In case the circumstances of this plane disappearance weren't odd enough already ...

U.S. investigators suspect that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 stayed in the air for about four hours past the time it reached its last confirmed location, according to two people familiar with the details, raising the possibility that the plane could have flown on for hundreds of additional miles under conditions that remain murky.

Aviation investigators and national security officials believe the plane flew for a total of five hours, based on data automatically downloaded and sent to the ground from the Boeing Co. 777Â’s engines as part of a routine maintenance and monitoring program.

Update: Of course this report is disputed, but the amount of conflicting information on this thing continues to amaze.

10 Malaysia has already refuted the WSJ article.

On Mar 13th 2014 afternoon Malaysia's Transport Minister said in a televised press conference, that the last ACARS transmission was received from the aircraft at 01:07L (17:07Z), there were no later transmissions via ACARS (editorial note: which effectively states a report by a single US "news" paper of the engines monitoring recording information via ACARS for 4 more hours is untrue), the last transmission received from the aircraft indicated all systems were operating normally. Malaysia's Search Control Center consulted with the NTSB and other agencies with respect to the unidentified primary radar returns and it was a common decision, that there were sufficient grounds to dedicate forces to search for the aircraft west of Malaysia. The aircraft dispatched to the location identified by SASTIND did not find anything, China did not intend to release the satellite images to the public. Malaysia is committed to find the aircraft and is going to intensify search efforts further.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

I think IÂ’ve mentioned before the sexual habit of Darry Zanuck, head of Twentieth Centrury-Fox.  Every afternoon at 4.00, heÂ’d take a break, spending half an hour with a starlet who understood providing release to the chief was one of the few ways to escape the hell of endless cattle calls.*

ZanuckÂ’s wife, Virginia, knew all about her husbandÂ’s daily dalliances – and his more long-term affairs** – but she didnÂ’t hold grudges.  She understood the position the starlets were in, and so long as the affair had been discreet and was in the past, she didnÂ’t bar the “other women” from enjoying the hospitality of the Zanuck table.  “After all,” she once quipped, “that could cut down the available guest list considerably.”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Zanuck’s approach was at least brisk and businesslike, as opposed to the degrading Harry Cohn of Columbia’s usual open fly and command of “Suck it, bitch!”

**ZanuckÂ’s marriage would eventually break apart over the exotic Bayla Wegier, whom the mogul rechristened “Bella Darvi.”  Zanuck left Virginia for her, but broke off their relationship after discovering she liked to play on both sides of the fence.

19 VIA, the Rolls Royce EHM transmits data either via satellite link or VHF in 3KB bursts using the ACARS system.
http://tinyurl.com/oh3atgp

ACARS was developed in the 1980s.  It operates a bit like Twitter.  Can send or receive messages over VHF on it.  Message length a total of 220 characters.  Plain text messages can be sent via ACARS but it is more normal for pilots and ground to send coded messages on it.  The display and keyboard IIRC are located between the pilot and co-pilot on the center console.  On 9/11 ACARS was used to notify planes in flight of the hijackings.

24 tough choice.  Right now the safe answer is We Don't Know.

How about we remember a 737 that went down in 2007 in Indonesia.  Took them nine days to find it.  Very little debris on the water.  The FDR and CVR with the rest of the plane were on the sea floor.

The final determination of cause of crash.  Flight crew distraction.  The auto-pilot disengaged and plane departed controlled flight.  And when crew finally tried to recover they over stressed the airframe and it broke apart.

Meanwhile.,over at HuffPo -- where all the real TrueCons hang out:

Dole Is Conservative, Cruz Is Not

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) mocked former Republican presidential nominees Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney as candidates that do not stand on principle. The implication being that those men lost because they were not conservative enough.

No one who followed those presidential races, or paid even cursory attention to the exit polling, can reasonably conclude that these candidates lost because they did not subscribe to Cruz's radical brand of so-called "conservatism." On the contrary, each of these candidate's campaigns were damaged by their proximity to right-wing extremism.

63 When news first broke of the missing Boeing, I wondered aloud of the political-economic ramifications, international power plays; whether creating or using the incident in order to facilitate a stronger hold by either China or US trade alliances. Treaties have been and are being drawn. (Now, Vietnam "ally" of the US against China, example. Another thread, the burning ironic tragedy of interventionist US Wars.) With current treaties in mind, consider what China might be up to distributing disinformation in this case. Also, who would willingly share intelligence with whom. And it seems wise for Malaysia to turn to the non-aligned regional India for naval and intelligence assistance. == "Malaysia says no evidence missing plane flew hours after losing contact" March 13, 7:36 a.m. Reuters http://tinyurl.com/lt2x3t8 WRONG IMAGES On the sixth day of the search, planes scanned an area of sea where Chinese satellite images had shown what could be debris, but found no sign of the airliner. Hishammuddin said the images were provided accidentally. "The Chinese government neither authorized nor endorsed (putting it on a website)," he said. "The image is not confirmed to be connected to the plane." It was the latest in a series of false signals for the Boeing 777-200ER, adding to the confusion and agony of the relatives of the passengers. As frustration mounted over the failure to find any trace of the plane, China heaped pressure on Malaysia to improve coordination in the search. Around two-thirds of the people aboard the lost plane were Chinese. Premier Li Keqiang, speaking at a news conference in Beijing, demanded that the "relevant party" step up coordination while China's civil aviation chief said he wanted a "smoother" flow of information from Malaysia, which has come under heavy criticism for its handling of the disaster. If the military radar signal cited by air force chief Rodzali Daud was the missing plane, the aircraft would have flown for 45 minutes and dropped only about 5,000 feet in altitude since its sighting on civilian radar in the Gulf of Thailand. That would mean the plane had turned sharply west from its original course, travelling hundreds of miles over the Malay Peninsula from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea to a point roughly south of Phuket and east of the tip of Indonesia's Aceh province and India's Nicobar island chain. Indonesia and Thailand have said their militaries detected no sign of any unusual aircraft in their airspace. Malaysia has asked India for help in tracing the aircraft and New Delhi's coastguard planes have joined the search.

67 "Meanwhile, Malaysia’s acting Transport Minister, Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, flatly rejected a report from The Wall Street Journal claiming U.S. investigators suspect the plane flew for as long as four hours — possibly hundreds of miles — after it lost contact with ground control. The Journal, citing “two people familiar with the details,” said data automatically downloaded from the plane’s Rolls Royce Trent 800 engines as part of a maintenance program continued to reach the ground for four hours after the flight went off radar. “Those reports are inaccurate,” said Hussein. He said the last transmission of data from Flight 370 came prior to the loss of the plane’s signal on radar and communications with the crew, and indicated “everything was normal.” “As far as Rolls Royce and Boeing are concerned, those reports are inaccurate,” said Hussein." The Malaysian Transport Minister is denying it and saying that officially Boeing and RR are as well. The report is coming from "others." I tried to post the link to Drudge but too many strings. 74 There was the Helios 737 crash that was similar to the golfer's death.

Previous crew complained about a possible door seal issue.  So ground crew did a pressurization check but to do that required the system to be switched to Manual.  Mechanic forgot to put it back to Automatic.  Then flight crew running through the check lists missed the switch setting three times.  So as the plane passed 10,000ft the crew received a cabin pressure audible alarm but mistook it for a ground only alarm.  They were in contact with ground and mechanic asked them to see if switch was in Manual or Automatic but pilot ignored it.  Crew and passengers lost consciousness and plane continue to Greece.  Greek Air Force sortied F-16s to intercept the plane when no one could raise the crew.  The fighter pilots saw crew slumped over.  Then just as one of the cabin attendants reached the cockpit, both engines failed in succession due to fuel starvation.  The 737 crashed into a hill with no survivors.

So the Helios event is unlikely to have happened here.  It is not a sudden event that would instantly incapacitate the crew.

MTF I am simply pointing out how the systems work.  If Malaysia is right that ACARS stopped transmitting when they say it did, then Rolls Royce could not receive any data from the engines.

I have also repeatedly said We Don't Know.

79 The three main parties have brought Ukip upon themselves. It is the product less of specific policy issues than with deep-seated contempt for what the public see as the pampered, identikit members of the political class. A new YouGov poll shows how these feelings have driven Ukip's surge: 73 per cent of its supporters think that never having had a "real" job outside the worlds of national politics, think tanks, journalism or local government before becoming an MP is "unsuitable in a leading politician". And 54 per cent of Ukippers think that going to Eton and not understanding how normal people live makes someone undesirable to be a politician. Ukip voters are also more likely than anyone else to look disapprovingly upon MPs who have worked im investment banks or benefited from "connections" to enter politics. What started out as an effort by President Reagan to help poor people in rural areas have a phone in cases of emergency has mushroomed into what critics suspect is a new welfare program.

"The cost has gone from $143 million a few years ago to $2.2 billion today," Republican Louisiana Sen. David Vitter said, noting that today's cost is 15 times what it was.

And Vitter adds, "The FCC, itself, said in a recent year there were 270,000 beneficiaries that had more than one of these subsidized cellphones. That's completely against the law right there."

The FCC told lawmakers the top five companies can't verify the eligibility of 41 percent of those who get phones.

This 777 thing sounds like it's from a Clive Cussler novel, Treasure I think.

In that book, there was an assassin who impersonated the pilot, locked the cockpit and killed the rest of the flight deck crew, then set the autopilot to fly the plane 180 degrees away from its filed course so it would disappear in the arctic.  He then parachuted out of the plane via a maintenance hatch in the cockpit and was picked up by an accomplice.  The idea was the plane (and the target of his assassination) would just disappear in what looked like an accident of some kind.

126 60. Malaysia is a third-world country. I would not expect their govt. to be anywhere near as competent as ours. Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at March 13, 2014 07:55 AM (V70Uh) deja vu, no? Hm, US Government "competent" heh. That explains everything. And nothing. http://tinyurl.com/ljvebvt Malaysia is as "modern" a former British colony as any. http://tinyurl.com/ljvebvt With its natural resource trade in agriculture, GOLD, rubber and tin, Malaysia has never been considered a poor backwater. It boasts a rich culture, a high civilization attained as Hindis, since capitulated to Islamic conversion begun by a King's marriage to his Muslim Indonesian bride, taking hold in Malaysia during the 15th-16th centuries (coinciding with the European Renaissance). Comparing smaller governments vs. too big to fail monstrosities? The US Constitutional Republic functioned as such while a smaller government. No longer given the "more biggest is bestest" obscene authoritarian governance. Third World status? "The Southeast Asian country experienced an economic boom and underwent rapid development during the late 20th century and has GDP per capita of $17,200 today, to be considered a newly industrialized country. Since it became independent in 1957, Malaysia's economic performance has been one of Asia's best. Real gross domestic product (GDP) grew by an average of 6.5% per year from 1957 to 2005. Performance peaked in the early 1980s through the mid-1990s, as the economy experienced sustained rapid growth averaging almost 8% annually. High levels of foreign and domestic private investment played a significant role as the economy diversified and modernized. Once heavily dependent on primary products such as rubber and tin, Malaysia today is a middle-income country with a multi-sector economy based on services and manufacturing. Malaysia is one of the world's largest exporters of semiconductor components and devices, electrical goods, solar panels, and information and communication technology (ICT) products." http://tinyurl.com/l8zanxc "Literacy rates (percentage of people over 15 who can read and write) are high in Malaysia, with an overall Literacy rate of 88.7%. Literacy rates are higher among males (92%) than females (85.4%)." "The Malaysian population continues to grow at a rate of 2.4% per annum. In 2010, the Malays were 60.3%, Chinese 22.9%, and the Indians 8.1% of the total population. The Chinese population has shrunk to half of its peak share from 1957 when it was 45% of Malaysia, although in absolute numbers they have multiplied more than threefold." http://tinyurl.com/mrlrvaz As for freedom of religion in the Muslim Malaysia? http://tinyurl.com/mte7cv9 The right to choose exists without martial execution, despite social pressures. Sharia only applies to Muslims. Problem being, not all Malay officially recorded by law as Muslim want to be Muslim. But as far as Islamic State Religion nations go, better Malaysia under British model than a Wahhabi Saharan Desert.

Dug out this morning, snow was about halfway up the doors of my car. It drifted worse in other parts of the lot, so I kind of lucked out. It's all over now, and the cities and towns are digging out. If there's one thing we do well in WNY, it's digging out! Fun fact: yesterday's total means that this winter has seen more snowfall than the past two winters combined! (stats as of the Buffalo Airport.)

157 "The sacrifice" goes like this. Guy in my neighborhood, retired, owns his house. Taxes and utilities and insurance are just over $1000/month, for what he calls "the right to live in your own property." You couldn't rent any cheaper.

When O'Care kicks in on him next year, there will be an additional $1100/month for him to pay for "healthcare." Plus, somewhere between $5K-$10K in deductibles, up from $300 and small co-pays now. That's $18000+ a year he needs to come up with. His income is $30,000. It's not just cablevision he'll be giving up.

He'll have to move into subsidized housing to afford his subsidized "health." This is not a satisfied citizen. We're past Atlas Shrugged territory now, and well over into We The Living.

I know. Now if we had an organization that promoted the ideal of fiscal responsibility and the cutting of programs that serve no national purpose or cutting agencies that duplicate effort or that act like they are unaccountable to the People.

If we could find some group that would stand up and fight against spending for non essentials, why they might actually gain a following.

And doing so would not only put money back in citizens pockets but those rogue agencies wouldn't be making citizens lives difficult and expensive and may some jobs would evolve that those people receiving aid could become self sufficient.

Gosh suddenly, everything and everybody would start to work again.

Re: 2016

Republican Senate leaders in Kentucky cheered a bipartisan vote Wednesday that advanced a bill to let Republican Sen. Rand Paul run for president without automatically giving up his Senate seat - but Democratic leaders in the State House warned it was not a sign the bill has enough support to become law.

Rep Sen. Thayer told reporters after the committee meeting he believes Paul does not need a law change to run for both offices. But Paul and his staff asked Thayer to introduce the bill just in case. "If the Senate does pass the bill and the House decides to kill the bill, ultimately this is going to end up in court where I believe Sen. Paul has a very strong constitutional case to make."

Until the money stops, the people won't have the incentive to work.

Until the money stops and the taxes go down and the distortions of the government in the marketplace ease off, they're won't be any place to work.

Until the money stops and the corporations have to quit rent seeking and actually produce (and are required to produce it in THIS country) they won't expand their market and they won't increase their business so their won't be jobs for people to have.

It's gotta start somewhere and with the Left having a strangle hold on the means of communication, there will never be a cultural change sufficient to force DC to take the necessary steps.

DC has to change first.

*sigh*

But most likely what will happen is that economically we will continue to implode until no one is working and the problem becomes obvious to everyone in spite of the filtration by the Media.

190 Wonder if the discrepancy in data from the engines is due to a time zone difference between the engine's location and wherever it is sending data to. - In WWII when the island of Malta was under siege the Brits were desperate to get planes there so they loaded some Spitfires on a carrier, cruised as close as they dared, and let fly. The problem was that the navy figured the Spits' range in nautical miles instead of statute miles and they all ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea.

191 denial from Malaysia is their refuting they searched the crew's home(s). That should have been done by now. Baldy, All in all, this disappearing act has never happened before, anywhere. Were it to have happened stateside here in America, imagine the public protests demanding an answer, people going hog wild. Malaysian "spokespersons" are just getting broken in to that job description. Their experience has been in repeating official statements, and not being questioned by the DEMANDING international press to solve riddles. No doubt there are people who cave under pressure and say what they think someone wants to hear in order to get someone off their back. Bad move, that. They'd reported searching homes of their missing crew. Then the Western Leftist bleeding heart media mouths screamed "foul" since the missing crew were victims, and their families "tortured" by home search during mourning. So some kneejerk denied having disrespected families at their time of mourning. No doubt, the homes were searched pronto. Before this unprecedented incident (yuck Obama), the Malaysian Airlines boasted high ranking quality. Of course, how this incident is handled will prove their worth. The airline and the nation of Malaysia is coordinating with every other nation. Consider what a clusterfuck that must be. Best of intentions paving the road to hell and all...

194 WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will direct the Labor Department to strengthen overtime pay protections for millions of workers, a White House official said.

The directive is meant to help salaried workers, such as fast-food shift supervisors or convenience store managers, who may be expected to work more than 40 hours a week without receiving overtime pay. The proposed change is part of Obama's effort to focus on closing the gap between the wealthy and the poor, which also includes a call to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $10.10.

I sometimes fantasize about what a real leader would do in the wake of this Russian shit.

A real leader who would call the Kremlin and say "Vladdy...can I call you Vladdy?  Vladdy, here's the thing.  You need the west much more than the west needs you.  If you don't play nice with us, we are going to drill baby drill.  We are opening Keystone.  We are going to frack the hell out of every deposit we can find.  We are going to renew our relationships with Europe and get them technology so they can safely jump on the fracking train.  We are going to push the price of a barrel of oil to where a schoolkid can buy it with pennies from sofa cushions.  You know as well as I do that if oil goes below $90 a barrel, you are finito, bandito.

We will halt any and all tech transfers...because yeah, you have your western Siberia oil fields but they are almost tapped out, and you don't have the technology to get the eastern fields up and running any time soon.  And while we're at it, we're going to put the kibosh on western capital investments in Russia - you're basically a consolation member of the BRICs anyway, and all it would take is just a small push to consign you to economic oblivion.

And then we're going to get serious.  We may be facing DOOM, but we can still field military deployments that will force you to spend money you don't have either to keep up - and your creditors are a lot less patient than ours.

So dude - chill.  Forget this Russian Empire shit and come join the rest of the world."

But that's just a pipe dream, alas.

I just posted the news, didn't make a value judgement.

However -- one election at a time seems fair. But then again, whatever it takes to get the conservatives into the race, cause Lord knows Team Republican doesn't hold back on using the rules to their advantage.

219 I want to emphasize again that Scott Walker delivers surpluses, tax cuts and jobs. Chris Christie consumes surpluses, taxes and jobs, all while deciding how you should purchase cars and donuts. Scott Walker for President! (Unless I get really pissed off at something he does or says, in which case its Peruvia for me)

223 Here was a hymn I was not famillar with, "In Times Like these you need a Savior." I like the words. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2MP0E0vO1I ~In Times Like These During the fearful days at the height of World War II, this comforting hymn was written. In the midst of a busy day as a housewife, Ruth Caye Jones felt an inspiration from the Holy Spirit. She stopped her work to quickly put down both words and music. Since that day the hymn has been a blessing to countless Christians at special times of need. It has brought comfort during illness, has been used widely at funerals, has encouraged and challenged Christian workers, and has drawn many to salvation. -Kenneth W. Osbeck Mrs. Jones experienced for herself the consolation the words of the song could bring as she spent time recovering form serious surgery a few years after it was written. ++++++++++ In Times Like These (1) In times like these, you need a Savior, In times like these, you need an anchor; Be very sure, be very sure, Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock! CHORUS: The Rock is Jesus, Yes, HeÂ’s the One, The Rock is Jesus, The only One Be very sure, be very sure, Your anchor holds, And grips the Solid Rock. (2) In times like these, you need the Bible, In times like these, O be not idle! Be very sure, be very sure, Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock. (3) In times like these, I have a Savior, In times like these, I have an anchor, IÂ’m very sure, IÂ’m very sure, My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.

Buy a HavaHart trap. When you catch one, bring it into the garage or wherever is hidden from sight and shoot it.

Repeat as necessary.

225 (Granted my city considers pretty much anything that fires a projectile, including arguably a nerf gun a "firearm" so there's that to contend to, since it'd be "discharging a firearm" in the city limits.) I wonder how they square the with the federal definition or physics since their is no "fire" with an airgun.

Of course you did LDC -- by choosing to post that at all, you have made a value judgment.

In your judgement, this is important information to disseminate to your potential readers. Your fans, if I can be more precise. Your detractors have already tuned you out. Your fans or neutrals may be influenced.

There's nothing wrong with all this; I just like tidier labels.

233 wtf: ever heard of this from the 1930s? America's Planned War on Britain documentary http://tinyurl.com/kjr9q7g "War Plan Red" was an American strategy to make war on Great Britain (hotbed of socialism). It was conceived in the late 1920s and developed throughout the next decade, including the idea to build air bases capable of bombing cities in the British dominion of Canada, where the US top brass intended the conflict to take place. The plan was officially withdrawn in 1939, with the outbreak of the Second World War, although it was not declassified until 1974. Peter Carlson, ed., American History magazine, former Washington Post journalist, researching in our National Archives, was introduced to Mr. Taylor of the National Archives in Wash.D.C. employed for 60 years This will make for good conversation...

234 Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 13, 2014 09:03 AM (QFxY5) Yeah, here's the problem. I've already had one police call that ended up at my house for "gunfire" after my neighbor shot off some fireworks. I think the slightly noisy lady behind us saw me cleaning my shotgun on the back patio (listen that Hoppes #9 solvent smells like shit, I'm cleaning outside.) and now assumes I'm a "gun nut." So the last thing I need to be doing is actually firing even a .22 around here. (4 cop cars, 4 cop cars for fireworks.) Having said that, I have no problem buying a stop that will kill the thing outright. And no problem cleaning up after it (mouse worker remember?) Nor for that matter do I have a problem accidently killing the cat that seems to be stray around here.

Yep.  One of the "Color" series of strategic war plans from the pre-war years.

For fun, take a look at the US Plan Orange that would have sailed the US Fleet right into where the Japanese War Plan wanted them.  Would have been a bloodbath.

245 President Obama is threatening to veto a law  that would allow Congress to sue him in federal courts for arbitrarily changing or refusing to enforce federal laws because it "violates the separation of powers" by encroaching on his presidential authority.

Obama also threatened to veto another bill by Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., which would require the administration to explain decisions not to enforce laws when those decisions are rooted in policy concerns rather than just constitutional concerns (which the Justice Department is already required to do).

How dare anyone question his imperial majesty's ability to do whatever in the hell he wants to

246 "War Plan Red" was an American strategy to make war on Great Britain (hotbed of socialism). That was just one of the "color" plans. We also had one for Japan (Orange), Germany (Black), and Mexico (Green) among others. Fast forward a bit and Desert Storm was largely based on Schwartzkopf's planning document for war with Iraq that he wrote in the early 1980's.

251 Count 127. Defendant Steyn has said substantially the same things or worse about the fraudulence of PlaintiffÂ’s hockey stick for many years in far more prominent publications in Australia and other jurisdictions without attracting legal action by Dr Mann. It cannot be the intent of the First Amendment that it should leave citizens of the United States with fewer rights to free speech than those of countries that remained within the British Empire.

This sounds like typical Steyn!.
