Big Update: Goss Forced Out
— Ace

According to CBS News. Over "tensions" between Goss and Negroponte, and of course between Goss and the liberal leak machine we call the CIA.

All recapped by Allah.

Jpod notes what several commenters have noted here-- that it's pretty unlikely Bush would have had a photo-op with the man if it involved genuine scandal. Further, the officially accepted code for such a departure is "leaving for personal reasons," which wasn't mentioned, as far as I know.

So-- the CIA is immune to reform.

Defund it; fold the good parts of it into the NSA and military intelligence.

Worse Than Thought: Goss Resigned Because "Something Happened"
— Ace

Something bad. That's what William Kristol said on Fox News today.

“Something happened,” neo-conservative magazine editor William Kristol said on Fox News this afternoon. “It’s going to be a bad few days. We’re going to discover something … It will be something not good for the Bush Administration.”

Great. Allah tells me liberals are frothing over the possibility it has something to do with the Watergate Hookers scandal.

Quite frankly, I hope it's something along those lines, rather than some malfeasance, or some bad news for the country that Goss missed.

Porter Goss Resigns As Director Of Central Intelligence
— Ace

Wow.

Not good. No idea what it means, but it doesn't seem like a good thing.

Was he forced out? If so, what the hell is going on with the Bush Administration? This was the one guy who seemed committed to exposing the cabal of liberal leakers.

Moussaoui Got Off Because He Had "Limited Knowledge" of 9/11 Plot
— Ace

Errrmmm... okay. How much knowledge does it actually require to get put to death for a crime you participated in? The son-of-a-bitch knew they were flying airplanes into buildings; isn't that enough?

Apparently not.

A lot of liberal trolls are over here claiming that, as a matter of law, Moussaoui couldn't be put to death because he didn't actually kill anyone.

Ummm... really? Is that why the judge certified this as a death-eligible case and we had a death-penalty-phase?

He was involved in a conspiracy to commit mass-murder and took steps to commit that crime. Under standard jurisprudence -- here, as in Germany, German-Nazi-troll -- he is responsible for crimes committed by his confederates, including murder.

Allah notes that the media is full-spin mode defending the jury's shameless decision, noting how awful supermax prison is, etc.

You know what else is awful? Execution. Like, spending a year or two on death row (nastier than supermax prison) and then being brought to the death chamber where they fill your heart with poison.

The flipside of Zarkawi - First Iraqi Ranger
— Tanker

Well, we know that Zarko can't pull his own trigger without his valet to help him. But real freedom fighters can graduate from Ranger school.

A former lieutenant in Saddam Hussein's army on Friday will become the first Iraqi to graduate from the Army's Ranger School, a 61-day training ordeal that pushes soldiers to their physical and mental limits in forests, swamps and mountains.

And he won't be the only foreigner either.

He will graduate Friday with 185 classmates, including students from Moldova, Taiwan, the Czech Republic, Georgia and Greece.

It looks like the one thing thing they all have in common is being under fascist/communist dictatorships/occupation, or continuing to be threatened by such menaces. I guess they aren't satisfied with being protected by the UN or EU for some reason.

French May Demand Moussaoui Transfer
— Ace

...and they will, wink-wink, imprison him for life, just as in America.

Unbelievable.

Journalist Fired For Making Fake MySpace Page For Political Enemy
— Ace

Seems a reporter didn't like the fact that a local politician didn't share her exuberance for all things Gay Pride.

So this fair-and-balanced, unbiased, straight-down-the-middle, double-shot-of-truth-no-chaser Priest of Information created a fake MySpace page for the politician, mocking her.

And was fired then resigned when her partisan activities were outed.

The media will fire you, of course, for violating their number-one rule: Don't give away the fact that they're archliberals and outright leftists. You can lard up your reports with that sort of bias, but if you take a step that actually proves bias beyond all doubt, they have to fire you and pretend they're "outraged."

Correction: I wrote the reporterette was fired. She wasn't. She resigned; I imagine she was about to be fired, or was given the option of resigning or being fired.

Thanks to Bart for the correction.

Bonus Friday Double-Secret Correction! The reporter was a woman, so I guess standard Enlgish requires me to refer to her as "she," not "he."

I guess.

If you're a big stickler for "accuracy."

Thanks to Shawn, but not lowercased shawn.

Rummy's Heckler: Anti-Semitic Conspiracy-Theory Peddler (And Defender of Mary McCarthy, Natch!)
— Ace

Here's how the AP's most recent article described him:

...a former CIA analyst...

...an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq.

Here's how Jim Lehrer of PBS described him:

Ray McGovern was an analyst for 27 years. He retired in 1990. He is now a member of the group Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, which has criticized the current administration for politicizing intelligence.

And here's how someone not in the MSM describes him. Jacob Laskin of Front Page:

McGovern was not above retailing anti-Israel conspiracy theories. Hence he claimed, inter alia, that an Israeli company had advanced warning of the 9/11 attacks—an accusation echoed in literature passed out by Democratic activists at the hearing.

It's very interesting what the MSM considers newsworthy and too "confusing" to readers to report, eh?

More at Gateway Pundit. McGovern: "The US may be manufacturing fake terrorists."

Oh yeah, I can see why the MSM doesn't include that in his bio. It's not an "interesting theory," as Howard Dean might say, and it is not at all helpful in evaluating or establishing an, ummm, intellectual context for his other theories.

Star Trek Rising: Anti-Matter Fuel, Cloaking Device In Research
— Ace

Anti-matter fuel:

Warp drives may be the stuff of science fiction, but another Star Trek staple appears to be edging toward science fact.

The energy source that enables the starship Enterprise to boldly go where no one has gone before has, according to one controversial new claim, moved much closer to reality.

A New Mexico company has just completed its initial studies of an antimatter-powered rocket that it hopes will someday take astronauts to Mars in 90 days or less.

...

In the 1950s Austrian engineer Eugen Sänger first suggested using positron-electron annihilations to power spacecraft. But one of the chief problems that dogged his efforts was storage.

...

Positronics' researchers base their novel antimatter rocket design on published studies that an electrically neutral positron atom could be artificially held together for at least several years.

The atoms, called positronium, consist of an electron and positron orbiting each other. Normally positronium can exist for only fractions of a millisecond before the two mirror particles annihilate each other.

However, in a series of papers published in the journals Physical Review Letters and Physical Review in 1997 and 1998, a team of German and U.S. theorists calculated that the right combination of electric and magnetic fields would stretch out the positronium like a barbell and greatly reduce the probability of the electrons and positrons annihilating.

"We've done the calculations," Smith said. "And it's not uncommon to find that the lifetime [of the enhanced positronium] is [practically] infinite."

Cloaking device:

The cloaking devices that are used to render spacecraft invisible in Star Trek might just work in reality, two mathematicians have claimed.

They have outlined their concept in a research paper published in one of the UK Royal Society's scientific journals.

Nicolae Nicorovici and Graeme Milton propose that placing certain objects close to a material called a superlens could make them appear to vanish.

It would rely on an effect known as "anomalous localised resonance".

However, the authors have so far only done the maths to verify that the concept could work. Building such a device would undoubtedly pose a significant challenge.

...

The phenomenon is analogous to a tuning fork (which rings with a single sound frequency) being placed next to a wine glass. The wine glass will start to ring with the same frequency; it resonates.

The cloaking effect would exploit a resonance with light waves rather than sound waves.

The concept is at such a primitive stage that scientists are talking only at the moment of being able to cloak particles of dust - not spaceships.

In this example, an illuminated speck of dust would scatter light at frequencies that induce a strong, finely tuned resonance in a cloaking material placed very close by.

The resonance effectively cancels out the light bouncing off the speck of dust, rendering the dust particle invisible.

One way to construct a cloaking device is to use a superlens, made of recently discovered materials that force light to behave in unusual ways.

And a little bonus from Allah. Not really very Star Trek, but a 30cm high robot is now running at record speeds, 3.5 stride-lengths per second.

CNN Reporter Spins For Zarqawi's Weapon Incompetence
— Ace

CNN, playing to its audience (an America-hating, terrorist-sympathizing world audience) actually makes excuses for Zarqawi's inability to handle the squad automatic weapon, and furthermore, begins making crap up about the "heavy" gun with its "very heavy trigger" to reduce Zarqawi's humiliation.

Looks like CNN is looking to suck up to Zarqawi as it did with Saddam Hussein.
