NASCAR: Race Day in Ft. Worth, TX 4-06-14- [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

Good afternoon and welcome to the NASCAR thread.

Today's race is brought to us by the fine folks at Duck Commander (God Bless their furry little selves.) and will be run at Texas Motor Speedway, a 1.5 mile track.

Last week was a doozy in Martinsville with, IIRC, a total of 14 caution flags on the track and a lot of bumping taking place in a very tight pit row.

Speaking of pit row, here's what Kenseth's 180 looked like from inside the pit:

Jimmie Johnson led for a total of 296 of 500 laps but lost the lead to Clint Bowyer in a beautiful move that saw Bowyer's lightning fast reflexes capitalize on the slightest error on Johnson's part. Bowyer, however, lost the lead with a big delay in pit row when the crew had trouble getting one of the tires off the car.

Between cautions flags, and chunks of rubber flying everywhere, drama was in abundance, but the most drama arose from an altercation between Keselowski and Kurt Busch following contact in pit row.

Here's what happened on pit row:

Acting like little babies, they took this one back out on the track.

And, for a little added drama, here's some uncensored audio from inside Busch's car.

In the end, Kurt Busch was the winner, his first win in 83 races.

Congrats to Kurt Busch and the Stewart-Haas Racing Team.

The excitement of the win, however, was short-lived as Busch suffered a tire issue which resulted in a fiery nose-first crash into the wall during qualifying in Texas, destroying the car. Thankfully, Busch is okay and will be participating in the race today.

Today's race looks to be plagued by rain but they have five of the new Titan dryer trucks on hand in case they are needed.

This week's pole position belongs to Tony Stewart posting a speed of 195.454 mph who edged out Brad Keselowski at 195.419 mph. The full lineup can be viewed here.

And, because it's the Duck Commander race, what would a post be without a little Uncle Si thrown into the mix?

1 Martinsville was a good race, I like the short tracks. This also the first race with the new Big Hoss TV at Texas Motor Speedway. Pretty sure that's currently the biggest jumbotron in America.

6 Nascar annoyingly forced the Nascarnomics site to remove all of its Nascar data and analysis. It was a great site. Guy is a statistician and race fan and used his data skills to analyze Nascar's TV ratings. It was all public data that had been released in news stories about TV ratings. He probably was in the right, but he didn't have the means to fight Nascar's lawyers. Also he is a fan, so he thought he was helping Nascar. I think the situation is that Nascar is not happy about the declining TV ratings in recent years. Nascarnomics had all sorts of great analysis looking at how track length, caution #s, rain delays, race time, race winner, etc, etc affected the ratings. Guy was just combining things he loved -- Nascar and data analysis. But something he did pissed off Nascar and they shut him down. 56 Breitbart's "verticals" strategy of local content is interesting. They launched Breitbart Texas and Breitbart London in February. Now it's Breitbart California. And the press release makes it clear this won't be the last one. One of the things Breitbart did so well personally was to make conservatives feel welcome even in places where often they weren't, where the Left tries to purge us. Whenever the Left gets a majority in a place they try to purge us, tell us we don't belong there. Fuck that. They don't get to claim California all for themselves just cause they are the majority. I have every right to live and enjoy Cali, too. They don't get to define who is California or New Yorker, etc, etc.

67 While Pale Moon is based off of Mozilla, it is an independent build. Since Mozilla wasn't getting paid anyway, it is a way of denying them usage of their brand name. Would love to see someone make a version that has anti-SSM branding.

84 It got warmer this afternoon. After looking for a half hour, I finally found my garden sweatshirt, heavy pair of socks & other clothes I marked with a G to wear outside. Some things I never thought to, have holes in them, now I have a few pairs of old camisoles & things with that G because thorns tear them up too. I was up before 5 & went out early & it was 31. Now it's sunny & in mid 50s. Time to start cleaning up my garden. I'm afraid to look at how many are dead. I don't remember if we had snow before or after subzero temperatures in December & January. I wear neck collar & wrist braces outside. BBL tonight. I have to tell Shredded Chi & Garrett I found one Joe Jackson CD tonight.

There are still several races on the schedule that have yet to find title sponsors. There are still several cars in the Nationwide and Sprint series that don't have primary sponsors... Attendance has been down for several years. High fuel costs really hit the lower-middle class fan, and they can't afford to drive to multiple races per year anymore.

During Michael Waltrip's grid-walk he spoke to one driver (ICRW) who said he was killing time eating tacos. Tacos! I would have imagined that they would avoid anything such as tacos prior to climbing into a car for several hours.

101 I saw some good analysis on the ratings for this year, which are generally down. Big problem was Daytona. Daytona's rain delay severely hurt ratings. Nascar's model is that Daytona does far better ratings than any other race. It attracts all the casuals. There's a decay model. Daytona sparks interest and the races after it show high, but steadily declining ratings until it gets down to a steady core as the casuals get their fill and peal off. Since Daytona had such low ratings this year due to the rain delay, every other race after it has been lower than normal. Daytona seems to have done a worse job than normal at exciting the casuals. Daytona is the big moment once a year where the casual sports fan looks at Nascar and that's Nascar's big moment to sell itself and say what the big stories are this year and who the new stars are and stuff like that. There's also an issue that ESPN is not pushing Nascar at all this year. ESPN lost out on the TV contracts. Starting next year it's all NBC and Fox splitting everything Nascar and ESPN won't have any races, no Nationwide, no nothing. So ESPN is in the Nascar-is-dead-to-me phase of the divorce and pretty much pretending that Nascar doesn't exist. This happened when to the NHL when they left ESPN and they took a big hit for a couple years in the ratings before they and the fans learned to route around ESPN's total lack of interest. ESPN is not in the business of promoting sports it doesn't have the TV rights, too.

103 Yeah, Nascar's fanbase skews, no surprise, somewhat lower income than average. Also somewhat whiter than average. Those are the people that have been crushed by the Great Recession. And that's why attendance has been off. It's not clear why lower attendance has also led to lower TV ratings. But partly it's just making Nascar less a part of people's lives. Somebody who used to go to 1 or 2 races a year, probably was sure to watch the other 34 on TV. As they can't afford to attend the races, they seem to have withdrawn interest in watching as well. Just less of a connection. NHL and MLS have fanbases that skew upper-income and white and they have done very well during the Great Recession. I think MLS is about to announce yet another expansion team, this time in Atlanta. Great Recession has hollowed out the middle class. Brands and business that served the middle and lower-middle class have really taken a beating. But life is good for high end luxury brands.
