Political/Open Thread
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

This thread is for anything and everything.

That being said, was wondering if anyone else wet shaved? I've always been a once a week shaver with a crap disposable and foam out of a can (and hated it) but this past Christmas, I was given a Edwin Jager DE89, a jar of Proraso White, 100 pack of Astra Blades and a cheap badger brush and bowl. Have to say that I'm quite liking the experience and has become a daily ritual for me so far. Plus saving some cash doesn't hurt either.

Just curious on if there were more on here doing it.

5 I always used to shave my legs for years with Saks Rose scented soap. They stopped making in years ago. I found Rose Scented Soap at Neiman Marcus online on sale a few years ago and bought several boxes. They donÂ’t make it now either. Now I use Yardley English Lavender soap, itÂ’s one dollar or a bit more at Stop & Shop. I am wet shaver.

6 And yes, I've become quite the convert to wet shaving.  My favorite blades are Derbys (made in Turkey) and I use a vintage Gillette Slim razor.  A blade costs about $.08 and lasts at least a week (this is with three passes:  with the grain, across the grain, and against the grain.  I'm sure I'd get even longer usage with just one pass, which is perfectly adequate for daily shaving).  I've tried various soaps and found a number of good ones, but there's one you can get at WalMart that is as good as any, costs about $2, and will last months.  You can get a MUCH better shave wet shaving than with any of the expensive 5-bladed junk they sell.

I recently bought a razor and blades from Harrys.com

You can get a starter kit with a handle, 3 cartidges and a tube of shaving cream for $15.00. If you order replacement cartridges 16 at a time they are about $1.50 ea with free shipping. They also will set you up with auto refills if you want.

I am pretty happy with them so far. Link in nic

8 I've had a beard - well, since 1981, my junior year in high school. It's better than shaving, you only have to hit cleanup on your neck to your chinline and you can use a dull, 5 month old razor for that. I buy one pack of 2 dollar disposables every other year like clockwork. And I use Irish Spring for lather. That, or sand.

11 I love football. I hate it when the season is over but this nonstop celebrity/musical celebrity/political tie in is enough to make puke. O'Reilly doing a puff interview with Obama before the game, why? Promoting movies on ESPN regular programming, why? The half time show is always crap. And punch yourself in the friggen face if you watch the Super Bowl, "because I just love the commercials." Really? Commercials? Dick.

35 I can guarantee any and all shavers the best shave of your life will come when you use Paul Mitchell The ONE conditioner as the lubricant.  I have been using it for 20 years, and never get razor burn.  Never.  My Mach 3 blades last around a month, with tri-weekly full shaving.

I apply a small amount on my face and neck in the shower after I have scrubbed my face, and shave at the sink once my shower is done.  Or, you can wash your face, apply the conditioner, and wait about 2 minutes before shaving.

I recommend you to try it, regardless of the razor you utilize.

But I think the 5-bladed razors are hilarious. I remember back in the 70s when twin-bladed razors were the new hotness, and SNL did a commercial parody featuring the "Triple Trac". A 3-bladed razor was so obviously absurd that the very idea was mocked.

68 IIANM you can no longer get a shave from any of the barbershops here.  I think they have been regulated out of existence due to aids and other blood born diseases.

First they made them go to disposable razors with rubber gloves.  That killed the customers desire for it and then they issued regulations for disposal of the razors similar to what hospitals have to do with sharps.

So it just became too expensive for something that was no longer popular.

Your State may vary.

Food production.

And yeah facial hair and face masks don't mix either.  I've gone through refinery training and even though you aren't wearing one while going around the plant they have pretty strict standards on the allowed facial hair because if there is an incident that requires you to put a face mask/breather on you can't have your facial hair get in the way of the seal.

Anyway, I shave maybe twice a week with disposables--each of which last me approximately a month as I dry them thoroughly post use.  In order to reduce razor-burn, I use Edge Ultra Sensitive gel and, for aftershave, I apply hydrocortisone cream. I've got wussy skin--especially on my neck. I'll even get razor-burn from electrics as I've got to make so many passes due to the wildly varied hair growth directions.

88 I used to shave with a straight razor- had two at 102 Hamilton st. When Mom sold the house in 1991 I went to get them? Two lines of rust and handles. Salt air...

There seems to be a trend to going back to double-edged safety razors- I got one each for the first and second floors. Via Amazon, natch. They do give a nice shave- but you have to be careful not to nick yourself.

Alum will teach you how much you suck as shaving

90 You can reduce your shaving drama with a stick of shaving soap (Arko, Palmolive)  -- you wet your face, rub it with stick of soap, the used your wet shaving brush to lather up your face, then shave.

But expensive and painful.  Mom had that done.

94 My favorite shave now uses a multiple blade razor with hot water (microwave hot) and a brush with soap in a bowl.

Once you start hot soap shaving you will never go back to canned cream crap.

The idea of having one of those "instant hot" faucets has a lot of appeal.

97 O'Reily is a douche but he's giving Obama more shit on the Libya issue than I've ever seen a journalist do before. Barry is getting testy.

98 I have had a Mac for two years now & I love it. I turned on old Dell Laptop at 11:30, that damn thing has been doing stupid stuff since then. Updating Norton Security Suite (free from Comcast) & some windows junk. I last used it in mid January. I get the emails everywhere and I deleted one I need, off ComcastÂ’s server, Mac & iPad. I thought it might be on Dell email too but I must have opened email once & deleted all to December 30. I think IÂ’m going to cancel it all & put it back under the couch.

The problem with normal hot water is that it doesn't get hot enough.  I heat a coffee cup full of water in the microwave for 2.5 min.  I soak my saving brush in the water while I am taking a shower.  Then use the brush and soap to lather up with afterwards.  You have to be careful because the water is very hot but it is a better shave and nice.

Now, Pelosi was surprised by this because ( I think) she was surprised Jon Stewart brought it up.  And she was surprised because no one in the regular media would bring this up.  And no one in the regular media brings this up because they are going through that revolving door.

Quite a subversive thing he did there.

102 I miss those safety razors like my dad used to use. They still have those kinds around?

Ace had an advertiser a ways back...The Art of Shaving ... something or other.  They had straight and safety razors.  I bought some stuff.  The pre shave oil and a sandalwood shaving cream are the best.  I will reorder when they run out.

Thanks for that, Vic.  When I get hot water at the top of the heater cycle, I get pretty close to the perfect shave.  After what I go through for my coffee, it looks like microwaving my shaving soap water is just one more thing to do

For those interested in shaving with soap and brush, skip the boar bristle brushes.  Not worth the time and smell.  Save your pennies if you have to, because the badger brushes are better by an order of magnitude, even the cheap ones.

104 Wet shaving is the least expensive AND most comfortable shave I've found.  Try Feather blades.  So sharp & smooth I can hear the razor rubbing across the whiskers more than I can feel it.  FWIW I have curly hair & get ingrown whiskers if I'm not careful.  Ugh.

105 My husband wet shaves.  He LOVES it.  He had all the things and cremes and blades and bowl heater and menthol and witch hazel and every fragrance under the sun that turns into shave creme somehow in that specially shaped bowl.

I was bitching about shaving my legs one day and he chirps up and offered his services with all his gear and that scary looking razor.  I  declined.

My equivalent is to get the occasional hour long facial - but I find those to be rather hit or miss depending on the products they use.
