You Didn't Think The Progressive Mob's Thirst For Scalps Would End With Mozilla, Did You?
— JohnE.

Moving right along, meet the "Drop Dropbox" campaign.

On April 9th, Dropbox announced that Condoleezza Rice will be joining their Board of Directors. Dropbox's CEO, Drew Houston, posted the following message:

..We're proud to welcome Dr. Condoleezza Rice to our Board of Directors. When looking to grow our board, we sought out a leader who could help us expand our global footprint. Dr. Rice has had an illustrious career as Provost of Stanford University, board member of companies like Hewlett Packard and Charles Schwab, and former United States Secretary of State. WeÂ’re honored to be adding someone as brilliant and accomplished as Dr. Rice to our team.

This is deeply disturbing, and anyone — or any business — who values ethics should be concerned.

Why is this? Because she was a part of the Bush administration? Because she is a Republican and we should hate Republicans? I mean, come on, isn't Al Gore on Apple's Board? He's no saint!

No. This is not an issue of partisanship. It makes sense that Dropbox would want an accomplished, high-level, well-connected individual on their Board of Directors as they prepare for their IPO.

Well, I'm glad to hear this isn't a partisan affair.

President Bush's National Security Advisor during the lead-up to the Iraq War, and was intimately involved in the decision to go to war with Iraq and spoke publicly in support of it. She was an integral part of the Bush administration's campaign of lies surrounding the war, working to further public support of the war by lying about Iraq's non-existent weapons of mass destruction.
Right. Just like you said, no partisanship here.

And finally:

Condoleezza Rice should not be on the Board of Directors of Dropbox and her selection shows that Drew Houston and the senior management at Dropbox are ethically short-sighted.

Tell Drew Houston: drop Condoleezza Rice or we will #DropDropbox

Meanwhile, Democrats are currently defending Lois Lerner against a McCarthyist witch hunt or something. Strange times...

Thanks to ADC.

37 dropbox is file storage in "the cloud". You get a free account to store a gig or so of anything you like. The app gives you a dropbox "folder" on your computer that can be opened from any computer in the world. Drop a file in it at work, and when you get home, the file is also in your home dropbox folder. It's pretty cool. and free for a limited amount of space.

"Food waste is a data-poor area," says the committee, and advises starting to control it with "a non-legislative approach". Wrong. Don't they realise that hardly anyone does as they're told unless they're forced to? Especially if it means less money and less of what they like. I long for a strict nanny state, to bring back rationing, so no one would be allowed to over-stuff themselves with great slabs of meat daily, or waste their crusts or peelings, reject twirly cucumbers or knobbly fruit and veg.

If homos are 3% of population (generous estimate) the conservatives are 0.3% of the population, probably in areas that do not make any difference, vote wise or protest wise. Bill Ayers would never be prevented from being on someone's board, or from delivering a commencement address. I can work with them even if the Internet goes down, which it does with some regularity in my work environment.

94 What's sad is that dropbox is one of the only 'free' internet services which does not make its revenue steam off of spying on you and selling that information... We don't use it for business, because we have not really done a security assessment... but its main competitors Microsoft and Google BOTH say they have a 'license to use' any data stored in their clouds...

99 #OutrageOfTheWeek could eventually lead to companies growing a thicker skin about petty crusades like this. Once it's no longer extraordinary for companies to be targeted like this, there isn't the perceived need for damage control, and savvy advisors may convince the first brave few to start ignoring this stuff or even openly asserting their rights to answer to shareholders and actual customers, not the perennially indignant. No one's made money betting on corporate courage lately, but I can still hope.

104 The app gives you a dropbox "folder" on your computer that can be opened from any computer in the world. Drop a file in it at work, and when you get home, the file is also in your home dropbox folder. It's pretty cool. and free for a limited amount of space. Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at April 10, 2014 11:38 AM (Z7PrM) It also gives you the ability to share files and folders with other Dropbox users. It's handy if you need to get a large file to someone else. My wife and I have a shared folder. If I need to send a file to her, I drop it in the folder, and it appears on her device. We use it a lot for recipes.

142 BTW, I should point out that although Dropbox is cloud storage, it is also an automatic backup system. For example, when you put a file on your work computer and then it's synced to your laptop, it's in a directory on both machines' hard drives. So it exists on each computer PLUS on the cloud. I do a lot of mathematical collaboration and I share folders with my co-authors. Extremely convenient.

147 >>>85 DropBox is a private storage server holding and transferring personal data for individuals, businesses and the NSA in the Cloud. ----------- I don't think Dropbox stores your stuff in the cloud. It only synchronizes the contents of the Dropbox among all of your devices so your files are accessible from each device. Google Drive is similar but it actually stores your files in the cloud. The functional difference is that with Google Drive you can access your files from any device or computer connected to the internet. With Dropbox you can only do it from your own devices that have Dropbox installed on them, but on the plus side, your device doesn't need to be connected to the internet because the files are on your local drive.

In other words, if you are protesting Dropbox, they can drop you too- without giving a reason or being subject to prosecution. If I don't want to make you a cake, you cannot force me to or prosecute me. The reason I will not bake your cake is irrelevant. The problem I have with these situations is not that Leftards act like Leftards; it's that they want to have the right to slander and protest against you without consequence or equal risk. Free markets and equal protection sort these matters out very nicely and easily.

157 83 Alberta - on cloud storage, your suspicions are correct. Dropbox itself has had at least one major security lapse that I can recall within the last few years. In addition to security questions, there are major issues with derivative uses of your data (Google) and ownership of and access to your data - many subscription-based services lock you out of your data if you aren't paid up and there are often suspiciously inconvenient issues with downloading your own backups. I've advised attorney clients of mine to avoid using Dropbox, Google Docs/Gmail and other similar services for sensitive docs and communication even though the bar associations generally approve them, and the we-own-your-data warning comes from clients of mine who found themselves locked out of their own clients' data over billing disputes. Buyer beware.

214 So here we go again - leftwing pressure on a company to purge a person on the right (I won't say "rightwing" because Rice was in GWB's administration, for God's sake - she's hardly a paleocon).  Will they cave?  Won't they?  The drama begins and the conservative outrage starts again.

The Left always starts these staredowns with an implied "Or else".  But I'd like to know, just how strong is their hand?  What's behind the menacing fist-waving?  How much juice do they REALLY have?

If a business caters to leftie interests, I assume they have to take a boycott threat seriously.  The same thing goes for the right.  But let's rule out those outliers, and take something very middle-of-the-road, something everyone uses.  Say, Kellogg's Corn Flakes.  If the homo-mafia tried the same stunt on them that they tried on Mozilla, how much of a threat would they really be, if they were pushed to the wall and forced to put up or shut up?

I don't think they really have anything like the power they imply and imagine they do.  The Chick Fil-A debacle showed how flimsy the Left really is when they face a determined enemy on the Right.  It's the same thing we saw when the Muslim world made a big deal about boycotting Danish products; people in the west pushed back by deliberately buying Danish products and the whole boycott fizzled.

So why do these companies cave?  When the Left draws a bead on them, they react like mice hypnotized by a cobra.  They don't seem able to think.  If they just kept their heads, they'd realize that caving in is the WORST thing they could do, because the backlash from the Right is FAR more damaging than anything the Left can inflict on them.  Look at Mozilla.  Look at the Susan G. Komen Foundation - they'll never recover from the debacle with Planned Parenthood.

What we need is some way of making clear that we will support companies that refuse to bend to leftist fascism, and will punish those who do.  At the moment, it's all ad hoc; nobody is really prepared for what to do when it's their turn on the Left's rack.  If companies know that they will, in effect, be indemnified for any harm the Left tries to do to them, they might be able to summon up some courage.

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) I understand what you are saying but have to disagree slightly. I have often used a remote drive app on my Mac. But to synch with DB through the cloud you access a server which copies the data and then sends it on; hence the vulnerability. He didn't believe in the power of any government authority other than the county sheriff, and not the feds at all. Refused to pay his federal taxes. His wiki below Gordon Wendell Kahl (January 8, 1920 – June 3, 1983) was an American involved in two fatal shootouts with law enforcement officers in the United States in 1983.[1] Raised on a North Dakota farm,[2] Kahl was a highly decorated turret gunner during World War II.[3] After the war, "he had a 400-acre (1.6 km2) farm near Heaton, Wells County, North Dakota,[4] [but] bounced around the Texas oilfields in later life as a mechanic and general worker."[2] In 1967, Kahl wrote a letter to the Internal Revenue Service[citation needed] stating that he would no longer pay taxes to the, in his words, "Synagogue of Satan under the 2nd plank of the Communist Manifesto." During the 1970s, Kahl organized the first Texas chapter of the Posse Comitatus, although he later left the group and was not a member at the time of the 1983 shootouts. In 1976 he appeared on a Texas television program stating that the income tax was illegal and encouraging others not to pay their income taxes.[citation needed] A 1991 movie based on these events was called In the Line of Duty: Manhunt in the Dakotas (aka Midnight Murders, and in the Netherlands as In the Line of Duty: The Twilight Murders), starring actor Rod Steiger.[5] The events also inspired the making of the documentary film Death & Taxes, which was released in 1993.[6] feels similar this will not end well

There IS a registrant e-mail, but it just goes back to the same proxy: DROP-DROPBOX.COM@domainsby proxy.com.

313 WMD again? Everyone in the world was convinced Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction - including Saddam Hussein. Everyone was surprised when they couldn't be found - including Saddam Hussein. There were no "lies" from the Bush administration. There were, apparently, factors they didn't know or intelligence which was faulty, but that faulty intelligence came from many countries' intelligence agencies, not just ours. Looking back, going to war with Iraq was a mistake - especially after Bush turned it into a mission to bring democracy to the muslims - but given the information available at that time, a convincing case was made, and I believe their statements were honest.
