Is "Captain America: Winter Soldier" Something?
— Ace

I'm bored of superhero movies myself -- I still watch 'em, mind you, but not with any particular excitement about it -- but the new Captain America is getting 88% "fresh" ratings at Rotten Tomatoes, and quite a few reviewers claiming it's the best Marvel movie either since Iron Man 1, or the Avengers. Or maybe it's the best Marvel movie ever. Or the best superhero movie ever.

Eh, I doubt that. But still, it sounds like it's not awful (like Man of Steel) or competent-but-forgettable (like Thor: The Dark World).

It's done boffo box office in its early overseas opening. ("Boffo" is an industry term meaning "20% above expectations.")

I'll probably see it. I didn't bother with Iron Man 3 or Thor 2, but this one interests me. I'll let you know.

I've had this link open all week and it's time to close it. Not a big thing, but in this Washington Post blog entry on France's so-called Tea Party, the writer claims this:

Steeped in conservative rage and tasting of grass roots, a political backlash has traditional politicians and the news media asking the once-unthinkable: Is le tea party brewing in France?

If it were, it would be populated by the likes of Catherine Mas-Mezeran, a Parisian mother of three who wrinkles her nose at the mention of President François Hollande. She calls him “the Socialist,” which, technically, he is. But if President Obama had the birthers, Hollande now has the baptismists.

The head of the Parti Socialist, and a lifelong socialist (when he wasn't a communist), is technically a socialist?

What would be required for him to be a genuine one?

The left is just so used to dishonestly denying that socialists are socialists that they even do so when a guy actually has the title, "Head of the Socialist Party of France."

Those welfare cheats are reportedly in jail.

I don't really want to link this -- I hate giving Politico what it wants -- but they recently did a story on Sharyl Attkisson entitled Media Career Path: Cry Liberal bias. Yes, it suggests what that headline implies it does: That liberal bias is just something people "cry" to get attention. Completely fictitious, you know.

I wouldn't bother clicking on it. The headline is enough.

Oh you'll love this: Tom Friedman interviewing Hillary Clinton. No but seriously, enjoy Hillary kill two minutes with nonsensical babbling when she's asked to identify anything she's proud of from her term at SecState.

Great explainer on the left's lies on the Hobby Lobby case. Similar to the one Gabe did, but better, because this guy isn't a Turncoat when he posts at the Federalist.

Rand Paul still has a bad habit of repeating cherished-but-false leftwing agitprop talking points about American foreign policy. He should probably stop that.

This kid must be a reader.

Long piece -- but good -- on the need to actually, get this, hire better teachers and, importantly, fire worse ones.

60% of Intel's employees who donated to the gay marriage cause, either pro or anti, donated in favor of Prop 8.

Let's ban Intel.

No, of course we won't do that. As Allah suggests, you don't have to shoot all looters to establish the point that looting won't be tolerated. You just have to hang one of the ringleaders in the town's center plaza. The rest will get the idea.

Mark Pryor: Why sure I'd vote for Obamacare again. Why do you ask?

Most people think NBC is the most biased network. That is debatable -- I think that dishonor might belong to ABCNews, which had really better think about what it is putting at risk (Disney, Marvel, Star Wars) with its relentless and flagrant propaganda.

Nice corporation you have there, Disney. Be a real shame if someone were to boycott your trillions of dollars of non-news products, wouldn't it?

You might want to consider ABCNews' Progressive Politics Animal House operation if you're on the fence about seeing Captain America.

Democrat Representative Jim Moran: Gee Willickers, Congressmen sure do deserve a big pay raise.

Democrat Senate hopeful Bruce Braley: Sitting down with my trial-law clients for dinner is really no different than farm work, if you think about it. Or, preferably, don't.

I don't want to start any scurrilous rumors, but I'm pretty sure Bruce Braley is actually brain damaged.

Oh, and, yeah? That Brazilian poll that said "We're totally into raping scantily dressed women" that everyone linked except me/us? It turns out it's largely wrong, as I imagined it was.

Minor, minor content warning for this. I don't know why this squirrel does this, but this squirrel just keeps effing with and attacking a snake (identified by one of the witnesses as a rattlesnake, but I don't know about that).

The squirrel, for reasons I can't guess, is just determined to pick a fight with this snake. He thinks he's Rikki Tikki Tavi or something.

Just so you know: The squirrel appears to be unharmed at the end. The "content warning" is for the snake attempting to bite the squirrel, which I don't think it actually manages to do.

Then again, this squirrel could have pitched over dead from poison five seconds after the end of this video.

I don't know what this snake did to piss this squirrel off so much.

This is one badass squirrel. It has the soul of a honey badger.

Squirrels, Nemeses of Snakes. Buzzion informs::

Depending on the type of squirrel it could actually be immune to the snake venom.

Adult squirrels are not the snakes' prey, Rundus said in a telephone interview. The adults have a protein in their blood that allows them to survive the snake venom, and they have been known to attack and injure snakes, biting and kicking gravel at them.

Who knew.

38 Saw "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" last night. The lefty critics proclaiming how this is the most political Marvel and attacks the government's spying efforts had me a bit worried that I was going to be preached at for two hours in between things blowing up. Luckily, that isn't the case. If you seen the trailer, you've seen most of Captain America's arguments against the program, which turns out to be a secret project that is at Bond villain levels of evil (as close as I can write without spoiling the real villains or their plan). Most of the film is wall-to-wall set pieces of great action. Is the best Marvel film? Not better than "The Avengers," which had the benefit of a half-dozen films setting up the material. But it is extremely lean and mean and well told by the Russo brothers (who were mainly TV directors for "Arrested Development" and "Community"), especially compared to "Iron Man 3" or "Thor: The Dark World." Make sure to stay through the credits for two sequences: the 2nd one is not that important (it could have easily been in a scene in the final seconds of the main feature), but the first one (after the animated credits) is a full set-up for "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

41 ref Squirrel v Snake. Squirrels are absurdly quick. A rattler will kill (and eat) a squirrel but it'll only get the squirrel with a surprise attack. In this case, with the squirrel aware of the snake, it's just FASTER than it and can always evade the bites.

I don't know enough about how that is going to play out to offer you a good opinion. Being a PA would probably offer fair job security, there will certainly be demand for providers (physician extenders, alternative providers) of all stripes. There are two main things I think worth considering- scope of practice (what you will be allowed to do) and reimbursement. I just don't know enough to predict with any confidence where those two elements are going to end up. It might be that PA's will have more leeway to do challenging and fun things, and the compensation may rise as they fill more roles traditionally held by MD's. I just can't say with confidence.

93 The Friedman-Hillary clip is most revealing in the first few seconds, when Hillary acts like she's "oh so sharp" for "catching" Friedman inserting a potentially pointed question into a fawn. And Friedman gives this little lapdog headshake and cringing smile being "caught" as "oh so wicked" like a fat girl who acts like eating a chocolate bar is doing something so "naughty" as to make her into some kind of femme fatale. Then he acts grateful as she deigns to discourse ad bullshitum all around the point. I actually think that Friedman's so stupid that he accidentally implied a sharper point than he intended, and had initially thought he was just giving her an opportunity to give a Miss Teenage Secretary of State answer about all the wonderful things she wants to talk about. Disgusting display all around really.

136 "in this Washington Post blog entry on France's so-called Tea Party"

With the headline:

"Social conservatives are mobilizing in France, leading to talk of a tea party"

Except that the American tea party didn't start with socons. It started with fiscal cons who were pissed off about higher taxes and fatter deficits to bail out the executives and shareholders of reckless private sector firms.

(TEA == "Taxed Enough Already". Ask Rick Santelli, who is the guy whose outraged televised comments about corporate-welfare bailouts directly led to the first Tea Party gatherings.)

So, apart from being historically and politcally illiterate cretins, the WaPo are bang on the mark as usual.

137 "104 I'm just hoping against hope that New Gods gets made, with a really good director, before the superhero-movie trend burns out." The superhero trend won't burn out for a long, long time. Since the first X-Men, the genre has only gotten stronger over the last 14 years. Because, intelligently, the filmmakers took the superhero film and started applying it to various genres. So rather than simply a "comic book movie," they branched out into more successful fields. "Thor" takes the genre into the realm of fantasy. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" plays with the 70s conspiracy thrillers. "Guardians of the Galaxy" is space adventure.

I read today in an interview with them that the actresses are now 17 and 16, whereas the book characters were 11 and 8 at the start (the show aged everyone by 2-4 years, so you didn't have a 13-year old Danaerys having sex with Khal Drogo). Martin originally planned a 5 year jump after the 3rd book so all of the young main characters would be 18-21, but he abandoned it after he realized that he set too many plots in motion that were immediate threats.

178 Cancel the credit cards you have together right away. Get your own. Don't let her rack up charges that you will be eventually 50% responsible for. Get a new bank account ASAP. Make sure these dates etc are spelled out in your divorce decree. Posted by: DangerGirl at April 04, 2014 09:22 PM (GrtrJ) This +1000. Left my wife and got up before dawn and started calling and canceling cards. I could because my name was on them. Next time I see her she couldn't resist saying with annoyance, "You canceled those cards real quick, didn't you?" You KNOW she tried to use them right away but I was faster. The fact that she mentioned it meant she had a meltdown when it got denied at the store. In short: cancel those credit cards five minutes ago.

This Mozilla lynching should wake up a lot of people. But I doubt it will. Years ago, a couple of years out of college, my jaw dropped agape during one little episode where I learned what true totalitarians these "progressives" were. Ace was talking about "Other-izing". Yeah, they do that, but if there's any group who are truly Other, it's these prog lunatics.

Back then, I was in a a discussion with a some of these people and they suggested that parents should have to get a license to have children. I realized what a horrible tyranny that would be and thought surely they just haven't thought it through. So, in a Jonathan Swift Modest Proposal style, I said you know, on second thought, I agree and then proposed the most Orwellian, totalitarian system of state control of children and making babies I could come up with.

Guess what. They had no idea what I was doing, agreed with it, and said it perhaps didn't go far enough! That woke me up to what we're dealing with. These people now control academia, the media, and the Democratic Party apparatus. Their takeover is no complete, and we're seeing what they will do.

If things keep up, in 5 years, you won't believe where we'll be in terms of their totalitarian utopia.

This sound cliche and trite, but it's true. These people hate America, what we stand for (or did stand for) and our founding principles. They hate it -- these things are the cross to their Dracula. The symbols of traditional Americana, think John Wayne, Clint Eastwood as say Josey Wales, the manly, independent, pioneer, master of your own destiny thing, are anathema to them. They absolute hate it.

And they're going to destroy it, hell, try to strike it from collective memory.

204 So a further thought on the laughable WaPo piece on the French political realignment. Left completely unmentioned was Marine Le Pen, whose rightist party was the single biggest winner and picked up several times as many offices as analysts had predicted.

And what was part of the winning formula for Le Pen is something that has been discussed a few times in the past here with regard to future GOP strategy: unabashed economic nationalism.

Talking forthrightly about those ordinary French citizens who are being screwed by transnationalist globalist economics. Guess what? Those people turn up to vote! And did. For Le Pen's party. Responding to her sympathetic rhetoric.

Her economic agenda is not entirely intellectually or analytically consistent, but it sure does have street level appeal. Can't make any policies of any sort without first winning elections.

209 Gophers will do the same thing as the squirrel, but with rattlesnakes. It was probably a mama squirrel defending her nest. The snake could have been a hog nosed snake. Similar markings as a rattler, but non-venomous. Had a damn squirrel sneak into my BBQ grill through the little slot for the rotisserie and built her nest in there. Now I've got two or three little squirrels living in my grill. THIS SHALL NOT STAND! Posted by: LFW - Honorary Pointy Eared Vulcan at April 04, 2014 09:06 PM (vVSOO) I agree about it not being a rattlesnake. They will normally hold their rattle erect and begin shaking it to warn off the attacker. They will definitely do it when coiled. Also, the head doesn't look like a normal, venomous snake's head. They tend to be flatter. It's hard to tell for sure because of the distance away from the camera. The same bunch that are complaining about Paulina Gretzky being on the cover of Golf Digest also complained about Holly Sonders who works for the Golf Channel. She's lovely eye candy too. Sonders did play college golf though. Posted by: puddleglum at April 04, 2014 09:16 PM (8SsiG) Sonders is getting jiggy with Eric Kuselias who used to be the host of the show she is on. She's also still doing the horizontal mambo with him.

251 Japanese anger also focused on the embargoes which the United States had slapped on American exports to Japan. By the end of 1940 Washington had cut it off from all vital war materials except petroleum. As far back as 1938 the United States had placed Japan under the so-called moral embargo. The termination of on January 20, 1940, of the Treaty of Commerce and Navigation of 1911 removed the legal obstacle to actual restrictions. Beginning in July 1940, Washington placed all exports of aviation fuel and high-grade scrap iron and steel under federal license and control. In September 1940, after Japanese forces moved into northern Indochina, Roosevelt finally announced an embargo on scrap iron and steel to Japan. Thus, by the end of that year, Japan had begun to experience a real pinch and a shadow of genuine fear mingled with its resentment of these discriminatory measures.

267 When in personal /family crisis, compartmentalization is key. From personal experience. Make a conscious effort to spend time thinking about X for a while, then Y, then Z. You need to keep your shit together, if you try to process everything all at once you'll never have any peace and you'll make poor decisions when it's very important that you make the right ones.

I've never written a Prayer on a calendar before.  Yours shall be the first.
You're scheduled for a "Monday-Thru"... lol.  Just kidding!

Our Lord finds us in the most precarious of positions.  Might our collective Faith allow for the Soul of Harrison to be at ease, as he finds himself amongst our wishful love.

When you've returned Our Brother, may he be as Spry, Witty and Loving as You'd left him!

...In Jesus' Name, I Pray.

288 Regarding the squirrel video:

Obviously the underreported North American Valet and Rattlesnake Hunting Squirrel, a very desirable companion for the well-to-do photographer/snake hunter. Notice early in the video the lens wipe that the squirrel is carrying for the photog and of course the well honed snake handling skills. This well-trained squirrel is not one for the skillet, no sirree Bob. This critter is prime rut material. I'll bet you could make some big bucks off this one's spooge.

Who's up for milking it?
