Maybe You Will Have Marco Rubio to Kick Around Anymore
— Ace

Over at Hot Air, some are taking a second look at Rubio.

I liked his speech calling out Tom Harkin and the useful idiots on Cuba and Venezuela, but this does seem like too quick a bout of forgiveness. There might be some Cheap Date-ism going on in the party.

Meanwhile, a New Republic writer admits that Romney's much-media-derided "geopolitical foe" statement about Russia "seems exactly right."

Bonfire of the Vanities: Mead has a column up at The American Interest about how Crimea weakens Obama.

Facts destroy theory, every time.

WashingtonÂ’s flat-footed, deer-in-the-headlights incomprehension about RussiaÂ’s Crimean adventure undermines President ObamaÂ’s broader credibility in a deeply damaging way. If he could be this blind and misguided about Vladimir Putin, how smart is he about the Ayatollah Khameni, a much more difficult figure to read? President Obama is about to have a difficult meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu in which he will tell Netanyahu essentially that Israel should ground its national security policy on the wisdom of President Obama and his profound grasp of the forces of history. The effect will be somewhat undermined by President ObamaÂ’s failure to understand the most elementary things about Vladimir Putin.

With Hitler-style lies blasting from the well-tuned Russia propaganda machine (attacks on ethnic Russians! mass flight of refugees! fascism!) and armed soldiers backing up thugs in Crimea and elsewhere, President Putin is not exactly looking like a partner for peace at the moment—and Obama’s decision to work with him isn’t making President Obama look like a foreign policy genius.

Prime Minister Netanyahu—and many other world leaders—will be looking at President Obama with cold and calculating eyes. They can see that he turned to Russia for help when his Syrian red line policy collapsed; they can see that he is betting heavily that Russia will help him with Iran, both in the negotiations and at the UN Security Council. They observe how Washington was flabbergasted and stunned by the events in Ukraine, and they are likely to conclude that President Obama’s Middle East policy is in much worse shape than he thinks.

Both friends and foes are also probably thinking today that President Obama is going to have less control over the future of American foreign policy than he might like.

54 It's going to be really hard to dislodge from my craw what Rubio originally did.

He went on English-speaking network TV news interviews to talk about the amnesty plan, and said, "Of COURSE we are not going to give these people the vote and government benefits right away. It will be a very lengthy process."

Then with near simultaneity he went on Spanish-language Univision for an interview and said, "Of COURSE you get the vote and government benefits right away!"

This business of saying one thing in one language and then saying something quite different or utterly contradictory in another language -- and then claiming to have been mistranslated if caught at it -- is an extremely disreputable habit.

It was a favorite trick of Yasser Arafat, for example. He would give morning speeches talking to the world media in English about "a peaceful two-state solution" and then in the afternoon talk to his Palestinian audience in Arabic, swearing that the long-range goal was still to "push the Jews into the sea".

56 It's not just that he was wrong on the issue, although that is certainly enough. It's that he jumped in with both feet, joining the McCain/Grahamnesty/Jeb wing in what looks like from the outside like a very naive move. When you are trying to build a coalition, why throw in with a group that won't even concede the good faith differences on your own side. It's enough for Schumer to attribute all conservative opposition as "teh racism," why join in with the soft R's who say the same thing. Conservatives are tired of Rove, Jeb, McCain saving their harshest vitriol not for the Dems, but for conservatives/tea party types.

The GOP thinks they've been dealt a huge winning hand.  They don't have to do ANYTHING because Obamacide is so bad.  They're so confident of this, they've decided to focus on something their big money donors want; amnesty.  They're focusing on that because hey, awesome hand, and what are the voters going to do?  Vote for Democrats who also love amnesty?

110 Ace sez: I liked his speech calling out Tom Harkin and the useful idiots on Cuba and Venezuela, but this does seem like too quick a bout of forgiveness. I think that speech was more significant that you're given credit for here. Rubio's speech confirms without doubt that he just gets it when it comes to communism and the American left. He has them totally nailed. And he's not afraid to call them out on it. Based on that alone, a Rubio administration would be infinitely - -and I do mean INFINITELY -- better than the Obama administration, and near-infinitely better than a Hillary administration. Is Rubio perfect? No. Is ANY polician perfect? No. But his sins and variations from perfect orthodoxy seem ridiculously minor in the grand scheme of things. He is handsome (way better looking than Obama), young (nine years younger than Obama, thus will be younger in 2016 than Obama was when he took office), 100% on-point correct on at least 80% of issues, and is very electable. Who are we waiting for? Some magical perfect candidate? Doesn't exist. I'd vote for Rubio in a heartbeat, as would almost all conservatarians given the alternative of Hillary -- and so would most LIVs simply because he's dreamy and has an ethnic last name. LEAVE MARCO ALONE!

This.

With the heat of a thousand blazing suns.

That family have had two bites at the apple. Two Bushes have been President.

Neither one governed in anything like an actually conservative way. And both left such a foul taste in the mouths of the electorate that each one was succeeded by a two-term Democrat who accomplished big liberal goals. In both cases, a sketchy Democrat with baggage, who probably wouldn't have been elected save for the damage to the GOP brand each one of those Bushes accomplished.

Now the money men (fresh off their 2012 triumph with the Romneybot) are talking about this Bush crap yet _again_? I don't have enough hands to perform a facepalm of the required magnitude.

121 BERLIN, MAR 3: German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has warned against excluding Russia from the prestigious Group of Eight leading industrialised countries in reaction to Moscow’s role in the tensions rocking Ukraine. His comment came yesterday after US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Moscow as it risked losing its G8 seat over the Ukraine crisis. “The G8 panel is the only panel where we Westerners talk directly to Russia, so should we really sacrifice this only panel?” Steinmeier said on public German television ARD. Steinmeier said heads of government would debate the issue this week, but cautioned against any steps that could worsen the crisis. “I think we must see how to contribute to a de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine,” he said.

I'll do what I advised all the Romney haters to do last time - go vote for him then get drunk and take a very long shower.  Is he better than Hillary?  Sure.  But he's still a lying little s***, and I don't have to like it, and I won't be enthusiastic about his campaign.  My guess is that he'd look better in a pantsuit than Hillary, though.

I get tired of this question.

It is NOT 2016 yet. A great deal can -- and undoubtedly will -- happen before then, and it is the height of lunacy to attack yourself to one of the "likely" candidates now, unless you're nothing more than a political fanboi who wants to be sure Your Side wins the election, no matter what the cost.

If the election was today, I suspect the choice would be between Choom Boy and Choom Boy. Maybe someone will finally screw up the courage to blow the whistle on the America-hating fuck before what I fear actually plays out, but right now there's too much Poppin' Fresh-style "fairness" out there getting in the way of courage.

If we have a real election in '16, I'll look at who indicates a desire to be president, and make my choice in the primary and general elections.

But not before.

I realize that you can never be 100% happy with any candidate and you try to get as close to that mark as possible. But Amnesty is such a fundamental issue and such a political loser for the party and the country that I just cannot ignore it, no matter how brilliant, cutting and passionate his takedown of Harkin and the Dems were. And as good as it was, he could have really nuked the American left from the well of the Senate, but he held back. For me, Rubio is still radioactive.

Posted by: Marcus T., who has just about had it. at March 03, 2014 12:21 PM (GGCsk)

238 I would vote for anyone vs Dem.

Rubio has more good qualities than bad.

Jeb may have this as well, being Barb's son, but no, thank you, Jeb. I do not want another Bush.

While I would like a President Cruz, a Trey Gowdy, a man of fire... or, maybe (jury still out on everything due to his own father) Rand Paul...I am ok with Rubio. Bite moi. I was also very ok with President Romney and do think he would have been a good leader, focused on the economy, as well as their family bringing class back to the White House vs swag. I took a lot of heat on this blog for being a Perry turned Romney girl, and too freaking bad.

I am a realist Republican. This Rino throwing crap has not worked in two elections. When the people vs the Democrats unite, they will get somewhere and maybe, in 2014, if the Senate races go red, Obamacare can be repealed. That should be the focus: the Senate and House races, not the election of 2016.

If I have to weigh the good qualities with all of the bad (Dems) then I will vote for whoever is the last man standing. It is politics, not my marriage.

That said, I will not ever vote for anyone pro-choice...that is the hill I will die on. Because pro-choice is late-term Gosnell and I want no part of infanticide.

I want the current immigration laws enforce before a similar fubar of Obamacare does the same with a new law. Senator Rubio knows this as he has heard from me. I honestly think once people go to DC they are threatened and bullied by special interest groups. I don't know, but time will tell if he flips again. He knows he has a lot to overcome from the mess he made.

Considering the fraud of Medicare and Medicaid was not attempted to be fixed first, before the vast left-wing Democrat document known as Obamacare was forced down our gullets, no, do not want a new and comprehensive immigration law from any part. Enforce the law and secure the borders first.

241 I'm not sure that the application of purity tests is going to do us much good in 2016.

Democrats can get away with being publicly for a popular policy, but doing nothing to help it become law, while telegraphing to their base that they're really, secretly behind the scenes working to undermine it - see, for example, Obama opposing gay marriage in 2008 and the balance of his first term. This is a tremendous tactical advantage they have - duping the moderates and centrists while promoting far left positions on the ground.

Is it beyond the realm of possibility that Rubio is playing this game, or has been dealt this hand after actually attempting to reform immigration and being convinced that it can't work? I mean, is it at least possible that he'd be a Manchurian candidate like the Democrats have all the time, allowing the centrists/moderates/one-issue Hispanic voters to think he'll push through an immigration bill that they'd like in order to get elected (hell, Obama did as much without addressing the issue in any way until after 2010)?

248 Rubio is back in my good graces, moslty because he has quietly attended to Senate business and avoided John McCain ever since The Giant Fuck-Up. But he's a Senator and America doesn't like people in Congress right now. The nominee will be a governor, since 20 Mule Team Borax is no longer sponsoring TV westerns and the spokesperson for that show is therefore unavailable to be President. Scott Walker is my current horse race leader. Mitch Daniels might jump back in, I hear, but I still think his wife's adventures with the motorcycle gang will keep him out. Why would she want to through herself to the Democrat wolves? (Of course, why would anyone?) Anyway, whomever is willing to have their middle school bullying exposed, or their propensity to give the dog a little fresh air on family trips, and then mercilessly mocked by the ignorant and vindictive propagandists is my hero. If the press adored Obama, and they do, then the Hillary adulation will approach religious ferocity. Already we see assholes in the press saying in print that opposing Hillary is mysoginistic. Just keep Jeb Bush away. Make him Chief of Staff if he's so damn good.

YOU THOUGHT BARACK OBAMA WAS A GOOD IDEA.

Really, instead of allowing them to pontificate, I want to have them go stand outside in the cold rain with big red clown noses on and sing five hundred iterations of the Very Sorry Song from _Calvin and Hobbes_. And pledge to never vote again, since they cocked it up so badly before.

Either kibosh the Dems vote or find an alternate or settle for smaller fry Actually, I don't think it would take long for the GOP to start winning. As I mentioned upthread, all they'd need to do is get on the same page with the rest of the country. One poll after another shows how detached this administration is from the concerns of the average American. Just start talking real numbers on the economy, and how they're far worse now because of Leftarded overregulation, for starters. Hammer the economy, that's a big-tent issue that has affected pretty much everybody, and not in a good way.

336 Funny how so many people voted for Obama based on his statements, which were proved to be demonstrably false and naive, but most people can't conceive a Republican doing the converse.

Honestly, this is politics. All of a sudden the new yardstick is some kind honest, forceful articulation of conservative bona fides. Not a simple appeal that would resonate with enough of the electorate to get....elected.

Rubio made great remarks  on a topic that should be a regular piñata for Republicans.  The fact that it is so rare as to almost warrant praise is pathetic.

He did a good job shooting fish in a barrel.  He COULD  do the same on immigration, but chose another path.

338 Jeb may have this as well, being Barb's son, but no, thank you, Jeb. I do not want another Bush. = Rubio's last name may as well be Bush. He is not his own man. He represents the progressive neoconservative agenda. Rubio is a "for it before I was against it" fellow. I expect that he adheres to that fat cherub "architect" Rove's advice. There are those few proving themselves accountable, and they do work with Rubio as well all contingencies of the Republican Party Big Tent (but not big enough for libertarian-republicanism). Perhaps they've embraced his remade image, providing him the opportunity to play the victor. Anyway, of course I'd vote Rubio over any Democrat. But there we go again, placating the neoconservative insiders because they cry "electability" vs. "purism" -- pfft, false premise. Champion the candidate that stands on the same platform you cherish. Don't think you'll be given room to stay in the insiders' ark, no matter how pleasant the package when you respond with your vote, hoping for the best, selling out AGAIN. Substance, content first.

339 Even if there's little Obama can do about the situation, it is only aggravated by the fact that he didn't (wouldn't) see it coming and comes off like a pansy.  However, the feckless League of European Nations Union has no concept of a response other than throwing diplomatic tantrums.  Frankly, I'm up for dissolving NATO.  Maybe then the Euro wienies might wake up to the fact that they can't keep waiting for the Amis to come sailing across the ocean to pull their chestnuts out of fires they failed to extinguish when small.

415 196 Obama will long be remembered as the man who lost the Ukraine. Only problem is most of his voters don't know where it is, nor can they spell it. === YouCrane?

416 274 In the general election, YOU VOTE YOUR CANDIDATE, even holding your nose, or suffer the consequences of being ruled by communist madmen. Posted by: zombie at March 03, 2014 04:21 .I hear you. But I've done that too many times. When is my voice heard? Posted by: Minnfidel Your voice is heard in the primaries. That is your opportunity to nominate a conservative who matches your ideology. If you fail to do so, then reality is reality is reality, and in the general election you either vote for a compromised semi-conservative, or a raving communist, or waste your vote with some write-in or whatever, or don't vote. (Those last two options are half-votes for the communist.) Politics really and truly is the art of compromise. Neither side gets what they want most of the time. As much as we complain, we actually have thwarted many of Obama's insane schemes and forced him to make compromises. (Do you really think they preferred the monstrosity of ObamaCare? Of course not. The wanted single-payer. ObamaCare is their compromise.) Right now, across the left, they're all whining about what a disappointment Obama has been, and scheming to get a REAL hardcore leftist into office, maybe like Squaw Warren. And when that fails, the left's activists will feel cheated and betrayed and say "When is our voice heard?" If you want a true conservative president, work to get one nominated in the primaries. If he gets through to the general election, then vote for him there too. But if he DOESN'T make it to the general election, and you are faced with a squishy semi-conservative vs a hard-left loon, do you really want to "show the country how bad it can be under Democrats' misrule" on the gamble that eight years hence the country in disgust will elect a true conservative to undo the damage? With the media in control and spinning everything? With the left's white noise blame machine in full swing? In eight years, there will be different issues, unforeseeable now. It's ridiculous to throw away a decade of history on the gamble that you MIGHT later get a decade in return.

Posted by: zombie at March 03, 2014 04:21 PM (mizYg) At this point, i'm thinking that Michael Dukkakis might have been the better choice back in 1988. At that point in history, enough sensible people were still alive to see what a goddawful fucking mess he would have made of everything, and conservatives wouldn't have been tarred with the stupid (Kinder gentler) polices of George HW Bush. Sometimes if you make things bad enough, people figure out there *IS* a problem. Posted by: D-Lamp See comment #416 above.

Not really, zombie.

Unless you're in one of the 'Early Primary' states...the choice has already been made for you.

I really hate the way our primaries are done.

The only fair thing would be to have all the primaries on the same day.

422 Puff up Rubio, Ryan, Christie (before he burned his bridges), Romney, Giuliani, etc., all you'd like, Ace. Not voting for him. No matter how many foreign policy or Democrat party distractions you throw out as chum. Will. not. vote. for another big government fraud. And I'm not alone.

Posted by: MlR at March 03, 2014 04:03 PM (BYsxT)

423 I don't think Rubio has done anything to disqualify himself as a potential candidate. There's not one single candidate that everyone can agree on 100%. To disqualify a person forever over one single issue, when he agrees with you on 95% of every other issue, makes you seem stupid. If you don't vote, you're going to guarantee Hillary will be Prez, who you agree with 0% of the time. I'll take the guy I agree with 90% of the time, thank you.

424 It would be nice if those who supported Rubio would actually take responsibility for being easily lead, but it'll always be someone else's fault.

"And I'm not alone."

A) We keep losing primaries and end up with RINOs.  What's wrong with them!?
B) We keep losing primaries and end up with RINOs.  What's wrong with us!?

Keep picking A, bro.  It's totally not getting old and totally not leading to people ignoring you.

425 I liked his speech calling out Tom Harkin and the useful idiots on Cuba and Venezuela, but this does seem like too quick a bout of forgiveness. There might be some Cheap Date-ism going on in the party.

Talk is cheap, crossing over and supporting Democrats on amnesty is not.

426 Tom Harkin is not a useful idiot. He is a useless idiot.
