Civil (and Uncivil) War Thread [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

This thread is for you to get your hate on... or just discuss politics.

Some thread-fodder below:
Apparently, we still hate each other:

Civil War Still Divides Americans, at least according to a 2011 CNN Poll:

In the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Tuesday, roughly one in four Americans said they sympathize more with the Confederacy than the Union, a figure that rises to nearly four in ten among white Southerners.

When asked the reason behind the Civil War, whether it was fought over slavery or states' rights, 52 percent of all Americans said the leaders of the Confederacy seceded to keep slavery legal in their state, but a sizeable 42 percent minority said slavery was not the main reason why those states seceded.

Meanwhile, onto more, shall we say "modern" divisions, here's something to chew on from Richard Epstein, My Rand Paul Problem:

Libertarians fall into two distinct groups: strict libertarians like Rand Paul and classical liberals such as myself. “Classical liberal” is not a term that rolls off of the tongue. Consequently, “libertarian” is the choice term in popular discourse when discussing policies that favor limited government. Libertarians of all stripes oppose President Obama’s endless attacks on market institutions and the rich. The umbrella term comfortably embraces both strands of libertarian theory vis-à-vis a common intellectual foe.

The renewed attention to Paul exposes the critical tension between hard-line libertarians and classical liberals. The latter are comfortable with a larger government than hard-core libertarians because they take into account three issues that libertarians like Paul tend to downplay: (1) coordination problems; (2) uncertainty; (3) and matters of institutional design. None of this is at all evident from Tanenhaus and Rutenberg’s unfair caricature of the “mixed inheritance” among the “libertarian faithful,” which to them includes, “antitax activists and war protestors, John Birch Society members, and a smatter of truthers who suspect the government’s hand in the 2001 terrorist attacks.”

This unfortunate list mixes libertarians of all stripes into a convention of unthinking kooks. A more accurate rendition of the various strands of libertarian thought would hearken back to such great thinkers as Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Hume, Smith, and Madison. Their incisive contributions concerned the relationship between individual liberty and the social order.

Have at it, morons!

Secession was about slavery. The War Between the States was about states' rights vs. federal power.

I've never understood the North's position on the war: We hate the Southern states so much that we will not let them go.

By the way, I think it's inaccurate to call it a civil war. The South was fighting for its independence, not to overthrow the government of the United States.

Posted by: Mike Hammer at February 09, 2014 02:21 PM (aDwsi)

22 The Civil War was part of the larger emergent trend away from agriculture-based societies in general - and was not the only war to have ended that, only the one which ended it here. Slavery, then, is only a part inasmuch that human energy capital was the means of powering agriculture in the South at the time.

I think that it is a mistake for the Republicans to, as the Romney campaign urges, overturn Roe at this point and return the matter to the states. I believe that this position made sense before Roe was decided. But the decision has been the law of the land for 40 years, and has produced a stable set of expectations that would be shattered in unpredictable ways if the issue went to the states.

Richard A. Epstein

Ah, unpredictability.  The bete noire of "classical liberals" everywhere.....

31 I consider myself a Civil War buff and love studying the period.  Years ago I was in Charleston talking to a local and made the mistake of referring to it as the Civil War.  He quickly corrected me.  It was the war of northern aggression.  He was the curator of a small museum.  Interesting conversation.

32 >>>>I've never understood the North's position on the war The thing the Southerners have right is it was very much a war of aggression. We Northerners forget it or dismiss it as immaterial, but there were several high-profile provocations that northerners engaged in. Those persons saw it as a fight to free the slaves. The more immediate concern, though, was the Compromise. If it were allowed to stand, the character of the future States was uncertain. The North regarded any future States as more properly belonging to them and their influences. When they took Kansas the first thing they did was build schools, to teach the kids the 'right way to think' about it all, using the new methods. Progressives are ever the same.

I had seen Mister Roberts as a kid & loved it, but it was half listening & not watching. I never saw Auntie Mame, heard most of it & only started to watch at very end. TCM has iPad app, but neither one of them are on demand on it. Baby Doll is going to be on again. I know you didn't like it, I'm warning you it will be on in next few days. I looked at on screen TV Guide, it will be on Wednesday @ 1:45 am. Judgement at Nuremberg is going to be on MGM channel. Someone mentioned that this week. It will be on tomorrow at 6:30 am. WSJ -
Laura Ingraham KO's George Will. When Economic Nationalism Is Better Than Immigration

Sadly, among elites there is no consideration that the global perception of economic opportunity in America is relative – that things may be getting so bad in a native land that even a declining U.S. economy is worth the risk of emigration.  This is hardly the dynamic process of economic growth, on either side of the equation.

164 The elephant in the room regarding immigration is that we're supposed to import a new class of slave laborers because there's a labor shortage caused by the welfare class getting paid all these years to become indolent. So, rather than expect our native-born illiterates to get up off the couch and go to work, we'll import foreign-born illiterates to do the low-end jobs because they'll work at a discount rate and vote reliably Democrat.

For another, the South is full of Mexicans.  Florida is filled with rich, influential Jooos who'll never mentally secede from Brooklyn, and what about the blacks? They're not going to secede from the U.S. to join some New Confederacy. It's a pipe dream. Charlie Daniels had a song, "The South is Gonna Do it Again." And what issue was the driving force behind kansas? Slavery. And it would have been the same throughout the west. I guess we're the cause of all social ills by ignoring them and focusing on lowering taxes and getting back to true Constitutional govt. Who knew? Posted by: ManWithNoParty at February 09, 2014 08:50 PM (ojnk6) Bugs is just the latest iteration of the troll who's been around for a couple of days, but I'm amazed by the lefties who actually believe the Tea Party movement is a threat. These aren't stupid people in anything other than matters of politics and public policy. In other respects, they're productive, reasonable people. They have no awareness at all of how they're being manipulated.

309 I linked this on the ONT the other night. Bob Dylan "Cross the Green Mountain": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw8YjVrRNRU This song was written for the movie "Gods and Generals" and is heard over the closing credits. This is an abbreviated version. The full version is eight minutes long and contains a lot more verses. It's on the "Bootleg Series Vol. 8" CD, and is easily worth the price for this song alone. Fun fact: Bob Dylan is a Civil War buff. In his autobiography, he described arriving in New York City at age 21 and spending days in the library reading Civil War era newspapers on microfilm.

Any of you morons/'ettes read Kenneth Stampp's, The Peculiar Institution?  If you haven't, you should. It was written by a UC Berkeley history prof. before Berkeley became Berzerkely. It makes a very good argument that slavery would have gone away before 1900 simply due to the many and serious problems posed by having slaves. So many people have this stupid idea that slaves were treated harshly as a matter of course; it made no more sense to treat one's slaves badly then than it would now to go out and beat the Hell out of your tractor on a whim. The laws of economics were just as valid then as they are now. It's MUCH easier for employers to pay workers the minimum the market will allow and make them responsible for themselves. In the end it's also cheaper.

The first American Civil War could have the same description applied that Winston Churchill coined for the Second World War: "The Unnecessary War." It was fought over a dying institution that would have been gone in 50 years anyway. Anyone who questions that need only look at Brazil and how they handled the issue of slavery in a society far more conducive to it. They dumped it too, and for the same reason: it was an economic loser compared to wage labor.

322 266, you're right again. There is plenty of racism up North, but it's usually a racism among "equals" in that it's a turf battle between warring tribes, unlike in the South where there was actually a system of  apartheid based on a "natural" order for a long time.  The genius of the Democrats has always been to offer enough free shit in the form of patronage, payoffs and welfare that they can have racists and blacks under the same tent. It's really a neat trick. There are plenty of "natural conservatives" in New Jersey, but they are dominated statewide by five or six  major Democrat-run , black-dominated cities which renders their votes useless in presidential elections years due to the Electoral college. Republicans have to play ball with them.
