Compare and Contrast
— Ace

The "barricade" at the WWI memorial is just a single six-foot length of fence, barricading nothing at all, and a sign:

Now let's look at the WWII memorial.

Wow, it's almost like Fort Knox, if Fort Knox is where we guarded our precious stores of grass and concrete.

What's the difference?

Simple, really: There are Honor Flights of vets scheduled to see the latter but not the former.

Thus this isn't about "maintenance" or "saving money" or CPR, as the Park Service claimed yesterday. (That they had staff trained in CPR administration, who were not actually at the site, but I guess theoretically if someone stopped breathing they could take a cab and get there in 20 minutes or something.)

This is about the fact that a lot of people are coming to see the WWII Memorial, and the Administration wishes to hurt them.

Very few people are coming to see the WWI Memorial (sadly), and thus suddenly these worries about "CPR" and "maintenance" (of concrete) and "funding" no longer apply.

By the way, let's look at the funding for the WWII Memorial.

The National World War II Memorial was funded almost entirely by private contributions, as specified in Public Law 103-32. The campaign received more than $197 million in cash and pledges. Support came from hundreds of thousands of individual Americans, hundreds of corporations and foundations, veterans groups, dozens of civic, fraternal and professional organizations, states and one territory, and students in 1,200 schools across the country.

Donated and pledged funds were used to cover the total project costs of approximately $182 million. These costs include site selection and design, construction and sculpture, a National Park Service maintenance fee required by the Commemorative Works Act, groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, fund raising, and the 11-year administrative costs of the project from its inception in 1993 through completion in 2004.

Remaining funds are held on deposit with the U.S. Treasury in a National WWII Memorial Trust Fund. The funds will be used by the American Battle Monuments Commission solely to benefit the World War II Memorial.

Hey Barack Obama -- you didn't fucking build that. Someone else did, and someone else is paying for its upkeep.

My Comment from the last thread that needs reiterated and focused on by Ace

"Wait a minute. What kind of First Amendment activity might be exempted and allowed to go on.... hell even encouraged?

The sons of bitches wanted to close the memorials- but SPECIFICALLY EXPEMT AND ALLOW people to gather around them and protest the evil republicans in a super photo op. That's the only reason a first amendment exception could be in there.

Bastards. "

Wonder why California is broke and the LA Unified School District struggles at its core mission of educating children? The sad saga of the iPad project demonstrates at least some of the issues.  At an estimated cost of $1 billion, the LAUSD launched an effort to hand out “borrowed” iPads to its students in order to minimize textbook and material costs, but despite all of the money spent, their security program on the devices lasted hours in the hands of the students.  Now the district will try to confiscate all of the iPads, throwing in the towel on the massive investment after just a few weeks:

This has probably been mentioned here at the HQ already, but this was Rand Paul's reaction to this story yesterday on "Hannity":

“If Harry Reid and the President want to keep the parks closed— I mean did you read the story today? Some idiot in government sent goons out there to set up barricades, so they couldn’t see the monument. People had to spend hours setting up barricades where there are never barricades to prevent people from seeing the World War II monument because they’re trying to play a charade,” Rand (R-Ky.) said Tuesday on Fox News’s “Hannity.”

Damn right!

And while I got that passage from the    Hot   Air,     it's actually from Politico.     You know how I knew it was from a lefty outfit    before I even checked?   From the very next paragraph.

PaulÂ’s attack[ /b]    comes after reports that a group of World War II veterans had to break down barricades to access the National World War II Memorial, one of the sites that was closed due to the government shutdown.

That's right.   Pointing out the buffoonery and    theatrical tactics of this asshole regime is an ATTACK.

104 Delurking... I had the honor and privilege to attend the opening ceremonies for the WWII Memorial during Memorial Day weekend 2004. As a newly separated Navy veteran, I was in total awe of being in the company of so many heroes. And it wasn't just WWII veterans that attended, but also veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam War and the first Gulf War. And everybody, of all shapes, sizes and colors, were brothers together...celebrating our proud military history. I was like a kid in a candy store, I was so excited. That experience will always be one of my favorites. And now I see how this asshole and company treat this men and it pisses me the fuck off. Honestly, if I were to say what I really thought of Obama, his fat ass wife and the rest of the Democrats...I would be banned. Just another reminder, if my local news is right, the NPS did not close the Arch Grounds, only the Building.

The grounds are a National Park, yet remains "open" (you can't close the outdoors but you know what I mean.)

I kinda understand closing the main entrances to places like Yellowstone because you don't have the staff to clear the roads and such if there's a car breakdown or what have you (assuming the roads aren't actual through roads which is a different question altogether) but this is insanity of the highest order.

Brilliant!  We're evil monsters for wanting to secure our border, but TFG has no problem erecting fencing to keep veterans and other Americans from honoring those who served in WWII.

The arrogance and hatred that this administration has are simply mind blowing.

197 I went to a gun rights rally in Tallahassee years ago and struck up a conversation with one of the state police assigned.

As the event ended, the cop said it was the most respectful protest he'd ever seen.  Not a single flower was trampled, and there was ZERO trash on the ground.  He said typical protests at the state capitol entailed total replanting of the flower beds and massive trash cleanup.  We left the place in better shape than we found it.

203 Hey, this is interesting.  If the NIST site wasn't turned off I'd look further into it.

All government systems must pass NIST 800-53 security testing, which include disaster recovery and dealing with capacity issues.  Apparently the NIST director testified at some point that HHS was not being granted an exception for the exchanges.

So if the exchanges are crashing like this, it means they failed their security testing, or were never tested.  They should not have received their ATO (Authority to Operate).

Now I wouldn't go so far as to say someone broke the law by allowing the sites to go live, but they clearly violated a very strong policy framework that this administration has been shoving down everyone's throats everywhere else.

204 Very few people are coming to see the WWI Memorial (sadly), I am ashamed to admit that I've never been there. Something about that "except for 1st Amendment" keeps niggling at the back of my mind. Why? Because it sounds like the holding in some SCOTUS case. Maybe, maybe not, but I feel like I should know the import of it. As far as the WWII monument, I say that everyone who can get there goes there and asserts their First Amendment right to stand there and protest this act of Shutdown Theater. That is clearly political speech. I really do think TFG thought there would be crying vets blaming the Republicans for this. Yeah, that knowing nothing about the military thing? That can come back to bite you. Hard.

280 I had a friend who was a WW2 veteran. He passed away not too long ago. He was with the third army unit that freed the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria. He said that they were responsible for guarding the SS prisoners. They circled them with one rail of barbed wire. A couple walked over the line and were shot down instantly. He said that they would throw one horse in for 15,000 of those assholes to fight over. If it had been up to the men in his unit they would have shot every last one of them and been done with it. He was a nice, kind and gentle man, but he and his pals saved western civilization. They don't take shit from anyone. That generation had nerves if steel and would face down anyone. The generations that followed, not so much.

The third guy is in charge of making sure that first guy passes the plastic tie to the second guy. Based on my decades of knowledge in motivation and productivity, I'd venture one guy, fearful of losing his job, could find room in his pocket for some plastic ties. In a capitalistic system, that is. But Nancy Pelosi can't find one dollar to cut out of the budget, no-sir-ee.

333 The WH residence staff has been cut back from 90 to 15. Right. Sure. What this actually means is that maybe 10 or 15 have been furloughed and the rest are temporarily being paid out of other agencies' funds. I knew someone on the WH residence staff (father of a friend) who was "let go" by Carter so POTUS could look frugal. All it meant was that he'd be paid by the GSA instead. Same job. If the 6-figure-salaried dog-walker has been "furloughed," BTW, I'll bet it just means he's now being paid by the NPS! (They care for the WH grounds and the walker's job could easily be deemed outdoor work.)

Everyone is responsible for their own actions and decisions. The Park Police (I'd hope) didn't sign on to be political pawns and should have refused to do so. That they didn't means they care more for their own security than for the law they claim to represent. Which, again, is not actually all that surprising, but it is very sad.

350 Apparently people are now walking right around the Barrycades for the Korean War monument as well. Story time! A few years back I was in DC for a conference and after the night session was over I went wandering around the Mall. I had completely forgotten that the Korean War monument was completed. It was right after sunset and fog had rolled in and I walked directly into it. My first reaction was panic because it was rather startling. Then I realized where I was and I burst into tears. I cannot begin to explain how moving it was. Part of me wishes everyone could have that experience. By the way, notice how there are no stories of people trying to break into the Smithsonian buildings and the like. Why? Because people who are not petulant children comprehend the difference between closing a building and "closing" an open air memorial.

I've already lost one job for accidently standing up for what I thought was right (seriously, I didn't even realize there was even a line, just walked right past it, and no one said anything until several weeks later when they decided suddenly "not to renew my contract.")

In any case having done that before (by accident), I don't blame someone for not trying to be the hero here.  It is what it is, and the fear of being pushed out in the cold in this economy may drive people to do things we ordinarily wouldn't.  The world is a sad sad place to live in.

353 I agree with this post 100% and I find it a shameful disgrace that this would be barricaded, regardless of who funds it. With that being said I must point out that the top picture is of the U.S. Second Infantry Division Memorial, NOT the WWI Memorial. Get your fucking facts straight.

355 One last thing (because I'm a terrible procrastinator): the Park Police thought it was TOTAL BULLSHIT. Was talking w/one of them (before the vets showed up) and the guy was polite and not outright insubordinate in any way but it was clear from the eye-rolling and choice of words that he thought this was pathetic theatrical joke. And if he, and his superior officers all thought thought that, (heck, not even "all" just enough) they could have simply refused the order. And they should have. I'm glad they were annoyed by it, but obviously they weren't annoyed enough by it to say, "No, I won't be used for your political theater." Today was a day the Park Police should have come down with the Blue Flu.

359 The Park Rangers are a disgrace, simply BECAUSE they are "just obeying orders". They know exactly what they are doing and are doing it anyway. Fuck them, say I.

This.

The point of shitting on the park rangers' collective reputation isn't simply punitive for obeying Obama. It's to send a message to anyone else who might be inclined to 'just follow orders'.

If you disobey your conscience just because the boss makes a demand, you have no character, you are no American, and your fate is no worry of mine.

374 >>>And if he, and his superior officers all thought thought that, (heck, not even "all" just enough) they could have simply refused the order. And they should have.

I think you're being more than bit silly here.  Obama's order may have been stupid, or vindictive, or doltish (it was in fact all of these things) but it was not unlawful.  You cannot refuse unlawful orders, no matter how much you disagree with them, without consequences.  Instead, they did the best possible splitting of the difference: they "followed orders" and then conveniently disappeared, nowhere to be found, when the vets and various other folks went through the barricades to the memorial.

To demand anything else of them is to demand they literally destroy their careers and fall on their swords for this petty bullshit.  They don't want to be pawns in our current partisan drama and you can't compel them to be.  They weren't herding Jews into gas chambers (which is why the Nuremburg "just following orders" phrase I hear from some here is so Godwin-like and out of line), they were putting up easily removed barricades to fulfill the letter of their instructions and then arguably getting themselves into trouble (before the new policy came down) by conspicuously disappearing from the scene to allow those barricades to be overrun.  Give folks a break.

It was a very happy, pleasant, upbeat scene out there today.  Not a lot of anger.  Honestly, it felt less about the current shutdown battle and more about the reverence for the fighting men who gave their lives and their service for the country in World War II.

375 327 It's on the same continuum, imbecile.

Yep. One day you're putting up some temporary barricades after your boss tells you to, tomorrow you're rounding people up for the gas chamber.

Got it.

Hollowpoint's right.  Extermination camps are never preceded by lesser steps or signals that should be any cause for concern.  That's because they always spring up magically, like mushrooms, fully formed, overnight, chimneys smoking away.   Wannabe tyrants would never be so foolish as to test the resolve of their adversaries or the loyalty of their minions by doing tyrant things incrementally.

That's precisely why Hitler did not breach the treaty of Versailles in 1936 by sending a few platoons of armed police into the demilitarized Rhineland with orders that they retreat upon the least showing of French resolve.

It's not like, one day some comical tyrant is gambling on the French backing down in the face of a couple of inexperienced platoons and then, before you know it, he's conquered most of Europe and is gassing Jews, or something.

Posted by: Boiling Frog at October 02, 2013 09:52 AM (Xv7f/)

376 The blame lies with those who gave the order, not those who are simply doing their jobs. -Hollowpoint I see this got kicked around a lot. But I sort-of agree, at least with how I take it: I've been thinking, the drones putting out the gates are nothing to gripe about, really. Sure, it'd be nice if some of them said, "You know what? No!" Honorable people willing to give up their jobs for principle here. But these workers, even the lower-level bureaucrats who give the orders to put up gates, they may be reprehensible morally, but they are indeed just pawns in a game, and as such should melt into insignificance at the vets' mere approach. Theatrically, the barry-cades work against the tyrants. So, thank those guys who were "just following orders" for helping set the stage for new heroics. Save the majority of the wrath for the ones who would actually stand there and enforce the barriers, try to stop the vets from snipping the zips and moving the barricades. It is the enforcers who should be thoroughly castigated... did I spell that right?

Hollowpoint actually is right, and your post is ridiculously overheated.  Hey, you know how we'll know if we're on the way to gas chambers?  When a party takes power on the platform of physically expelling and/or exterminating a certain minority group.  Then forcibly expels them from public life under color of law.  Then passes national legislation disenfranchising and expropriating money from them.  Then holds government-sponsored pogroms against them.

All those things happened in Germany.  Until they do in America, please...please, do not embarrass yourself with this kind of rhetoric.

394 The CPR excuse is made even more bogus when you consider the fact that many of the Guardians who escort the veterans are trained medical people who volunteered (doctors, nurses, EMT'a etc). Our family has been supporting and volunteering (as greeters) for years and a good friend who is a doctor will be on a September flight out of Boston as a guardian. A veteran with any medical needs is paired with a medically trained guardian-if any of them needed CPR there are plenty of volunteers who are brought specifically fornthisnpurpose and probably have better emergency training and experience than the trained CPR park service employee who isn't necessarily always on site anyway. Also as a note if anyone hasn't had the joy of supporting this program I highly recommend it. There is nothing better than to greet these veterans as they leave and return from their day at the memorial.
