"Perhaps, like me, you have wondered how it is that so many people, otherwise honest, can adopt without demur the Orwellian anti-language of Political Correctness; how it is that so many people, otherwise rational, can adopt without demur the paradoxes, self-contradictions and logical absurdities involved in relativistic morality, materialistic ontology, subjective epistemology, and the other nuggets of vacuous blither forming the foundations of modern thought; how it is that so many people, otherwise possessing good taste, can without demur fund and support and praise the blurry aberrations of modern art, praise ugliness, despite beauty; how it is that so many people, otherwise good and peaceful, can praise and support and excuse the hellish enormities and mass murders of figures like Che and Mao and Stalin and Castro; or can view with cold eye the piles of tiny corpses heaped outside abortion mills, and make such enemies of the human race into heroes; or can rush to the defense of Mohammedan terrorists with freakish shrieks of 'Islamophobia!' and 'Racist!' even thought to be wary of Jihadists bent on your destruction is rational rather than phobic, and even thought Mohammedanism is a religion, not a race; how otherwise happy, moral, reasonable and decent people can not merely excuse sexual perversion, but will be swept up in a fervor of righteous indignation even if someone points out the biological or Biblical reality of the situation; and likewise excuse lies in their leaders, and adulteries, and abuses of power, and abuses of drugs, and any number of things these otherwise ordinary people would never do themselves."And, finally, perhaps, like me, you have wondered why it is that these people who are otherwise civil nonetheless can neither explain their positions nor stop talking, and their talk consists of nothing, nothing, nothing aside from childish personal attacks, slanders, sneers, and accusation, accusation, accusation. Why are they so angry? Why are they so noisy? Why are they so blissfully unaware of the vice, injustice, ugliness and evil they support?

Why Harry Reid Hates, Hates, HATES, HATES the Koch Brothers
It's not personal - he's just a good soldier following his party's Alinskyite strategy.
According to the Times, Democrats are convinced that Koch-bashing is a "politically shrewd" endeavor, and is grounded in "Democratic-funded research." The Times editorial board has been beating this drum for weeks, denouncing the Koch brothers and their "right-wing political zeppelin," and all but pleading with their readers to donate to cash-poor Democrats.
Reid was especially moved by a recent presentation at the Senate Democratic retreat emphasizing the need to "pick a villain." The majority leader's lunatic outbursts on the Senate floor are intended to raise the Kochs' public profile and, more importantly, to rally the Democratic base, specifically the pro-cancer wing.
Switched at birth: Harry Reid and the Unhappy Idol

Men between the ages of 25 and 54 are in their prime working years. Generally speaking, they're too old for college and too young for retirement. In February 2008, 87.4 percent of men in that demographic had jobs.
Six years later, only 83.2 percent of men in that bracket are working.
Whatever Happened to the Antiwar Movement?
"Where have all the protesters gone, long time passing"
"Gone to #OCCUPY, everyone."
Antiwar Movement, RIP November 4, 2008.
One might almost think that the antiwar movement was all about politics, not principle. That it was really an anti-Bush, anti-Republican movement. And that once a Democrat was in the White House, its purpose had been served and the protest signs went into the trash. There is precedent for this, as we have written before. The anti-Vietnam war movement, which also was celebrated by the press, wasn't really a movement against the Vietnam war. It was led mostly by people who were not at all opposed to the war, but wanted the other side to win. The rank and file were not so much anti-war as they were anti-draft. On the day the draft was abolished, the anti-Vietnam war movement ended. Whatever you think of the merits of the Vietnam war, there never was anything noble or idealistic about the anti-war movement.
And still blaming Bush six years on:
Five years into Obama's presidency, only a third of the public believes that Obama and the Democrats are primarily responsible for the country's current economic problems.
More Americans continue to blame former President Bush and the Republicans. But the number who say the GOP is more responsible - now at 44% - has dipped below the 50% mark for the first time since Bush left the White House. Fourteen percent blame both parties equally.
Depressing evidence that ceaseless propaganda from the media does in fact work.
DNC Literally Indebted to Unions
To the tune of $15 million owed to SIEU via Workers United which is more cash than the DNC has on hand.
From the Folks Who Brought You Deranged Vietnam Vet Syndrome...
As he wrote in the 1998 book Stolen Valor, (excerpted here) in the 1980s and '90s, former Vietnam war vet B.G. Burkett spent years and a fair amount of resources fighting the myth of the crazed Vietnam vet. In the 1970s, and early '80s, that character was a stock figure promulgated by Hollywood in films ranging from Taxi Driver to the Deer Hunter to the first Rambo movie, and as the baddie-of-the-week in numerous TV crime dramas. It wasn't until the mid-1980s that finally, TV series such as Magnum P.I., the A-Team, and Miami Vice finally made Vietnam vets the good guys. (As Ben Shapiro writes in Primetime Propaganda, Magnum's producer Donald P. Bellisario, a former Marine Sergeant, treated Thomas and T.C. and Rick as the equivalent of World War II vets who had simply done their tour of duty, and were now using their skills to solve crimes in Hawaii.)
Comes a new target - the deranged 9/11 survivor.
On the Trail of Florida's Skunk Ape
So Florida has its own version of sasquatch known as the 'skunk ape'.
The first time Dave Shealy saw a skunk ape, he says, he was ten years old. It was 1974, a few years after his father had come upon a set of footprints left by the creature-an Everglades version of Bigfoot named for its supposedly pungent odor. Dave was out deer hunting with his older brother, Jack, in the swamp behind his house, in what's now Big Cypress National Preserve, when he encountered the ape incarnate.
"It was walking across the swamp, and my brother spotted it first. But I couldn't see it over the grass-I wasn't tall enough," Shealy says. "My brother picked me up, and I saw it, about 100 yards away. We were just kids, but we'd heard about it, and knew for sure what we were looking at. It looked like a man, but completely covered with hair."
I just assumed this would be another mythical creature hunt but after reading the entire article I'm now fairly convinced that the 'skunk ape' is a real ape but probably not what Dave Shealy thinks it is.
For Sale on eBay: Soviet Nuclear Bomber (Low Mileage!)
Special deal for you meester but you must buy quick before Putin come.
Sean Gallagher of Ars Technica says that the plane is a Tu-95MS built in 1987. It's a variant designed to fire cruise missiles. It was owned by the Ukrainian Air Force and comes with only 454 flight hours on the odometer.
The bomber is a fixer-upper. The seller says that "It is necessary to make a technical service and prolongation of the data limit." But that's nothing that a good shade tree mechanic can't tackle.
This is one of the more mainstream hipsters - probably just a poseur. But definitely not part of the 83.2%.
The AoSHQ group. Yeah.

This may actually be true. President Choom couldn't have done as much damage as he has done if Bush hadn't started us down the current path. That's why I think the next politician who uses the term "compassionate conservatism" should be tarred and feathered.

The republican party will regret winning the Florida election, and this win disproves the theory that it's all about ObamaCare. It was all about the illogical republican candidate who stands for lower taxes, the elimination of food stamps, denying women a living wage, and the refusal to make temporary American workers legal residents so they can qualify for government programs like food stamps, Section 8 housing, college loans, and other programs that create loyal democrat voters.

Very, very awesome about your babygirl!!! My daddy is a microbiologist (or was, he's mostly just old now), PhD and everything. Lord knows why people think, yeah, I'll do this, but who am I to question?
I'm so sorry you are still dealing with surgeries. But, we do what we must do, and we do it well, right? Always here for you. I've been remiss with the prayer list lately, but you are back on it.

18 The anti war movement in the 60's died when Nixon ended the draft and started the lottery for service. The anti war yuppies cared nothing about Vietnam, only their chicken shit asses. I was there. I watched it disappear in six months. Posted by: Nip Sip at March 11, 2014 10:21 PM (0FSuD)
Yep. Which is why when you see any movie or documentary from the '60's that features some hippie going on about the poor little North Vietnamese - what a total phony crock of shit. A few years down the road, when the Khmer Rouge was slaughtering millions in Cambodia, none of the "idealistic" hippies gave a rat's ass.

Insane - protesting a $100 million gift to a hospital. The left calls the 1% greedy and selfish, but then scream when they actually give their money to a cause everybody agrees is good.
Maybe the Kochs should say, Ok, we won't give any money to blue-staters any more. We'll only donate to hospitals in Texas. Then the left would scream about that. Because it's all they know how to do.

I would less surprised by a 70' megladon than a breeding population of skunk apes.
OTOH, after Andrew, who knows what escaped into the Everglades? We have pythons and monitor lizards in the last decades.
Posted by: Beagle at March 11, 2014 10:33 PM (sOtz/)
How does that go, now? Absence of proof is not proof of absence? Good fossils of land vertebrates are very scarce. You pretty much need to have very special conditions at the site of an animal's death for there to be any chance of it being preserved as a fossil. Normal course of events is that scavengers gobble up and scatter the remains.
Having said that, and having grown up in sasquatch country in B.C., I really doubt the critter exists. Somebody, somewhere, at some time, toting a gun, would have brought home a trophy to end all trophies.

Having said that, and having grown up in sasquatch country in B.C., I really doubt the critter exists. Somebody, somewhere, at some time, toting a gun, would have brought home a trophy to end all trophies.

The anti war movement in the 60's died when Nixon ended the draft and started the lottery for service.
The anti war yuppies cared nothing about Vietnam, only their chicken shit asses.

Too true. One (asshole) BILwas truthful and told the story about how he checked the lottery numbers. Found out he was in the 300's and went out to get drunk and celebrate. Freely said that if he had a low number, he was going to run for Canada.
Another was in the Nat'l Guard. Said he was willing to go, but he felt being in the Guard, just like ALL his brothers had done and did after the war, was enough. Alsos said the Guard was the biggest bunch of screw-ups he ever met. Two week Summer Training was spent in the baracks, waiting for an artillery call. Fired the gun once or twice, went back to the barracks and read stroke mags.
The third was young enough that he and his younger brothers missed the war. He volunteered and spent his time on the East German border listening to the East Germans. His younger brother listened to the Russians a few years later from the same kaserne.
Sometimes, I feel I should have volunteered. But the peanut was in charge, and frankly, he scared me. Just like Barack does today. I felt I would have been a pawn, and Jimmy would have left us to die in some hell hole if it would help his polls. After he sent "unarmed" F-15's to protect Saudi Arabia, I realized I was right.
Thank God we survived Jimmy Carter. I pray we survive BHO. But I feel that nukes will fly somewhere before 1/21/2017.

And the movement really started when the draft started coming after people who had previously had secure college deferments. That's why the movement centered on the campuses.
Talking to old hands around the SF Bay Area, who were there for the whole thing, they point out to me that 1967 was the gentle hippie "Summer of Love", when everything was calm and groovy even though the war was steadily ramping up.
Then suddenly 1968 was ugly riots and confrontation mass violence everywhere. What happened?
Tightened up draft deferments for the college kids is what happened. Simple as that. When they weren't the ones being sent to fight, they didn't care much about Vietnam. They were too busy happily smoking weed and getting laid.

I guess our local markets a different. I've seen used Gibson Studios for $500 or so. Those high end Epiphones go for a lot more than I'm willing to spend on an Epiphone, and I am the proud owner of an Epiphone G-400 which I got used and is the guitar I play the most often.
If we're talking north of $300 for guitar, I think it's better to spring for a used Gibson.

I bought hubby an E-3?? or 6 ?? Epiphone he found on the local Holloman Yard Sale thing.
His biggest want for a guitar would be a Les Paul anything! or a Telecaster. That's the kind of music he LOVES!
but it was a hard day's work, as when I was listening to the guy I bought it from play it so I could hear it, hubby called, and bless him the seller told hubby it had been sold.
Hard to hide the guitar IN a case for Christmas surprise! Had to bring it to Dad's house in very large trash bag and stuff it under niece's bed for the interim.
Oh but the look on his face was well worth all the subterfuge. He was so darned happy!

Totally fucking THIS.
Here is my concern, and what you are paying actually matters. The normal black epiphone LP custom goes for around $550. Yeah, they got the bling of the gibson LP, but there is not 1 single part shared between them, and its made in china...yeah, fucking china. If you are anything near the $500 mark you would be way WAY better off going for an actual gibson LP that they sell in the $6-700 range, even if you have to save for a little while longer. Yeah, they have a basic finish, and no real bling, but its 10X the guitar. The materials quality isn't even in the same universe. Gibson makes ONE set of hardware, and everything gets it, so the same stuff on a $600 gibson is the same stuff on a $3K Gibson, and that goes with the electronics too. I was at Guitar Center today and saw a frigging real Gibson SG for $499 and the LP for I think $6-700, and was an all mahogany with a carved top. Even without those, the faded series LP's they made a little bit ago are pretty damn cheap used.
The basic point is a real gibson can be had not far out of the ballpark if you take the time to look around. I have 2 epiphone LPs here that I got super cheap because I basically paid what the frigging duncan pickups the last dude put in them were worth, so as far as I was concerned I was buying pickups that just happened to come in a guitar shaped box. They are not bad, they actually play good, but they are not like my gibsons, they just don't have the sound. The epi body is multi pieces of wood glued together and veneered on the top and back to hide it all, and the neck is scarf jointed. In the end you have to do what makes you feel good, but at the price point of the epi you can get way close to a real gibson. Its really the battle between function over bling, or bling over function.

Please do! I am interested, especially if you come across a real steal on one that may have some cosmetic issues. I don't mind that kind of thing too much, and there's just no way I'm going to keep a guitar in showroom mint condition.
@ 574 [zombie] -- Gotcha! That makes perfect sense.
The only fire picture I've ever taken was one of my own car as it burned at a local Tea Party rally back in 2010. Seems a high-pressure power steering hose had sprayed fluid all over the engine compartment and it caught fire. It was kind of comical in hindsight. I was standing there taking photos of the rally when a voice came over the intercom to announce that there was a car on fire just across the street -- and the car description matched mine perfectly.
So, I hustled out to the street to see flames erupting from under the hood. Knowing there was nothing I could do at that point, I stopped in the middle of the street to photograph it.
Fortunately, though, there was a firetruck on hand at the rally, so it didn't burn completely to the ground. And I only had to have it towed a couple of miles to the salvage yard.
Also, I hated that car. So, all in all, it wasn't so bad. It could've been worse, anyway.

I should point out that mine are "classic" (+/- from 1979).
They are beautifully constructed, comfortable, great-sounding guitars (and basses) capable of a great deal of on-board sonic modification. On the flip side, my Musician strat weighs a freakin' ton, and I much prefer playing my Steinberger.
