Van Halen Pre-Tour Rehearsals
— Ace

Penn State Marine says he's pretty sure Dave hit himself in the face with the mic stand in this rehearsal of Beautiful Girls, but I couldn't see it.

More stuff here.

I guess they sound pretty good despite the fact that Michael Anthony is out of the band. Their harmonies are ludicrously awful, but they always were. Now that I think about it, it might have been Van Halen that Spinal Tap was specifically parodying in, say, its "Heartbreak Hotel" anti-harmony./

I' m surprised they sound more or less like they used to.

Is it still pro-bono if you're seeking legal fees?
— Purple Avenger

The Seattle Times asks the question. I'm thinking that the public's notion of pro-bono differs considerably from that of these lawyers.

Lawyers at Davis Wright Tremaine didn't charge a parent group for seven years of work on a U.S. Supreme Court case against Seattle Public Schools: They took the case pro bono.

But now that the firm is trying to collect $1.8 million in legal fees from the school district, several national legal experts say the term — technically, "pro bono publico," meaning "for the public good" — may no longer apply.

The firm's effort has put a local lens on a national debate: If attorneys get paid for pro bono work, is it still pro bono?

That Tasered Dude
— Ace

Pink on pink, which is why this won't get all that much play and few "lessons" will be drawn from it. The media just doesn't have any interest in stoking conflicts between the left and hard left; they don't have a "narrative" by which to reduce it to a simple morality play. I mean, if you begin asking questions, you might have to note the left has thuggishly menaced and stage-charged conservative speakers for years, all with official university tacit endorsement.

This kid was a whiny bitch and quite frankly probably wanted to get tasered. Still I'm baffled at how security rushes in to arrest and taser a douchebag to prevent him from hurling words at a liberal like John Kerry when they don't seem terribly bothered by lefties lobbing physical objects at conservative speakers.

His email address is the rather Beauchampian famouswriterman@aol.com. Yeah, that's the way Hemmingway would have handled it, pal.

Then again, Hemmingway sort of gave himself an extreme jolt while "cleaning his taser," so maybe that's not the best sarcastic comparison possible.

Oh, and John Kerry just remembered how outraged he was to see a protester treated in this manner. He claims he didn't know about the tasering until later.

The whiny bitch is screaming "Why are you tasering me?" and John Kerry didn't notice? I guess he's gotten a little rusty since his days on point.

Well, That Pretty Much Nails It
— Ace

A study measures liberal and conservative attitudes on key issues.

It actually is, um, accurate, if rather obvious.

And the researcher, get this, does not try to just interpret the results to claim (baby-voice) "We'we bettew."

Extreme liberals, Dr. Haidt argues, attach almost no importance to the moral systems that protect the group. Because conservatives do give some weight to individual protections, they often have a better understanding of liberal views than liberals do of conservative attitudes, in his view.

Dr. Haidt, who describes himself as a moderate liberal, says that societies need people with both types of personality. ‘A liberal morality will encourage much greater creativity but will weaken social structure and deplete social capital,’ he said. ‘I am really glad we have New York and San Francisco — most of our creativity comes out of cities like these. But a nation that was just New York and San Francisco could not survive very long…’”

Nuance, for once, really, coming from a self-identifying nuance-loving liberal.

Ho, Hum: Billbray and Tancredo Introduce Doomed Legislation To End Sanctuary Cities, Make Illegal Immigration a Felony
— Ace

Dumb. Americans want to stop immigration without feeling they're "bad people" and without being punitive about this. So measures like this are not designed to actually be passed, but to convince us all how tough-on-illegals some tiny number of Congressmen are.

I'd far prefer a law that ended sanctuary cities along NJ's lines (check anyone arrested for a felony, don't check for stuff like reporting crime or domestic disturbances) which would actually have a chance in hell of attracting majority support.

This is crap which has no such chance. It doesn't even have the possibility of embarrassing Democrats and causing political fallout, because they can always say it's wrong to make it an actual felony to overstay a visa or cross a border illegally, and that will be enough of a reason to keep the majority on their side.

So this idiocy is pitched directly at *us*, because we're all fucking morons who don't know any better and fall for any stupid political stunts tossed our way.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, guys.

I can't even pretend like it's awesome for the irony. He did this this morning, Allah recorded it. Why, I don't know. I think he hates me.

Watch Out for DREAM Act This Week
— Gabriel Malor

Redstate reminds us (as did one of the co-bloggers last week) that the DREAM Act is back on the table. Keep an eye on your senators this week, maybe send them a note by email. They may think that they can let this one go if no one is looking.

Last 'Palooza Post, Promise
— LauraW.

Meeting so many of Ace's peeps in the flesh was very pleasant, but it took me a couple days to kind of process it. The experience still feels unresolved somehow.

Issues were brought up for me that I wanted to discuss further with some of you.

Kind of lengthy, so I'll leave it below the jump. more...

Norks Deny Syrian Nuclear Ties
— Dave In Texas

North Korea issues strong denial of allegations by unnamed US intelligence officials that it provided nuclear technology and expertise to Syria.

Those allegations surfaced after reports that Israeli forces attacked and destroyed facilities where the materials and technicians were in Syria.

Statements you can trust, from their Foreign Ministry.

The North "never makes an empty talk but always tells truth," the ministry said in the statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

I hope the Israelis learned a lot about the Pantsyr air defense system.

Might come in handy.
