Science!
— Dave in Texas

This morning rdbrewer asked nobody in particular on twitter:

Really? Well I'm glad you asked.

twin pack (400x300).jpg

Water Displacement formula, 40th attempt.

It took them 40 attempts to get the water displacing formula worked out. But they must have been really good, because the original secret formula for WD-40®—which stands for Water Displacement perfected on the 40th try—is still in use today.

Convair, an aerospace contractor, first used WD-40 to protect the outer skin of the Atlas Missile from rust and corrosion. The product actually worked so well that several employees snuck some WD-40 cans out of the plant to use at home.

DrewM seemed surprised to learn this too, even though I thought this was well known. He told me I should never assume everyone posesses valuable redneck knowledge. So I'm sharing.

Stay lubricated my friends.

37 A few years following WD-40's first industrial use, Rocket Chemical Company founder Norm Larsen experimented with putting WD-40 into aerosol cans, reasoning that consumers might find a use for the product at home as some of the employees had. The product made its first appearance on store shelves in San Diego in 1958.

In 1960 the company nearly doubled in size, growing to seven people, who sold an average of 45 cases per day from the trunk of their cars to hardware and sporting goods stores in the San Diego area.

In 1961 the first full truckload order for WD-40 was filled when employees came in on a Saturday to produce additional concentrate to meet the disaster needs of the victims of Hurricane Carla along the U.S. Gulf coast. WD-40 was used to recondition flood and rain damaged vehicles and equipment.

67 @50- They also tell you, at least they used to, not sure about now, to use it on locks. Do not do this. Also, do not use graphite. For dog gone sure, don't use both. You end up with locks full of sludge. If a lock just needs a slight lube job, there is a product called Tri-Flow. Use the "little red tube" inserted into the lock and a very small, split second squirt. Run your key in and out a few times then turn back and forth a few times. If locks are really grimey, flush with brakekleen first, then Tri-Flow. That'll be $50 please.

69 O/T (I guess): Ever wonder about spermicidal foam? It was invented by a guy named Joseph Sunnen. He was a successful businessman, whose original company manufactured several specialty machines. (His son, Bob and wife Sally were life long friends with my parents.) Anyway, old Joe was one of the original Rino's, pro-choice and all that. He also believed in social engineering, and was obsessed with ending 3rd world poverty. He felt the key to that was population control, that all poverty stemmed from too many kids. To that end he invented and marketed Emco Spermicidal Foam. I don't think the brand (or product) is around anymore. And, clearly it didn't work. I think it's kind of ironic that a self-made capitalist would come to the conclusion that the solution to poverty is pop.control, not economic growth and personal freedom...

WD 40 sucks as a lubricant.  It's unequalled as a water dispersant though.  Used to use it to dry up distributor caps and firearms.  For that, it is just fine.

Pro tip--for those hunting trips where things get crappy (waterfowl in particular) a DRY weapon sprayed with silicon provides excellent lubrication.  Silicon is inert, so it won't pickup dirt.  Also does well in the cold.

Rather broad claims..., "removes paint"? I'll be more careful. At any rate, the MSDS does say "15%" mineral oil..., so one has to concede that there is *some* lubricant in it, but to call it a lubricant, would be the same as calling it "paint remover".

Via Wikipedia: "Introduced in January 1904 by pharmaceutical and suture maker Van Horn & Sawtell of New York City,[2] and later acquired by Johnson & Johnson, K-Y Jelly's original stated purpose was as a surgical lubricant, and it was often chosen by doctors because of its natural base. Johnson & Johnson produced a sterile version of the product (intended for medical markets) and a non-sterile version (marketed as general-use personal lubricant) until 2004, when it discontinued the sterile line"

98 When I worked in Chicago back in teh nineties, I had a supervisor at work that had a Pontiac 6000.  I thought it was a joke because he could afford better, but he went on and on about how reliable it was and it got him everywhere.. even when the snow plows hadn't been out, 'cause it was FWD.

One morning, it was like -17 or something stupid... I went out to my truck.. I'd brought up from Alabama... and it was so cold you could smell the metal...  well, at first the ignition switch wouldn't even turn... but with some wiggling it finally did... no click, no nothing.. just a very faint red light slowly come on the dash...

So I call work , tell 'em I can't make it.  My supe says, no problem.. I'll come get you.  Here he drives up 15 minutes later in that damn Pontiac 6000.   There was only one other guy that made it to work that morning!  Damn!

100 The mechanic doing a wheel replacement on my tractor with bolts that had not been removed since the dawn of time used a product I had not seen before named
Blaster 16-PB Penetrating Catalyst and darned if it didn't work.  I tried it on some pliers that had rusted shut and it worked there as well (I had used Liquid Wrench, WD-40, and everything else to break those pliers free to no avail).  Amazon and Tractor Supply have it.  Probably toxic as hell, but it does work as advertised.

103 What about the Pontiac 6000? Posted by: Waterhouse at June 01, 2013 03:45 PM (zrUCy) Well, from what I understand, the original plan was to call it the Pontiac 5998. Some whiz-bang marketer told corporate that 5998 didn't have that sense of urgency, and that they needed a name that would propel people towards a brand on it's death march. So, 6000 was born. Sorta like Andre 3000, but with twice the number and one fifth the cool factor.

PB Blaster rocks.  Next best thing to a hot wrench. Also if you douse the fasteners at reassembly it retards rust formation greatly.

118 Pro tip--for those hunting trips where things get crappy (waterfowl in particular) a DRY weapon sprayed with silicon provides excellent lubrication. Silicon is inert, so it won't pickup dirt. Also does well in the cold.

It seems that the navigation system was water cooled.  On the ground they would circulate water through the system but they kept having a "vapor lock" problem that would stall the flow.  One of the contractors got this bright idea to let the water coming out pour into a coffee can so to relieve the pressure problem.

At my last day job, I was in charge of changing  all   the     carbide    inserts  in the milling and lathe tools.  It was  practically impossible to get the guys to do that properly.

The coolant dries on the  screws that hold   the inserts and makes them difficult to remove   (Torx drives will strip themselves it you look at them the wrong way). Proper practice is to clean everything with a Q-Tip before reassembling with that  copper lube.

164 Hey,how about you reduce your own ginormous carbon footprint you bitch?

At a fundraiser last night in Chicago, President Barack Obama signaled that heÂ’s interested in his legacy as a president and insisted that heÂ’s willing to work with anyone.

“My only interest is making sure that when I look back 20 years from now, I say I accomplished everything that I could while I had this incredible privilege to advance the interests of the broadest number of Americans and to make sure that this country was stronger and more prosperous than it was when I came into office.  ThatÂ’s my only interest,” the president said.

“And that means that I am willing to work with anybody — Republican, Democrat or independent — to get stuff done.  And I am not going to put the pause button on for the next year and a half or two years or whatever it is, simply to position myself for the next election.  If IÂ’ve got a Republican whoÂ’s willing to work with me to rebuild our infrastructure, letÂ’s go.  If IÂ’ve got a Republican out there whoÂ’s willing to get serious about what we need to deal with our long-term deficit challenges, IÂ’m prepared, come on, letÂ’s talk.”

But Obama then suggested heÂ’d draw the line at “climate change” deniers. “If IÂ’ve got somebody who has a different approach to dealing with climate change — I donÂ’t have much patience for people who deny climate change, but if youÂ’ve got creative approaches, market-based approaches, tell me about them.  If you think IÂ’m doing it the wrong way, let me know. IÂ’m happy to work with you,” said Obama.

The fundraiser at a private residence was to support the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The fact that more libs aren't creeped out by that is disturbing. We're so critical of our candidates it looks truly freaky to us that they're not.

184 Hi, HH!

Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at June 01, 2013 12:56 PM (zrlmb)

185 A general thought--thinking about Mr. Paul's recent brilliant observations on immigration, maybe the first thing our brave Republican leaders should understand about their brave, new "equality of opportunity" world is that it so far seems suspiciously close to being "inequality before the law" in order to get votes. I think folks can vote for Democrats if they want that. It certainly seems that those who obeyed American laws and did not sneak across our border aren't having as equal a chance to opportunity as those who did. But who cares about "ethos" when votes are to be had? So, to rectify this apparently unstoppable problem we have of politicians who simply want to get the media off their back, here is an agreement I would--honestly--sign up for tomorrow. Since the current American population is not good enough for our politicians or institutions, then if we must have 12 million new citizens, let us take the most recent 12 million of those from around the globe who applied for the lottery, did not make it, and stayed home--vice the 12 million who told us to go shove our rules. Them we send back. A gift return, as it were, for a bad Christmas gift. Let us exchange the law-breaking of the world we have now for an equivalent amount of the law-abiding. Lets us take the modest over the arrogant. Let us take those who think some things are bigger than themselves, and rid ourselves of those who demand you think they are bigger than you. This I would sign up for.

As I recall, you run (or sprint) past the three stones that open the portcullises and then use the Whirlwind Sprint shout to sail through before the portcullises close again.  If nothing is working, you can open the in-game console and use the tcl command to turn off collisions, allowing you to move past any obstacle.  Or consult uesp.net, which has been the main site for info on the Elder Scrolls games for almost two decades.

Posted by: Adam at June 01, 2013 05:10 PM (Aif/5) Actually I think the best part is how be badly tries to parse his statements calling for mass murder as some kind of impossible conditional so he can excuse himself from saying it but still get away with saying it, but he screws it up with context and makes it clear he *is* saying it, then denies saying it in the comments and goes on and on about how all he wants is a peaceful solution. And by "peaceful solution" he of course means murdering people he disagrees with. He also accused a commenter of "stalking" him by posting a link to his facebook page. But the comment in which he makes the accusation is via facebook, and itself links to his facebook page. The dude is some kind of loughneresque crazy and I would not be surprised if he is On The Path To A Speedway Bombing. 207 Sorry, this ancient daywalker isn't awake for the ONT, and weather permitting, I'll be working on installing a patio when the gaming thread is on. NB: I have a wonderful landlord/lady. When the "wooden trampoline" of a deck became unsafe to walk on, they gave Mr. Empire and me the option of what to do -- replace the deck, put in a patio, or turn it into grass. I was the only one with a real interest, so I opted for a patio, the kind I wanted. Mr. Empire declined to say, so I told C&A I wanted a fieldstone patio that I'd put in if they bought the rocks and mortar. So that's where I am as weather permits.

211 You too can blow $200 Million ...

In 2008, Minor sold the company he founded, CNET, to CBS in a deal valued at $1.8 billion, from which Minor’s haul was reportedly $200 million. Minor then went on a spending spree — he called it “investment” — that looked an awful lot like a mid-life crisis. He bought hotels and mansions and race horses. He also frequently found himself in legal disputes over unpaid bills, hassles that included losing a multimillion-dollar lawsuit to Sotheby’s auction house. It was reported last year that he and his new blonde wife owed the state of California more than $10 million in unpaid income taxes.

254 Tammy -- I'll give you all the help I can, but I started out with naked ground, not a pre-existing pond, so I'm not sure how much good I can do you. I dug this one out, got Carl to bring me a couple of front-loader buckets of dirt to even things out, used a rubber liner, and over the years edged it with fieldstone, put a fieldstone path around it, and edged the "hill" with vertical fieldstone in a curving sweep the mower could maneuver around. I'd have to see at least a pic of your stockpond and know what you want to do with it to make any recommendations.

264 Yay the govt used our tax dollars to create this most informative site for girls ages 10-16... GirlsHealth.Gov "anal sex (say: AYN-uhl seks) = sex that involves putting the penis in the anus, or butt." "mutual masturbation (say: MYOO-chuh-wuhl mas-tur-BAY-shuhn) = when two people touch each other's sex organs or genitals for sexual pleasure." "over-the-counter (say: OH-vur thuh KOWN-tur) = when you can buy a medicine without a prescription (a doctor's order). Examples include cold medicine, medicines for stomach pain, or pain relievers." This one is particularly important for a ten year old: "folate or folic acid (say: FOL-ihk ASS-ihd) = an important B vitamin used in the body to make new cells. Girls who are sexually active should get enough folic acid to lower the risk of some birth defects, such as spina bifida, should pregnancy occur. Taking a folic acid pill is the best and easiest way to be sure you are getting enough." If you have to spell out how to pronounce words like "over" or "the" is the kid really old enough to require that the government teach them what vitamins to take to fuel their pregnancy?

Hubby came home yesterday, just as the sirens were going off.

When the storm trackers on tv said..."Multi-vortex carousel on the ground, near El Reno, headed due East!"...

[That meant it was headed right for us.]

Hubby said..."That's it. We're getting out of here."

So we got in the truck and headed away from it.

He's seen too many people trapped in debris over the years, so that was his main concern.

Trouble was, hundreds of other people in our area had the same idea.

The traffic was unbelievable...thousands of people were evac'ing SW Oklahoma City.

It took six hours to get back home, with debris and flooding conditions knocking out some of the roads.

There were some deaths, sadly.

A young mother and her baby were killed not far from our house.

277 Empire1, you will soon have me kneeling before you, kissing the hem of your gown. Dug it out??? I am beyond impressed. Thor dug me out a wee pond when we had a house in Lakewood many years ago, and we both just loved it. Do y'all have your very own front-end loader? I want one sooooooo badly. I know what I want to plant around it, but it's so much bigger that anything I have attempted before I am overwhelmed. A lot of it is overrun with honeysuckle, too, which doesn't bother me per se, but I'm afraid it'll devour most of what I want to plant. I may jusy stick with trees and shrubs, but I'd like a good sized planting of flowers around a bench. I'd love to see pics of all your projects.

285 Tammy -- No, no, the front-end loader is our landlord's! We rent their old house on a farm (they have a "new" brick one maybe 100 feet away). If I need dirt or something, he brings it in from the back 50. The front-loader mounts on his John Deere. You might want to look at some of the pond supply companies and see what they have with water-edge plants that can handle soggy soil, and use those between the pond and your dry-soil plants. There are quite a few very pretty ones, I can assure you!

Tammy al-Thor, water lillies are pretty hardy and will keep the shade in place for the fish. And you'll need a decent pump than can turn it over at least 1 time each day.

Now that attention is brought to WD40.... we can expect the greenies and the commies to find something horribly wrong with it and ban it.

What do you think they will think of?  Contributes to excessive soda drinking?  Emits green house gases?  Makes you color blind?  Get ready you know it's coming.

As it is you probably have to scan your driver's license to get it.  You have to scan your license to buy canned-air to dust your computer, at least in WA.

315 Principle ingredient, per the MSDS, is Stoddard solvent, the stuff we use in the shop to wash oil and grease off auto parts.  In fact straight Stoddard solvent works just about as well to displace water, too.   WD-40 is one the great triumphs of marketing over common sense.  Despite the touts, (and the label), it is no more of a lubricant than common kerosene.   Been there, done that, threw the T-shirt in the trash.

321 Another use for WD-40 is as a penetrant to brake loose rusted nuts and
bolts.  There are better commercially available products like Liquid Wrench,
but someone came up a home-brew that is kicking ass!

A 50-50 mix of acetone and ATF has now become the way to go to loosen
stubborn fasteners.
