Another Random Act of Bill Murray-ness

In recent years a whole genre of stories of Bill Murray's random acts of friendliness has sprung up on the internet. Apparently Bill just enjoys making people's days and giving them a thrill as well as a good story to tell others. Assuming anyone will ever believe it.

Some of these stories go back to the 70s and 80s so this seems to be part of his nature rather than anything new. Because you never know when Bill might show up and join your kickball game, serve drinks at a random bar, do your dishes after a party, or sing karaoke with you for four hours.

And this weekend he helped give a wounded Marine a night he won't forget:

Over the weekend, we traveled to St. Augustine, Florida, for Bill's annual Murray Bros. Caddyshack Charity Golf Tournament when I noticed a Random Act of Murray happen right in front of me.

Earlier in the evening, Bill and his brothers had honored Brandon Long, a wounded veteran from our home town of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The Marine lost both his legs above the knee in an IED accident in Afghanistan. I met Brandon and he was beyond nice. The young hero is always smiling. The Murray event is so whimsical your cheeks hurt from the laughter.

Later in the evening, the tables cleared as the band started. The crowd hit the dance floor. I saw Brandon sitting by himself at a table watching everybody dance when, out of nowhere, appears Bill Murray. "Looks like you could use some company?" And just like that, Bill disappeared again. A minute later Bill returns with a beautiful girl and introduced her to Brandon. But Bill didn't stop there, "I'll be right back."

Once again Bill vanished into the crowd and returned with another gorgeous woman. and another. and another. and another.. until Brandon was surrounded by beautiful girls. Bill took photos with everybody and cracked jokes, everybody enjoyed the moment.

Oh and here are some more interesting facts about Bill Murray.

He never had an agent or manager, and he still doesn't today. You track down Bill on the phone, or his friend's answering machine, and forge a type of 'gentleman's agreement'. Then you cross your fingers that he shows up. In the case of Meatballs, nobody knew if he'd show up or not. Bill arrived on the first day of filming with an entire wardrobe of Hawaiian shirts (all of which he owned). These shirts would become his wardrobe for the entire movie.
Bill Murray paid for the helicopter scene in Rushmore. How the helicopter scene in Max's Vietnam War-themed play cost $25,000, I have no idea, but it did and Disney didn't want to front the cost for it. Bill knew it was important to the script. Being the awesome human being that he is, Murray wrote Anderson a check to cover the costs. This story gets even more awesome when you find out Bill Murray was only paid $9,000 for doing the entire film. Bill basically paid $16,000 to be in the film.

So When Were US Military Bases Disarmed?

According to Snopes it was a Department of Defense directive in February 1992 that limited who could carry firearms on a military base. Most likely this was due to the spate of post office and workplace shootings around this time.

A change in U.S. Army regulations issued in March 1993 (just two months after President Clinton assumed office) did affect the issue of personnel carrying firearms on military bases, but that change in regulations was issued by the Department of the Army and was not implemented by President Clinton via an executive order. Moreover, that change in regulations came about in response to a U.S. Department of Defense directive issued in February 1992, during the presidency of George H.W. Bush, and not at the sole behest of President Clinton.

Additionally, that change in regulations (which applied only to the Army, not other branches of the U.S. armed forces) did not ban the carrying of weapons by soldiers on Army bases; it restricted the authorization to carry firearms to personnel engaged in law enforcement and security duties, and to personnel stationed at facilities where there was "a reasonable expectation that life or Army assets would be jeopardized if firearms were not carried"

Over 600 People Walk by Two Lost Girls: Can You Blame Them?

Well given that the article did not include the video of people actually walking by I'm not going to criticize the passer-bys too much since body language and the overall situation can make a big difference in whether someone sees it as a serious situation or not. And I'm willing to cut the guys slack given how insanely paranoid Britain has become about pedophiles. When your entire life could be permanently ruined by approaching an unrelated child, it's asking a bit much for men to jump in when there's no clear immanent risk to life. But the women and couples didn't have this excuse.

The Three Religions of the West: Judaism, Christianity, and Environmentalism

Though radical environmentalism is still a young religion - a successor to the fascism of the first half of the 20th century and the romanticism of the 19th century, it bears another trait with other religions in their early days: a desire to shout death and imprisonment to the non-believers, Jonah Goldberg adds today in USA Today.

Will State ObamaCare Programs Be Just an Extension of the Democratic Party?

Of course they will.

A local couple called 10News concerned after they received an envelope from the state's Obamacare website, Covered California. Inside was a letter discussing voter registration and a registration card pre-marked with an "x" in the box next to Democratic Party.

The couple - who did not want their identity revealed - received the letter and voter registration card from their health insurance provider Covered California, the state-run agency that implements President Obama's Affordable Care Act.

They have lived in La Mesa for years and they have always been registered to vote Republican. Now, they are perplexed as to how the voter registration card pre-marked Democrat ended up in their mailbox.

RPG Grows Up: Meet the Vampir

When the RPG-29 round hits, its first warhead of the tandem pair initiates on the rear of the engine deck, and the main shaped charge fires seemingly instantaneously. The Vampir's warhead has over double the penetration of the common PG-7V round for the RPG-7. The crew? They stand no chance as the round ignites the tank's ready ammunition. The temperature and pressure inside the fighting compartment (and the driver's compartment, which is not isolated from it) are instantly more like the inside of a gun barrel than a shirtsleeve environment.

The exception is one of the turret crew, identified as the gunner by Russian analysis (a meatball machine translation of one of those analyses is here). He either bailed out or, more likely, was ejected through the above-mentioned unsecured hatch; you see him pull himself together and run off to the building on the right, the tatters of his clothes trailing behind his burnt body. And he's the lucky one.

17 Is Democrat Iowa Senate Candidate Braley this Year’s “Todd Akin”? In 2012, an unnecessary and idiotic remark destroyed Todd Akin and allowed an unpopular incumbent Senator to loose, and likely also contributed to the loss of the Indiana Senate seat. The Democrats hounded the Republicans as being anti-woman and pro-rape. It turns out that the 2014 version of Todd Akin may end up being Democrat candidate for the open Iowa Senate seat, current Congressman Bruce Braley. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=5450

92 I was at Ft. Bragg from late '84 through early '86. I don't know if it was Army policy, Ft, Bragg policy, or 82nd Airborne Division policy, but any soldier living in the barracks who owned a personal firearm was required to sign it over to the company armory and sign it out when he wanted to use it. Unless there was a company related need for the armorer to be there nights or weekends, the armory was only open weekdays. This effectively meant that no soldiers living in the barracks were allowed to carry personal weapons even in their off duty time. It's worth mentioning that this was a catch me, f*** me rule that was widely ignored by soldiers living in the barracks. NCOs knew that some of their soldiers had handguns stashed under wall lockers and as long as none of them caused a problem nobody cared.

The impression I got was that this was the way things had been done for as long as anybody I served with could remember. It may not have been Pentagon policy, but disarming soldiers on at least some military posts predates that Army policy change that Snopes mentions by at least a decade.

At the time Ft. Bragg, along with a lot of other large military installations, was wide open - no fences, no gates, anybody could drive right on post. I don't know what the official policy was, but it would have been a fools errand to try to enforce a rule against possession of personal weapons by anyone on post who didn't live in the barracks.

That depends on where you were at, 3d ACR got mortars and casualties that year in Iraq. I came to the unit while they were there and heard the stories when they got back. I also witnessed a lot of Post Traumatic Stress (not necessarily the disorder) from the mortar alarms going off a couple of nights per week much of that year.

Heh.

Joey Bishop told a anecdotal joke once on the Tonight Show about Cary Grant that was similar.

He's in a casino standing near the mens room when Cary Grant walks out. With wet trousers and shoes. Joey stops CG and asks how such an elegant gentleman could piddle all over himself. CG says that he was standing at the urinal next to a tourist and they're both doing their business. Then the tourist turns to the left (Joey pantomines the action), and asks "aren't you Cary Grant?"

218 Doesn't anyone but me think that the double voting story in the sidebar is a Big Fcuking Deal?

765 voters with an exact match of first and last name, DOB and last four digits of SSN were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in N.C. and the other state in the 2012 general election.

35,750 voters with the same first and last name and DOB were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in both states in the 2012 general election.

Widespread voter fraud in just one state, with it an incomplete look because a bunch of states don't have or give access to the data. This isn't like the previous stories, like 6 people charged with voter fraud in Ohio.

This could be the start of a real smoking gun version.

I do, GnuBreed.

"35,750 voters with the same first and last name and DOB[/I]"....were registered and voted, in two different states THAT WE KNOW OF.

That's 70, 000 fraudulent votes right there.

You can damn well bet that this was happening all over the country.

Numbers like that add up in a hurry...into the millions.

Older enlistee, probably didn't have much of a career before the Army.  88M promotion is hard with very high cutoff scores, especially with the draw down, so it's entirely possible that he simply didn't make the cut each time.  Or he could be a dirtbag who hadn't faced the chopping block yet.

301 765 voters with an exact match of first and last name, DOB and last four digits of SSN were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in N.C. and the other state in the 2012 general election. 35,750 voters with the same first and last name and DOB were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in both states in the 2012 general election. 322 The principal chief of the Cherokee Nation says the 175th anniversary of the end of the Trail of Tears is a cause for celebration. Several thousand Cherokee Indians died as they were forced from their homelands in the southeast into Indian Territory, beginning in 1838. Monday marks the anniversary of the arrival of the final group to present-day Oklahoma. Chief Bill John Baker says tribal members feel a sense of pride from the Trail of Tears. He says that, despite the trials and tribulations, Cherokee ancestors survived and the tribe has thrived. http://bartlesvilleradio.com/pages/news/68722014/trail-of-tears-anniversary Kinda like the Jews who ended up in America because of the Holocaust. If it hadn't been for the Trail of Tears, the modern Cherokees would've been stuck down South, instead of in glorious Oklahoma. Good and hardy people, the Cherokees. ((Is that rayciss? Oh my!!)) There's a double line of trees goes across our lands. My brother tells me that used to be one the Trail of Tears terminus.. terminuses.. termini... their road went through there.

The medical evaluation board process on the Army-side is broken.  It's taking years for some soldiers to get through, and those are the ones who want to get out.  If this guy wanted to fight the process or the determination, then yeah, he could drag it out two, three, or four years.

343 The principal chief of the Cherokee Nation says the 175th anniversary of the end of the Trail of Tears is a cause for celebration. Kaine when he was Governor went after a few local registrars because they wanted to make sure that those voters who signed up were removed from their home states' rolls. Acorn also hired a bunch of kids to register people, then bailed on paying the kids.

P. Hat, out of a field of 35,000 with same first and last name and DOB as me, you should get about 4 (1:10,000) with the same last 4 SSN digits.

There were 765. This seems a bit higher than random chance right there, don't cha think? Though I think this matching problem is closer to the birthday paradox, where in a crowd of people the odds of someone having your birthday approaches 50% with just 23 people present.

When I was in Iraq (mostly Baghdad, IZ) the indirect fire (IDF) was very inaccurate and rarely effective.  But the audio characteristics of the compound and the fact that there was only reaction, never warning, led to some laughs.

Sharp crack, slight shock wave (as felt in a trailer surrounded by sandbags).  Mortar attack.  Maybe a second round hits (rarely).  Thirty seconds pass.  Sirens start wailing.  Then - best part - the public address system comes on (otherwise you never heard it), and the voice says "Attention in the compound, we are under attack ..... (then the words become garbled/inaudible due to bad echo, voice not carrying around all the trailers and sandbags etc) ..... immediately!"

Seriously.  It was like a movie.  You could hear laughter many times as people in their trailers reacted to the "(inaudible) immediately!" message.

We came to mock the system - "Attention in the compound, you have just been attacked.  If you didn't notice, wake up, or sober up, and if you're under General Order No. 1 you are in deep shit".

One the units I was in was like that...and it was a Det.  They were infamous for their Christmas party.  Every year they'd pull a Bradley onto the drill hall floor and open it up.  There were actually two parties: the daytime one where you brought the kids and Santa showed up and the kids could clamber around on the Brad.  Then there was the adults-only night party, during which late at night adult activities were known to have taken place in the Brad.

I came in the next day after one such Christmas party and noticed that the Brad wasn't in the same place it had been the night before.  Then I noticed that the TOW launcher was hanging off at a 45 degree angle.

Later, I found out that among other things, the Brad may or may not have been spotted by local LEOs tearing up and down Highway 25 at 0230 and following that in the woods behind the armory.

OK, now going to actually call it a night.

Fundamental problem with trying to clear up the dirty (and exploited) voter rolls is that the federal courts keep rudely slapping down such efforts. Voting Rights Act and all that.

Gosh, is that ancient thing still around? When does it finally expire?

It DID expire. During George W. Bush's presidency. He reauthorized it without so much as the smallest peep of protest.

459 You know, we lost our insurance (working for the state ), that we'd had for twenty-plus years, thanks to Obamacare's requirements, and now have worse insurance that costs more. Then I hear from people I know on forums how they got obamacare for less (and some with subsidies). And you know what? I hate those people. I'm supposed to be happy that they get free stuff when it costs ME? I mean, why don't they just come and take food out of my refrigerator and expect me to be happy about it. I don't WANT to hate those people, but that's what this fosters. They could have set up an insurance program for those people without taking insurance away from those who already had it, and making them take something that costs more and provide less, and I wouldn't be nearly as mad about it. (Not to mention they had the audacity of telling us we were too stupid to realize that what we had was "bad" insurance.) My only consolation is I figure we at least have better networks than those on obamacare.

482 PS there are vote fraud prosecutions all the time. Several went to jail after 2012 and the state charged that lady who voted five times, that case was in the news about a week ago. The problem is we get these little drips and drabs, so the MFM reports 2-3 at a time and says "it's real but it's rare," note they always report a different 2-3. They add up. NC will be explained away because it's a probabalistic analysis, even though an actual count is involved. The actual totals are probably a few hundred thousand in major election years - it's pretty heavily institutionalized in some places. The left loves to explain away things like Franken's box of ballots in a trunk (it was worse in Allen West's last election) by saying the existence of that box is not proof of nefarious intent (as if there was another answer) - but it is proof the election was compromised. But people tolerate a lot of shit - which guarantees they get even more shit next time.

496 Can Jackson really be classified as punk? Serious question. I used too to say that, but, not some sure these days. On a side note, i think I listened to"one more time" too many times today

497 Can Jackson really be classified as punk? I would classify 'Look Sharp' as a post punk album if I had to categorize the entire thing. I've always considered 'Got the Time' a Punk Tune. Probably because I saw a lot of Punk and Hardcore bands cover it over the years.

498 416 >> The problem is we get these little drips and drabs, so the MFM reports 2-3 at a time and says "it's real but it's rare," note they always report a different 2-3. They add up. NC will be explained away because it's a probabalistic analysis, even though an actual count is involved.

Mero gets it, as do many of you as well, but I'm thinking this report could pry the doors wide open. No longer a few underlings in ACORN or the IRS, but the Big Picture. The report is a cross reference across 28 states to just one state, NC.

Posted by: rich@gmu at April 03, 2014 01:47 AM (RhQvZ) Virginia colleges have always had a lot of out of state students enroll, and I think in the past couple of decades it's gotten even bigger. The schools want the out of state tuition dollars. At UVa, first year in state tuition is $10,000, out of state is $36,000. That extra $26,000 can hire a couple of extra administrators a year.

I think I stayed home & got high that night. Probably wasn't even good weed. Less than a year later, I discovered Stevie. Now, i'm the biggest fan. Interesting stuff, rich. Just the other day I was reflecting on the power of the State, even a small State. This is why we must pay heed to any gathering of just several million souls under one ideology -- They do have a true power. It cannot be ignored.

The world only pays heed to us because we are a large grouping, with enormous power.

597 Late night report from Cancun. It's late here, 2 AM, 4 where I'm from. In 5 hours I'm going to be heading to the Chichen Itza. Very excited. Chicken Itza is amazing. Tonight, however, I somehow ended up in a strip club. I am happy to report that Mexican women have boobs, just like our American ones. They're cute too, but none of them is a patch on my Gingy. Oh well, another trope falls. We look for exotic foreign women, but exotic foreign men view our gals the same way. I'll stick with my exotic, normal, boring, typical wife. What else could I want from life? Nothing I can think of.

The problem with that is that you can't really store something complex in a harsh environment for a long period of time - then have any expectation that it will work properly.  As a last option - sure - as a plan, not so good.

631 I was able to walk up the pyramids at Chichen Itza. The best vacay ever....at the last minute my boyfriend couldn't go to Cancun with me and I went anyway. I read and drank on the beach, went snorkeling and on day trips, and had dinner with different guys every night because the hostesses assumed I would appreciate that, or maybe they thought I was a hooker. 657 Some more insight on England. Panhandlers are rife there and use sneaky tactics. I found that out the hard way. Once I needed to know the time on High Street, Oxford and asked people but it took forever for anyone to tell me. A few weeks later, a man asked me the time; I stopped, looked at my watch and told him . . . and he asked for money. Then I understood. Also, the UK is infested with Roma now, and they are very well known for using their children to steal. This is not to excuse, but to help understand.
