How Jolly Won in One Chart
— CAC

David Jolly defied most predictions (including mine!) and beat back the better-funded, more recognized Alex Sink by just under a 2% margin. His campaign staff, which had gotten some nasty shots from "concerned Republicans", stuck to the basics and got their voters out.

Democrats were overjoyed at their dominating presence in the in-person early vote (turning in ballots at an eight point clip better than the Republicans) and were cautious about their performance in the mail-in/absentee returns (they trailed Republicans by about five points in the end after keeping the margin to just 2% for much of the reporting cycle). With over 70% of the vote already in before polls opened yesterday, Team Jolly needed a big Tuesday turnout.

...and he got it, with Election Day voters giving him a 54%-42% cudgel over Sink.

It is important to note that Republicans held their own in the total vote cast before election day. Sure, they got swamped at the early vote nearly 2-1, but that made up less than 3% of all votes cast. The biggest chunk of the vote- absentees- favored Sink by just under 2,000 votes, meaning that the total pre-Election Day vote only ended up favoring her by just over 2%, far short of the gap insinuated by PPP. Democrats have put a lot of stock in running up the tally early. In their first big test of a cycle already showing them disfavor, they failed.

60 Posted by: rfichoke at March 12, 2014 12:34 PM (2G73v) The key is to mobilize as many voters as possible via whatever means you have. Democrats (trying to get LIVs) focus on early voting and absentee ballot voting. Republicans tend to focus more on election day (I suspect this comes in part from appreciation of the system itself, but I digress.) You're right that we'll have to mobilize more voters in the early voting period (or simply eliminate it and/or reign it in as some have called or because it leads to "political ignorance" to use one of the VC guy's terms). But the key will still be mobilizing voters, which was done here.

62 @34 - that may just be to make sure the Ukrainians don't try anything in response. I think Putin's got most of what he wants at this point, but if the Ukrainians fight back he'll take the rest of the place without a thought. And we'll do nothing, because we can do nothing, and because Obama's decided (was there ever any question?) that paying off his grievance groups is more important than a credible military. If this scares Western Europe into vacuum-bagging their Greens and getting the frack on, then in the end it will work to the West's advantage. I'm not confident.

So people who would ordinarily want to punish the liberal can say "a pox on both their houses" and feel good about themselves. In principle, it can be done to help conservatives. In practice it isn't.

It's not enough either to count on poll watchers and monitors to keep them honest elsewhere,.either.  Democrats have shown no compunction, as in Philadelphia where they physically ejected GOP pollwatchers and then blatantly forged votes.

That has had a great deal of effect on the country. In this case, we have not, probably will never[/] recover from the damage that Clinton did..., and derivatively has done via Obama, and perhaps Hillary yet to come. It is impossible to say what other outcomes there might have been, but the election of Clinton has done immeasurable damage. But, that's OK, because Perot voters felt 'good' about themselves. 198 Actually, the concern about "found ballots" is not a problem in most of the Florida precincts.  The Supervisors of Elections in most counties, including Pinellas, are generally pretty above board.

The problem counties are St. Lucie and Miami-Dade.  Those are run a lot like Chicago.  Miami-Dade managed to buck the trends of every other county in 2012 and had 70K voters switch from GOP in 2008 to Dem in 2012.  Amazingly, that was the exact margin of victory for Obama in 2012.

The St. Lucie SoE certified the election results before the recount was complete, meaning West lost even though he had more votes after the recount.

225 For much of our history, America was a predominantly agrarian society. Law makers therefore took into account that November was perhaps the most convenient month for farmers and rural workers to be able to travel to the polls. The fall harvest was over, (remember that spring was planting time and summer was taken up with working the fields and tending the crops) but in the majority of the nation the weather was still mild enough to permit travel over unimproved roads. Why Tuesday? Since most residents of rural America had to travel a significant distance to the county seat in order to vote, Monday was not considered reasonable since many people would need to begin travel on Sunday. This would, of course, have conflicted with Church services and Sunday worship. Why the first Tuesday after the first Monday? Lawmakers wanted to prevent election day from falling on the first of November for two reasons. First, November 1st is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics. Second, most merchants were in the habit of doing their books from the preceding month on the 1st. Apparently, Congress was worried that the economic success or failure of the previous month might prove an undue influence on the vote!" And the number of people who are out of that zone during repeating elections should basically be 0 (otherwise I would seriously question why you're voting in an area you can't be in for several years at a time.) 238 I have to say, the NC Senate primary is making me feel despair.  How the fuck in the name all creation can conservatives seriously think about nominating a man who was just found **PERSONALLY** LIABLE FOR CIVIL FRAUD?  Brannon is dead, toast, fucked in the general election.  You cannot survive that, not in a swing state against an incumbent with money to burn.  It's Tillis or die.  I don't love Thom Tillis as a candidate, but he's got the right profile, he's conservative (certainly no RINO), and he can win.  Literally the only thing Brannon has going for him is kneejerk anti-establishmentarianism of his supporters

The most aggravating thing about Brannon's supporters here on this blog are the people who try to handwave away a fucking fraud verdict by saying "oh, the jury was stacked with liberals!" or some bullshit like that.  Newsflash: if Brannon is our general election candidate in NC and that's our explanation, the race is already over.  Nobody will believe it.  Hell, even *I* don't really believe it, it sounds like excuse-mongering.  Even worse are the people who are whistling past the graveyard, trying to pretend like it won't be a hammer Hagan and the Democrats (and outside groups and the MSM, but I repeat myself) use to destroy Brannon.  Guess what?  If you've been found liable for fraud in a court of law, low-information voters are going to quite justifiably conclude that you're an untrustworthy liar.  Which you may in fact be.

Every single person who continues to support Brannon here ought to explain their 'theory of the case,' i.e. how they see him winning in a tough swing state race against an incumbent with that on his record.  Hagan may be unpopular, but so were Claire McCaskill and Mike Bennet...both won because the GOP nominated clowns.  We really want to do this again in the name of 'purity?'  How about finding a candidate who doesn't have a recent civil fraud verdict on his record, then?

247 >>>yep

Terry Mac is shady scum, but even he doesn't have that kind of personal fraud verdict on his record.  (Yet, at least...we can always hope.)  Moreover, MacAuliffe is/was one of the most powerfully-connected, cash-rich Democrats in the country and was running for an open seat against a horrible candidate in a state that now tilts Democrat...and he barely won.

I can tell you this much: if MacAuliffe had been found personally liable in a court of law for defrauding his investors and stealing their money only a year or so before the election, he wouldn't have won the race, and that's in spite of all the Dem-favoring factors listed above.

249 Thank you, would you email that to Hammer? I've been accused of being a little biased because I am supporting the only candidate that can beat Hagan, like you I am getting tired of the know nothing attitude of some of our friends. Time to fish or cut bait. Beat HAGAN! Posted by: Nip Sip at March 12, 2014 01:17 PM (0FSuD) You insist upon completely and utterly and totally misrepresenting the actual jury verdict, right up to the point that you are nudging the line of defamation with your toe, and then you turn around and oh so casually state that hey I could have Tillis over for a meetup but real life is in the way. Yeah, you'll forgive me for harboring a deep suspicion that not only are you a little biased but that you are on someone's payroll. Here. I'll spell it out for you very slowly so that you can comprehend what I am saying. My issues are with your repeated insistence that Brannon was found guilty of stealing when that is NOT WHAT HAPPENED and that you ignore every single person who has attempted to explain to you the difference between a civil and a criminal verdict. Your refusal to comprehend something so basic calls into question the entirety of your credibility on this issue. Guess what? This is causing me physical pain to type, but Jeff B set out accurately what happened and the problems that Brannon will face. Had you, the oh so very particular you, done the same, then nearly every single objections that I and others are making would disappear. But no. You, the oh so very particular you, insist upon conflating a finding of civil liability with a jury finding of guilt. You did that. No one else. Just you. JeffB, I would certainly hope that you are able to comprehend the distinction between objecting to a gross mischaracterization and supporting a candidate. Those are not even remotely the same things. It does not constitute "handwaving" to point out that Nip Sip is being remarkably disingenuous in his repeated statements, which have been repeatedly corrected, that a jury found Brannon guilty.

"But to some, Tillis is just not conservative enough?"

Tillis also said he thought that ObamaCare was a good idea, it just couldn't be funded.

Good idea?  Implication that more taxes may need to be raised to fund it?

I can see where people would get that idea.

@ 241 - "Every single person who continues to support Brannon here ought to explain their 'theory of the case,' i.e. how they see him winning in a tough swing state race against an incumbent with that on his record. Hagan may be unpopular, but so were Claire McCaskill and Mike Bennet...both won because the GOP nominated clowns. We really want to do this again in the name of 'purity?' How about finding a candidate who doesn't have a recent civil fraud verdict on his record, then?"

Latest polling has Brannon tied with Tillis again, AND neck-and-nack with Hagan in the general (doing as well as ANY of the other GOPers, including Tillis.

Brannon took a hit early in Feb when the typical media negative reporting took place and the decision came out.  He has completely recovered to where he was at before it, however.

The civil case is not something a lot of people understand, so I doubt it really sways a lot of voters very much.  It's hard to get too worked up about a guy who was part of a company that relied on venture capital and which went belly up.  After all, that kind of stuff happens all the time.  Half the people living in the RTP area have probably either started a company, worked for a company, or invested in a company that has had that happen.  They know it's part of life.  Having investors who lost money get cranky about losing money makes some noise, but doesn't exactly cast the pall of "unforgivable moral opprobium" upon him.

255 >>>Brannon took a hit early in Feb when the typical media negative reporting took place and the decision came out. He has completely recovered to where he was at before it, however.

"Completely recovered," eh?  Perhaps in the eyes of his tea party supporters, who are willing to forgive almost anything for someone with the right ideological positions.  Want to bet that the general electorate -- once they're introduced to this scandal via countless attack ads and hostile news reports -- won't feel the same way?

>>>The civil case is not something a lot of people understand, so I doubt it really sways a lot of voters very much.

Um, are we on different planets here?  People can understand a simple story, and the simple story is going to be "candidate was found guilty** of fraud by a jury."  That's devastating.  Believe it or not, swing voters don't like the idea of sending who already has a putatively PREESTABLISHED record of dishonesty to Washington.  The ideological issues that people like us care about will come second.

**Yes I know the word is technically inaccurate, but again, if you're dickering about technicalities ("he wasn't found GUILTY because it was a civil trial not a criminal trial!") you are, again, losing.

I am, which is why I have been careful to choose my words accurately. (Being an attorney also helps.)  But here's the thing: if nothing else, Nip Sip is giving you a preview of how the Brannon fraud verdict will actually be represented in public and among most voters.  Not hardcore partisans, perhaps, but there are very few of those in any general election, even midterms.  No, most people aren't going to sit around and calmly evaluate arguments like "it was a civil trial, and only a majorty of the jury was required for a finding of liability, as opposed to the unanimity of a criminal case!"  They're going to boil it down: "huh, guy was found guilty of defrauding his investors."  Trying to swim against that tide -- which is, I have to emphasize really bad even in its kindest, most Brannon-friendly form -- is like trying to scale Niagara Falls in a wetsuit.

I'll have Hagan's lie played again and again and again and let them create their own attack ads.

But I'm sure career politician Tillis has no skeletons at all in his closet right.......  Again I ask, what is his position on buttfucking??

Why be for Tillis, there's a better question.  What has he committed to on the issues?

Last I saw, polling two candidates from different parties head to head isn't limited to calling "tea party supporters."

You're free to believe what you like, but the facts on the ground in NC so far don't appear to support your conclusions.

260 Hey, look at that Overby number. This is what happens when you let the opposition split your vote. They win, you lose. GOP won because its very possible that more D's went for Overby than voting R. Soooo .... lets encourage all of our D friends and family, whom couldn't stand to vote for an R, to find their own Overby. And vote for them. While we stick to our guns. And hope that our candidates don't say something monumentally stupid and sink their ship, and our navy in the process of sinking their own ship. Very tight message control for us folks ... if we can't find a good candidate whom will take the vote by storm, then offer the D's a way to vote in protest against the D without voting R. You can't make changes if you are not in power to make the change. Lets not fuck it up between now and election day. Please?

261 Early voting really disturbs me, I think Red State Governors need to dial it back.

I would argue the Constitution is pretty clear about when there's an Election Day, not a period anytime that's convenient for someone. When I see people voting months before an election, I don't think that's healthy for the Republic.  Lots of opportunity for fraud.

I'm glad Republicans are doing better in this area, but this new type of voting is a big headwind for us because it gives Democrats months to get the proles to the poll instead of making it a single day.

I believe you get a much higher quality voter when  there's a single day of elections where the person actually has to go to the polls to vote.

262 >>>Last I saw, polling two candidates from different parties head to head isn't limited to calling "tea party supporters."

The problem is that the vast majority of those being polled right now have no idea about the Brannon fraud verdict (in fact, I'd guess that a near-majority of GOP primary voters don't know about it yet...never underestimate the "LI" in "LIV").  If he wins the nomination though, believe me...they'll find out.  It will be The Only Story, especially for a candidate with almost no money and little institutional support to push his own countervailing message.

I've seen this movie before, and it rarely ends well.

Jeff and Nip sip:

I'm not denying it's a problem and an obstacle.  What sane person would?  But I'll support a family man with 5 kids who is a doctor any day of the week over some party hack that is just another vote for amnesty and doing whatever the fuck GOPe wants him to.

And yeah, I think he can still beat Hagan.  It's firing up the base that counts in off year elections.  And this guy can fire up the base like crazy.  Tillis is expected to win, yay yay.  We need some new blood.

Late to the gate, but for the sake of history:

"The biggest chunk of the vote- absentees- favored Sink by just under 2,000 votes"

Which is actually a bit worrisome because the report in the WaPo yesterday said Team Republican had turned in a few thousand more ballots than the Democrats.

Which, if true, math would indicate Project Orca 2.0 IDed thousands of voters as Republican gets to turn out, who actually voted Democrat.
