Bar Etiquette: Take 2
— Open Blogger

Dear anonymous woman,

While I appreciate your effort in penning this lovely missive, and I really enjoyed your interesting syntax, I am puzzled that you refer to yourself as a "lady."

Ladies don't use words like "dick" and "douchy," and they certainly don't wander into bars expecting to sit down immediately, when others have been waiting patiently and politely.

And as long as we are on the subject, ladies don't go to bars without their husbands and get hammered.

bar note 001.jpg

The bartendress during this alleged brutality was witness to the proceedings, and responded with this:

Bar response.jpg

Although...I stopped in a week later and the bartender (also witness to the assault) felt that I had been insufficiently abused, so he invited me to the Easter brunch:

<img alt=

Hummus

1 15 ounce can of chick peas (cecci beans)
1 small clove of garlic
Cayenne pepper to taste (I use 1/8 teaspoon)
Pinch of Kosher salt
Juice of one large lemon
4 ounces Tahini (Sesame paste)
1 cup Extra Virgin olive oil (Do not use a very flavorful one...neutral is best)

In a food processor with the metal blade, blend the beans, garlic, salt, pepper and 1/2 the lemon juice. At least 10-15 seconds....you want it nice and smooth.

Add the tahini (be sure to stir it thoroughly before using) and process until smooth...another 10 seconds or so.

Gradually add to olive oil, starting very slowly, until the mixture is emulsified and nice and thick. It might not need the entire cup of oil, so go slowly and check frequently.

Taste and correct for salt and lemon juice. After you add more lemon juice it might require a bit more oil to thicken.

I have used lots of different tahini preparations, but recently found an organic one from Canada that is great.

The traditional scoop is pita, but try it with pretzels.

29 I graduated from Shippensburg University in 1992; my favorite bar was The Gingerbreadman, or as we called it The G-Man.  The bar had a dining section with table and booths but the bar itself had two sections.  The first section was the "Wood Bar" and the second had a formica topping.  The "Wood Bar" was closer to the entrance and by tacit agreement among the patrons was for the more prominent regulars.  You knew you had "arrived" when you could sit at the "Wood Bar", but on the weekends you still had to get there early....

32 I used to make Hummus when I worked at the Caravan Serai back in the 70's.  The owner was reported to be a Born Again Christian from Afghanistan.  He wasn't.  He was one of the cruelest men I think I have ever come across in my life and his nephew was positively homicidal.  Being a 15 year old kid I really didn't know any better.  The night that the Russians invaded Afghanistan was epic.... the meltdowns were award winning.  I learned a lot at that place.  I used to make Murgh Kabobs, Lamb Shanks, Dahl, Rice Pilaf, Baklava, and Pistachio Yogurt Tart all from scratch and in volume.  Loved the food.

34 I stopped by Costco today. The pork I bought 1 month ago at $2.00/lb is now $2.49/lb and the chicken during the same period has jumped from $0.99/lb to $1.29/lb. 60 The Salmon Mousse, yeah. I like Death bitching about the Americans: "You A-mer-icans. Always "telling you something..."

In one of my many contretemps with the sharp end of the medical establishment (just last week), as I pointed out, rather pointedly, that despite moving goalposts I am still not "overweight," my practitioner said, "Well, all Americans can stand to lose five pounds, or ten pounds."

I got to wondering. I've been in Germany, and Belgium, and Luxembourg and such, and I didn't hear anyone sitting around saying, "The trouble with us Dutch is that we really ought to..." or "What's really wrong with us French is..."

Has it become part of the "American character" to morbidly introspect every god-damned thing we might do to change or improve, however incrementally -- or is it just us adapting everyone else's inborn right to micromanage the Americans?

124 But how does the pocketbook thing work here?

If your a chick, you buy this big bag for an inflated price then put all your shit in it.

Then you make any prospective boyfriends carry it for you while you shop just to see if they're horny enough to look stupid carrying a purse around so they can maybe get in your pants.

See how that works?

Men just stuff shit in their pants and pockets and go. They don't ask the women to hold anything for them that they don't want fondled. (gently)

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Waiting For SMODOT) at April 13, 2014 12:55 PM (JS0vr)

125 So, CBD, how often do you get subjected to blatant anti-Semitism? I just ask because as I may have mentioned before my husband, who is a Frog-Wop but looks like a member of the Tribe, has been on the receiving end of anti-Semitism. It was shocking to us when it happened when we were apartment shopping in the Boston area. Truly bizarre.

126 About the only women I've seen that understand bar etiquette are 50 year old plus bar fly's.  They spend money, only leave the bar to smoke or piss and don't make themselves the center of attention. You get a pack of twentysomethings and they, as CBD pointed out, use the barstools as a coat rake while they roam. It's even worse if there's a band, then they'll also commandeer a table near the dance floor to sit their drinks on along with the barstools. The thirty and fourtysomethings are usually their with their spouse and another couple and sit at the bar nursing some shitty wine for an hour and scowl, like it's beneath them to be there.
Rant off.

Making racial/ethnic/religious slurs at your friends is an old American pastime.

Flat heads, bohunks, jew boys, chinks, etc. are terms of endearment among friends.

168 "I stopped by Costco today. The pork I bought 1 month ago at $2.00/lb is now $2.49/lb and the chicken during the same period has jumped from $0.99/lb to $1.29/lb."

The one thing you can absolutely predict is that the Derp-publican establishment won't bother to run one single ad about high food prices this campaign season.

I figured in 2012 that it was falling-off-a-log simple to run ads about high gas prices. Given their record ascent under Obama (fastest in history) and the fact that polls consistently showed it to be one of the top subjects of consumer concern.

Nope! Not a single ad from the GOP brain trust. You have to figure it'll be the same with food this year.

But, why should those types know or care about the retail price of beef when the beef that _they_ eat is a filet mignon at a Pennsylvania Avenue restaurant, with a lobbyist picking up the entire tab?
