23 Oh for the love of... There's a music site I used to post at until the moderators started allowing political posts (which had been banned) and since the Progs have to make everything political, I quit the site. Just popped in after 2 years to have a look around. They are discussing the drunk driver who killed 2 and injured 23 at the SXSW Festival. Guess who they're blaming? That's right, let's say it all together: BOOOOOSH Apparently, since Austin is in TX and Booooosh used to be governor of TX, it's clearly Booooosh's fault. Except one or two of them who are, get this, blaming the cops. It'll be another 2 years at least before I pop back in over there.

26 Good thing we know that there can be no possible improvement on the Micro USB standard, which was introduced in 2007. So we can just mandate it by law forever. I'm sure 2007 technology will stay state-of-the-art forever and ever. BBC ... European member states will have until 2016 to translate the regulation into national laws and manufacturers will then have 12 months to switch to the new design. The process of getting manufacturers to agree on a common design began in 2009. The design of charger being favoured uses a Micro USB connector - a format used on many handsets and other devices already.

31 Nice podcast this week. Fascinating to learn that Drew has a poster of Jen Rubin on his bedroom door. Exit question that should have been asked: granting that ace's dream of the Supremes overturning O-care for not being a law is dead, is there a way it still could be struck down on constitutional grounds--disparate impact/equal protection perhaps? A flaw with Drew's argument that you can't count on the courts to advance the ball for you: see judges, liberal activist and marriage, homosexual.

32 Posted by: Flatbush Joe at March 14, 2014 04:22 PM (ZPrif) Micro USB is required I thought for Android, and Windows Phone (yeah yeah mock me). Apple's the hold out on that, or so I thought. what I really want is a wireless charging standard. Nokia is supporting Qi, and AT&T supports PMA, which means that phones end up with no built in charging .

37 Actually, there's tons of activity in wireless charging tech. And there's a good chance the micro USB will be out-dated in the near future. But, hey, let's use the heavy hand of govt to mandate micro USB charging on everything. All multiple chargers annoying? Yeah -- so what? Not every problem requires a government solution. I prefer gadgets with the more universal USB chargers -- so I buy them and shun ones with proprietary connectors. Millions of others do the same which is why USB connectors have such large and growing market share. I think Apple's connectors usually are technically superior, but I don't buy Apple products so it's not an issue for me.

62 There's no compelling public interest in govt mandating a universal phone charging standard. It's just the stupidity of people finding an annoyance in life and demanding, "there oughta be a law!" No, there's no need for a law. It's just a pretty mild annoyance. I have a box filled with an assortment of power cable and chargers I've accumulated over the years. Occasionally I've lost a charger for a gadget and had to buy a new one. Big deal. There's no need for govt locking in a standard. I try to buy gadgets with USB charging. Millions of others do the same. At some point someone will probably invent something better. And then the market will migrate to that. It hurts innovations and consumers to needless lock in a certain technology. Do it when there's a huge public safety issue. This is just solving a fairly minor annoyance. Yet it will be cheered by most, I'm sure. And this is why govt sucks and does stupid things, because the pubic sucks and demands the govt does stupid, needless things. Especially with wireless charging on the verge of going mainstream.

He broke formation during a training flight, flew hundred of miles off course, not in a straight line but under control, and crashed into a mountain near Vail, Colorado with 2 minutes of fuel left. It took 3 weeks to find the plane. He was carrying active bombs which have never been found.

86 I think CAC is overly pessimistic that GOP can't win without PA. However, Dems definitely can't win without it. I grew up in the 5 counties area that ace referenced. It's populated by Reagan Democrats and Clinton Republicans. Without a candidate as good as Reagan, we won't win those counties without a solid ground game as CAC noted. But he who wins the Philly suburbs wins the state. A few percentage points in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties will swing the state vote. By the way, each of those counties has a population near or greater than the entire state of Wyoming, and Montgomery County alone has a population that is 100K greater than Detroit. If you transplanted Detroit to Pennsylvania and had it vote R+5, think the GOP would carry the state? That's why CAC keeps pounding this idea. Win those counties and it's over. If we carry PA, we're going to win Ohio as well, and Colorado can go to hell, EV speaking.

Politics, like warfare, often finds the strategists planning as if they are fighting the last one.

I don't  believe  2016 will look as much like past elections as some people think.  I'm not smart enough to predict these things, except to say that anyone who is talking  right now  about which  states we need and which  ones  we don't are operating on about the same  level as if they were trying to predict  what the weather will be like in November of 2016.

Will it be cold?  Probably.  If you live  in much of North America.   Beyond that, nobody  really has a clue.

139 What the EU could do that would make more sense (but cost more of course) would be to start requiring all new construction and remodels to install a standard power outlet.

There are so many different styles it's ridiculous. We don't understand that because ours started out with a standard as their were few companies making them and a standard was easier to require by code.

Thus the two prong and three prong outlet.

Over on the "Continent" it's a different story. Every country took a different direction. (and some have a differing standard for the power itself in waveform and voltage)

I'm not sure how many different outlets there are but I've seen universal adaptor kits that had at least 5 different thingies to adapt to whatever outlet you encountered.

And having a universal charger actually makes sense as now we have a charger for each gadget and it's becoming a mess. Having one charger that could charge any gadget would be a boon and waste less electricity and be less of a hazard.

Man Question:  I have the kind of beard where I look like a hobo when I wake up in the morning, and we know that's unsafe in some parts.

Gillette threw a free Fusion Pro-Glide blade in my last pack of Mach 3s.  It was way better, but I think they might have dulled the blades on the Mach 3s just to move me upmarket.  Well, I moved upmarket, just bought the Pro-Glides.

These things are $5 a blade, though.  I get three, four shaves out of one, so it's like $1.50 to shave everyday.  (I know, being hobo hunted is more costly).

208 167 Tomorrow is Purim, right? What drinks go with Purim? Posted by: grammie winger at March 14, 2014 04:57 PM (oMKp3) Laphroaig or Midleton's is my choiceÂ… Or a Manischewitz Concord Grape baby! Actually, my dad, now of blessed memory, stumbled upon a genius drink. He accidentally let a bottle of ginger ale freeze a bit and get slushy and he mixed a little with the red red kosher kroovy and it was brilliant! Thanks, Pop!

To Ace and the podcast crew,

Please dump this curse-free format.  It's boring as shit.

The first podcasts were great, it was like sitting in a back room with some friends and some beers, talking shit about the other side.  It was fun, there was laughter and hijinks and a person could feel that they were an equal in this setting, just one of the boys.

This highbrow thing is the complete opposite.  It's a bunch of people "not like you" talking in a high minded, outsider way.  This isn't a backroom chat on a saturday night, it's a panel discussion with suits and ties and correspondinly less fun and less engaging.

Doubtless you can't please everyone but come on guys, and Ace, don't go down this path.  Drink and curse and behave like friends would when chatting about this stuff, in other words, be your natural selves.  It's so much more entertaining and enjoyable.

Respectfully,

a listener

217 which one of you guys was drinking? That is one good wife. I was waiting for "go make me a sammich while you're in there!" Posted by: shredded chi at March 14, 2014 05:00 PM (6wojC) She cooked me Chicken Parmesan, made me a Whiskey Sour, then another Whiskey Sour, then an Old Fashioned, and a few shots of Bulleit Rye. She's an awesome wife.

218 CAC is right - there is room to grab a few points in urban centers. The problem is as (I think Richard J. Daley said) it doesn't matter who votes, it only matters who counts the vote. A dear friend worked as a Assistant State's Attorney in Cook County (Chicago) and did polling place inspections during a bunch of elections. Typical example, in 2000 he kept track of answers to a simple question directed to Republican judges: "Who is running for Vice President?" You guessed it - 90% of the Republican judges didn't know Dick Cheney. Because, they weren't Republican at all. Nor were they fair minded arbiters of elections. This has become less of a problem as the suburbs have gone more Democratic but even now, the urban precincts always hold back to see other results and then, wow magically, find a few boxes of uncounted ballots. CAC is right in that there is a real opportunity to grab some more votes. The left is the best at pounding away at small fissures between righty groups. I think there is a HUGE opportunity to pound away at the differences and competing interests between the government unions and the skilled trade unions. The left loves them some government unions because they are growing and help execute the utopian vision. No one in Illinois reminds the trades that the Chicago Teachers Union and SEIU support "assault weapons" bans. I always thought one of the problems of the Juan McClane campaign was the shunning of the Palins - both of them. Todd was a member of the United Steel Workers, not the East Bank Club. And that is the point. Sorry about the rant. I am just disgusted with Chicago & C(r)ook County. Nice credit rating, eh? Oh, yeah. Since my friend almost got his ass kicked by machine meatheads at a polling place a couple of cycles ago, he started getting the flu on election day. Get this, there were two ASAs together, both over 240 pounds. They were saved by Chicago Detectives at the nick of time. The best part is that on the next day they got shit from their supervisor for causing trouble. They hadn't shown their IDs to anyone but the detectives. As we like to say here, the corruption is endemic, pervasive and institutionalized.
