— Ace One rat deserts the bigger rat.
As Slublog recalls, Duke's President jumped ugly on this story, too. He can't escape his own culpability by turning on partner-in-crime Nifong.
Allah's added video of the boys' lawyers' press conference, which isn't working at the moment, but should work eventually.

“This unfortunately reminds me of when Hitler began rounding up the Jews for no reason and locking them up,” Democratic Party activist Carla Vela said. “Now they’re coming for the Latinos, who will they come for next?”

A Palestinian girl runs for cover as gunmen from Hamas
take position during a gunbattle between Hamas and Fatah
militants in the West Bank city of Nablus...
Don't worry -- there were no Jews involved in this Hamas-Fatah firefight amidst children, so it's not news you have to concern yourselves about.

— Ace Wright declared he was innocent of the charges, and that, furthermore, he wanted to know if you were travelling at the speed of light and turned on the lights, would anything happen?
The first man arrested, Ted Stephens -- the guy with the creepy photo of eyes painted on his eyelids -- isn't even mentioned here. I suppose that means he's innocent of everything except having sex with a lot of prostitutes, which isn't even a crime.
Well, it shouldn't be a crime, anyway.
he Crown Prosecution Service's senior prosecutor Michael Crimp said a team of CPS lawyers had been in close contact with detectives since the arrests were made earlier this week."As this case has developed, we have been carefully examining and assessing the evidence," he said.
"This evening we have made the decision that there is sufficient evidence and authorised that Steven Wright... should be charged with murder."
He reminded journalists about the need for care in reporting events surrounding the case, adding: "Steven Wright stands accused of these offences and has a right to a fair trial."

He does look like a serial killer. But I always say that. So I guess I have to say that 90% of the population looks like a serial killer, or at least a programming language inventor.

— Ace Wait, I'm confused. I've been endlessly assured that Al Qaeda benefits from out presence in Iraq -- "the greatest recruitment tool bin Ladin ever had," etc. -- so I'm baffled why they'd want to end that gravy-train.
THE head of an al-Qaeda-dominated group in Iraq offered to give US troops a month to pull out free of attack in an audiotape posted on the internet overnight and demanded an answer within two weeks....
"We are offering you the opportunity to withdraw your troops in complete safety and we are expecting your response within two weeks,'' said the voice purporting to be that of Baghdadi, leader of a self-proclaimed Islamic emirate in western and north-central Iraq that is dominated by al-Qaeda supporters.
"We appeal to President George W. Bush to seize this historic opportunity which should allow your troops to pull out in safety,'' it said.
Bush has faced intense political pressure to overhaul his Iraq policy, following the rout of his Republican party in mid-term elections, rock-bottom approval of his management of the Iraq war and mounting US combat deaths.
A policy review by the Iraq Study Group, a bi-partisan panel, recommended that all frontline US troops be withdrawn by early 2008.
So the Democrats, James Baker, and Al Qaeda in Iraq all agree -- we must exit Iraq, the sooner the better.
If all of those people agree, what are we waitin' for? 100 million Democrats and 100 million jihadis can't be wrong.
Note the article also claims that Bush attempted to negotiated with AQII through "Saudi representatives," but AQII rebuffed the attempt. This is pure nonsense, but that's also on the tape. There you go.
Question: If Al Qaeda in Iraq and Al Qaeda itself want to negoatiate, isn't that a good sign we shouldn't?
Wouldn't that also suggest we shouldn't negotiate with terror states like Syria and Iran, too?

— Ace There will be nothing but the most grudgihg covrage of this.
I brought up this hypoethetical when CNN justified running the sniper terrorist propaganda footage by stating that reporting "the truth" overtrumped other considerations such as aiding the enemy in its propaganda efforts. Well, I wondered, will CNN give Al Qaeda's well-nigh inevitable congratulations to the Democrats equal play in its coverage? After all, "the truth" is what matters, right?
But other than a mention on ABCNews' blog The Blotter, and a big headline on Drudge, you won't see much mention of this ever again. Ever, ever, ever.
Al Qaeda has sent a message to leaders of the Democratic party that credit for the defeat of congressional Republicans belongs to the terrorists. In a portion of the tape from al Qaeda No. 2 man, Ayman al Zawahri, made available only today, Zawahri says he has two messages for American Democrats.
"The first is that you aren't the ones who won the midterm elections, nor are the Republicans the ones who lost. Rather, the Mujahideen -- the Muslim Ummah's vanguard in Afghanistan and Iraq -- are the ones who won, and the American forces and their Crusader allies are the ones who lost," Zawahri said, according to a full transcript obtained by ABC News.
Zawahri calls on the Democrats to negotiate with him and Osama bin Laden, not others in the Islamic world who Zawahri says cannot help.
John Kerry immediately booked a flight to Islamabad.

— Ace "Sexual offense" and kidnapping charges remain.
Makes sense -- if she lied completely about the rape, that must mean she's telling the truth double-plus-good about everything else!
Why drop it now? Because the victim herself isn't sure a rape occurred anymore.
District Attorney Mike Nifong reported that the victim yesterday told a D.A.'s investigator that while initially believing that she had been "vaginally penetrated by a male sex organ," she can no longer testify with certainty that that occurred.
It's an easy enough thing to forget. I know Bill Clinton was always pretty hazy on it.
Justice is coming. For Nifong.

— Ace Update: It's Old. Sorry, this is a 2001 article. It's still, I guess, relevant, but it's not news anymore. Thanks to mrp for spotting that. (On the left masthead it has today's date, but on the right it says "First Published Sept 5, 2001.")
Two out of three charged with rape in Norway's capital are immigrants with a non-western background according to a police study. The number of rape cases is also rising steadily. The study is the first where the crime statistics have been analyzed according to ethnic origin. Of the 111 charged with rape in Oslo last year, 72 were of non-western ethnic origin, 25 are classified as Norwegian or western and 14 are listed as unknown.Rape charges in the capital are spiraling upwards, 40 percent higher from 1999 to 2000 and up 13 percent so far this year.
Nine out of ten cases do not make it to prosecution, most of them because police do not believe the evidence is sufficient to reach a conviction.
Police Inspector Gunnar Larsen of Oslo's Vice, Robbery and Violent crime division says the statistics are surprising - the rising number of rape cases and the link to ethnic background are both clear trends. But Larsen does not want to speculate on the reasons behind the worrying developments.
