NYC Mayor De Blasio, The People's Candidate, Begins His War on Charter Schools
— Ace

Three charter schools had been granted "co-location" permits by Bloomberg -- permitting them to set up shop in the unused parts of already-existing public schools.

De Blasio, "The People's Candidate," is suddenly canceling that permission, giving the three charter schools little time at all to find new places to teach. It's already March, and these schools thought they had classrooms for September. But now they don't, because De Blasio says he doesn't want to "rush" these decisions.

Gee, I wonder why he'd do something like this.

Andrew Malone, principal of Success Academy Harlem Central, which is no longer approved to co-locate next year, told me he doesn’t know what his school is going to do. “It’s terrifying,” he says. “For the families, it is already nearly March. To be given no warning that the school is closing makes it impossible for them to find another option, and for the majority, unfortunately, their zone schools are failing.”

...

Considering New York City’s sky-high rent process, [a charter school called] Success will most likely close — a shame, given that it’s lived up to its moniker.

“We are a very high-performing school,” Malone says, noting that last year his sixth graders had the highest pass rate in the entire state of New York on the state math tests and that both sixth and fifth grades had the No. 1 academic achievement ranking in the borough of Manhattan in 2012.

The Harlem-based school also serves traditionally underprivileged communities — the students come from either upper Manhattan or the Bronx. Ninety percent are black, 10 percent Hispanic; 80 percent receive either a free or reduced-priced lunch.

“Just in the last 48 hours it is has been extremely challenging just seeing the children’s faces,” Malone says. “To tell them we won’t exist next year even when we are extremely successful is hard to swallow.”

Fapoumata Kebe, the mother of three children currently attending Success charter schools, would rather homeschool her children then send them to a traditional district school.

“They want my children to go to a school that is not performing well,” she says. “If they do that, I want to homeschool my children, because I want them to have a chance to succeed.”

Indignant at the surprise decision, Kebe thinks de Blasio is the cause of her children’s uncertain future. “What de Blasio wants to do is to take the children who are succeeding and take them from that school that is performing perfectly to send them to a school that is not good at all,” she says.

If these schools were failing, De Blasio and his union stooges wouldn't see them as a threat. In fact, they'd probably offer them tax subsidies, were they failing.

31 It is payback to the Unions and for political power. The teachers as a whole, don't care about the kids, they care about their rice bowl. The various locals of the NEA show their true colors every time. They care about taking care of their own interests, which is about political power, and their own members, pensions and wages. The very existence of the charter schools is an existential threat to them. It is definitely not "for the children". It is for the Party.

39 The real reason is that Charter schools often has customized curricula that focuses on actual academics and not on Marxist brainwashing like in public schools. People like De Blasio hate charter schools not because they'e successful schools but rather because they don't indoctrinate as intensely as public schools. it's the same reason they oppose homeschooling. Note that the left back in the '50s and (at least the first half of the) '60s was against public schools because they were thought to promote conformism to '50s Americana ideals. Once the left took over education, suddenly schools are cool again. Because they now control what is "taught."

Buddy of mine is very involved in Cleveland charter schools.  Fun fact, Cleveland spends $19K/year/pupil on its public schools.

That, I can tell you with great confidence, will pay the freight at a top private college preparatory school in a tony Connecticut town.

I'm amazed at how hard they have to work to squander that much money and fail to teach anything.  (Cleveland public schools, if it needs to be said, really really suck).

62 We are learning that concepts about advanced planning and preparation are foreign concepts to liberals. While de Blasio may have done this with the intent to cause harm, the typical liberal follower of this sort of tyranny are oblivious to the pernicious effect it has on the children and on those who plan the educational programs necessary to support the children. This is just another example, like the continuously moving dates for Obamacare, where liberals think that their capricious course changes have no effect on the people involved, and it's only a matter of the affected people making immediate changes themselves. They really have no clue how damaging their policies are.

93 The Harlem-based school also serves traditionally underprivileged communities — the students come from either upper Manhattan or the Bronx. 109 De Coomio's son Dante goes to Brooklyn Technical Highschool: The Charter: Brooklyn Technical was instituted by a New York State legislative mandate and is open to all students of the City of New York by competitive examination. Its mission is to inspire and challenge potentially high achievers to maximize their talents for the benefit of society. The Goals: Provide an environment for educational, social and emotional growth in which students with superior scholastic aptitudes can develop their intellectual gifts and become committed to an examination of ethical approaches to solve world problems. Provide an environment for the research and development of innovative and interdisciplinary approaches in the areas of mathematics, science, engineering, computer science and the liberal arts. Attract and challenge outstanding educators to guide students in achieving the highest standard of academic excellence. Prepare our students for leadership and professional roles at the university level and in our society, with an awareness of social responsibility to the community. So in a nutshell: It is a publically funded Charter School in a way, not open to the common rift raft that make learning difficult in public schools

132 39 The real reason is that Charter schools often has customized curricula that focuses on actual academics and not on Marxist brainwashing like in public schools. Because they now control what is "taught." Posted by: zombie at March 03, 2014 04:49 PM (mizYg) -------------------------- THIS. 254 Needless to say I didn't vote for this guy. But that's not my main point. I actually think that many of us are too clever by half in playing "follow the money" with this guy. Understand that DeBlasio is an ideologically driven, American-value hating True Believer. He also shares the same, weird protean identity thing with the TOTUS (multiple names, uncertain and shifting background) --which is an interesting topic in itself. But rather than this being small "p" political payback, I think this is more that he actually believes that its wrong to make something better for someone, if you don't also help everyone, as in "did you bring enough chewing gum for EVERYBODY.." That, and Charter Schools make an evil "profit" with "our" (communitarian) dollars --as compared to the thousands bureaucrats at the Board of Ed who apparently get paid in shiny beads. But trust me, he sees no contradiction in that. I can only hope that he is such a manifest idiot as to set back the Commie brand a few decades. Not holding out too much faith in the electorate though. Oh look, Martini time.

266 What CNN won't tell you, and because Bob Beckel is stupid-- Remember this: The Ukrainian presidential election, 2004 was held on October 31, November 21 and December 26, 2004. The election was the fourth presidential election to take place in Ukraine following independence from the Soviet Union. The last stages of the election was contested between the opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko and the incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych from the Party of Regions. The election was held in a highly charged political atmosphere, with allegations of media bias, voter intimidation and a poisoning of candidate Yushchenko that was later confirmed to be the result of dioxin poisoning. [...] a run-off ballot between the two-highest polling candidates, Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovych, was held on November 21. According to official Central Election Commission results announced on November 23, the run-off election was won by Viktor Yanukovych. The election results were challenged by Viktor Yushchenko and his supporters with many international observers claiming that the election was rigged. ************* One of Yushchenko's goals? Ukraine joining NATO.

And I think honestly, as we now know about veterans who return, [he] was going through physically and mentally a lot…. He was an alcoholic, and my mother and father broke up very early on in the time I came along, and I was brought up by my mother's family—that's the bottom line—the de Blasio family."[10] In September 2013, de Blasio revealed that his father committed suicide in 1979 while suffering from incurable lung cancer.[11]

332 On FakeAPedia there's a de Blasio quote on the subject. He said he put the name on his diploma and it felt like the right identity. Right. A composite. Like the JEF uses. Or Wendy Davis. *** So when I discover something about myself that I don't like much or think could be improved, I could just re-invent myself into a fantasy projection of my own choosing? All that working to improve myself and learning more about, or exercising the weaker areas of my mind or practicing something were just a silly waste of time? Well butter my biscuits and call me Scooter! I've been doing it all wrong.

"Uh Nanny Bloomby is a totalitarian democrat in all but name. "

I wasn't a fan of Bloomberg in his third term.  His positions on gun control and 20 oz sodas are risible.  But he should get credit for being a prudent manager of a sometimes difficult to govern city.

Now some of you may not like cities, but you'd have to grant that NYC has been mostly well run for 20 years.  In 1990 you'd been laughed at if you were told that in 2013 NYC would have its lowest murder rate in history.  Compare Chicago, which will go broke any day now.

NYC schools continue to have issues, but we have several of the best public high schools in the country.

To those who say "run away" I say no friggin way.  I've just begun to fight.

DiBlasio has already started to hang himself.  Because it's one of their backyards, maybe MSM will start to pay attention.
