Senator Mark Pryor (D-ObamaCare): People In Arkansas Like It When We Attack People's Military Service, Right?

Senator Mark Pryor of Arkansas is trailing his GOP opponent Congressman Tom Cotton and seems to think the key to a comeback is saying Cotton feels "entitled" to a Senate seat because he served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pryor made the comment in a profile on MSNBC. If you watch, he doesn't really bring Cotton's service up, the reporter does. It's a perfectly normal DC conversation...real success is passing bills, while military service is something we say nice things about but isn't really of any practical value. This is the danger red-state Democrats run into. Back home they need to pretend to be gun lovin', liberal hating, regular folk. But when they are in DC, they are very much part of the Pelosi-Reid, DC liberal establishment.

It's a good plan (and one conservatives need to find a way to work in reverse) right up until you forget which part you're supposed to be playing.

Laughing at someone's military service is a This Town thing Mark, it's unlikely to play well back home.

Pryor's worlds collided on MSNBC and he's going to spend a lot of time fruitlessly trying to put them back together.

Congratulations to soon to be Senator Tom Cotton.

The collapse of respect for military service among wide swathes of society (see Paul Ryan's recent budget idea) is pretty shocking, though I guess not really when all the other degradation is taken into account. But as most people, including "conservatives", are pretty much unserious about national security anyway (whine like little girls if a conflict isn't short and nearly cost-free), the bigger issue is why would someone bother to don the uniform.

Pryor's father was a very nice guy personally, far as I could tell from lots of direct exposure. He wrote me a very nice and funny note when I left the Hill, as I'd sort of been his "shadow" foreign policy guy, helping out his very nice assistant and friend of mine, especially on the Senate floor. I get the feeling the son is a product of the Beltway. World of difference.

Sometimes it takes heroes to defeat bills that spell D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R. ...and it isn't just Democrats promoting more laws as "proof" of a politician's validity for the times. I remember the 'acid reflux for all' Mitt Romney supporters' rancor against Fred Thompson for POTUS because teh Fred didn't "achieve" a long string of bills that were passed into law. What he did implement was the bill that requires government employees to be competent with skills/training intact, and judged on job performance of job description. That trumps MittCare Hands Down.
