There is one purpose for a gun registry. One.
Good on the folks in NY who've decided to not give the state the rope with which to hang them.
Owners of assault-style weapons were supposed to have registered their guns by Tuesday.But there is no way of knowing exactly how many of these weapons there are in the state and how many were registered under the NY SAFE Act.
The state refuses to say how many were registered, claiming it is confidential information protected by the law.
Gun-rights advocates estimate compliance will be less than 10 percent.
And in Erie County, the sheriff says he will not force his deputies to enforce registration.

Former schoolteacher Marilyn Frank has big plans for firearms-safety education in town.Frank, 79, who served in the school district for 29 years and for a decade as health-education coordinator, said she doesn't own a gun but she wants to help remove polarization around the subject of gun safety. In December, she proposed bringing the National Rifle Association-sponsored program Eddie Eagle back to the local elementary schools. The program, approved by the School Committee, will start early next month.
"You want everyone to buy into this. I think this is a message that everyone can come together for, caring about the kids," she said. "That was what this is all about. Are we going to save anybody? I don't know. But when I put in birth- control explanations (in the schools), I didn't promise nobody would get pregnant. You don't know, but you just hope."
Turns out there are still a few sane people in Westford, MA after all.

Richmond is a nasty place, but it's in Contra Costa County, a big chunk that sprawls inland for a ways, and incorporates some previously rural communities that (by SF Bay Area moonbat standards) are still somewhat culturally conservative in outlook.
Just to the south of Richmond is where Alameda County starts. Home to Berserkeley and Croak-land. You do not want to be a homeowner dealing with the DA about a self-defense shooting in those locales, trust me. Especially not if the burglar was of the melanin-enhanced variety. Those are an officially protected species in those parts. Even cops involved in self-defense shootings of same sometimes get the DA breathing fire down their necks.

The Crosman .177 American Classic Variable-Pump Air pistol I bought yesterday is doing great. Only put about fifty pellets through it so far, but I'm really getting used to the feel. Glad it has a little weight to it ( 2 pounds), and I like the notch sight, haven't adjusted it to the peep sight yet. It's gross accuracy is great, I haven't tried for anything more yet. Seems to be most accurate after 6 or 7 pumps at the distances I'm shooting, 10-25 yards. I hit the pie plate ninety percent of the time, even while trying all sorts of different grips, stances, standing or sitting in a chair. 70 bucks at Gander Mountain, 10 bucks for a tin of 500 pointed pellets. This gun only uses pellets, no bb's.

A registered "assault weapon" has, in essence, already been confiscated by the state. You can't sell it, you can't give it away, you can't leave it in your will. It's no longer your property, but you are allowed by the state to be its trustee until you die, or commit some trifling technical violation of a law nobody understands, or the government alters the deal. It's just slow-motion confiscation.

Authorities are looking for the middleman who purchased the guns used in last SundayÂ’s deadly suspected hate-fueled shootings near Kansas City.
Avowed racist and anti-Semite F. Glenn Miller couldnÂ’t legally own guns because he is a felon.
Investigators believe the 73-year-old had help in obtaining the guns that he is accused of using to shoot three people outside a Jewish community center and the Village Shalom retirement home in Overland Park, the Kansas City Star said in FridayÂ’s editions.
The Star quotes a law enforcement source as saying that investigators tracing the source of the guns think they were purchased by a straw buyer. Background checks would have tripped-up Miller, but not a go-between.
The source told the newspaper local police, the FBI and agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives are looking for the straw buyer.
The source told the Star the guns were purchased from a licensed merchant. But the source declined to say if authorities knew who the merchant was or determined when they were purchased.
Miller served time in federal prison after pleading guilty in 1987 to possession of a hand grenade in a case involving a white supremacist group.
He faces charges of capital murder and first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Dr. William Lewis Corporon, his 14-year-old grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood, and Terri Lamanno. The shootings took place a day before the start of Passover. All three victims were Christians.

They are built on assumptions which are not universally applicable.
Look at the demographics of a place like Westford. It's got a per capita income of over $125,000.00 per year. It's 93% white. The schools are all absolutely top notch. Nice damn place to live.
In a place like Westford, the "Eddie Eagle" training, which tells children encountering a gun to "stop, don't touch, tell an adult" actually does have a high probability that the adult to whom the children speak will be a responsible, competent, non-criminal individual who cares about the well-being of the children and will take effectual action to secure the stray weapon.
The handful of places like Westford look less and less like the rest of America in 2014. There are vast stretches of the USA now where children are regarded by the adults around them not as deeply cared for little individuals in their own right, to be firmly guarded and lovingly reared, but instead as noisy and annoying little meal tickets, to be routinely ignored other than as incremental augmentation to government benefits.
Reflect for a moment that there is now a major problem in schools serving "underprivileged" communities where tiny children show up for their very first day of class, and teachers discover that these children DO NOT EVEN KNOW THEIR OWN NAMES, so profoundly neglected have they been by their "adult" caregivers.
Often these kids show up in a state of near starvation, because the "adults" around them have been trading the WIC handouts for alcohol and narcotics.
So tell me again how effectual a safety model "tell an adult" will be, in places where the adults are either ineffectual addicts and drunks? Or where the adults are actively inimical professional criminals who aren't going to be any too happy about a nosey little meal ticket calling attention to their (possibly felonious) ownership of a weapon?

Hey, Happy Easter everybody. For those of you in San Francisco/Oakland area, don't forget I'll be debating Stand-Your-Ground at UC Berkeley Tuesday night, 6pm, open to the public. It's me and (of course) three liberals, one of whom is on my side (she seems very nice in our email communications, but is utterly convinced Zimmerman is a bad dude. :-) ). I assume the two on the other side will present the expected archetype. :-)
Anyway, it should be fun, especially if there are protestors.
Then, Friday afternoon I'm speaking on (guess it) Stand-Your-Ground at the NRA Annual Meeting, 3:50PM. I'm sure there will be protestors there, but then I have to share them with the 65,000 other attendees. I prefer to be the focus of attention. :-)
If any of you morons are at either of those two events, be sure to introduce yourselves and shake hands, maybe we'll grab a bear.

Not only do you make a difference where you can, you make as much a difference as you can. Some education about safety is better than none.
My wife's best friend is a teacher who faces a lot of the situations you describe and her students love her, one of the reasons, is the discipline she insists upon in her class room. She might not be able to get them all into Harvard but she can help some.
The lefty phrase "if it only saves one child...." Eddie eagle 're instituted in schools would save more than one child.

The people of Lexington, Concord and surrounding towns fought back with the same weapons, and defeated them. Fourteen years later the right to do the same thing again was enshrined as the 2nd Amendment.

However, letting pot users possess firearms still puts the state in direct conflict with federal law that prohibits “shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition,” while under a controlled substance.
The federal government, which puts marijuana on the same outlawed level as heroin, is not backing off its position.
So, the useless shits in the corrupt Obamanite administration will not enforce the marijuana law and they are reducing sentences and letting convicted pot users out of jail but they damn sure will not let them possess a gun which is guaranteed by the Constitution. Meanwhile, there is not one damn line in the list of enumerated powers that allows Congress to outlaw ANY drug. Also, there is no "good and plenty" or "I won" clause either.

There are tons of squirrels and birds in the yard, hopefully none are in the wrong place at exactly the wrong time. I don't really know how to calculate/estimate fps, but the pellet went through one side of the can, through water, and out the other side, on six pumps, so that's plenty powerful to me.

National guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed on April 19th by elements of a Para-military extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw.
Speaking after the clash, Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage declared that the extremist faction, which was made up of local citizens, has links to the radical right-wing tax protest movement. Gage blamed the extremists for recent incidents of vandalism directed against internal revenue offices. The governor, who described the group's organizers as "criminals," issued an executive order authorizing the summary arrest of any individual who has interfered with the government's efforts to secure law and order. The military raid on the extremist arsenal followed wide-spread refusal by the local citizenry to turn over recently outlawed assault weapons.
Gage issued a ban on military-style assault weapons and ammunition earlier in the week. This decision followed a meeting in early this month between government and military leaders at which the governor authorized the forcible confiscation of illegal arms.
One government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed out that "none of these people would have been killed had the extremists obeyed the law and turned over their weapons voluntarily." Government troops initially succeeded in confiscating a large supply of outlawed weapons and ammunition. However, troops attempting to seize arms and ammunition in Lexington met with resistance from heavily-armed extremists who had been tipped off regarding the government's plans. During a tense standoff in Lexington's town park, National Guard Colonel Francis Smith, commander of the government operation, ordered the armed group to surrender and return to their homes. The impasse was broken by a single shot, which was reportedly fired by one of the right-wing extremists. Eight civilians were killed in the ensuing exchange.
Ironically, the local citizenry blamed government forces rather than the extremists for the civilian deaths. Before order could be restored, armed citizens from surrounding areas had descended upon the guard units.
Colonel Smith, finding his forces over matched by the armed mob, ordered a retreat.
Governor Gage has called upon citizens to support the state/national joint task force in its effort to restore law and order. The governor also demanded the surrender of those responsible for planning and leading the attack against the government troops. Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and John Hancock, who have been identified as "ringleaders" of the extremist faction, remain at large...

I like the look of the Ruger 762, but went with the SCAR 17 when it came time to lay the money down. There's not a lot of compatibility between different makes of semi 7.62/.308 like there are in the 5.56/.223 ar-15's. I know the Ruger parts can't be used in an Ar-10. Completely different gas systems.

I understand that in NY City there are two routes to owning or even purchasing a firearm. One is a vastly complicated, expensive, and degrading series of hoops, permits and applications that can be terminated or refused at any steps with forfeiture of any fees paid. The other is to have a letter written on police department letterhead by the chief of police saying that it is ok for the named individual to purchase and possess a firearm.

Homeowner's insurance, and insurance in general, almost NEVER covers acts of self-defense.
The reason is that insurance is intended to cover accidents, unintentional acts, acts of Nature, acts of God, and such.

Indeed, it is very well established law that if a defendant claims his use of force was an accident, he is denied the ability to later claim it was self-defense. And vice-versa.
Accident. Or self-defense. Pick one. Period.
If you care to take a look, I think you'll find that many of the faux "self-defense insurance" offerings out there are not, in fact, insurance. Just ask them if they're registered with your state's insurance regulatory agency--when the phone clicks, you'll have your answer.
Or ask them what their capital reserves are (the money any insurance company is required to have saved up in order to ensure they can pay out on reasonably forecastable claims). I expect they'll refuse to tell you, which a real insurance company must release as public information.
You might also want to think carefully about what you're actually paying for--that is, what do you get, and when do you get it. Generally there are three approaches these groups take.
You might also ask them how they have ANY idea what price to set on their premiums to ensure that they'll be able to pay expected claims--because I can assure you that there is ZERO data on this. It's not like your homeowner's insurance company which has many decades of data on house fires, floods, storms, etc., and can use that to make projections of likely claims, and therefore calculate what the premium needs to be. What if CA elects a new AG who adopts a policy of "every self-defense shooting goes to trial, period." They'd be bankrupted in a week--and have no money to pay YOUR claim if it comes up (hopefully never, of course).
(1) They pay your legal expenses (up to some cap) upon acquittal. This is a joke. If you're going to GET acquitted you NEED that money up front to mount your legal defense. There's a HUGE difference between a $30k defense and a $130k defense, and if you're at trial in the first place it means the facts are close enough that it's likely to mean the difference between acquittal and conviction. Also, think about this: what is in the best financial interests of the "self-defense insurance" group, that you're acquitted or that your convicted? After all, if you're convicted they don't have to pay, because it "wasn't self-defense."
(2) They provide you with legal counsel up front. This is also a joke. You have no idea who they are going to give you or what that person's competency level is generally, much less in as arcane an area as self-defense law. Any lukewarm body that has managed to pass the bar in the last 6 months could be who they toss your way. And, again, what's in their financial interests, to pay $400/hr for a Mark O'Mara to represent you (more $ now, I'm sure), or $100/hr to get some newbie who has never handled a self-defense case before? That's right. No thanks, I'll pick my own legal counsel. (Also, take a look at the lawyers on the boards of most of these groups. It's been my observation that they are heavily populated with litigation, not criminal defense, attorneys--and it's a WHOLE other ball game, with infinitely greater stakes.)
(3) They don't actually offer to pay for your legal defense, but they'll provide a relatively fixed amount of funds up front to handle the immediate crises--bail money (the 10% for a bond, I mean), and an initial retainer for legal counsel (and YOU get to pick, although they'll provide non-binding recommendations from lawyers they know to be skilled in self-defense law). Think on the order of $10,000 or so.
Personally, I'm most comfortable with this last approach. It's promises are modest enough that they're likely to actually be met, the cost is correspondingly much less than the other approaches, and I'm still in control of my legal defense.
Shorter: caveat emptor, read the fine print, use your common sense. :-)
Also, come to a seminar, we cover all this kind of stuff and lots more--e.g. what are you going to say to 911? to the responding officers? to the investigative officers? because these are all VERY different interactions.

Indeed, in most states I expect an insurance policy that would cover the intentional injury or death of another would be deemed counter to public policy. Absent an acquittal, how could the insurance company know for sure whether your act was justified?
Don't get me wrong, if you're covered for acts of self-defense, good for you. Color me skeptical.
In any case, I presume your insurance company is covering only your civil liability, not your criminal liability. It's really the criminal liability that I worry about. I can always make more money. I can't get back 20 years spend doing hard time.

I've read it and it is pretty clear. I was required to carry it because many years ago. I did stuff for NASCAR and RJR and they required a liability policy from hell.
It is NOT cheap, but surprisingly I had to use it after my son was in a wreck in WI and the insurance guys settle out for $2 mill. The guy blew .07. So the hour it took to get him to the hospital cost the insurance company $2 mill. He was screwed up.

Huh, I would expect them to right it, then just exclude anything involving the guns--that way they gets their money without the feared liability. And insurance companies love lots of money and little liability. Who wouldn't?
When you see an insurance company turn down cash it means they (or one of their peers) got burned bad enough that they're just leaving the area of coverage entirely. And that takes a lot, just look at all the risky stuff the DO cover.

At the range, I practice pistol shooting extensively one-handed, nearly exclusively, figuring that if a situation arose where I'd have to draw and fire defensively, then I would do so under extreme duress, with no time to take a proper Weaver or isosceles, no time to worry about breathing or proper grip or sight picture or anything but shooting the shit out of the evil rat bastard trying to take my life or the lives of people I care about.
Statistically, most defensive shooting incidents take place at less than eight feet. Practicing a rapid draw and point-shooting techniques seems like the prudent thing to do. As a result, I've found that some pistols are more amenable to single-handed point shooting than others. For example, the AMT Backup .45, which is my primary carry weapon in the wintertime, is an excellent single-handed point shooter. Since it only has a rudimentary groove sight, it's pretty much only a point shooter anyway. Same with my little Seecamp .32 ACP, which has no sights at all.
Anyway, I'm all about employing the fundamentals of good pistol marksmanship, but think training for a no-time, close distance scenario seems like the practical thing to do.

I can hit baseball-sized groups in center-mass of a human-sized silhouette target at 7 yards with my Seecamp. I might not hit the red at the center, but the groups are consistently tight and in places where it would give someone a bad day in real life. That's all I ask of that particular gun.
I wear a band aid on the tip of my trigger finger when I shoot that little gun. It's a wimp move, I know, but I don't like the recoil ding I get from the trigger guard when I shoot it.

I went shooting at the range at NRA HQ on Friday. I told this story to the regular daywalkers but I figured it was okay to remention it here.
Interesting crowd. Guys with NRA branded bags and hats and just one pistol. Some guys who I am pretty sure were Marines, and pretty sure not just your average joes, with a bag full of tacced out rifles.
A family of people who I am pretty sure had never shot anything before.
It's spring break so not all that surprising to see guys with their kids there. I was.

Old and battered dog tags found in a cave in the South Pacific may crack a 70-year-old mystery.
The dog tags are those of a 31-year-old Army infantryman from New York named Bernard Gavrin. He was reported missing in action during the battle of Saipan in World War II and never found.
His 81-year-old nephew David Rogers, of West Delray, Fla., said the family never knew what happened.
"I am the only living relative to have known my Uncle Bernie," Rogers told the Sun-Sentinel in the paper's Saturday editions. "Words cannot do justice to the shock this news left me with."
He was 12 when his grandmother got the tragic news that her son was MIA.
U.S. forces invaded Saipan in June 1944. The island was a fortress for 30,000 Japanese soldiers. The American troops earned victory after more than three weeks of bloody fighting.
The Sun-Sentinel reported that a group from Japan found the dog tags on Saipan last August. The Kuentai Group, which searches for Japanese soldiers lost in war, was digging in a cave when it stumbled across mass graves. The graves contained the possible remains of Gavrin and several other American soldiers. Two other dog tag sets were found in the graves.
Gavrin's dog tags had his home address and his next of kin, his father Max.
The newspaper said the groupÂ’s representatives tracked down GavrinÂ’s survivors with the help of the Bull Run Regional Library in Virginia.
The remains were turned over to the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hawaii for genetic testing.
Rogers said if his uncle is identified, there will be a military funeral at Arlington Cemetery in Washington.
"I would love to be around for the burial service," he told the Sun-Sentinel. "Time is of the essence in my old age."

Picked up my Bertta CX4 Storm and took it to the range yesterday. Fun gun to shoot. Glad I got it in 9mm and not .40. I have heard the .40s can be uncomfortable to shoot, and I can see why. The 9mm is easy peasey, and accurate as hell. I think it will be my go-to weapon when the zombies come.

Picked up my Bertta CX4 Storm and took it to the range yesterday. Fun gun to shoot.
I have one with about 800-900 rounds run through it and it's still crankin' away like a Swiss watch. Great little firearm.

Yeah.... from what I've read.... about 1/3 really wanted independence... 1/3 were Royalists... and 1/3 were just trying to keep their heads down... so went along with whatever group was in charge of that area on that day...

Just let Albany and New York City with a connecting corridor create their own state.
Low water mark on the Hudson, like the "long lasso" annexations cities used to do following the highway right-of-way. Or the way some congressional districts are gerrymandered, blob of desirable voters here, another blob over there, with nothing but highway in-between.

Well, good God, I would hope so. 900 rounds? It's barely warmed up. I've got >100,000 rounds through my carry 1911, and it still runs like a clock. Well, like a sloppy clock. (Watch the spelling, there.) But still 100% reliable.
(I picked up a brand new version of my pistol recently, and only then realized how much of the "click" and "snap" my gun had lost through hard use. :-) But all I really care about is function, so it's all good.)

I would never carry an OEM 1911 loaded with JHP for personal protection. Failure too likely.
A 1911 intended for personal protection using JHP needs to be set up by a master gunsmith. That's expensive.
My 1911 runs perfectly with JHP, but it WAS expensive.

129 Supposedly Kimber's, Para's, and Wilson's are ok for HP too. I'm using GI RR's, so for HP's I use an XD Tact

The XD Tact is almost exactly a plastic 1911 that has a bigger capacity, a rail on front, ambi mag release, and can shoot HP's.

Take it from a guy who's been around a while, QA/QC changes ALL THE TIME with EVERY ONE of these companies. What someone was 10 years ago doesn't mean they're still at that level. Not pointing any particular fingers, just cautioning. Look at recent production, AND MOST IMPORTANT upon delivery don't be blinded by the name, do a real function check, etc., before you seal the deal. If it's no good, blink away the tears and don't do the buy. Period.

Yeah, thanks Andrew. Bought your book and ended up pacing off distances from my front and back doors to compare them to the Tueller drill. Documented what I did in the book. Good stuff.

Funny/disheartening story from the new guy:
Recently purchased a Browning Buckmark for use in the Bullseye League that's held every Thursday night at my local range. When I picked it up, I was told to try different kinds of ammo in it to figure out what it liked and didn't like. I did so, and found that all of the ammo I had on hand was well-liked by the pistol. (I had read online that it wasn't a picky pistol to begin with).
Anyway, the previous league meeting, I had won a box of ammo for hitting the 10-ring at 25 yards. The ammo ended up being 38 grain American Eagle hollowpoints. Decided to be cheap and use it for the match. Loaded 10 and got ready for the slow-fire round. Once the round began, fired once, it jammed. Cleared the jam, made sure everything was fine, took aim and fired again. This time, the spent casing stuck itself rather firmly in the barrel. I eventually got it out with my knife, but lost so much time that I only got 9 shots in (out of the 10 allowed) before time ran out.
Personally, I'm just glad the pistol is fine and that I managed a halfway decent score despite the circumstances.

Just about every accidental shooting by kids happens the same way. Some kid picks up a semi-auto pistol, knowing enough not to pull the trigger, but still fiddling around with it until he manages to push the magazine release. He picks up the magazine, sees the cartridges in it, thinks he has unloaded the gun, and can't help pointing it at his friends to make them piss their pants. That was fun, so why not make them crap their pants by pulling the trigger. BANG. Dead kid. All because anti-gun parents refuse to show their kids how guns actually work. I grill my boy regularly on the basic rules of gun safety, including a few special "rules for kids," including: "If you drop the magazine from a pistol, is the gun unloaded?" He knows the answer to that one real well.
