Supreme Court Strikes Down Aggregate Campaign Contribution Limits
— DrewM

Old and busted lefty talking point: Citizen's United ruined America.

New hawtness: McCutcheon ruined America.

The Supreme Court struck down limits Wednesday in federal law on the overall campaign contributions the biggest individual donors may make to candidates, political parties and political action committees.

The justices said in a 5-4 vote that Americans have a right to give the legal maximum to candidates for Congress and president, as well as to parties and PACs, without worrying that they will violate the law when they bump up against a limit on all contributions, set at $123,200 for 2013 and 2014. That includes a separate $48,600 cap on contributions to candidates.

The $2,600 limit on donations to a single candidate wasn't touched by this decision but you have to think when a case challenging that comes up they will be struck down as well.

Basically what this means is that before today one Koch brother could basically donate $2,600 to 47 candidates ($2,600 x 47= $122,200). Now he can donate $2,600 to 535 candidates (435 in the House and 100 in the Senate).

This will make Harry Reid's head explode because he will ignore (publicly anyway) that Democrat mega-donors can do that same thing.

Personally, I agree with the notion that campaign contributions are speech and speech can't be regulated so I like this decision. I'd like it even more if I were a campaign consultant because a lot of money is going to be flowing into campaigns across the country.

30 As I recall, the original campaign contribution limits were passed because the leftists were pissed that a fellow donated $1 million to Nixon.

It's not the money in politics that corrupts--it's the power.

There should be no limits on individuals or groups donating money to anyone for anything.

Much like speech, the solution to money you disagree with is not to restrict donations, but more donations.

It takes a special level of stupid, e.g. a leftist, to contort your thoughts into the pretzel that money is not speech.

48 Good news for free speech. As a side note, there is a mistake in the following portion of the write-up: "Basically what this means is that before today one Koch brother could basically donate $2,600 to 47 candidates ($2,600 x 47= $122,200). Now he can donate $2,600 to 535 candidates (435 in the House and 100 in the Senate)." The limit on contributions to candidates was $48,600, so you could only contribute $2,600 to 18 candidates (or nine candidates, if you contributed the max of $2,600 for both the primary and the general election). Now, you could give the max of $5,200 ($2,600 for both primary and general) to all 535 candidates for federal legislative office, for a total of $2,782,000.

76 Nice little bit of news after another great night of elections here in SE Wisconsin.

Milwaukee County Board was voted a major pay cut in line with their now part time job - 71% were for the cut in Milwaukee County, gives you an idea of how badly the Milwaukee County Board is that it crosses party lines.

City of Waukesha new conservative mayor getting rid of the Republican mayor who had gotten quoted calling Walker an extremist.

Couple of other towns (Franklin, South Milwaukee) got with the program and put in fiscally conservative leadership.

But maybe the biggest was the school board elections in the formally solid union city of Kenosha. Kenosha school board had ignored ACT 10 previously and gave the teacher unions a plum contract while the injunction was in place. Two pro ACT 10 people running for the open seats on the board which would have turned it over in favor of ACT 10. WI unions spent a crapload ($24,000) in advertising, walking door to door and holding rallies over the weekend to "Send a message to the Koch Brothers" (yes they linked a school board election in Kenosha to Koch).

Results?  Both pro ACT 10 won the seats and now Kenosha will be joining the fight against the teacher unions.

On Wisconsin.

98 Great news for freedom; but this case shows the extraordinarily importance of presidential elections. 5 votes for freedom; 4 votes for "let's do what we think is right, damn the Constitution." And the 5 don't march in lockstep (Kennedy, Roberts mostly); while 4 the rarely stray from toeing the liberal line. The problem is that the Dems nominate ACLU 100%ers who won't ever stray on an important issue. And there is very little push-back from teh R's in the Senate (Ruth Bader Ginsburg anyone?) When a moderate Republican is in the WH (and even a conservative like Reagan), the media immediately starts chirping on "no litmus tests" (ever hear that when a Dem is in the WH?). And so our side ends up appointing a squish like Souter and moderates like Kennedy and O'Connor. The rule of law would look significantly different today with conservatives in those roles.

But at the 50,000 feet level, they're the same things: groups of individuals banded together for a particular purpose. There's no reason we should say "Bad corporation, you can't try and influence elections" and then turn around and say "Good Union, spend some more money."

Makes me think a la carte programming is inevitable.

Heck, between Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu, we are darned close anyway.

Note that Amazon is bankrolling several "TV" pilots to turn into series; becoming a content producer in addition to a provider.

I've watched one of them and it was quite good--as good, if not better than the current fare.

I don't expect my allies to be in lockstep agreement with me 100%. I agree with her on most issues. And Malkin has more effectively pushed the ideas I care about than almost anyone else. She also occasionally goes off on stupid tangents. But so do almost all prominent right-wing pundits and politicians. That's why we don't have border security. It's why we don't have a balanced budget. It's why the government grows bigger and bigger and bigger.

154 >>I'd like it even more if I were a campaign consultant because a lot of money is going to be flowing into campaigns across the country. Yup. I gotta say it shocked the ever-loving shit out of me when I discovered political fundraisers work on a commission. That is verboten in charitable fundraising and for a very good reason. The donations being solicited should not have any direct impact on the solicitor's pocket. It is terribly corrupting to have a fundraiser work on commission. There is far too much temptation for campaigns to cast every bit of information in a light that leads potential donors to believe that "their gift will make the difference." We saw very clearly in the last cycle overly optimistic reports of polls and GOTV that I have come to believe should have always been suspect to a disinterested professional observer. It is very unlikely that I will ever donate to a political campaign again. Between the corruption in the consulting system and the risk incurred when one's donations are made public by assholes like the anti-Prop8 crowd, the risk is to high. Toss in a corrupt IRS, which I personally know attacked large donors to Romney's campaign last time, and why should I give? Great job, Ruling Class!

Not publically traded corporations.  Most are organized as non-profits, but they are corporations under tax laws and for legal purposes.  Don't have such a limited view about what constitutes a "corporation" - there are a lot of different forms for incorporating.

179 Yeah, the upper-middle class and professional class (ie the money) in America have been trending Left for a while now. Over the past several decades the Republicans and Democrats have been trading white people. Dems used to be downscale whites and Repubs upscale whites. That has largely reversed. Shift isn't complete. And the true elite -- the 1% or .1% skew overwhelmingly left-wing. Yeah, if we are in a billionaire race then we are gonna lose. The Left has a lot more billionaires than the Right.

192 You can't fucking tell people what they can or can not do with their own fucking money! This becomes clearer when you substitute the word "work" for the word "money" which we should start doing. This is why debasing the language is dangerous. "Money" does, indeed, mean "a means of conveying value" as in coin and paper tender of various types. However, we now use the word "money" when we should be using the words "work" or "capital." And those two words completely lay bare many of the left's arguments.

200 It sickens me that 4 of our Supreme Court justices went the other way on this case.  The idea that the 1st Amendment has some sort of arbitrary limit on how many candidates you can support in an election cycle is an absurdity.

The biggest reason why I can never threaten to sit out elections even if I don't like the Republican Presidential candidate is the Supreme Court.  Even RINO Presidents usually try and appoint conservative justices (George HW Bush and Clarence Thomas for example)

The problem is, sometimes they devolve once they get that lifetime appointment.  I'd still rather take that gamble than whatever left-wing Justice a Democrat Presidential candidate will always appoint.

So much of our nation's direction unfortunately comes from the Supreme Court.

Yeah that's not the way to defend the movie.  The way to defend the movie is to use what it actually is.  Its not really a good defense though.  The movie Starship Troopers was not based on the book Starship Troopers.  The script was not written with the book in mind.  The connections to the book were added after licensing the name and to tie it to the book.

212 ec - Note that the list's Dem/Rep tilt is a little misleading. For instance, it indicates that the NEA's contributions are neutral. That is because the list composer used a criteria of 60%+ as an indicator of a significant tilt. Which is fair, except that in many cases, like the NEA, less than 60% of donations went to the Dems (56% in that case), but contributions to Reps were only 4%. So, that list could use some revision as far as 'tilt' goes. Note also, that the heinous Koch Bros., are down at #59. And yet, and yet...., when we here of money influencing politics, we hear nothing, nothing about all of the Left/Liberal organizations above them.

256 248 A "Top Gun" sequel? Really? Thirty years after the original? Uh, yeah. Sure. It'll be a real hit, I'm sure. Are they going to bring back Val Kilmer as the Ice Man? 266 My guess is Michelle Malkin is just trying to highlight anti-Asian racism on the left more than anything. its one of those open secrets, the one minority group you can mock openly is Asians because they are too comfortable in the American Way and too self-sufficient. Nothing annoys a leftist more than an identity group that doesn't want their help.

267 Great piece over at pjmedia Republicans Catch on that Negative Advertising Works ... Early spending by outside groups on attack ads has put Democratic incumbents on the defensive. The Godfather of the anti-Koch campaign has been Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who now seems to have some serious ethical problems of his own to deal with. In any case, legal campaign spending is hardly un-American, and there is no evidence that Americans for Prosperity or the Koch Brothers have broken any laws. What they have done is change the script- spending early to put Democrats on defense. If you are a progressive, or merely a Democratic party operative and major campaign contributor (public employee union leader, trial lawyer, victims group advocate), what is really un-American is that Republicans seem to be winning at the moment. Big campaign spending by wealthy people is certainly not confined to Republicans, and Democrats have plenty of big spending individuals and groups behind their candidates, from George Soros, to Jeffrey Katzenberg to what might be the biggest of all — Tom Steyer. Since Bill Clinton’s first Presidential campaign in 1992, Democrats have generally equaled or exceeded the campaign spending by their opponents. ... read the whole thing it's delicious http://tinyurl.com/l75w86d This is why Harry is so angry.

281 No, Malkin is just enjoying playing the aggrieved victim and throwing around the Race Card. Many on the Right do it when they think they have a chance to use such a powerful weapon. It rarely works, though. She thought she had a trump card. She didn't. If she was a Lefty and Limbaugh made the same joke Colbert did, it would probably work. She'd be able to pull a Fluke and purposefully misunderstand a satirical joke and the media would go along and pretend to not get the joke as well. But she isn't, so they won't.

309 OT, but I'm super irritated right now.  I applied for a   position in my current Bureau that is, essentially, EXACTLY what I'm currently doing in my (lower grade, lower paying) position.   My supervisor WANTS me to get this new position, because, as I said, it's exactly what I'm doing now, but which I'm not getting paid     for doing.   My resume    is overflowing with all the reasons I am qualified to do thsi position, including level of education and how many years    of experience I have doing the things I'm currently doing that I would continue to do in this new position.

I get the message back from HR:  I'm not qualified and my application has been denied.

SO.  Now my boss    has decided to say, "Fuck it," and   try to get my current position upgraded.   So I've got to list out    all of my current job duties and compare them to the job duties outlined on my   current job description, so that frigging HR can look at it and go, "Oh, yeah, I guess she is qualified."       Or, you know,   what they could have    figured out if they'd just read my damned resume.

*breathing through nose*

As it is, I highly doubt this upgrade is going to happen.   Because   fuck state gubmint bureaucracy.

334 I get the message back from HR: I'm not qualified and my application has been denied. ... Now my boss has decided to say, "Fuck it," and try to get my current position upgraded. ... As it is, I highly doubt this upgrade is going to happen. Because fuck state gubmint bureaucracy. Better hope they don't decide that you're unqualified for your current position and send you packing...
