It's rare that a large commercial jet goes completely missing but it has happened. Just over ten years ago a 727 took off from Angola and has never been seen since.
On May 25, 2003, shortly before sunset, Padilla boarded the company's Boeing 727-223, tail number N844AA. With him was a helper he had recently hired, John Mikel Mutantu, from the Republic of the Congo. The two had been working with Angolan mechanics to return the 727 to flight-ready status so they could reclaim it from a business deal gone bad, but neither could fly it. Mutantu was not a pilot, and Padilla had only a private pilot's license. A 727 ordinarily requires three trained aircrew.
According to press reports, the aircraft began taxiing with no communication between the crew and the tower; maneuvering erratically, it entered a runway without clearance. With its lights off and its transponder not transmitting, 844AA took off to the southwest, and headed out over the Atlantic Ocean. The 727 and the two men have not been seen since.
Most likely the men ended up crashing it but no wreckage was ever found. And in the years since then neither the plane nor its parts have ever appeared on the aviation market.
'Snools Rule': Mary Daly and the Radical Feminist School of Atrocious Writing
You just might be an oppressing snool and not even know it. From our favorite anti-PIVer:
Women's situation is more complex since we are oppressed by all the different classes of men who are the originators and subjects of patriarchal snooldom.
Apparently snool is a term that Mary Daly brought back from obscurity and seems to have used as synonym for low level henchmen of the patriarchy...I think. It's hard to say since Daly wrote in a Red Queen word-salad style where word meanings changed from sentence to sentence.
The would-be preventers of this retrieval of gynergy, the ghosts/ghouls that want our movement dead, are snools. The noun snool (Scottish) means "a cringing person". It means also "a tame, abject, or mean-spirited person" (OED). In sadosociety, snools rule, and snools are the rule. . . . Snools are sadism and masochism combined, the stereotypic saints and heroes of the sadostate. . . .
Snools appear and re-appear in various forms. . . . Among the henchmen required for the smooth operation of fixocracy are the cocks, danglers, pricks, and flashers who keep girls and women intimidated. Necessary also are the fakes, framers, frauds and hucksters whose job is to manufacture and spread delusions. Heavier work is assumed by rakes, hacks, rippers and plug-uglies. . .
So is this an example of wanton snoolism ?
The Air Force seems serious about really killing off the A-10 this time.
The five-year scheme retires all of the roughly 340 A-10 Warthog attack jets in the active Air Force, Air Force Reserve and state-controlled Air National Guard. The Warthogs account for the majority of the planned warplane cuts.
The twin-jet, gun-armed A-10s disappear from their main active-duty strongholds in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and South Korea in 2015 and 2016. Reserve and Guard squadrons in Arizona, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Maryland surrender their A-10s more gradually between 2015 and 2019.
Stephen Green points out that there doesn't seem to be any obvious gain in getting rid of the A-10.
We'll be replacing the low-cost/high-survivability/highly-effective A-10 with high-cost/lower-survivability/less-effective F-16s in the ground-strike role. Then the F-16s will be replaced by the stupid-cost/lower-survivability/unknown-effectiveness F-35.
Details on the ATF's Raid on Ares Armor
Apparently EP Armory made their '80%' epoxy lowers by first molding the FCG pocket from one kind of plastic and then casting the rest of the lower around it using a different kind of plastic. The ATF has believes that the way the they're making the 80% lowers constitutes a 100% firearm with a plug in it which means that anyone selling them (Ares) as 80% lowers was in fact selling firearms. It's unclear if EP ever got a Letter of Determination from the ATF. And to be honest it's a bit murky since depending on the exact order of steps and casting technique the EP lowers could in fact be considered 100%.
That doesn't seem to be the case here but then the ATF is known for inconsistency in how it interprets its own rules at times.

There are logistic issues with that, as well as budgetary ones. The Army is taking huge cuts and can't afford to maintain the squadrons. Furthermore, like it or not the A-10 is an old system, and maintenance on them is starting to get expensive.
The real problem was never getting rid of the A-10, it was the lack of a dedicated replacement in the pipeline ten years ago.

The Army should bring back the Army Air Corps. Like the Marines have Marine pilots, the Army should have their own. They've got rotary wing pilots, why not ground-air support pilots?
I can remember when the Air Force was just going to be missiles.
Or the Navy was just going to have missiles for carrier and task force cover.
That didn't work out. So why do they think that we'll never need ground air/ anti tank support planes?

The F-35 will never be able to get below ten thousand feet in anything but the most permissive of environments.
There are many stories of A-10s getting stitched up with everything including full scale 30mm cannon fire from the ground, and a LOT of said fire, and flying safely home. Courtesy of two engines, onboard fire suppression, self-sealing fuel tanks, widely separated twin tails with enough redundant control authority that one can be shot away completely, double hydraulic controls with bone simple mechanical backup, armor everywhere, and a titanium tub for the pilot to sit in.
Whereas the F-35 has, by contrast: one engine. No onboard fire suppression (removed to save weight). No self-sealing tanks. Vulnerable tail control surfaces. Complex fire-risky "fueldraulic" controls with inadequate backup. No armor to speak of. No titanium tub in the cockpit.
The layout of the F-35 is basically unprotected fuel tanks completely encircling one enormous, extremely hot engine. You can figure how well even a rare "magic BB" hit by a rifle-sized round will work out. A single hit from a 30mm explosive shell? Instant fireball. Bye bye.

BBGun, Airgun both are made in long gun and pistol form to learn weapon safety.
Graduate to .22 rifle, .22 pistol
Then on from there with the full size larger caliber weapons.
Plenty of clubs, groups, ranges (depending on where you live) that will assist you in learning.

Good reading and learning as a place to start.
Any activity that has an element of danger/risk should have a certain amount of reading as part of the process.

If you don't have one, you can ask the instructors ahead of time (via email) whether they have something they can loan you. I personally have two day-glo Ruger 10/22s specifically for loaning.

Ok this was thhe question I was hoping to ask in the gun thread:
My 12yo is interested in learning to shoot. What's a good safe fun way to learn for kids?

Appleseed.
When I went a couple of years ago, it was a small class. Me, two other guys, and a homeschooling Russian emigre family all learning together. Mom, Dad, three daughters. Great fun to watch the kids shoot for the first time.

I suspect that this has a lot to do with why the Obama crew are trying to get rid of the A-10. Paying off elements of their base.
For as long as I can remember, the progtard left have been absolutely obsessed with the fact that the A-10 gun shoots DEPLETED URANIUM projectiles.
Deadly toxic radiation murdering Mother Earth eleventy!
I've actually read screeds about how the ammo for the gun is made from nuclear power plant waste (it's not), to deliberately wreak cancer havoc on innocent brown-skinned villagers, because Capitalism. Or because Imperialism. Or something something.
Come to think of it, wouldn't actually making ammo out of nuclear waste be a brilliant idea? Sure would get around Harry Reid and Obama having done away with the (extremely expensive federally funded hole in the ground) Yucca Mountain waste repository.
Instead, we'll just make the A-10s into robot drones and go shoot off all of the waste as a big fireworks show in Trashcanistan just before leaving. Bye! Hope you didn't plan to be growing any opium poppies in that soil!

CalFire fly a couple of Vietnam-veteran OV-10 Broncos. Beautiful aircraft.
Not as drop aircraft. The incident commanders use them to figure out how best to route the actual drop aircraft relative to the fire and the terrain. (Around here, the drop tankers are scary old PV-2 Neptunes that are way older than even the Broncos.)
The insane thing about the Bronco is that you can actually stuff a couple of parachutists in a little compartment at the rear. Pull up steeply to dump them out.
Apparently was a classic airshow trick, though I never have seen it done. Drop the hidden parachutists and then tell the crowd the crew bailed out. Oh no! The plane is still flying! No one's at the controls! Look out! Here it comes!
The original intent was to let the plane insert LRRP teams. I always thought it would be neat to repeat that with CalFire smoke jumpers instead.

I know that's the way it is on MeTV on Saturday morning when they show it.
Was it that way in 1959? Here's a quote from IMDB:
"Johnny Cash sang the theme song. Nick Adams wanted his good friend, Elvis Presley, to sing the song but the producers preferred Cash."
There is probably a problem with paying royalties.

torquewrench, CalFire also leases those huge Mars converted seaplanes from Canada, correct? The last flying PB-4Y (naval patrol version of the B-24) is based in AZ and I think also serves as a water-bomber. Saw it at El Centro on Sunday at the Blue Angels' kick-off show, but it was back in WWII livery (actually mostly unpainted bright aluminum); when I first saw it and heard of it at the 2011 centennial of naval aviation at North Island it was in its firefighting paint job of orange and white.
kdabear, you should check out the Planes of Fame airshow in Chino, CA some time (usually in May). Haven't been in a few years, but first time I went in 2007 I think they had over 40 warbirds (WWII aircraft) aloft. At one point did an air parade with all of them - amazing ("the sound of round" as all those radial engines created a massive low rumble). I think that all 4 (5?) flying P-38s were there (escorting two B-25s). I remember a P-38 was helping narrate at that point and choked up - he couldn't believe he'd ever see such a sight again in his life.

AA missiles have gotten better in 35 years. The A-10 is now pretty vulnerable.
It wouldn't do a lot of good against rogue airliners. They have 150 MPH on it.
We need an airplane to fulfill its mission. We should have been working on that 25 years ago. But we developed other needs.
I am accustomed to asking what other aircraft, or mission, you'd rather have the Air Force abandon -- keeping in mind that you need to keep a dogfighter to protect the A-10, if you plan to use it. The real question is, what civilian benefit, education or welfare program, do you think you can get the people of the country to give up, to allow the amount of money they won't pay for this?
Perhaps in your conversations with family and neighbors you might impress on them how much more important this program is than their current favorite. It would certainly be interesting to hear your reports of those encounters.

Yeah, they're kind of slow, but that is by design...allows more time over target, plus it's very maneuverable. I mean, the damn thing can practically turn inside itself.
I was talking to a retired Marine Sargent Major recently who had experience in Iraq and he told me the Jarheads absolutely loved to see the 'Hog' fly over in close air ground support.

Hard to hear that. Sorry for your friend.
I talked at one point with a guy who flew in the Bronco during the Late Unpleasantness in southeast Asia. Flew "in" them as an observer/controller, not as a pilot.
He said, yeah, he would not have wanted to crash, ditch, bail out from, or lose an engine while low and slow in the Bronco, but for the role, once in the air, he said it was brilliant. Quick, wildly maneuverable, excellent visibility. (These are pretty much the reasons why they are being used for fire spotting today.)
Before they put him in the Bronco, his unit flew slower less agile Cessnas for forward air observation, and he said his ass had a permanent pucker from that. He never flew one single flight in the Cessna after the first where he wasn't absolutely convinced that he would die from being shot down. The Bronco was more reassuring.

The carrier combat drone which Northrop Grumman are building for the Navy, the X-47B, looks a whole lot like a miniaturized robot stealth bomber.
(And who built the original B-2 stealth bomber? Hmmmmm, Northrop.)
Its survival strategy for a contested environment without established air superiority is to simply sneak in without being noticed. At which it has pretty good odds.

Biggest danger? Potential midair with the aircraft being followed.
Military jets routinely fly in very close proximity, not least during midair refuelings. And the idea of flying close together to present a single radar return (at least to an unsophisticated civilian radar) is quite classic. The Israelis did this with the strike package en route to blow up Saddam's original nuclear reactor at Osirak in 1981.
But when military jets do this, they all are aware of what they're doing. They carefully coordinate turns and altitude changes. Shadowing someone who doesn't know that you are behind and close to them, and who won't tell you when they are about to do things, is a whole 'nother ball game.

As is the case for all Helicopters and ground troops. If you have not achieved air superiority all these assets are at risk. Cluster munitions and all kinds of bad shit fly above your army if you don't achieve air superiority. The A10 is the cheap survivable tool in the box for close air (loitering) support. Helicopters bring supplies, troops and do some of the A10 duties.

Some fiscal planners have the idea that they can take an airplane capable of defending itself, and add a close air support function to that.
You have to kind of wonder how well that can work, don't you? But those planners are appointed by the executive branch of the government, and they get to say where money goes. They issue orders to the Air Force.

Some of those assets can defend themselves against fixed-wing air threats.
There have been a couple of proposals to stuff advanced air to air missiles into attack helicopters. Helmet cuing and all. There was one that came out of the original Longbow Apache concept, once they realized the radar was capable enough to easily handle the acquisition and handoff for that mission.
It keeps getting de-emphasized from the US side because of the long history of quickly attained US battlefield air superiority. Why fund and train for a mission that won't be needed? Shooting down enemy tacair from F-15s is easier than having Apaches do it.
Meanwhile, after the Cold War ended, one thing that was found out was that the Soviets had been desperate to put air to air capability into Red Army attack helos. Why? A-10.
The Sovs were never able to build an air to air radar small and cheap enough to wedge into the nose of a Hind, or else that might have prominently featured in planning for Fulda Gap scenarios.

777 range varies by model.
It also varies based on the amount of fuel taken on board.
The latter variable is determinative in this case. The amount of fuel the airport handlers' logs say that they loaded then implies a certain max range even under an idealized fuel-conserving flight profile.

I always enjoy the late George Carlin's comparison of baseball versus football and what the two sports tell us about American culture.
"Baseball begins in the spring. When it's getting warm and the world is bursting with new life. Football begins in the fall. When it's getting cold and everything is dying."
"Baseball is a charming 19th century pastoral diversion. Football is a grim 20th century technological struggle."
And goes on from there.

There was this girl in college -- we ended up living together for 2-1/2 years, after which I thought we were practically married....while she thought we were practically single. But I digress.
I spent one summer at her dad's place, which also co-starred her two younger brothers. One time, the youngest had been riding a motorcycle to a friend's down the street (no helmet, no shoes, shorts, T-shirt -- it was just down the street), turned into his friend's driveway and hit a patch of sand and got road-rashed. So he rode back up the hill to the house and was in the garage, sitting on the step into the house, crying from the pain but not going inside because he'd leave bloody footprints....
So I'm inside, eating breakfast, oblivious to all this, and the older brother shows up, throws the door open, and drags the squawking younger brother in through the kitchen, across the living room, into the bathroom, and unceremoniously dumps him in the tub.
Your dad didn't live in SoCal, did he?

One of the reasons cannabis may be close to a schedule 1 now. Is due to govt interference. It was the driving impetus for concentrating THC. The shit now is nothing like what one bought in the 80s.

Anyway, she went in to the jobsite afterwards, thoroughly banged up, and the locals proudly sent her off to the NHS......where she waited for three hours and got a bottle of paracetamol, with dosage instructions that would probably be illegal in the US, because.....paracetamol and acetaminophen are the same drug.
So, despite being ineffective in a great number of people, and having the lowest difference between clinical dose (the dose at which effects are noted) and LD-50 (the dose at which it kills 50% of the people taking it) [and no, I'm not making that up] of any OTC drug.....they're still handing 'em out like candy.
Any regulatory regime that wouldn't ban that crap is worse than useless, IMHO.

From 1998 to 2003, acetaminophen was the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States, with 48% of acetaminophen-related cases (131 of 275) associated with accidental overdose.A 2007 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) population-based report estimates that, nationally, there are 1600 cases of acute liver failure (ALF) each year (all causes). Acetaminophen-related ALF was the most common etiology.2Summarizing data from three different surveillance systems, there were an estimated 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths related to acetaminophen-associated overdoses per year during the 1990-1998 period.3 In a study that combined data from 22 specialty medical centers in the United States, acetaminophen-related liver injury was the leading cause of ALF for the years 1998 through 2003.1 This study also found that a high percentage of cases of liver injury due to acetaminophen were related to unintentional overdose, in which the patient mistakenly took too much acetaminophen. This finding was confirmed in a later study (2007).2 Many other cases of acute liver injury are caused by intentional overdoses of acetaminophen (i.e., associated with self-harm).Across various studies, consumers were found to have taken more than the recommended dose when using an OTC product, a prescription product, or both. The Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS), now named the National Poison Data System (NPDS), which captures data from calls to 61 poison control centers, provides additional data on acetaminophen overdose and serious injury. In 2005, TESS showed that calls about poisoning cases that resulted in major injury numbered 1,187 for OTC single-ingredient products, 653 for OTC combination products, and 1,470 for prescription-opioid combination products.

Carrie Nation and the crowd. The whole "ban stuff" movement was all the rage for a few decades and it included alcohol prohibition. However, rolling back the prohibition movement in the 30's only advanced as far as alcohol. The other ground was ceded permanently, or at least to date.
Cannabis laws are pretty much a 1906-192? phenomena. Cocaine and other drugs were covered by the Harrison Act in 1914. Prohibition -- 1920. Same people, same movement. Remind you of anything you see around you now?

Doesn't the toxic effect on the liver get much more severe when you drink? I seem to remember that on the warning label. But then again, if you're drinking, why take another pain killer? I have the typical aches and pains, but never take anything...many bottles of aspirin have been thrown out for being expired before they are opened, and I have never purchased any other pain reliever. Mostly I buy the aspirin in case guests need it. Posted by: model_1066 at March 18, 2014 03:21 AM (afNM6) Hide posts from (afNM6)
Yes, the toxic effects are worse when you drink....but they're sufficiently bad that they should command respect on their own. And it's a "secret ingredient" in way, way, way, way too many things -- like certain flavors of Alka-seltzer (severe sinus congestion and cough, and possibly others) or Theraflu.
Myself, I reflexively won't have it in my house. If has acetaminophen on the label, I don't buy it -- and if I discover it in my home, I throw it out. I treat it in exactly the same way as I'd treat sugar packets that had a tiny asterisk next to the sugar and "* we're kidding -- it's rat poison." elsewhere.

There are business-response-to-crisis seminars to this day that hearken back to J&J's response to Tylenol tampering [where 7 people near Chicago died from Tylenol adulterated with potassium cyanide in 1982].....but as SFGoth brought in @617, there were 275 cases of acetaminophen deaths in a five-year period WITHOUT the cyanide. In other words, you were almost 40 times more likely to die from acetaminophen being bad shit in the first place as you were to die from it being poisoned.

I'd encourage people to go through the first couple of dozen and see if they don't get hooked -- http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff100/fv00001.htm

Currently, the only web comic I feel compelled to read day it has new material is Girl Genius but then I've been a Phil Foglio fans since the days of Dragon Magazine in the late 70s. I probably spent more time reading Dragon than actually playing any pen and paper RPG. I didn't know too many other people with an interest and was more interested in the design side than the actual playing.

Machinery? Swarf? Oil?
This all sounds terribly industrial.
And as we all know, industry has been banned by government edict here in Northern Commiefornia, as a dire threat to the planet.

One of the things that's funny -- and, again, we just swapped a couple -- is that there's a meta-narrative that Pournelle said good stuff -> he's got people responding and engaging -> he feels like contacting and thanking Pournelle about this response and engagement -> and is telling me, a guy who just sent him an email out-of-the-blue, how awkward it would be to send Jerry an email out-of-the-blue.
Great guy, doing good work, much recommended. Hell, use the website's email to say you heard of him from me.....and he might get awkward about sending me email. </snark>

"Fred" is a Boston Fern that lives outside in the shade when it's nice. During the winter, he comes inside to occupy the shower of the hall bathroom. His scruffy butt got moved outside today, and tomorrow I'll be vacuuming shedding.
There's also "Vern" [Vern the Fern] who is an Australian Sword Fern who actually lives in a pot on our driveway. It's a microclimate better suited to a cactus than a traditional fern, but Vern seems to thrive there.
