Random Thought
— Ace

When you say "That's a good picture of you," isn't that an insult?

You're not saying "You look good." You are instead saying "This artificial, limited representation of you makes you look good, or, at least, better than you actually do in reality."

You have just established that that picture either 1, is misleading in making the subject appear more attractive than in reality, or 2, even if not misleading per se, establishes the upper bound of the subject's possible attractiveness.

If a picture is "good," or, worse yet, "really good," that essentially fixes the uppermost possible level of attractiveness for a subject at that moment and in that light. It's all downhill from there.

You might as well hold up the picture and say, "For good or ill, this is as good as it conceivably gets for you. Deal with it."

This occurred to me because I noticed Joan Walsh's picture on Twitter makes her look average and not awful, as she actually is in reality, and I thought, "That's a good picture of her" in the bad way I mean above.

But it's always actually meant in a bad way.

"That's a horrible picture of you" is, counterintuitively, a more complimentary statement. If I'm in a contest between me myself an a picture, any statement that puts me above the picture is a positive statement. Any statement that puts me below that picture is negative.

36 Pictures, being moments frozen in time, can make even very attractive people look terrible (think DMV photos, if nothing else).  Hell, there used to be a website that had screen caps from news shows/sportscasts and porno movies, and you had to try to guess which was an O-face and which was just someone who looked like hell in a still.  Pretty funny, and amazing how bad some of those stills were.

"You look good in that color" would be taken as a cue to wear it more often, for example, instead of "you sure do look fat in other colors, though." How about "That was an insightful post, Ace" not meaning "but all your other posts are crap?" I read a variant of that somewhere and it really stuck with me.  Compliment the person, not the clothing or whatever.  "You look good in that color" not "That color looks good on you" etc.  It really is amazing what a difference that makes since you are centering the focus on the person, not on the object.  People like that.

Ace,  pass that over here.

My wife is beautiful (to me at least), but she photographs terribly.   If she knows she is being snapped, she gets a goofy fake smile that makes her look funny looking (to me at least).

So when I say that she looks good in the picture, what I am really saying is that "you didnt ruin your natural beauty with your goofy fake smile."

In other words, many times I am commenting on the photo quality (light/exposure/naturalness of the pose, etc) and not the actual appearance of the subject.

Analogy:  Dude, that guitar recording of you is really good.  In no way does this imply that his guitar playing is normally bad, just that the recording is good.

Why the hell am I wasting my time on this post.

"You have this 21st-century plantation that has been out there. Where the Democrat Party has forever taken the black vote for granted and you have established certain black leaders who are nothing more than the overseers of that plantation. And now the people on that plantation are upset because they've been disregarded, disrespected and their concerns are not cared about.

So I'm here as the modern-day Harriet Tubman to kind of lead people on the underground railroad away from that plantation into a sense of sensibility."

I suppose it depends on one's experience but nowadays, any pathetic Facebook, self-pic is pretty loserish so there's no win.

Nah. I think you have some mental aberration on this one. Old time, Brownie Instamatic type photos almost always looked bad, especially that the photographer generally had no clue about lighting, elements, framing, etc.

So if someone said, "that's a good picture of you" it was really more of a commentary on the photographer, generally someone that the subject of the photo knew such as Gramps.

Anymore, even with cameras so much improved and affordable, the photographer screws it all up just the same. I think the saying just hasn't faded as fast as the old photos.

129 One of my lesser know inventions was the "beer lens". The obvious use was to photograph women as they would appear after a few drinks. It was also useful for taking those college passed-out-while-vomiting photos. It makes a guy look like the BMOC, complete with cutlass and cool boots. The unfortunate side affect was that when used to photograph Democrats, then appear as reasonable, scholarly upstanding members of the human race. For this, I am deeply sorry.

132 I disagree. Guys will often bring up the facebook pages of girls they find attractive, to show off to their friends; "Check out this girl I've got a date with for friday night." Often enough, those girls simply don't look as good in their photos as they do in real life. This makes those photos that do represent them fairly the 'good' ones.

Posted by: Waterhouse at August 18, 2011 03:17 PM (EUmWD)

149 Ace, in the spirit of relentlessly overthinking this, consider it this way.

1. There is you, the perfect Ace, unsullied by filters or intermediaries.

2. The camera is an imperfect instrument, with limitations like two-dimensionality and the distortions inherent in passing light through a lens and having it either projected onto film or digitized into bits.

3. Since an imperfect instrument cannot capture the platonic Ace, in all your Aceness, the best we can do is approach a representation of Aceitude.

4. Thus, if somebody says "That's a good picture of you," or words to that effect, what they're actually saying is "with the technology at hand, and bearing in mind that such imperfect technology cannot accurately represent Ace in all his Aceitudinality, that is a reasonably good representation of Aceness."

(I work with philosophers. Can you tell?)

In one of Rush's books (IIRC, it was in "See, I Told You So"), Rush recounted an NYT (?) op-ed by a Princeton professor who postulated that an advanced alien race is waiting patiently for "The Moment", basically when all hell breaks loose environmentally, so that they can take over everything.  That kind of thought (aliens destroying Earth because humans are evil, polluting, war-like animals) has been circulating throughout academia and even in prominent books for decades.

Bruce Coville's "My Teacher is an Alien" series has this as a background threat, that the equivalent of the alien UN sees humanity as a blight on the universe and that we must be destroyed lest we will infect all.

Also, what are the chances that I'm gonna have to shoot at mobs of starving urbanites assaulting my farm if entitlements do get cut?  My father said it happened back in the depression.

232 From Wikipedia High crimes and misdemeanors is a phrase from Section 4 of Article Two of the United States Constitution: "The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors." "High" in the legal parlance of the 18th century means "against the State". A high crime is one which seeks the overthrow of the country, which gives aid or comfort to its enemies, or which injures the country to the profit of an individual or group.

Thing is, "high crimes" is anything Congress says it is. Given the current situation, I think it's going to be pretty difficult to get the Senate to go along with any definition until 2013, when it won't matter.

There is no legal guarantee that he won't be released one day and they did release him in 2005 to go to the place where his father's ashes were scattered, while solely in the company of hospital staff. Remember - this was the country that was set to parole Myra Hindley, who loved to kidnap children, rape and torture them to death while recording it on tape. They were already taking the bitch on field trips to allow her to get use to the outside world.

262 Posted by: Sean Bannion at August 18, 2011 07:50 PM (HUZDZ) A partial list in no particular order: 1. Appointed cabinet-level officials without advice or consent of Congress. 2. Continued to implement Obamacare after being ordered not to do so by a federal judge. 3. Obamacare waivers, despite precedents, fall under the "bill of attainder" clause and are prohibited (some will argue this but if they aren't nothing is - the process is arbitrary, there is no defined standard in law for the waivers). 4. Continued to withhold permission for Gulf drilling despite a judge's orders. 5. Libya. 6. Ordering the EPA to enforce laws not enacted by Congress. 7. Ordering the FCC to enforce laws not enacted by Congress. 8. Abdicating responsibility to enforce border control laws. 9. Expressly deliberate selective enforcement of voter laws. 10. Declaring DOMA unconstitutional, thus illegally claiming the right to override the Supreme Court *and* Congress. 11. Overriding laws and precedents concerning reorganization and debt of GM. 12. Bill-of-attainder violation (possibly) in the BP "shakedown" case. 13. Fast and Furious is not fully investigated yet but will almost certainly make this list. This was, in part, an act of war against Mexico. 14. NUMEROUS counts of campaigning with public money and employees and using Federal properties - not "wobbler/maybe" cases, just counting the egregious ones. 15. The Illinois Senate Seat Sale - not properly investigated but along with F&F it belongs on the "trial" list. I could go on for *quite* a while.

There's an interview with Elmore Leonard somewhere that would be worth reading. He's of the opinion that movies and books are such different mediums that the objective of the screenwriter is to get the character right, not worry about matching events. (And this was related to Leonard given an advice to a scriptwriter adapting one of Leonard's works, not the other way around.)

Posted by: Mandrake at August 18, 2011 08:07 PM (HQ77m) That's a list of crimes against the country and system of government while President. If I listed the *crimes* the list would be pages long, a hundred or more items, and things that *pissed me off* would be a thousand items long. Now, if you want to say that the Senate's shared testicle is out of town until 2013 at least, sure, fine, I understand that. But that shit is impeachable. Just because four members of SCOTUS wouldn't know the Constitution if it bit them in the ass one at least one more can only think on days of the week without an "s" in them doesn't mean they're not crimes against America and its system of government. If we are going to accept "you aren't going to catch and punish me so it isn't the law" as a legal principle then everybody had better get their shit together *right* quick because the war of all against all is ringin' your freakin' doorbell.

If we are going to accept "you aren't going to catch and punish me so it isn't the law" as a legal principle then everybody had better get their shit together *right* quick because the war of all against all is ringin' your freakin' doorbell.

I don't accept that.  Again, I am on your side.  Really.

But, for example, Libya is not impeachable.  The War Powers Act is of dubious constitutionality and if you want to litigate Libya, you'll end up making a determination on the War Powers Act first.

Your point about selective enforcement of voting laws - well, prosecutorial discretion is real - and allowable.  Ask any attorney.  Now in the case of the NBPP case, walking away after you've already won the case is mind-numbingly stupid.  But, not illegal.  Same goes for DOMA.

There are problems with your list.  I also stipulated, you might actually have a point with Fast and Furious.  But thinking that goes all the way to Obama and proving it are two separate issues.  There's no point in spending millions to go on an impeachment fishing expedition hoping you'll find the smoking gun that definiteively proves JEF is the Marxist we all know him to be.

Too much of your list is in the gray, and impeachment has to be black and white.

I understand you, I just think you're wrong. I think there is enough to do it *now*, but no one else in power is willing to do it. Obviously not every charge on the list would be brought, and the unwillingness to investigate in some cases (and cover-ups in others) make some items difficult. I think the impeachment power has been unofficially abrogated, at least for Democrats. And I think the consequences of that will be horrific. But frankly, I don't want to go there right no, I'm supposed to be avoiding stress because of my heart.

That was in 1986.  I distinctly remember because I had just driven 18 straight hours from Fort Benning to the garden spot of Fort Riley, Kansas in the dead of winter arriving at 6 am to a gray sky, brown earth and no trees.

The next day was the Super Bowl.  Pats drew first blood.  Then were crushed 52-10.

The next day the Challenger exploded.

Perry has been in the race for 2 minutes and has gotten the usual grace period ( nobody has seriously looked at his record, they just like the idea of a perfect new guy). He's got as many issues as any politician who has been in office for a while, less than some because he has governed in a solidly conservative state, but he still has some things that he will have to deal with once the glow wears off and gaffes continue. In the end, we will fight and argue over all of them and then pick one that not everyone likes but everyone here will vote for. That's not the issue. The issue is will it be someone enough people outside out the base will vote for so Barry goes down.

She said he was a crony capitalist because his biggest donor got a bit state contract. What she didn't say is that he was the only bidder and that it was for a NUCLEAR WASTE STORAGE FACILITY.

The she looked like MSNBC in editing Perry's quotes on the guardisil thing.

If she has some problems with the guy fine but tell the whole story, otherwise you look like a liberal doing drive by journalism.

But why is it only now that she is hacking Perry that everyone is piling on? She has hit every Republican candidate. Perry promoted and got passed a Dream Act in Texas in the early 2000s. People here would be killing any other candidate that did that. He famously came out against the AZ anti-illegal immigration law. That also was pretty popular here. Malkin may be a self-important, overly pure shrew, but thats not exactly news. Thats her shtick.  If there are going to be problems, find them and deal with them now. The "crony capitalist" charge is not a trivial one, and needs to be sorted out quickly. The Rezko-JEF connection could suddenly blow up in March, but Perry will still receive no passes. Then there's Perry's position on immigration, and his speech at a La Raza event; with a few discoveries and the correct spin, and maybe a JEF-Cowboys-Up-On-The-Border event or two, this could turn off a lot of otherwise motivated voters. We don't need people to vote by staying home.

We do have other, good candidates this time: Bachmann, maybe Ryan. Now is the time to vet everyone thoroughly. We should not disqualify anyone before June 2012

You know, I don't care about the primary attacks, but what she's doing - insinuating that the fact that Perry doesn't appear in the 100s of emails she's sifting through proves he was involved in something shady with Merck ...

That absence-of-evidence-is-proof-of-guilt schtick is the kind of "analysis"  you expect from dKos.

She's turned into the female Bill O'Reilly.

478 I don't get the ragging on MM.  Seems she has some valid points that should be watched about Perry.  Are we gonna have a Perry cult like the Obama cult where nobody can disagree with him or you should die?  Perry will hispander and will have the same immigration policy as OdipO.  He seems likely to continue the crony capitalism DC has had for decades.

Shouldn't he be called out on these things?  I saw people around here who were rooting for Christie and Ryan to enter previously, but once Perry joined those guys were all of a sudden terrible people based on rumours they would run.  I don't get it.

I'm not a Perry fanboy.  But he deserves better than he's getting from "our" side so far.

482 Perry promoted and got passed a Dream Act in Texas in the early 2000s. People here would be killing any other candidate that did that. He famously came out against the AZ anti-illegal immigration law. That also was pretty popular here.

You might want to go back and check the primary sources on those assertions.

When I investigated, I found that Perry had inherited the in state tuition bill from Bush and it had passed overwhelmingly.  There was no way he was going to veto it, even if he were inclined.  And it has nothing to do with the feds' "Dream Act."

As for the Arizona law, Perry made a pretty standard statement for one governor about another state by saying that some aspects of the Arizona law would not work in Texas.  He in no way ginned up opposition to the AZ law.

I don't know, you tell me? A Dream Act, really?  That's weird I didn't know a Governor could give citizenship to children of illegal aliens. Things must really be different in Texas.

Here is what he said about Arizonas law, you can agree or not, I don't but I am not the governor of texas.

“I fully recognize and support a state's right and obligation to protect its citizens, but I have concerns with portions of the law passed in Arizona and believe it would not be the right direction for Texas,” Perry said in a written statement.

“For example, some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe.”

I saw those comments.  You're mischaracterizing them, imho.

He said a continiguous fence (actually, I believe he was asked about a wall) from one end of the state to another was impossible.  He went on to assert that a combination of fencing (iirc, he made a point of saying near the metro areas) and border patrols would be more effective to secure the border.

PLEASE PROVIDE QUOTES AND LINKS WHEN YOU RAISE A CONCERN.  It's not fair to expect us to have to de-bunk unsubstantiated allegations.  I realize it's a strategy -- to wear us out so that your charges just hang there like farts -- but if you are arguing/discussing in good faith, stop being so lazy.

Everybody just calls it the dream act.  Its basically a state version.  In-state tuition for illegal immigrant children of illegal immigrants at state schools.  Neither born here.  It is unfair to taxpayers in general and specific college age Americans who's parents paid taxes in Texas for decades.  Where is their break?

This is Oh My God Texas we are talking about. Where men are men and illegals are skered. I've heard this daily for years. If Perry can't do better than this in Texas, a place where he takes credit for only inheriting the bad parts of Bush's legacy not the good part that includes no state income tax and assloads full of oil (what did you think brought all those jobs to Texas, tortillas?) then thats pretty weak tea. >>As for the Arizona law, Perry made a pretty standard statement for one governor about another state by saying that some aspects of the Arizona law would not work in Texas. He in no way ginned up opposition to the AZ law. Yea, I'm going full on bullshit on this one. He is governor of Texas, not North Dakota. He has a worse illegal problem than AZ. Brewer took a very courageous stand against Obama and the fecklessness of the federal gov't. Perry left her hanging. He is not strong on the illegal issue no matter how you try to spin it. You can argue with me all you want on this but it will come out in the election. If Obama had passed the Dream Act in the first 2 years of his administration, a law that he could claim mimicked what Perry had fought for in Texas, Perry would be toast.

509 >>Kind of like Jack Straw saying Perry passed a Dream Act which is a total fucking lie. As a compassionate state, we know that for our children to succeed, they must not only be healthy, but educated. The future leaders of our two nations are learning their fractions and their ABC’s in classrooms all along this border. Immigrants from around the world are being taught in Texas classrooms, and our history is rich with examples of new citizens who have made great contributions. We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, “we don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there.” And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders, the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede. http://tinyurl.com/y9re5ot In 2001, Perry signed the Texas DREAM Act, which allows in-state tuition for students who have lived in Texas for three years and either have obtained a GED or graduated from the state's public or accredited private schools. Funny thing about that big wall in China, it doesn't go the whole way.

The Great Wall of China is not a continuous wall but is a collection of short walls that often follow the crest of hills on the southern edge of the Mongolian plain. The Great Wall of China, known as "long Wall of 10,000 Li" in China, extends about 8,850 kilometers (5,500 miles).

Since the Great Wall was discontinuous, Mongol invaders had no trouble breaching the wall by going around it

518 There's a video today in New Hampshire of a mother  goading her son into asking questions of Perry. "How old is the earth?" the crumb cruncher asked. "I don't know" said Perry. It was an obviously uneducated question asked because liberals tend to believe Christians think the earth was created 6,000 years ago.

I don't know a single Christian who thinks the earth is only 6,000 years old (though there are some, I'm sure). The earth is billions of years old; however, God created Mankind around 6,000 years old.

I challenge any neanderthal to refute this.

We also don't have income tax so everyone that lives here pays taxes, legal or illegal. I wish they weren't here but they are. I would just as soon we had a tamper proof social security card which would make it almost impossible for them to be here. In state tuition for their kids isn't a favorite of mine but it isn't a deal breaker.

For what it is worth, here is my take:  if the person making the statement means it as an insult, it is an insult.  Don't look for offense when none is intended.

Jack Straw,

That was some pretty weak shit, quoting US News and World Report? Even they said it was the "so called" Texas Dream Act recently named after the failed immigration bill last year. The law was passed in 2001, long before anyone heard of a dream act.

Like I said, it's people who call it that are just people that want to make it sound worse than it is.

People like you.

The law when it was passed was called SB 1528.

ha that was really weak. I'm not surprised though.

544 >>ha that was really weak. I'm not surprised though. And I am equally unsurprised that you would find words and actions done by someone you support so against your beliefs that you would blame me and the people who reported them. It doesn't matter. They happened. They are facts. And they will come out from people who don't care if you think they are credible. I was hoping for something more intelligent from you. You're pretending the facts aren't what they are, no sweat off my balls.

545 551 {............ We should not disqualify anyone before June 2012}

Yes, we should.  Bachmann and her vanity run should've "disqualified" from day fucking 1.

Ryan is a good guy, but he's not ripe yet.  Thousands and thousands of men have served in the House over the last 120 years; there's a reason none of them ever became President in that time.

We're going against an incumbent who'll have a shitload of money and who the public wants to like, despite his shitty performance.  The last thing we need is to toss him an easy win against an unelectable flake or Boy Wonder from the House.

I agree with perhaps all of your individual points, and certainly your final conclusion.

The problem is that your method left us with John McCain in 2008.

Could Teh Fred or Giuliani have beaten JEF? I don't know, and I think no one can make a very convincing argument either way, because they dropped out too soon. I think the combination of perceived popularity and economics was the reason ... but do we want this to happen again?

Unelectable flakes seem to have tremendous staying power; why make it easy?

I see the current popularity of Perry ... here he seems to have displaced all other contenders, with 6 months to go before the serious campaigning starts. But MM has raised serious issues about Perry that need resolution ... should we start disqualifying other candidates now, before we see the answers?

Clearly, we need someone to cure the national case of typhoid that JEF has inflicted upon us.  The time so sort out candidates has not yet arrived.

It doesn't matter what I think or what people chose to call 10 year old legislation this year when Perry started talking about running for office.

What matters is whats on the title of the bill, you know the one he signed. Those are not only the facts, it's the law.

That is what I said in the first place, people call it that to make it sound worse than it is.

548 >>That is what I said in the first place, people call it that to make it sound worse than it is. I gave you Perry's words and you pretend it never happened. Whatever. Believe what you want. I'll just read the words of the people who actually spoke them and the actions of the lawmakers who actually fought for the laws the supported.

Oh jesus jack,

I read Perry's words, he dosn't say one word about "Dream Act".

We have the same law in Washington and it isn't called the Washington Dream Act. Know why? Our Governor isn't running for president.

I will apologize for calling you a liar though. I can see where you got it so I'm sorry. Doesn't change the reason it recently started getting called the dream act though.

Regarding Romney the only thing I have ever said bad about him was the fact that he skipped out on Vietnam and when I said that I said it was a personal thing for me.

I don't have an opinion about his health care bill. I wasn't in MA at the time.

551 Mt. Everest has around 200 dead bodies on the mountain. It is nearly impossible for recovery of a body off the mountain. Most of the bodies are in the same exact position they were when they died. Perfectly preserved in time because of the cold. Along the route up to the summit climbers will pass all these bodies. There are bodies over 50 years old that look like they were placed there yesterday.

----------------

Wondering if in 10,000 years someone will happen upon the perfectly preserved bodies and think "this must have been the dumber among men."

Just thinking aloud....

552 You're totally wrong, Ace. If I say "that's a good picture", what I mean is that it captures the essence of a person, generally, a smile or a twinkle in the eye. A photo of a person should be judged as we judge portrait art: if it captures a person's character or distinctive personal behaviors, those things that endear them to those who love them, then of course it is a good picture. You just don't like having your picture taken or having it commented on so you came up with this crappy post. Nothing wrong with that. But it elicited so much fawning from your fanbois that I have subsequently been forced to downgrade my assessment of AceOfSpade's readership.

555 Once a photo has been taken it becomes it's own independent object that can be judged on it's own merits regardless of whatever it is a photo of. You can look at photos that are of people you know nothing about and judge them to be good or bad. What's the lighting, the composition, the person's expression? Does the photo elicit an emotional response? Sadness, laughter, wonder? A good photo of someone you know usually means the following: the lighting is decent; they don't have food in their teeth; they have a happy but not forced expression on their face.
