"Alright, who left their cell phone on?"
— Gabriel Malor

Over at Gizmodo, there's a gif of lighting striking a plane taking off from Osaka. As the fellow says, this happens all the time; the lighting just passes around the plane.

He asks a question that I've always wondered about:

Now, can anyone explain to this ignorant (me) person how 100 trillion (million million) watts can hit a plane and nothing happens to the electronics inside, while my cell can wreak havoc emitting just a few microwaves?

I'm sure someone here knows, so, what gives?

(Oh, and yeah, I'm sure that gif is a zillion years old. Don't start with me. It's late.)

The Scandi penis museum
— Purple Avenger

Damn scandis again. I don't know if Icelanders really qualify as proper scandis, but I don't really care. Its cold, its north, they eat weird stuff, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and call'em scandis.

So these weirdo scandis got a freaking penis museum up there. I guess there's not much to do in the land of the midnight sun when it goes dark for 6 months, so they sit around stuffing and mounting penises...all kinds of penises.

So...lets say you're some randy congressman who has a hankering to see what some genuine polar bear cock looks like, but you're not into the whole getting mauled to death and eaten thing. Here you go. They got one. The bear ain't good enough? Bear cock ain't hot enough to wax your skis eh? No problemo - they got some monstrous whale cock too.

According to Walking the Berkshires,

The Icelandic Phallological Museum contains a collection of over one hundred and fifty penises and penile parts belonging to almost all the land and sea mammals that can be found in Iceland.

Chavez's phony hostage negotiation
— Purple Avenger

We see this story here where comrade Chavez is in Colombia to "help broker" a deal to get some FARC held hostages "released" in exchange for hundreds of FARC rebels.

... The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, is holding 45 hostages, including soldiers, politicians and the three U.S. contractors abducted more than four years ago. In return for releasing them, the FARC wants hundreds of guerrillas to be freed, including two commanders in U.S. prisons.

Success by Chavez in mediating a humanitarian swap could expand his influence and improve his image in the region, but it's a risky move -- he is stepping squarely into Colombia's civil conflict and generating optimism among the families of those long held captive by rebels. Seldom has Chavez involved himself so directly with the internal affairs of another nation...

Of course anyone who has followed events along the border has known for quite a while the real situation is that comrade Chavez instituted what amounts to a defacto low intensity war with Colombia using the FARC as proxies. He's been arming them and supplying them with across the border havens from which to launch their attacks. He knows the Colombians, being significantly weaker militarily, are loathe to chase the FARC across the border or attack their havens for fear of giving him the excuse he wants to start carving off large chunks of Colombia for himself.

This whole deal smacks of being a 100% stage managed affair for the idiots in the world press. The smart money says that the "hostages" were likely snatched on Hugo's orders in anticipation of such a spectacle so he can demonstrate his "stature", "influence", and overall premier grade world leader cred for the idiots in the MSM...who appear to be swallowing his bullshit hook line and sinker.

Chupacabra?
— Open Blog

-Sinistar @doubleplusundead

Hardly, says I. A Texas woman thinks she has chupacabra attacking her farm animals, I think she has feral Mexican Hairless Dogs, or a mutt with that breed, or a close relative. Look at the skin tone of the dog in the article, and the one in the Wiki page, note the shape of the ears. Its similar, and keep in mind, the 'chupacabra' has been dead awhile, plus it could be older, which may explain the wrinkles and ears sitting down on the head.

I don't know why, but I like the whole dog breeding/show thing. I've always liked seeing the different breeds, and learning what the purpose of the breed was or what it was naturally made to do, so I had a pretty strong idea of what this thing was immediately.

Time to move the Global Warming goal posts again! [Dogstar]
— Open Blog

Hey, it's been a while since we checked in with the Global Warming eco-kids. They've taken some hits lately- the IPCC dropped the "hockey stick" graph and NASA was forced to recalculate all post-2000 US temperature data. The results- they lost two of their best talking points.

However, they still had their A-1, die-hard fallback position- "There's a CONSENSUS of scientists!!!"

Well, sorry to be the party pooper, kiddos, but you just lost your ace in the hole...

Brian De Palma…Jackass
— DrewM.

As Ace bloged about a few weeks ago, Hollywood is gearing up to release a torrent of anti-Iraq War movies.

Well, an early entry is Redacted by Brian De Palma. It took awhile for the director of movies such as Carrie, Scarface, and The Untouchables to find something about the war that got his creative juices flowing but alas he did. Not surprisingly what he found was a crime that puts American soldiers in the worst possible light:

When I read about the Mahmudiyah incident in Iraq 2006 - five US soldiers raped a local girl, killed her and her family and later tried to disguise it as an insurgent attack - I knew I had a story.

Now what happened at Mahmudiyah was a crime of almost unimaginable horror. It’s also one that has been thoroughly investigated and prosecuted. Those involved (with the exception of one defendant who is still awaiting trial) have been tried and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 5 to 100 years.

Apparently De Palma couldn’t find any stories that interested him of American heroes, men who gave their lives to save their fellow Americans or who try and make the life of Iraqi children a little better. I doubt he even bothered to look for them.

Of course it could just be because De Palma only has one trick when it comes to war movies. Remember his Casualties of War?

a film based, we are told, on an actual event. A five-man patrol of American soldiers in Vietnam kidnapped a young woman from her village, forced her to march with them, and then raped her and killed her.

Apparently when De Palma looks at an America serviceman all he sees is the face of a killer. Perhaps he should look at this video of American soldiers who rescued handicapped Iraqi orphans from appalling conditions.

Now, I’d like to say De Palma is a talentless hack but that’s clearly not the case. He’s just a typical lefty pining for the day when the evil Americans will leave Iraq to the sweet ministrations of al Qaeda, left over Bathists and Shiite Militias.

Alas, Mr. De Palma’s choice of topics says far more about him than it does our military or the nature of war.

No More Battlestar on iTunes?
— Gabriel Malor

NBC-Universal and Apple were unable to come to an agreement about the pricing of TV shows on iTunes. iTunes will stop selling new shows from NBC-Universal starting in September.

NBC wanted "more than double the wholesale price” for new TV episodes. Apple was unwilling to agree to that since it would bring the price to iTunes consumers of downloading an episode to $4.99.

Also, Apple's statement claims:

Since NBC would withdraw their shows in the middle of the television season, Apple has decided to not offer NBC TV shows for the upcoming television season beginning in September.

This seems more like Apple trying to punish NBC than anything else. Why not sell half a season before the contract is up?

Why is this important? Because the best show on television will no longer be available on iTunes. Frak!
