Gaming Thread 2/2/2014
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Zakn kinda covered most of what I was going to post about last night so this is a little short and it's video heavy. That being said, even if you don't understand EVE or even videogames in general, this right here is a great read

For the SuperBowl, there are two things to play along with while watching. Fancake (IOS/Android)and CBS Sports PrePlay (IOS/Android). They both cover the same thing so pick your poison. What it amounts to is you pick the plays before they happen and you get points if you're right.

NINTENDO INVESTMENT MEETING

A quick Q&A with Iwata and Nikkei. Main thing to take away from it is that Nintendo might be willing to actually spend some money buying stuff.

In a good will gesture, everyone at the top of Nintendo is taking a pay cut. It will be the second time in three years that Iwata will be cutting his pay due to bad business.

The DLC for the Wii U version of Batman: Arkham Origins has been canceled.

Nintendo announced that DS games will be heading to the Wii U. That may sound okay from a quick reaction point of view but if you owned a DS XL, you will know that the games for that handheld really can't be blown up.

Nintendo also announced that they're getting into the Health industry with non-wearable consumer devices. I don't get it either as it completely goes against the grain with the current market with wearable devices.

• Nintendo did firm up some release dates. Mario Kart 8 is out in May. Super Smash Bros. by the end of the year

NEWS

Microsoft finally bought the Gears of War IP and have set Black Tusk (who were working on a spy based third person game) to make another entry in the series. Do you want another entry in the series is another matter as it kinda petered out after the second game.

Considering their current status of being pretty much dead, it doesn't surprise me that they're shutting down all of their English channels. Sad shame that they've gone this way but it is what it is. Not many companies can claim to have been the best at what they did for 20 years.

• As we're about to get the first Monster Monpiece here in the states, the second game comes out in Japan in a few months. Can't tell what is goofier, the dildo bat in Saints Row or a vibrator sword in this game

• After Testament, I don't know if I want a new Sherlock Holmes game from Frogwares but here is the first trailer for the next entry, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishment

• New footage of Dark Souls 2. Can't wait for this to come out, hopefully it doesn't get crushed in the tidal wave in March.

• A whole ton of new Xbox One rumors last week as someone started singing on NeoGAF:
They're working on a console that has a 1TB HDD but has no disc drive which may tie into another rumor that the console might be getting a price drop later in the year.
Forza Horizons 2 out sometime in September.
First major update is in March (fits with the scheduling that they've used on the 360).
Halo 5 isn't coming out this year but Halo 2: Anniversary Edition is.

Zelda: Four Swords is out now on the 3DS. It's free till the end of the day and if you know others with a 3DS, it's very much worth the download.

• BenK made me hip to this entry from this year's Global Game Jam called Not Everything is Flammable And you know, it's a pretty interesting concept. It's worth the quick download and farting around a few times.

• Good cinematic from Bethesda for the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online

Riot is now touting that their League of Legends is bringing in about 27 million gamers each day.

Harebrained Schemes finally announced the first expansion pack to Shadowrun. It's called Dragonfall and it's out on February 27th

Moody was the next group to set Sony's stock to junk status (Ba1 status to be precise).

• In non-shocking news, Ndemic Creations announced that their award winning Plague Inc. is coming to the PC in a bigger and badder version titled Plague Inc. Evolved

Random Stuff

I did pick up two new (to me and my friends) boardgames this week.

Mice and Mystics which is an interesting co-op story driven RPG-lite. It's pretty interesting in how it blends a full blown story with a gameboard.

And the second game I bought was Tsuro of the Seas. I own the original Tsuro which is a fun tactical abstract tile laying game which is perfect when you want to play a game but don't want to be too tied up in it. This one adds the wrinkle of having sea monsters which adds quite a bit of randomness and speeds up the game and frankly, makes it a bit more fun IMO.

NEW RELEASES

Fable Anniversary (360) - It's Fable but updated. Eh. Don't get me wrong, I liked the game when it came out but it was far surpassed by the second game.

Bravely Default (3DS) - Biggest release of the week. It's Square trying to bring back what they used to do which is fun RPGs. I'm ready to pick up my collector's edition this week.

The LEGO Movie Videogame (PS3, PS4, Wii U, 3DS, 360 and Xbox One) - The glut of LEGO videogames continues.

Fables: A Wolf Among Us Episode 2 (PC, 360, PS3, Vita iOS) - Should this be here as a "new release" probably not but it's been four months since the first episode was released. If you're waiting for the full season before diving in, see you next year.

That's it, I'm out

I liked the first two (more so the second one). They're fun quirky action RPGs that knows when their welcome is about to be worn out

7 Ugh. League of Legends doing better? Barf. A testament to the profitability of cynical, homogenized, and poorly managed products when you give them shiny skins.

8 Anyone here tried Path of Exile yet? It's free to play and has received several Game of the Year awards. I installed it last week and can't stop playing, it's a vast game with some pretty innovative systems. Sure makes Blizzard and their Diablo 3 failure look childish in comparison.

9 Hey gamers. I still haven't picked up AC3 (listen, long story, and the gaming has taken a back seat.) Question: If I buy a used copy (currently like $12 on amazon) does anyone know if I'm going to get screwed by some "One use code thing?" If it's just Multiplayer, whatever, but I'd hate to have a crippled game.

The 3rd one got a bit trying by the end with the "spend all the monies or kill all the people bit." But overall they're fun. I think you're right that the 2nd one had more...stuff (for lack of a better term) but the first one is still quite fun. It'd probably be more fun for someone who didn't have to listen to Molyneux's dribble about it for months before it came out

14 Folks I know who have been in the ESO beta have been...underwhelmed. Though that may be due to a community that so far seems to be made up of WoW rejects, which never helps. SOE's Dave Georgeson has been talking about dripping small patches and content out over the course of the year instead of big updates every couple of months. I guess that might help with content a touch, but you're never going to overcome the limitations of the theme-park model. Meanwhile, EQNext alpha has begun, or rather the Landmark alpha. My buddy who's in on that stage has the sole complaint of the servers not being up long enough...also, the available land was all claimed in notime! Looks like more land area will be incoming...but hey, that's what alpha's for, amiright...?

Assassin's Creed does have the Game Key that gets registered to an Ubi-Soft U-Play account.  No clue on if its possible to decouple it from an account and resell the key.  And I have no clue on how that all acts in relation to a console, since I play on PC.

well PC is still through Uplay like all of their games on the PC but it on the consoles is a free download and you don't need a code to get it

25 Just picked up Arma 3... First person shooter that is gorgeous... but with a STEEP learning curve as I did not play the first two.... Funny part is that I used to be a big WW2 Online player, years ago... and saw many names on Armas boards I recognized.... May have to call a few friends and see if we can restart the old 'French Resistance' movement that the WW2 online bigwigs hated.... LOL...

28 Hey, y'all. I have a question. My son wants to record what's he's playing on the XBox. We have a Dazzle for capturing video, but need something else so that the output from the XBox can go both to the TV and the Dazzle. Or thru the Dazzle to the PC, as it were. Various videos say you need 3 "audio video splitter cables". Can find lots of audio splitter cables but that's not the same...or is it? And Amazon has what is supposedly an AV splitter box which might be what we need... I'm a former computer techie, but have always left the AV stuff to others, so I'm over my head here. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

It's currently engrossing, but, like the first Borderlands, I suspect the replay value is pretty low. Then again, I've not done multiplayer on either.

The one thing that irks me is that--despite all of the damn tweaks available via the game menu, console, and .ini files--Gearbox *still* won't provide a HUD transparency adjustment slider for us folks with plasma TVs. This time around, though, I can just adjust the position and size of the HUD (*that* capability is present) before each session which largely mitigates the image retention problem.

30 Couldn't pass up the savings on the ESO 'Imperial Edition' so I've already got mine preordered. Myself and my fellow band of WoW rejects will be moving into that after spending time in Rift. We tried GW2 as well, but that just didn't stick. Been on a gaming binge lately to catch up with the series I'd fallen behind in due to the aforementioned WoW addiction. Went through the entire Assassin's Creed series and then the Dead Space trilogy. Picked them all up super cheap during the winter sales, and AC IV came with the new video card, while Dead Space 1 and 3 were in that massive EA bundle. Some great gaming out there, can't believe it had taken me this long to really sink my teeth into AC.

33 First, great post.  It has to take a lot of time and effort to put together the gaming post every week, and I always read.

But the hole here... and maybe it's me just missing it... but there isn't any effort to gather the Horde to game together.

Like I said, I know it's a lot of work to build this thread every week, but... It's not something I can't read on my own through other sources.

Maybe focus it to the 'rons and 'ettes a bit?

Just constructive feedback, not trying to be a jerk.

34 Posted by: tangonine at February 02, 2014 05:05 PM (x3YFz) There are Horde guilds on a couple MMORPGs (I run both Horde and Alliance guilds on WoW) but it's amazingly difficult to get enough 'Rons and 'Ettes together to *do* anything. Guess we're the proverbial herd of cats.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at February 02, 2014 01:12 PM (GDulk)

35 pretty much what Polliwog said. Throw in the fact that I don't know what is active and what not it kinda becomes a pain (we tried doing it a year ago and it quickly went to the wayside). Rather people stick with what they've been doing for guilds/corps/alliances/whatever instead of being in something that may or not not have any activity.

I would need but I guess we could have a list of chat rooms in games where the horde can talk to each other

Posted by: The Dude at February 02, 2014 01:21 PM (bStrg)

36 Also wish I could go back to talking esports but I can't crack the nut to talk about it to people who don't follow themselves :/

What is the input on the Dazzle? The HDMI splitter I picked up on a whim was nearly free (thus the whim) because it was HDMI 1.3 and was being replaced with a model that did 1.4. For most purposes this doesn't matter.

Here is one on Amazon for $20:
http://tinyurl.com/o5k9lw5

You can find VGA splitters for around the same price.

Posted by: The Dude at February 02, 2014 01:53 PM (bStrg)

52 If it's the old Dazzle for capturing NTSC video, it can be made to work if you have the right cable for the Xbox. The problem is that it's going to look awful.

There is a newer model that will work with component video up to 1080i. That would be the minimum for capturing Xbox output without severe loss of quality.

Posted by: Epobirs at February 02, 2014 02:03 PM (bPxS6)

53 ESO is a disappointing prospect to me - they first stated that the 3 factions were raced based and could not be set to open because "reasons" and "design" - but this last week, they announced their preorders would be granted the ability to do just that. Just the preorders, no one else - would be able to play any race in any faction - like The Elder Scrolls games usually allow. Their "reasons" and "design choices" were "lies". So until they open up all races to all factions for everyone, it's gonna be a game I ignore.
