Happy Monday. March. Huh.

Former IRS official Lois Lerner may or may not be taking the Fifth again when she appears for testimony at House Oversight on Wednesday. There seems to be a little confusion on that point.

The Obama administration says it's going to offer Russia a combination of sanctions threats and a "diplomatic way out" of Ukraine, but the Russians aren't talking like they're looking for a way out. In fact, it looks like they're still looking for more ways in.

People are still finding fun ways to screw up their lives on social media.

And, if I can borrow MPPP's thing for a second, here's a Hollywood-ish story for ya:

A front page mention?  Guess my life is complete now.  Anyway, I can't access twitter from my computer; someone fill me in on the note, please?

And now:

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

While big pictures brought a studio prestige, what kept them operating from day to day were the “meat and potatoes” fixtures such as cartoons at Warner Brothers, Three Stooges shorts at Columbia or Ritz Brothers shorts at Fox or the Wheeler and Woolsey films at RKO.  These last came under the rubric of “B” pictures, which were vital in helping a studio absorb overhead.  You have to remember that, at this time, studios also owned their own chains of theaters; while they hoped at least ten films a year would be money-makers, they had to crank out a great deal of product to keep the theaters going and to at least break even at the end of a fiscal year.

Most B pictures were shot in twelve to eighteen days.  Depending on the director, sometimes retakes were never made; Woody Van Dyke (who got his start as an A.D. on Theda BaraÂ’s Cleopatra) was infamously known as “One-Take Woody.”  As far as scripts were concerned, B writers often reduced story costs by simply taking an “A” script and reworking it.  A Western might be transferred to a Pacific island, or a horse race into an auto race.

Even classic pictures would be ransacked and turned into melodramas; the writer-director Charles Marquis Warren made a Western at Fox in 1957 called Copper Sky, starring Jeff Morrow.  He later boasted, “It was a damn good picture, simply because I stole it from a hell of a script – African Queen !”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

"I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul, a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country. Â… I wouldnÂ’t have invited him to my ranch if I didnÂ’t trust him."

And the writer is saying that Bush misread Putin.

With the exception of the word "trustworthy", I find every word to be accurate.

Straightforward
Deeply committed to HIS country
Best interests of HIS country

Nothing about the remainder of the world.
Putin is gonna do what Putin feels is best for Russia.

A stark reminder of why we have the phrase 'cruel and unusual punishment.' Although it can be tempting at times to declare that he punishment should fit the crime, you have to wonder at what it does to a culture to have the government carry out such acts.

When dealing with a mad dog you simply shoot it and be done with it. You don't assemble more dogs to rip it apart in pursuit of some twisted justice. It does nothing to aid the mad dogs victims and is likely to have an ill effect on the executioner dogs.

165 "In the Secret Place of Your Presence"-a devotional from what I consider one the very best ministries on the radio-Loving Grace Ministries. The host has a program, "Let;s Talk About Jesus" a truly Christ centered ministry which people can get on the internet at WFIL FM? at 11:30 EST http://tinyurl.com/lv2dolc And for those that can't get the tinyurl and have an interest you can find a link for the devotional by going to the site, "Loving Grace Ministries" and clicking on "what's new". P.S. I am not a member of the staff. I just so like his program which is both a Christian reflection program and a call in program and the retreats they offer are great!

And the Mac Pro has to be the lowest volume major product in the whole Apple lineup, by a large margin. With its huge margins, assembling the workstations in the US is a minor hit compared to bring something like iPad production to the US. Likewise, it is the product with the highest level of customization options at Apple today. A pretty blatant meaningless PR gesture.

Yep, what they're really doing is configuring a kit rather than what most people would think of as assembly. It isn't a product that people buy in cookie cutter off the shelf form, and is very low volume compared to just about anything else from Apple, so doing the final customization in the continental US is a meaningless gesture. What Jobs said to Obama, "Those jobs aren't coming back," in fact were never here, still holds.

246 "the Ukraine" was commonly used in English. And many people still default to it — but, to be blunt, it's totally wrong.

Difficult habit to break, though. Like Ceylon.

249 Wondering: Is there some grammarian rule that dictates when the article *the* is used when referring to a country....like The Ukraine or the...ummm...can't think of another right off hand, but I'm sure there are others...Oh, The Soviet Union (when it was around, but will be back)...and, oh, the United States. But I've never heard anyone say *The Canada* or *The Mexico*. Help me.

In the case of the US or the USSR, the "the" is referring to the UNION.  In the case of the US, it's the union of the 50 states.  We don't refer to "The California" or "The Montana," but we do refer to "The UNITED States."   The same goes for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics,     or the European Union.

Left shoulder. Over 40+ years ago I rode big bikes- choppers I built myself- on the street. I drew a tattoo design I never got around having inked until now.

Background? A circle. With a Cross of Iron laid on its side.

Foreground? A red heart- with Art Deco wings.

Done in remembrance of my two dead wives-
-and Riding the Thunder, so long ago.

"See 'ya around, girls. Much bad you can say about me, but you can't say 'I did not love "my girls...."'

253 Did ol' Liz ever think of allowing her maid to park INSIDE THE GATE?

No. Of course not. (I'm assuming this gate was a driveway gate as most Hollywood types gravitate towards those kind of dwellings.

If  it was in NYC or some other place and it was not a driveway gate, then where did ol' liz park HER car?

Just saying that the pampered and well off (particularly if they been for a long time) don't perceive the world the way you or I do. They see class distinctions that they would never cross no matter how much they liked the maid. SHE'S A MAID. She doesn't deserve special treatment except of course by other of her class be cause she works for the better people than you folks.

Liz was drunk most of the time so any seeming moments of charity or bravery were most likely alcohol induced and Publicist inspired.

The bread basket of eastern Europe open plains and rich soil with lots of rivers running through it.

256 We have those here in the U.P., and they are cool. A long while ago I read an article in a Readers Digest about a man who wondered how they could pound their heads all day and not get brain damage. To find out he dissected a woodpecker, and actually said he wanted to find out how God had designed the bird! Anyway, the brain was covered by a soft layer, followed by a hard layer, followed by a soft layer. The reason I remember this is because when I read it I wondered why helmets were not designed this way. It makes sense that a soft layer on the outside would absorb so much impact.
