NPR: "A Handful of Southern Democrats" Joined Republicans to Block Controversial Civil Rights Appointee
— Ace

Feast your eyes on all this Southern-ness.

When they're not busy making up false claims of Republican "dog whistles," they're eagerly crafting their own.

Update: Per a commenter at Jonah Goldberg's original post, NPR has now edited this clip so that they say "Democrats" instead of "Southern Democrats.

1 Brain dead simple prescription for saving America:

1) Move tax day to election day.  The people who object to that
are objecting precisely because they want to steal our money.

2) Print a family budget analog to the federal budget on every
IRS form.

How to get it passed:

a) A cadre of conservative House Reps should announce that until
this change is made, they absolve their constituents from following
federal tax law, because of the unconstitutional executive orders
that have modified the Obamacare tax.

b) The Reps should make speeches on the House floor urging tax
revolt.

c) The Reps should "Hire" all their constituents as part of their staff
for 1 penny per year to give them immunity.

122 "a handful of southern democrats"

This is starting to become scary. A bald faced lie, you can dismiss until everything is a lie.

When you start to suspect they really believe what they are saying, it's delusion.
We are being governed by insanely delusional, insanely dishonest politicians, and we (the voters) are not doing anything about it.

Eventually the simple instinct for self preservation has to kick in, and you decline to ride with the obviously incapacitated driver.

127 Violent crime has gone up 15% in both the past two years. I'm guessing as America dismantles all the "tough on crime" laws passed in the 90s -- the ones that brought the violent crime rate down to a record low --we'll probably see some predictable results This is predictable. Crime hit a record high in the late 80s/early 90s -- voters demanded we lock up the violent criminals. Crime falls for 2 decades straight -- and now the narrative is, oh look how mean it is to lock up the violent criminals. So we start letting them out, closing down prisons, etc, etc -- and crime almost immediately starts going up.

To me NPR is actually a key building block in the impervious house of delusion inhabited by your stereotypical urban/coastal liberal.  It makes them feel "smart", its tones and feel and flavor is culturally exactly what these people have been accustomed to considering "sophisticated .... educated ...." etc.  I have many acquaintances (even family) who sort of rank in the "B-C" student category of life, and are quite innocent about public policy on any serious level, but boy do they feel smarter with NPR as their guide to "correct, smart" views of the world.

I believe NPR's influence - baleful influence - is outsized.  Was shocked when doing some golf trips to the upper South out of the Beltway a few years back that the only "news" on the radio was usually NPR.   Shocked, and depressed.  There *is* really no news in the US, not any more.  It's been pretty bad for a long long time, but it has become materially, catastrophically worse in the last 15 years.

The response "Racist." And since said family member looks like a photograph negative of me, people assume they have authority on such issues of bias. Pffffttt. National Palestinian Radio

National Pacifist Radio

I have been on NPR air just twice.  Once was sort of apolitical international-ish semi-narrow technical stuff about a foreign country's aerospace industry.  The other was a full half-hour on the local live interview show.  The second was quite illustrative.  The show is normally a call-in show.  The host, after a few minutes, got a very concerned look on his face, and signaled his producer that there would be no calls.

I am 100% certain it was because he was terrified what I would do to his typical callers, who no doubt were sputtering with outrage and disbelief at what they were hearing (a very straightforward, factual, direct-experience account and explanation of one of the major ongoing elements in one of our two wars following 9/11).

It's all there - the delusional framework, the (baseless) moral and intellectual certitude, the inability to deal with contrary (i.e. real) information or analysis.

Since we're talking things Southern, I'll repeat my favorite Gone With the Wind story:

The author, Margaret Mitchell, was an honored guest at the film's premiere in Atlanta, seated next to Gable.  When she saw the  train station sequence, with hundreds of wounded extras stretching to the horizon and filling the frame, she turned to him and whispered, "Mah Gawd, if we'd-a had as many soldiers as that, we'd-a won the wah!"

Here's the scene:

214 NPR's business model involves subsidies at the federal, state, and local level. Many/Most NPR stations are run out of universities. The operating costs are paid for by the university (student tuitions and fees). Typical it is run and staffed by student volunteers as well. The station pays no rent. The NPR stations also typically have just been granted prime spectrum on the radio dial (it's always in that 88.5-99.1 range -- very convenient). And they also are typically granted free license to broadcast at extremely high power levels -- meaning huge range to maximizing listeners. NPR sells their programming to the stations. Each station pays NPR a large fee for the right to broadcast NPR content. That fee is paid by the university. Also the huge electricity costs are paid for by the university. Any shortfall is paid by listener donations.

I read an article once about a restaurant near Atlanta that went through ~80 gallons of iced tea per week, 80% of which was sweet iced tea. The article also mentioned the restaurant used 50-60 pounds of sugar per week for the sweet tea. I did a little math and figured out the appropriate ratio was about a pound of sugar per gallon of sweet tea, and made it accordingly.

And for all of you northerners, there's a reason why you get a disgusted look on your face if you offer someone who wants sweet iced tea a glass of regular iced tea and a bowl of sugar. Properly made sweet tea is supersaturated by adding and dissolving the sugar while the tea is hot. You can never dissolve the proper amount of sugar into the tea after it has been chilled.

262 non-purist, actually Neptune's Inferno has a couple interesting omissions that puzzle me.

On D Day of Operation Watchtower, he mentions the transport Elliot getting hit and having to be sunk.  But he omits any mention of the destroyer USS Jarvis, which was assigned as an escort for the transports, which was hit in the same air attack by a torpedo.  The ship is not even listed in the Index.

Then later in August Admiral Turner dispatched USS Blue and USS Henley to disrupt the Tokyo Express.  Again Hornfischer does not mention this battle or the loss of USS Blue to a Japanese torpedo.

So the book, while valuable, has issues.

274 I'm just stunned at how many people have a working knowledge of the Rural Southern Indiana Redneck culture. It really is a unique place.

275 108 Adegbile defended a black man, and we don't like
black people; that's the only reason it'd be controversial around here.
Yep, we're just a bunch of old southerners up here in NH. We're
basically Mississippi c.1843.

MP4 says you are now a "Southern Belle".

While we can't all be lucky enough to be born Southern Belle's, I hereby nominatify you all as Southern by the grace of my proclamation today.

Proclamation of Dame Christy, Queen, Sixth of March 2014 Eleventy

Note: Yankee Long Island husband, with last name no Southerner could initially pronounce much less spell, considers himself "Southern by the grace of God"(and me). We moved to Floriduh to be closer to my family in Mississippi when the boys were small. Husband now eats grits more than I do and says he is "fixin'" to do stuff. Good man I captured across enemy lines. I have trained him well.

276 They can paint it how they want, but this has more to do with public employees unions. Who wants to be on the s-list of the Fraternal Order of Police during an election year?

277 The commenters on the pjmedia article noted that the podcast audio too had been changed from "Southern" to "Senate Democrats". Seriously, how ethical is that to alter an audio recording without noting the correction. These libs at NPR are spineless.

278 Yuo should check out the comments on Sen. Toomey's Facebook page. 90 percent are from folks thanking him for leading the effort against Adigbile, 10 percent are from raving lunatic leftists (BIRM) blaming the Koch Brothers and Fox News for the defeat. It's simply amazing.

279 By saying "blocked" I think they want people to infer the nomination wasn't voted on but kept from being voted on. The democrats didn't let GHWB nominee for the EEOC who happened to be black even out of Senate committee even though he had enough votes in the democrat controlled Senate to be confirmed. The media's reaction was silence!

280 241 NPR says "A handful of *Senate* Democrats..." Not "Southern." I had already posted a snarky comment over there before the error was pointed out. Either they re-recorded the opening, or NRO and the rest of us didn't hear it correctly. It was still an awful, race-baiting report for other reasons. Why would they specify "senate democrats"? I think that's a nifty trick in the hopes people will think that's what happened. Why would they specify the senate when NPR wouldn't fathom their listeners not knowing that presidential appointments are confirmed by the senate?
