Nightmare Thread
— Ace

When I was a kid, my parents took me to a drive-in. (Yeah, I'm old enough that there were still a few drive-ins around when I was a kid -- but they were dying out, man! It wasn't like I was Kinicke in Grease taking dates to them!)

Anyway, we saw some movie. Forget which. Probably a Burt Reynolds movie. (Yes, I'm old enough that when I was a kid they were still letting Burt Reynolds make movies. But his box office was declining, man! Within years he'd be doing Stroker Ace.)

But the trailer that came before it scared the shit out of me.

I've been trying to find this for years and years. Tonight I thought it might be Fulci's The Beyond, but it wasn't.

I realized, after all these years, the title was Beyond the Door.

Now, yes, this is such a blatant Exorcist rip-off it's not funny. But then, I hadn't see the Exorcist when I was a kid so I didn't know that.

Still, it's a pretty creepy trailer. What on earth were my parents doing taking me to a theater showing trailers like this. more...

[Vinnie] Tonight's Flaming Douch Award Belongs To..
— Open Blog

These magnificent specimens of human debris, and their 100 guests.

THE Muslim wedding of a seven-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl has been raided by police.

Cops arrested the Muslim cleric conducting the sick ceremony and the childrenÂ’s parents in PakistanÂ’s largest city.

The cleric had not yet begun the ceremony of Mohammad Waseem, seven, and his bride Nishain Karachi, five – which was attended by 100 guests.

Edited [ace]: I took down the flaming douche... don't want to wear it out, and I'm thinking I need to hold off on it until I get a less sexual sort of douche for the pic.

Update [Vinnie] I agree with Ace.

Cindy SheehanÂ’s Campaign HQ Heavily Damaged in Late Night Attack (genghis)
— Open Blog

From Breitbart we get this woeful HallowÂ’s Eve tale about an incident at Cindy SheehanÂ’s campaign HQ last night.

”SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Just 5 days before the election, at 3a.m. on October 30th, all of the front windows of the Cindy Sheehan for Congress campaign offices were shattered.”
“Cindy Sheehan is a candidate for Congress in California's 8th Congressional District race against incumbent Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).”

Some specifics:
” "It seems to have been a calculated intimidation tactic," said Tiffany Burns, the Cindy for Congress campaign manager. "One of our computers was stolen, but no other property was taken from our offices and no surrounding buildings were targeted. Clearly they wanted to both frighten us and to gather information." Total damage to the campaign office is currently estimated at more than $5,000.”

Only $5k? ThatÂ’s play money. Hell, every time WickedPinto and me go out to a bar we try to rack up at least $10k in damages. Otherwise we consider it an evening wasted.

But something smells here. There is no way in hell that Sheehan has a chance of unseating Pelosi (Ace calls her BotoxMcGrannyRickets or something), and why have your people attack an overwhelmed underdog opponentÂ’s office? No reason. On the other hand, if youÂ’re said underdog lunatic opponent, whatÂ’s the best way to get back in the news cycle?

Yes, this requires some deep speculation.

"black" Silicon
— Purple Avenger

Interesting stuff. They have manufacturing scalability issues though.

...captures nearly all of the sun's light. "It is basically a sponge for light, both visible and infrared," says CEO Stephen Saylor...
The cool thing is that its picking up in the IR spectrum as well as visible, which traditional silicon is pretty useless for. Its usefulness as a power generating technology remains to be seen, but it looks pretty good for improving light sensor performance. Sounds like they've gotten a ~200X reduction in the amount of power needed to operate a light sensor. more...

Worst Pundit In The World Takes Incoherent Shot at Saracuda [Kensington]
— Open Blog

Michael Calderone at Politico (I know, I know) reports that Keith Olbermann made SNL guest host Surviving Christmas superstar Ben Affleck uncomfortable this afternoon by barging into the studios to watch the Phantoms ingenue rehearse what Calderone describes as a "savage" skit about Rachel Maddow's unhinged opening act.

Commenting on the skit through a spokesman, the mediocre sportscaster who doesn't realize that he's a Ted Baxter parody remarked:

“I’m not Sarah Palin,” Olbermann said. “I know how valuable it is to me. And it’s funny."

Drudge: Zogby Says McCain In Lead By 1 point. Surging Among NASCAR Fans, Blue Collar Workers And Men
— DrewM

Actually that sounds like one big group but whatever.

Zogby scares me because he's either right or just making shit up and you never know which. But hey 80 something hours out from Election Day, let's take it.

Here's a link to Gabe's post from earlier today about how you can help GOTV from home.

Let's drag McCain's ass over the finish line.

I have to admit I voted absentee yesterday. I swallowed hard and did something I never thought I would...I voted for John McCain. I felt very dirty and not the good kind but it had to be done.

Ohio Officials Lied About The Reason For Checking Joe The Plumber's Records
— DrewM

Routine? Kind of thing that just sort of happens as a public service? Mmmmm....not so much apparently.

Vanessa Niekamp said that when was asked to run a child-support check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher on Oct. 16, she thought it routine. A supervisor told her the man had contacted the state agency about his case.

Niekamp didn't know she just had checked on "Joe the Plumber," who was elevated the night before to presidential politics prominence as Republican John McCain's example in a debate of an average American.

The senior manager would not learn about "Joe" for another week, when she said her boss informed her and directed her to write an e-mail stating her computer check was a legitimate inquiry.

The reason Niekamp said she was given for checking if there was a child-support case on Wurzelbacher does not match the reason given by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Director Helen Jones-Kelley said her agency checks people who are "thrust into the public spotlight," amid suggestions they may have come into money, to see if they owe support or are receiving undeserved public assistance.

Niekamp told The Dispatch she is unfamiliar with the practice of checking on the newly famous. "I've never done that before, I don't know of anybody in my office who does that and I don't remember anyone ever doing that," she said today.

Sue Joe Sue! The depositions will be fun.

Oh and I'm not a lawyer but this sure looks like grounds for a criminal investigation, no?

Hey Ohio GOP or Team McCain...how about an ad in the state about this crap?
