murders.

Untitled JASH Comedy/Variety Half Hour
In this unique comedy format developed by Xbox Entertainment Studios with JASH (a comedy collective founded by Sarah Silverman, Michael Cera, Tim and Eric and Reggie Watts), the biggest names in comedy will showcase the people that make them laugh. Each week, a different comedian will host/curate a show featuring new and unsung talent, in various video formats. Sarah Silverman will host the pilot episode and Daniel Kellison (“Late Night/Late Show with David Letterman,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Crank Yankers”) will executive produce. The series has a pilot commitment and will begin shooting in June.

“Winterworld”
Xbox Entertainment Studios and IDW Entertainment are co-developing a limited event live-action series based on Chuck Dixon and artist Jorge Zaffino’s seminal graphic novel series “Winterworld,” in which our world has been encased in ice from pole-to-pole. The surviving humans have formed tribes that war, enslave and trade with one another in an effort to survive the infinite winter. Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment, and Rick Jacobs and Dave Alpert from Circle of Confusion (“Walking Dead”) will executive produce.

At least there has been some movement on the Halo tv show as it looks like it will probably be a joint venture with Showtime

• Not gonna lie, this Destiny gameplay vid has killed my hype. That gunplay looks real bad

• As this gets closer to release, I can't but help get interested in seeing how Murdered: Soul Suspect turns out

• So Sledgehammer's first Call of Duty game is going to be about PMCs under the subtitle of Advanced Warfare. With Kevin Spacey

• So DriveClub is still coming. Out almost a year late on October 7th. From the write up, they're blaming the social features weren't up to snuff. Of course with a year, it would have been nice if they retooled the game for 60 FPS. Or at the very lease, brought Logitech and in essence Fanatec (Fanatec's driver is derivative of Logi's driver) kicking in screaming into re-upping the license so we could get a decent racing wheel on the current gen systems.

***************************************************

NEW RELEASES

There really isn't much that is actually new coming out this week, it's mostly re-releases and delayed releases.

MLB 14 The Show (PS4) - Well, it's finally here, the first baseball game for the current gen is finally out. The PS3 version got a bunch of good reviews (which should be expected as the series is pretty good). Not much else to add other the graphics are quite decent.

Bound by Flame (PC, PS3, PS4, 360) A new RPG from the people who made Mars: War Logs. Yeah....I'll pay attention to the reviews and if they're good, I'll pick it up in the PC bargain bin in a month for $5 (I got $5 worth of fun out of Risen 2 and that's my baseline).

God of War Collection (Vita) - Because some people aparently want to play the first two God of War games for what, the fourth time?

Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi (Vita) - It's a PS3 release of the otome visual novel that came out last year on the 3DS. Never understood how this series sells enough to get Aksys to release these but apparently there are enough females and gay dudes to support it. If anything else, the collector's edition of this version is far superior to the 3DS release. The 3DS version just came with a fan and this one comes with a comb, hair pin and a charm.

Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure (PC) - After a last second delay, the game is finally releasing. I can't wait. Please don't suck

4 Sounds like Fanfest was awesome again this year. Like always, they can put a great trailer together. If anything actually makes it into the game I'll be impressed. I put in Vacation for Eve Vegas now that it's dates were announced.

6 "Deadlands" could be interesting. I need to go find that "Winterworld" graphic-novel. I'm going to guess that no-one finds "winter is coming" to be funny anymore LOL@ "Mother Russia Bleeds".

7 I'm pretty sure when a company like this posts a "billion dollar loss" a lot of it is carrying losses over from previous years so they can avoid paying taxes. You don't have to pay corporate taxes on a yearly net loss. I don't think I've ever seen one of these companies post a profit yet they are still in business.

Posted by: Naes1984 at May 04, 2014 11:42 AM (YhayY)

8 Winterworld is very much worth reading.

Probably the biggest surprise (aside of the amount of stuff) for what they're working on is that the majority of the projects really need some serious capital to get them right

11 Destiny looks like they are not sure what they are trying to do with the combat as far as the appearance. On the one hand, all of the weapons seem to be analogues of weapons we have right now: revolver, shotgun, sniper rifle, LMG, assault rifle. On the other, they all seem to be "energy weapons" that shoot little bolts of light. So they seem to be trying to do a futuristic game, but making all the weapon identical (even visually, except for the paint schemes) to modern day weapons. Seems strange to me.

my main problem with the gunplay is the lack of any oomph from the guns. And the sound effects don't work either

Posted by: The Dude at May 04, 2014 11:55 AM (bStrg)

13 First and third videos both appear to be wolfenstein

Posted by: Methos at May 04, 2014 11:57 AM (hO9ad)

14 12 I agree completely. If they had gone full contemporary on the weapons (along with the visual design, except for the clownish color schemes) you could have a good weight to the sound of each gun. I can understand that you cannot really do full contemporary on the guns, but that also begs the question of why they made the look of the guns so contemporary then. The same thing you are talking about is one reasons I could never really get completely into the Halo games. Each of the guns felt a little like marzipan: light, colorful, and flimsy.

We called it "iMac Bowling": You get a bunch of first-generation iMacs in different colors (you can usually pick them up for about $5 each), and then your roll them down a hill and try to knock over empty beer bottles arranged like bowling pins. It was a game, and it involved computers. Or is that not the kind of thing you guys are talking about?

I don't know if this is GoGM's cup of tea or not, but if he/she/it would like to poke around with Sony's Landmark, (Formerly known as Everquest Next: Landmark....but too many people were confused, and kept asking where Gandalf was, and those gay elves, and mithril plated hobbits....so they changed it to just Landmark. Confused people are still asking where the hell Grue's minions are), I have an available closed beta key, (unlimited), I'd be willing to part with for the princely sum of nothing.

Night Dive Studios has filed for trademarks for the various names of the NOLF series (NOLF, NOLF 2 and Contract Jack). They have done this before with System Shock 2, which you can now buy on GOG and Steam. NOLF and NOLF 2 are some of my favorite games of all time. Hopefully we will see a digital release soon!

61 I follow Sony's operating performance for a living. The losses relate to the wind down of its unprofitable Vaio PC business. PS4 is selling ahead of expectations. Note also it has cash cow businesses such as movies, pictures and financial services to keep it afloat. It still has a lot of wealth to burn thru before it's in trouble. Nintendo is bleeding but it has reams of cash.
