The Girl Scouts May Give Up Selling Cookies, as Cookies are Contrary to Optimal Public Health Messaging

First world problems.

I don't have any problem with the Girl Scouts ending the cookie sales because I'm not quite sure why they're selling cookies in the first place. Oh sure, I know it's for fundraising, and I've had to do that for teams myself.

And I always hated it. It's a scam, isn't it? Well, the overpriced candy bars are a scam. The Girl Scout cookies are almost a deal.

Still, it's weird to have kids out there selling candy to adult stranger. Reverse this transaction and you have grounds for arrest.

But that's not why the tradition is being reconsidered, of course. It's being reconsidered because of Concern.

I've really had it up to my neck with the Concern Pageant this whole f***ing country has become.

Human beings have an intense desire to compete, and a desire to feel like they're the best at something.

I get that.

But I am sick of these loser motherf***ers who are not good at anything so they've decided that the field they'll compete on is the field of Concern.

And they'll Out-Concern everyone else. And if a challenger arises, someone who's really a Natural at Being Concerned About Bullshit, why, they'll just run Concern Windsprints until dawn and drink Concern Energy Drinks until they're better at Concern than that young upstart, too.

Can we just give these people Participation Medals? Will that satisfy their urge to compete in the Olympics of Microaggressions?

22 One time I had to sell these big Krackle bars for $1 each to raise money for an orchestra trip. I sold like 4 boxes, 60 candy bars per box. It was a good thing I had a paper route because I was able to sell a few to my subscribers and it payed for the three boxes I bought for myself.

It'll be interesting to see how they can continue to survive when they get rid of their largest source of independent revenue.

Perhaps Obama will throw them some jobs stimulus money or something. I'm sure they can 'save' jobs as well as any green energy swindle.

28 FWIW, I'm to understand that the local troops don't get a whole lot of the cookie money (dough) as it were. So it may be that they're trying to separate from that. But I honestly don't know. When I was in boy scouts we used to sell popcorn. Eventually the troop instituted a "buy out" option, and not unsurprisingly a ton of people too it. My parents had an interesting take, they always said "it's not other people's jobs to overpay for a product to fund activities we let you do." (That being said, it was good popcorn, and we'd always buy a tin, but no where near enough to avoid the buyout.) When I started making money cutting laws (and eventually at McD's) I was then responsible for my own buyout. Which was fine, I made more at McD's in a weekend than the cost of the buyout and it'd have taken me a lot longer to sell that much popcorn .

But not before. They set up some tables in front of the grocery store I frequent a couple of weeks ago. I really wanted one of the adults to say something to me about buying their cookies. 73 About a million years ago, when I was a kid, my mother was a Girl Scout Cookie Captain. During the consolidated cookie pusher season, our dining room was FILLED with GS cookies. And this was in the early '60's, when you really got a lot of thin mints in a box. What the Girl Scouts have become is kind of strange, and probably a prelude to what the Boy Scouts will probably be like in another generation. Has ANYONE come up with a good reason for all the fatties in America as opposed to say, the 1950s?  I don't think it's McDonald's.  I also think "In my day kids played outside" is too simplistic.  Do you know how many calories a kid burns in an hour of playing outside?  Probably about as many as you'd find in a cookie.

Is it all the wheat flour in everything?  Is it because we replaced fat with carbs for flavor?  I don't know.

Nutrition Science seems to be more driven by fads than by science.  How many times has the China Study been debunked, yet people still quote from it religiously.  Just recently a metastudy said fats are A-OK after decades of saying avoid all fats.

Other than that, carbs replacing fat.

My wife was a Popkorn Kernel (colonel?) one season, organizing the sales, distribution, etc. When he was later in Boy Scouts, his troop's big fundraiser for the year was selling pumpkins in October for Halloween. Fun for a while, but really a pain in the ass. The success of all these sorts of things is built on the backs of a handful of adults (parents) who work endless hours to make it work. If they can destroy the morale of the adults, then all these organizations fall apart. Don't know what that means, but I think that the State always wants to be first in the hearts of all the people.

Has ANYONE come up with a good reason for all the fatties in America as opposed to say, the 1950s? I don't think it's McDonald's. I also think "In my day kids played outside" is too simplistic. Do you know how many calories a kid burns in an hour of playing outside? Probably about as many as you'd find in a cookie.


A little from column A, a little from column B.  Kids aren't moving around nearly as much as in the past, where you could spend all day running around the neighborhood.  Combine that with the increased use of carbs to replace fats which screws with a lot of peoples' metabolisms.  I'd also add that better nutrition means that we don't see nearly the cases of malnutrition and better drugs means a lot few diseases or parasites that would have affected growth in the past.

Each one of these incidents is tragic, but for a federal authority to issue broad regulations seems a little arbitrary, since about twice as many Americans die falling out of bed each year and four times as many die falling off household furniture. And America's war with lounging devices doesn't even scratch the surface of the top causes of death. The administration predicts that the rearview camera rule will virtually wipe out the number of backover fatalities. In fact, official estimates say there will be only 13-15 deaths annually once the cameras become universal. They don't anticipate that to be reality for a few more generations of drivers, though. Phasing out cars without cameras is estimated to take until 2054 (at which point, presumably, the NHTSA will be struggling to regulate flying cars, or at least self-driving ones.) Although the report claims that forcing the hand of manufacturers and consumers won't cost much, the rule has already been delayed several times, most notably in 2012 when Transportation Department Secretary Ray LaHood voiced skepticism of the requirement and House Republicans sent a letter to President Obama noting that at an estimated $2.7 billion, it was "one of the five most expensive pending U.S. regulations."

thanks, thunderb.  I can see the Pacific from my kitchen/yard, but it's a few miles away.  Think I'm fairly prepared for The Big One should it hit here, but of course also 90% confident that most of my neighbors are NOT prepared, which pretty much cancels out all my preparedness (what?  you're going to not share your bottled water with the 83-yr old neighbor you've known since elementary school, or the cute little blonde girls and their parents next door?).

 

Wonder if the CA budget would still be in "surplus" after quakes leveled all the major cities.  With today's "accounting", it's a distinct possibility.  So there's that.

peaches, good choice with Salvation Army.  True charity, minimal overhead, dedicated people.  The real deal (not that there are not other good operations, but SA is pretty close to ideal).  Was fortunate to channel a modest amount of all y'all's money through them a few years back, overseas.  I still recall the proposal meetings - they were nice, modest, and their budgets were hilariously small for the work and impact they provided.

If animals are leaving, and I seriously doubt they are, it's because they're migrating to lower ground looking for something to eat. You see folks, the mountainous areas of Montana and Wyoming are buried under snow. Kinda hard for elk and buffalo to eat snow and survive. My guess the story originated with the loons that hang out at the Northern Entrance to the park and harass anyone one involved in bison mgmt. Yes, portion sizes have gotten bigger at home and at restaurants, both fast food and chain restaurants. Dishware has enlarged in proportion to serving sizes. Take a look at grandma's dishes..the dinner plates are the size of today's luncheon plates. Coffee cups actually used to hold a cup of coffee, now they hold two to two and a half because they are mugs, not cups. Weight Watchers points this out immediately on your first meeting and join up. They normally have portion equivalents that one can use as mental images when eating out. A serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards. An ounce of cheese is the size of the end knuckle of your thumb. The first time you sit down to a measured meal according to weight watchers, it looks like there is nothing there. After eating according to WW for a while, when you do go to a restaurant, you will immediately put half of your dinner in a to go box so that you can enjoy a normal portion and not be tempted. Bread slices are 1/3 larger than they used to be. Bun sizes at McDonalds are twice what they originally were sized. When McDonalds was first opened, the menu consisted of a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a four oz. serving of fries, and a small choc or vanilla shake. Compare that to what they serve today and what people order today, to eat while they are driving(which no one used to do). Restaurant chains portions are three to four times what a normal serving used to be. And people eat out as substitutes for eating meals at home much more today than anyone ever dreamed in the 50s. So everyone's calorie intake is much higher today, including kids(who rarely went to a restaurant until they were teenagers in the 50-60s.). Even the selection at grocery stores is three or four times what it used to be. I remember when there used to be Lorna Dunes, Oreos, Sunshine choc cookies, and Archway sugar cookies. Chips Ahoy, and possibly one or two other cookie selections. My current grocery store has one entire aisle side dedicated to cookies and crackers today.
