Judgment at Nuremburg and A Star Is Born, both of which she was nominated for an Oscar.  And though they weren't what we think of as "hits," the movies she made with Mickey Rooney were very finanically successful for MGM.

As far as whether Mayer was "right" - with Durbin, he would have had an actress who was without any personal problems or illicit habits, but one who was very strong-willed.  Mayer was able to mold Garland, which I don't think he could have with Durbin.  It's hard to judge, since the two were such dramatically different personalities, but I think on the whole, Durbin might have been the better choice.

Go figure. Then of course, we have the new Census move that totally changes the way the CB conducts their healthcare survey, by changing the criteria used to count someone as insured. This will make all previous results noncomparable. Convenient, no? Especially with OCare in its first year of real implementation.

63 A hymn story for my brother in Christ and anyone else who might be interested, on "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" which I believed Mike remarked a few days ago was his favorite hymn. Maybe he knows this story, but I just learned it: God chooses whom God chooses –– usually a less than obvious candidate. He chose Moses, who had no gift for public speaking, to tell Pharaoh, "Let my people go!" He chose David, a mere boy, to deliver his people from the giant, Goliath. And he chose Robert Robinson to write this hymn, "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" –– a hymn that has blessed people for more than two centuries. Robinson was an unlikely candidate for ministry. As a teenager, he was a member of a street gang. One night they plied a fortuneteller with alcohol in the hope of getting their fortunes told for free –– hardly an auspicious occasion for the work of the Holy Spirit. But the fortuneteller told Robinson, "You will live to see your children and your grandchildren" –– and that comment made Robinson decide to clean up his act. Inviting his gang to mock Methodists, Robinson persuaded them to visit a revival meeting being conducted by the great evangelist, George Whitfield. Whitfield preached on the text, "O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" and convinced Robinson that he was speaking to him personally. It took three more years, but Robinson became a Christian. Robinson never got the proper education expected of a minister, but he became one nevertheless ––a minister so competent that he attracted learned people to his congregation in the great university town of Cambridge, England. To my knowledge, Robinson wrote only two hymns, and "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" is the only one that remains popular today. But it is popular indeed, being found in practically every hymnbook. It is a hymn of praise to God for the blessings that he has bestowed on us –– and a prayer that God will seal our hearts "for Thy courts above!" The original version of the hymn uses the word "Ebenezer," a word unfamiliar to most people. It refers to a place where Samuel erected a stone memorial to honor victory over the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:12). The wording has been changed in many modern hymnals. Richard Niell Donovan

Honest answer is, it's used in treatment for people with PTSD, alcohol abuse, etc.

The theory is, if you understand your triggers, the things that cause you to react, and do things you otherwise don't want to do, you can learn  avoid them.  Or not let them trigger you.

I think it's a valid concept for conditions like PTSD, but it should be very temporary.  The extent to which   it is not temporary  would be the  scope of one's illness.

As  for alcoholics, yeah, I  think it's more of an excuse.  My wife  called me a good-for-nothing bum, so I went out and got drunk.  Dude, this is one of those chicken and egg things,  and you may be on the wrong side of the yolk.

You're getting close to the truth here.

Everything every political hack -- actual elected "servant of the people" or self-appointed "expert" teat-sucker like Beckel, Rove, Teh Noot, etc. -- does is for agenda-enhancement. Doesn't matter which party they claim to belong to.

And the agenda is exactly the same: keep power concentrated among those who currently wield it.

Nothing else matters to the gold-plated welfare cases of D.C. Any apparent differences in ideology serve only to distract the peons while the royalty rake it in.

It has to be a compelling scenario. Look at pathetic hacks like Scott Brown, wandering from here to there begging to be allowed into The Inner Circle.

102 #97 The states approving this measure agree to vote in the electoral college for the candidate who gets the popular vote rather than who won their state. They are tallying up the electoral college votes for each approving state a,d it 'goes into effect' when they hit 270. Thus not every state has to join in. This is really scary.

I would think there are a large number of big city occupants of so-called "swing states" who see themselves as being disenfranchised  by  the down-state  yokels who sometime manage to cancel out their votes.

This way they could  be free of the yokels, and proudly vote for the next lesbian conjoined twin performance artist  who wins the Dem nomination, and feel like they're part of history,  rather than sideline spectators  to it.

I think I stuck my neck out enough. If you get into politics, you might as well put a gun to my head. You really put your neck out when you get political. I appreciate the fact that Keith [Colburn, captain of the Wizard] has always been political. We have spokespersons for our industry, and I was the head of the board for the Alaska Crab Coalition. It takes a lot of work; it takes everything out of you. And now with this TV thing always on my heels, you don't even have time to sneeze anymore. But Keith did a great job when he spoke for us, and it's right down his alley. For me personally, I'd rather just stay out of politics.

One of the big trigger words for Curly in one of their shorts was "Cheese". I believe he was a boxer and thats how they got him to cut loose.

As I stated in my State of the City Address earlier this month, the Houston I know does not discriminate, treats everyone equally and allows full participation by everyone in civic and business life,” Parker said. “We don’t care where you come from, the color of your skin, your age, gender, what physical limitations you may have or who you choose to love. It’s time the laws on our books reflect this.

In other tolerance news:

The Twilight Room Annex will close for good tonight, owner Chris Penner said, after his bank accounts were seized in connection with an Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries judgment.

The bureau ordered Penner last August to pay $400,000 to a group of transgender and crossdressing people whom Penner asked not to return to his bar. Penner appealed the bureauÂ’s judgment, but the Oregon Court of Appeals has not yet reviewed his case.

The case centers around a voicemail Penner left in 2012 for a member of the Rose City T-Girls. The group had frequented the North Lombard Street bar every Friday night for two years. They brought anywhere from a dozen to 40 people -- some who crossdress, others who have fully transitioned to female -- into the cavernous club each week. But their presence drove other customers away, Penner said.

The bureau's civil rights division began investigating The Twilight Room Annex, formerly known as The P Club, in 2012. The penalty was the first imposed under the 2007 Oregon Equality Act.

208 Portland has no grasp of reality on the reservoir case.

A kid takes a whiz through a fence and they don't know if he actually dribbled it in.

Drain 38 million gallons just because I feel my customers might not like that oh 1 part per 1 trillion...

Lets ignore the cost of treating another 38 million gallons because Portland is not like the arid Southwest or the fact that Portland's wildlife is already using the reservoir as a waste dump.

*pauses*  Has anyone asked Portland for the environmental impact downstream of them releasing so much water in such a short time span?  Would this release oh trigger any flash floods or mudslides?

When I was a kid, we lived on a 100 year old farm with, of course, no city water.  We had a well and had a "water man" bring a load of water every 1-2 weeks.  One day when water was very low, the water man came and lifted the lid off the well and there was a dead rat floating on the water that was left.  Mind you, I was all of about 14 and was so thoroughly grossed out that I had been drinking, brushing my teeth and bathing in water that had washed over a dead rat's body.  I'm still dealing with the trauma.

She'd probably enjoy most of it and have a bit go over her head, I guess. But another favorite, The Young Philadelphians is very expensive on Amazon. Unless I want a used VHS tape... Maybe TCM will play it some time??

The Florentines had an open-air movie week, and on 7/7 they had a double-feature of The Seven Samurai and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, dubbed in Italian, natch. Back in my touring-Europe-while-a-student days I saw the revival with Virginia McKenna (Joy Adamson in Born Free) in London, and went backstage to get autographs. Virginia McKenna was truly gracious about it; Yul Brynner was not. He sat in the back of his limo with his much younger wife with the window rolled down two inches. His handler was outside the limo and would hand in the programs (and he would only sign the theater program) for his autograph. Kinda soured me on the whole celebrity thing.

Right because if there is one thing the current GOP coalition has shown it's the ability to keep normalcy and not allow the lunatic left free reign...

look I get it, I am to shut the fuck up hand over 1500-15,000 bucks depending on what Kool Rove and the Gang think my tithe should be and MAYBE if I am REALLY lucky they can be assed to uh what exactly?

I mean seriously what the fuck good has the GOP been in the last ten years?

"Not Democrat" is not enough because while the GOP was busy telling everything to the right of Juan McQueeg to go fuck itself the left was building a bomb....

I can't be bothered to be bothered to aid politicians who aren't bothered by SCOAMFCare or Amigo Grande!

341 Kreplach, advocacy groups are pushing the changes.  As one puts it, to change the pardon system from "No" to "Maybe"

I would really like to ask them how they would feel if one of their "Maybe" releases went on a killing spree like that pair who did a home burglary, took the married couple and their two daughters captive, brutalized them, killed them, and burnt the house down.  You know the two who had met in a halfway house.

But I am sure in their self assurance they are doing right and patting themselves on the back they will say the system will still prevent such form happening.

358 When the embattled Kathleen Sebelius announced her intention to resign as secretary of Health and Human Services, she pledged to stay in President Barack ObamaÂ’s cabinet until her replacement was confirmed by the Senate. Turns out, there may be a financial incentive for the former Kansas governor to take her time getting out of Washington. Next week, Sebelius becomes eligible to receive a government pension and continue certain taxpayer-funded health-care benefits when she hits her five-year employment mark with the federal government, Office of Personnel Management (OPM) policy indicates. Under OPM rules, Sebelius, who was sworn into office on April 28, 2009, would be eligible to receive these benefits after completing five years of continuous service in the federal government. While she announced her resignation on April 11, Sebelius does not mark her five-year anniversary with the federal government until April 28. Her successor is not expected to be sworn in until after that date. The Senate, which is on recess, comes back into session the same day Sebelius hits the five year mark. So only five years for serving in a dysfunctional broken Gov and you get a pensions and bennies, but get shot at and you need 20? Yeah Yeah sure sounds fair to me?????
