Because nothing happens on a Tuesday night.

WTF is Wrong With Jeopardy Champion Ken Jennings?

Was he always an asshole or did someone slip him a case of douchebag pills over the weekend? (thanks to Ben K)

Department of Education Throws Up A Roadblock to Online Education

Because restricting and controlling education is their real purpose.

The Department of Education is revisiting a fight it lost in 2012: to make states authorize every distance education provider that enrolls students within their borders. Ever since a federal judge struck down this requirement on procedural grounds, states have been able to exempt online programs from the authorization process as long as it's accredited somewhere else.

Otherwise someone might lose their phony-baloney job. Because educators are all about the kids. (thanks to Slu)

Cracked: 6 Unexpected Things I Learned Resisting the Nazis in WWII

#4. Nobody Is Who You Expect

Going to school, this girl, Tanya, was there. Her dad was a mayor of a big town, so she was wealthy. We always wondered, though: Why would she come from 100 miles away just for school? She was even friends with this girl who was the girlfriend to a member of the Hlinka Guard. She, despite being rich, would go to the poor areas at night. We always wondered why she went there. It wasn't until after the war we found out why.

One of these three school girls would go on to fight the Nazis and save Jews while another would become a Nazi collaborator. Can you tell just from the picture?

Karma is a Lovely Bitch Sometimes

But that wasn't enough punishment for the road rage thug who made headlines around the world last week for falling victim to a beautiful act of karma. Karma struck twice.

At the weekend he was arrested by authorities, Florida television news network WTSP reports. Not only for reckless driving, but for leaving the scene and failing to wear a seatbelt.

You could even say karma struck a third time, because police publicly identified him as Jeffrey White, age 33.

15 Antiquated Words for "Happy" We Should Bring Back

"CHIRKY"
From the late 19th century, meaning "cheerful."

"IN HIGH SNUFF"
An expression for "good mood," used from the late 17th century until the 1930s.

"KVELLING"
From the Yiddish for "so happy and proud my heart is overflowing."

"CHUFFED"
This current slang in the UK certainly needs to make a trip across the pond.

51 After days of not being on computer (due to total procrastination and major house cleaning/ sewing prep for mother who arrived today)... I read that "supposedly" seven million have signed onto Obowowcare, disregarding the bazillion who lost their healthcare dut to his signature legislation. By the time the math is figured out it will be after the election!

Earthquake, Chili, big one over 8. Tsunami. For some reason people evacuating to a stadium but are on the ground? Hello? Go to top row? Or not. Wouldn't a powerful tsunami just, uh, wipe out the bleachers and give  you a better view as you cling to the metal? Keep in mind I have no idea what I would do other than inflate my raft, and I live pretty dang close to the ocean. Guess my bug-out kit needs raft and/or rocket.

Bison evacuating Yellowstone ahead of giant volcano triggered by earthquakes and Obamacare. Apparently God is tired of the lies from the WH, too.

The most pressing question of all is where are the bison going? Some say the video is fake. Is it a bison-drive? They seem to know to stay in their lane.

At any rate, if you don't look at the computer for two days the world is apparently ending. xoxo

70 Posted this yesterday, but Ace brought up the same topic earlier today, so to add to that: "The REAL Bigots Regarding Same Sex Marriage" … Does believing that marriage is an institution that is defined by a union of a man and a woman mean that a person should be prohibited from working? According to some, it does. Heck, some people who declare that “[w]hen you support people who are ‘against’ another person or group because they are ‘not like you’, that is bigotry”, and then go on to demand that those who are “against” gay marriage are a group that must be punished or ostricized because they are “not like you,” under the defense that they are not “bigots.” This makes it clear that the real “bigots” are the Leftists who would discriminateagainst those who do not celebrate every and all politically correct policy point. http://tinyurl.com/mhb9aup

"The move is a milestone for the exchange, once considered a national example and the pride of Gov. Martin OÂ’MalleyÂ’s administration. Eager to be pioneers of President Barack ObamaÂ’s landmark health reform law, Maryland began planning for the exchange early. But the system crashed on its first day and has been dogged by ongoing technical glitches and leadership problems. The state has spent a total of $125 million on the exchange, which includes salaries and other administrative costs. Just under $68 million of that went to Noridian Healthcare Solutions, the lead website contractor that the state fired in February." http://bit.ly/1pLoLKe We didn't get here until after the 10/1 crash & burn and the 11/1 missed deadline at least, whew.

224 Sources tell The ENQUIRER that Obama exploded when Michelle refused to cancel her pricey getaway – even after White House advisers warned him that the first couple’s six-year string of extravagant vacations had already drained the U.S. Treasury of a whopping $150 million in taxpayers’ money. Instead of postponing her trip, a furious Michelle – still seething over the embarrassing “selfie” Barack recently snapped with a leggy blonde head of state – announced that she was taking her mother along for company. She further declared that she didn’t want reporters covering her activities overseas. “This was a blowout of epic proportions – probably the nastiest White House fight they’ve ever had,” a Washington, D.C., insider told The ENQUIRER. “They were both screaming at one another. “The president was infuriated when advisers told him that they’d added up the costs of all their ‘vacations’ and China was putting them over the $150 million mark. Besides being humiliated by the president’s “selfie” photo with the sexy Danish prime minister at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service last December, sources say Michelle was further outraged when she learned the Secret Service had been covering up the president’s cheating. The first lady has already met with divorce lawyers and is planning a separate life after her husband leaves the White House. “Obama’s advisers told him he must try and keep Michelle ‘under control’ until then,” divulged the D.C. insider. from that source of fearless journalism, the National Enquirer not sure if I am joking maybe that's why the SS keeps getting fired

250 And it's not necessarily unusual to have gasoline lines in a country that exports crude oil. All you need is a really sucky government.

To get the petrol to the car, requires a refinery in between. Refineries require skilled personnel to run the machines. Skilled personnel can be found in Africa, but they are not the majority. Democracy empowers the majority. When the majority is like the majority in most nations south of the Sahara (hell, south of the Alps) .  . .

There are only two possible non-sucky political systems in Africa. One is dictatorship, and to hope that the dictator is competent. The other is to import lots of Dutch and Brits, and to hope they can think up a nice-sounding euphemism - since apparently the euphemism the Dutch came up with didn't sound nice enough.

273 109 Is Brannon the guy who got all the press for screwing over some people in a business deal? Posted by: Ashley Judd's -------------------- Ah. You have been listening to the 'press' again, eh? You know better. The straight scoop..., but you will have to read it: http://tinyurl.com/nv3fmff Posted by: Mike Hammer at April 01, 2014 10:40 PM (aDwsi) I know that most of the lawsuit is bullshit, but the point I am trying to make is "perception is reality". Most people have no idea what went on in that deal, all they know is that he got sued, and if you get sued, you HAD to have done something awful. I have been told here that you can't be sued for things because the law says so. My answer to that is that judges will decide if you can be sued or not, and they will decide if that law applies, no one else. Brannon is now perceived as a sleazy business man because of the suit, and that has nothing to do with the facts.

RWC, great point on the North Korean-style "press" behavior.  Even avoiding most of the daily trivia in the "news", I was easily aware of the repeated instances on the Hill where admin. witnesses said they had no numbers (yes, this ITSELF was another outrage which, if it had occurred in the Bush years .... well just imagine a Bush admin. official not having exact numbers on some "controversial", i.e. media-slandered, program ... yeah, I know, what's the point).

Then, suddenly ..... magic!  Exact numbers!  And not a one of those loathsome stupid "journalists" has the brains or integrity to ask the first question that popped into any moderately informed person's head.

The degradation of this country, of its civic culture and institutions, makes it unrecognizable to me.  This Rose Garden outrage is the n-th example in just the last few years.    And it's not by this ridiculous affirmative action non-entity "president" - he's just a pathetic symptom.  The degradation is all around us, in the humans who are fellow "citizens" in no meaningful sense.

HavenÂ’t you seen the outpouring of love from the people in Boston to the Fire House that the two firefighters were killed from in last WednesdayÂ’s nine alarm fire? I drive by that Fire House every day on my way to & from work. On the way to it I am on the opposite side of the street & taking a right at the intersection. On my way home I face it to take a left onto Boylston Street. They are still putting fresh flowers & people are standing around the Fire House tonight six days later. The flag is still at half mast but they took off the black flag they had on the fire house itself. It was late so I canÂ’t see what it says.

Those Russian rations don't seem half-bad.  Remember that Russian soldiers have rarely been in an expeditionary status - they tend to fight at or close to home (uh, on the whole, better to be fighting in some place you can't find on the map, or pronounce, then close to home).  I mean in all of their history.  So field kitchens and being supported by your local populace, or train cars pulling up on a siding with supplies, have been more the norm.

Was it here a while back that Maet posted that link to the page with the MRE-equivalents from all those NATO countries?  Very interesting.

468 Just where did the idea that the rats then fleas spread the black death come from. Could it be way back when it was happening they saw rats with the dead and thought they caused and stayed for the last 600+. No one bothered to study the relationship after they pinned it on the fleas that it was really human to human all along.

I hate that Windows 8 POS & am sending it to my brother, Paul. HeÂ’s got nothing but time on his hands & I cannot work from home with it anymore. I ordered a Windows 7 Latitude Last week. It came today & I had no intention of setting it up today. I just turned it on, put the network password in & it found the wireless printer. Two weeks ago I replaced a six year old Linksys Router with an Apple Router. Because the Apple Air Port is the network router it was easy. I just named the computer. I only have to copy my favorites from the old Windows 7 computer if it will work or from the W8 computer. I could also install the Apple iCloud control panel on it and have it import my bookmarks from this Mac laptop.

Maet, don't think I've added my voice to the chorus on this before, but thanks for the outstanding ONTs.  As my hopes for the country have dwindled, my formerly ravenous and wide-ranging (and multi-lingual) web reading has narrowed - but I have to think that the ONTs here are actually one of the most interesting, intelligent, entertaining features of any website going today.

Is that you, Maet - Maetenloch13?  Assuming it it, OK, vodka.

Somewhere I have a photo of myself, sitting on the curb (lots of hair back then), smiling weakly up at the camera, and the palor of my face about matches the cement.  Why?  Morning after the Kiev-Moscow train trip.  Last train trip of our summer in the USSR.  So the drinking was .... epic.  (still tame, by Russian standards .... my god the alcohol consumption of even "average" Soviets we knew).  As I recall it all started with a vodka-spiked "dinniy" (spherical watermelon), followed by an entire bottle of Soviet champagne (not bad, to a 19-yr old's tastes anyway ....), followed by .... probably 2/3 of a bottle of the cheaper Soviet vodka (Stolichnaya existed, but was only found in hard-currency shops).  Maybe other stuff.  One forgets after the vodka/champagne/vodka warm-up.

Anyway, ended up broadcasting all of that out to the Ukrainian/Russian country-side speeding by in the picturesque moonlight (dunno about now, but back then Russian rails were not welded, so you got that old-fashioned "clackety-clack" sound the whole time, kind of cool with the endless birch forests and lakes streaming by in the moonlight).

536 IÂ’m going to neck pain doctor on Thursday. I need two sets of pain injections. My shoulder & arm hurt & there is nothing wrong with it, or there wasnÂ’t three years ago. ItÂ’s coming from my neck, itÂ’s referred pain. I had two injections in my neck in 2011 for it & they lasted almost three years. Nothing I take is working on that.

My neck needs a set of injections too. If pain doctor still has an opening Friday he can inject me on Friday. I bought Windows 7 computer so I can work from here if I have to.

Damn, you're giving me flashbacks. That shoulder and arm thing is the frigging pits. When my neck blew out the first time it took about a month for that stuff to kick in. Seemed like every frigging nerve in the neck took its turn. One day my jaw would pop, next day shoulder would pop, then there was the pain that went over the top of the shoulder, then the other pain that ended at the elbow. They all took turns, they had a frigging meeting to decide which one would screw with me on what day. One day I couldn't move my wrist one way, and the following day I couldn't  move it the other day, then my arm froze in the Napoleon position for a few days and it felt like I would rip all the tendons trying to straighten it out. That suuucked. I feel for you, I wouldn't wish that shit on my worst enemy. Well, maybe a few assholes in congress.

Krebs vs. Carnot - OK, I'm sort of pretending I haven't really already essentially given up on things here, but what you point out is key.

If this country cannot/does not react (strongly, with result) when a RIDICULOUS federal atrocity literally disrupts their family finances and medical choices - when there previous insurance situation was viewed as satisfactory by a HUGE majority of the populace, with concerns about cost of course - then we will know that "it's dead, Jim."

Of course the lawless chaos employed to delay the impact of this idiocy, for now, has worked.  But my understanding of the insurance industry is that the premium calculations/negotiations for large group plans for 2015 is well under way, and will actually start to become real and specific starting soon and continue until the fall.  With no press any more, who knows, but if 2014 is not an election about something, but just another cycle - well then the most outlandish-sounding, alienated perspective on America as a civil society will be vindicated.

Hmm, usually take my coffee ruined (cream and sugar).

So there I was in Dalat, one of Vietnam's coffee towns (90s - V'mese girlfriend, not 60s - V'mese war).  Just arrived.  A V'mese coffee fanatic, but the common way (with sweetened condensed milk, over ice).

I see the locals (all old guys) sitting around the outdoor cafe, smoking, all drinking "ca phe den" (black).  So I decide to finally try it that way.

Shaking.  Slightly queasy stomach (and my gut is not just iron, but some kind of exotic titanium alloy that almost never gets queasy).  Girlfriend is laughing.  So I went back to ca phe sua da (iced, with s/c-milk).

There were other queasy, shaking moments in Saigon.  When the gf was at work, and I was at a cafe.  And the waitresses.  And the fauna dropping in for coffee.  My god.  Menu, no ordering, most men know the drill.  Any way.  My god.  Wonder what Saigon/TPHCM is like today.  Methinks I'd still be running into light poles while, uh, "distracted" by passing scenery.

605 Good morning, Horde. Busy past few days. Dave and I are flying to Cancun in a bit and we're up and about before the chickens. Coffeeeeeeee!

606 I hate the left lane slow pokes as much as anyone but that only stands on a freeway, it's not in effect in every 2 lane road in America.

607 G'morning, Gingy. Cancun? Hell yes! I was going to ask if anyone was awake to talk me out of doing a shot of Jaeger, but you certainly ain't the one.

608 This is the first year I didn't get any Girl Scout cookies. Their drift leftward played a role but the more likely reason is that I'm out of work and buckling down financially. I'm not the only one.

Jaeger?

*shudder*

I had a baad experience with Jaeger, the day after the wall came down in Berlin. Don't drink that, it will make you walk into poles and fall down the stairs, and then afterwards puke yellow. You'll think you were the subject of an Exorcist movie, except I think the demon would be kinder.

611 That woman driving is an ass. She was sitting in the left lane and providing no means for a faster vehicle to pass her. She endangered traffic safety, and then laughed when her actions resulted in an accident.

612 Chi, you're a grown man and as such you may do all the Jaeger shots you want to. I just don't know why you'd want to.

613 Morning yall. I was standing at the gun display pictured above when a bunch of Germans walked up and were all blah, blah, blah Cowboys and Indians while pointing to the smith n wessons. I laughed loudly. The other thing of notemwere some MGs made in europe but specifically state modeled after Browning. It warmed my heart that some great Americans contributed to this fight, the Warsaw Uprising.

The Nagant pistol killed plenty of commies...

of course it was commies pulling the trigger...

You can't build a worker's paradise without blood for the mortar comrade.
