Well, they know the batteries are getting worse. I remember buying batteries that came with a 5 year warranty. That time was usually pro-rated, so you'd get a discount depending on which year the battery needed replacing.
I just replaced one in my little truck that had a 3 year warranty. I got the replacement for free because it didn't last 3 years.
