Top Story
- EEVBlog is back. (EEVBlog)
Dave's servers are in the same water-affected part of the WebNX datacenter as mine, so this bodes well for my server coming back. I don't have an ETA on my server just yet, but reports from other users show a steady stream of servers returning to life.
As I mentioned, we have servers with WebNX at my day job, though apparently in another part of the datacenter, because two of them came back on line even before the safety inspection.
The ones in the wet zone are taking a while, because they have to be individually de-racked, dried, cleaned, and inspected before they are turned back on. Water isn't too bad for the computery parts of a computer as long as you don't apply power. If you apply power while it's still wet, things can go south in a hurry.
Hard drives are more at risk; the smallest droplet of water inside a drive will kill it. But this system is SSD-only.
This hasn't been fun, but it's a much better outcome than OVH, which simply burned to the ground.
Tech News
- Meanwhile our cloud provider at my day job sent out a reminder of "low impact planned maintenance" in our location and thirty seconds later all our sites went down.
- Speaking of burning to the ground, Amazon's SC1 cold storage is now priced at 1.5¢ per GB. (Amazon)
Sure, that's more than Backblaze B2 object storage, but this is plain old disk. You can mount it, format it with ZFS and your preferred deduplication and compression settings, and then just rsync everything across. It's also encrypted by default, though that doesn't help if someone gets into your AWS account as happened with Ubiquiti.
Getting the data back out costs considerably more - Amazon kills you on bandwidth fees - but it's a lot better than not being able to get your data back out.
We just added rather a lot of this at my day job. We had our data backed up to WebNX, but then WebNX disappeared. So we've decided we now need three geographically-separated locations, not just two.
- Silicon Motion has announced their new SM2708 SD Express controller. (AnandTech)
They're mostly know for their SSD controllers - and this is basically that, squeezed down to SD and even microSD size. With suitably fast flash it will offer transfer rates close to 2GB per second on a device the size of your fingernail.
- Gigabyte has ATX and eATX motherboards for Intel's new Ice Lake SP processors. (AnandTech)
In theory these are aimed at servers, but there's nothing preventing you from using them to build a desktop system. Some of the parts are potentially attractive for workstation use given the drastic price cuts and the absence of any Zen 3 Threadrippers.
The 24-core single-socket model lists for $1450. If it's actually available for that price, it's a little cheaper than current prices on Zen 2 Threadrippers, and not much more than scalper prices on the 16-core Ryzen 5950X.
- Alienware has announced its first AMD laptop since 2007. (Tom's Hardware)
It comes with (up to) a Ryzen 5900HX, RTX 3070, 32GB RAM (probably upgradeable to 64GB), 4TB of NVMe storage, and a 15" 2560x1440 260Hz display.
It also has the Four Essential what the fuck Alienware?
It has four extra keys on the right of the keyboard, where PgUp, PgDn, Home, and End are found on respectable laptops, but they're used for volume control.
Probably they can be remapped in software.
- The HP Omen 15 2021 has similar specs and a possibly ideal keyboard layout. (WCCFTech)
A Ryzen 5900HX and RTX 3070, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD - both look to be user upgradeable - and unfortunately a 144Hz 1080p display with no upgrade options.
Oh, and a tenkeyless desktop keyboard layout - that is, everything in the proper place but no numeric keypad.

Watching TuCa talk about the FedGov going all shock n awe over the Jan 6 event, people thrown in the DC jail, some badly beaten, one killed, most with lives ruined, got me thinking it'll be far worse when they do gun confiscation.

The weird keys on the Alienware. If you're buying one it's for gaming. And perhaps streaming gaming. They probably figure that if you're buying it ease of access to volume controls is worth more than page up and page down for their customer base.

Yep, I'm sure that's their reasoning. It's just frustrating to see laptops that tick all the boxes for both programming and gaming except for one fatal flaw.

Been retired and out of the software development biz for nearly two decades -- and don't keep up with the latest (so enjoy these new posts of and will need to check out your blog, Pixy) and haven't been keeping up with the details of this nearly catastrophic event. Thank you for all your hard work and efforts!
Two questions:
(1) To what does OVH refer?
(2) You reference the servers being wet from water (presumably the "fire suppression" for servers in a data center)? I remember back in the 80's all the computer rooms had halon gas (which was subsequently banned by the U.S. EPA owing to "shrinking ozone layer" hysteria) -- so did these data center server facilities NOT have something chemically along those lines for fire suppression?

There are like 33 million guns and over a billion rounds of ammunition in the US. Even if you used every law enforcement agency to do the confiscation it would take around 380 years to complete. Not including court time or the fact they probably only know where about 1/2 of them are to begin with.

I looked it up and this was the first source I found (but yeah, it might have eventually been banned for that reason -- although I don't see how it was initially approved for use by the EPA if that was the case):

13 Two questions:OVH is a major European hosting company - actually global now; they operate datacenters in North America, Asia, and Australia as well. Last month one of their buildings in Strasbourg burned to the ground destroying all the equipment inside and taking out the power and networking for nearby buildings as well.

Getting approval to disconnect the sprinkler system was a big deal even then. I think these days even if you get approval for a halon system you are generally required to maintain sprinklers as well.

Had an accidental single bottle Halon discharge once while I was steaming the plant.
Other than the damn blaring horns and lights, not too much effect. As the boilers draw external air for combustion through the forced draft blowers, there was very little halon fed into the combustion air stream, Odd smoke color for about a minute, but, we kept on steaming.

Speaking of solid state storage, we have a Street Guardian (Australian firm) HD dashcam with front and rear 1080 cameras on the Volvo, from our days living in Baltimore. The amount of storage now available on a micro-SD card absolutely boggles my mind. I think right now I am running a 512 gig in the slot, and that is rumored to go up in capacity soon, if not already.

I have an old corsair gaming keyboard that has 18 macro keys, now I don't game but I use excel and other applications extensively, so those macro keys are mapped so I can one button press copy, paste, paste special, undo, group, ungroup, etc.
I literally cannot live without this keyboard, which is now discontinued and I've seen it go for upwards of 500 dollars.

When I was working full time for the Fed (US Army) the IT clowns there would schedule maintenance on the weekends. Typically network shit one weekend, server maintenance the other. While you'd think this would make sense, re-racking servers and changing the VLAN they were on required someone from networking to at least be aware of the change.

Yeah, if this keyboard dies I would have to do something.

In my "sunset" years I went into project management for the Army. I was pretty much burned out from being on the working side of IT.
I had built datacenters, servers, run network cables, setup routers, switches and firewalls. I did desktop support, software configuration, etc. I had those mickey mouse certifications from Microsoft, Novell and Apple. The all nighters became the rule when you couldn't do your paid job during the day.

I know it's late and Pixy is dreaming of anime chicks, but I'd love for him to do a series on "DeGoogling" yourself--good replacements for Gmail, etc. that ordinary peons can do. Same with Facebook, etc.
One thing I've noted is that Parler, Gab, etc all seem to have terrible security. Is there anyone competent out there that would actually work on conservative tech stuff?
