Republicans Mulling What They Will Demand In Exchange For Debt Ceiling Hike Before They Cave And Just Raise The Debt Ceiling

The surrender addicts in the GOP need a hit but before they can surrender they need to pretend they are going to fight for something. With the debt ceiling hike coming up this month they have narrowed their phony demands down to two options.

Several House members told The Washington Post on Monday that Republican leaders have narrowed their list of possible debt-limit strategies to two options: trading a one-year extension for approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, or trading a one-year extension for repeal of a provision of the Affordable Care Act.

A clean debt-limit extension is not yet on the GOPÂ’s radar....

Oh it will be. It will be.

You know how I know the GOP will fold on all of these things? Boehner has already said he won't push this to default.

See, the key to playing chicken is to make the other guy you won't swerve first. Announcing before you start your engine that you will be turning away well before you come close to colliding sort of eliminates the other guy's incentive to give in.

Also, you may have noticed the GOP has a bit of history when it comes to this sort of thing. Remember Boehner's pledge to tie hikes in the debt ceiling to equal or greater spending cuts? Yeah, that died with the Ryan-Murray budget deal that busted the sequester to pieces.

Now if the GOP is going to try this, why are they even thinking of pushing the Keystone Pipeline? Isn't this the year of ObamaCare (and amnesty)? Why would you make this about anything other than OBAMACARE? Even if they cave on it, and they will, at least they'd be making people aware of something I best most people don't know...sure you'll be paying more but you'll also be bailing out the insurance companies for the privilege.

Oh and have you noticed the stock market has been tanking for a couple of weeks? Of course the media isn't really playing that up because it's not good for Obama but the second they can tie "Your retirement account is shrinking because the GOP is playing games with the debt ceiling!" you know they will. Is that a lie? Sure. Will it matter to Team Media/Democrat? Not a bit.

Personally, I think they should just pass the damn debt ceiling. They are going to do it anyway and they won't get anything for it. The list of GOP surrenders is long enough, there's nothing to gained by adding another one.

18 Once more: The more often you say "yes" to someone, the harder it is to say "no" the next time. The current GOP Surrender caucus has said "yes" too many times- they won't say "no" now. But, honestly- the deb ceiling is going to be raised forever. Just admit it and get it over with. If you're never going to use it as a weapon, then the next best option is to remove it as a weapon all together- so your enemy can't use it against you.

I'm OK with the GOP passing on the debt ceiling fight. They don't do well in the court of public opinion there anyway. I would trade that battle for an ObamaCare drumbeat any day.

Especially if the drumbeat starts including the disaster that the end of this year will bring, when 10's of millions all lose their employer insurance at once.

84 The only way to sop this is to stop putting money and effort into the failing GOP and put that money and effort into the GOP's successor party.

But third parties come with so many problems, don't they? Being in the minority, getting on the ballot as an official party, all the things always ascribed to official third parties.

Except that the largest registered voting party in the U. S. right now is also effectively that third party - the Independents. Now the problem of course is that the Independent party we want happens to currently have too high a percentage of Democrats. We need instead an election-winning, governing majority of non-Liberal non-Democrat Independents.

So instead of even doing so little as paying any more negative attention to anyone still claiming to be a Republican, we need to steer as much effort, influence and money to those people leading with our principles willing to run as registered Independents. No more Orwellian anti-Tea Party rhetoric, no "tea-bagging" slurs, just Independent politicians running on sound conservative values and platforms.

A virtual political party. A virtual conservative political party electing real flesh and blood conservatives to real political offices.

Independently. Sort of how we declared we wanted things in the first place.

It's one of the things I have been thinking about for the last couple of weeks (and have speculated on much longer) is that if the repubs win big in 2014, Dear Leader and Yellen are going to pull the fed reserve trigger. Either stop QE or raise interest rates....or both. Then the economy collapses and the repubs get the blame.

It might be one of the reasons Boehner doesn't want the GOP to win.

You're right, but do you want to be the guy that publicly pops it with a needle and makes everyone's retirement get cut in half? Something tells me people aren't going to be lining and voting for the GOP if they trigger a meltdown, even if it was a long time coming.

Everyone knows the housing bubble and subsequent meltdown was created by liberal government programs like Fannie and Freddie Mac, but I don't remember American voters giving the GOP any credit when it all came crashing down in 2008.

If your goal is simply "Let it Burn" then I guess I can see the logic in wanting some sort of bond default, but don't expect the country to give pats in the back to the GOP if they're the ones that decide to finally pop it.

My wife has a Facebook page, and occasionally I'll look at it. Liberals really can't help themselves, it only takes a handful to vomit all over the place and stink it up.

I've blocked a few of her aquaintances without her knowing (I know I'm evil) it's usually only the serial offenders that have decided FaceBook is their tool for political activism and decide to insult everyone else on a regular basis.

The best thing you can do is defriend these people, I do think it eventually catches up to them.

Watching two professional opponents fight each other, each leery of taking risks or chancing punishment, is a boring ordeal.

Such men often entertain comeback dreams because many of them at one time were considered prospects themselves, but the nature of their job is such that the professional opponent's defensive, 'not get hurt' style becomes ingrained, and they forget how to fight to win. They are, in a very literal sense, professional losers and they've forgotten how to be anything more than professional losers.

494 I agree that the Independent Party is far too made up of leftists and Democrats, they're definitely in charge and the bulk of the membership. However, they're small, weak, and largely disorganized, so they are absolutely ready for a coup. It would only take a handful of dedicated, determined, and cunning tea party types in each state to overthrow the party and turn it into a conservative movement complete with all of its branding, established party credentials, and contacts in place.

Then when it comes time to pay for those goods and services, Congress says "Goodness me! We can't afford this! We won't pay for it."

You bought it. Not raising the debt ceiling means you're not paying for those items you specifically bought.
