Oh Fucking My: The New Ukranian Army.

I'd hit it. I'd hit it like the Wehrmacht. But a nice, kindly Wehrmacht which only wishes to please you and play with your hair a little.

And maybe touch you while you're sleeping.

Thanks to dri.

Philippino Prisoners Mass Dance Numbers, Again
— Ace

Radio Ga-Ga by Queen, which is kinda a good song, except for, you know.

Perfect for dancing prisoners.

They do a lot more of these. Thriller is good, on the off chance you've never seen it.

Thanks to Marky.

The People's Superhero
— Ace

Andy Samberg at his specialty again, the musical digital short with one big joke.

Usually a good joke though.

Yeah, everyone's linking the Hillary-Obama 3am phone call ad thing because it's political.

But I laughed at this one.

PS Amy Adams? Bunk.

New AOSHQ Style Guide
— LauraW

As a result of the latest dust-up with various female bloggers who feel that the site unfairly objectifies women, there will be some changes around the place.

Stop groaning, hey hey. It's not so bad. We're just going to ask you guys to observe some basic human shit, OK?

OK. From The Founder:

I don't want the site cleaned up. I want it tasteless. As a matter of fact, one of the criticisms made -- about taste/respect -- I'm implicitly rejecting. I don't want this to be a tasteful site. If someone isn't allowed to say they'd like to dork a girl up the squeakhole, then I don't want to run the blog.

Dudes.
We want this guy to run the blog. Obviously.

Do what you have to do, and remember that you're doing it for the blog.
This is your time.
Be a hero. more...

Andrew Sullivan: Obama is "pragmatic"
— Purple Avenger

In an otherwise rather refreshingly sane piece about Zombie Clintons, secrecy and paranoia, that all fills him with "waves of loathing and anxiety", Sully had to go and spoil it with this zinger:

...The country – scrambled by the post-baby-boomer pragmatism of Obama...
Unicorns are pragmatic? Who knew?

Tony Stewart Disses GoodYear
— LauraW

Don't know how many of you are into NASCAR. If you are, you've probably already seen this today.

Previously:

"There isn't anybody, I don't think, who is happy with the tires we have got," Stewart said. "After 10 years in the Cup Series, you learn to be highly disappointed with everything that Goodyear does."

Stewart pointed out that the tires at Las Vegas were inconsistent, with some going a full fuel run without a problem and others wearing quickly.

"I expect it to be wacky this week, too. I hate to say it, but the best thing that Goodyear does is make that gold trophy at the end of the year," Stewart added, referring to the gold car model that is given by the tire company to each year's champion. "That is one thing that they always do right. Everything from that moment on until the end of the year, it's a crapshoot. You never know what you're going to get when you get here."

Like most people, I have a love/hate thing with people who spout their mind all the time.

How much is Firestone paying him?
Just kidding.
But no. How much?

"Abstract Genetalia" Paintings Hang (Vaguely) In High School
— Ace

Eh. It's not that interesting, but it is dirty, and that's enough.

Apparently now artists can't even be bothered to draw realistic genitals anymore, which was pretty much the only thing keeping them relevant.

Ashland High School senior Colette Paré Miller [pictured above] will show her abstract paintings of the male and female genitalia at tonight's First Friday art walk, but they will be in a separate room and manned by a monitor to make sure children can't see them.

Saying they were not appropriate for students to view, Ashland School District officials insisted the large abstract works should be away from the public viewing area of student art at the Briscoe Art Wing in the former Briscoe Elementary School, which the district leases out to artists.

"When I painted them in class, there was as positive reaction. People thought they were beautiful," said Miller. "I don't think they are pornographic. They have all those colors. I didn't do them to scare anyone, but I did want to paint something controversial. I wanted people to be able to understand that a taboo subject can be presented in a beautiful way."

...

The blank space on the hallway wall where the pictures were originally hung will be emblazoned with a "censored" banner put up by Miller. Her first reaction was that all or none of her art should be shown, she said, and she was set to take it to Nuwandart on A Street, noted for its edgy, alternative showings.

Miller finally heeded the advice of Briscoe Wing artists who told her the old saying was true: For an artist there's no such thing as bad publicity, except your own obituary — and decided to leave the art, separated, on display where it was. Tom Kane, a fellow artist in whose studio the paintings will hang, contacted the media seeking coverage of the controversy.

In her defense she is just a high school senior, though it seems her understanding of what may be "scary" or innovative is somewhat limited by her youthful lack of savvy.

Kos Kid: Women Have It Great Under Islam!
— Ace

Excuses, excuses. Barbaric illiberal tyrannies are supplied with endless apologism because their hearts are in the right place (i.e., they are at war, hot or cold, with America).

And America of course is castigated for every flaw, real or imagined.

But don't question their patriotism. This particular chappie seems to think women have it better in Pakistan than in Pawtucket, but do not question his passionate love affair with the United States.

Before 9/11/01, the media relegated stories about women in Islamic societies to page B27, below the fold. Ever since 9/12/01, those same stories have screamed from the front pages in 100-point type.

Really? Um, I don't notice the MSM making an issue of the plight of Islamic women. I notice the alternative conservative media making such noises, but that is not in fact "the media," except in the demented imaginations of leftist fantasists.

The shift in discourse coincided with the launch of Bush's global "War on Terror," when various hawks began using the plight of women in Islam to illustrate the supposed perfidy of our "enemies," and to justify a series of military "interventions" -- invasions -- by Western powers.

"Enemies" like "Al Qaeda" and "the Taliban," he means.

In the United States, there's now an almost universally held belief that most women in Islamic societies face wretched persecution and that Islam itself is wholly to blame.

As to the first part: Of course, because it's true.

As to the second: No, it isn't Islam that's wholly to blame; it's also partly due to medieval tribal/cultural customs. However, Islam's aggressively anti-modernist stance certainly abets the persistence of prehistoric notions of female inferiority.

Most of the rest of the world has a much more enlightened, liberal view of female inferiority, to wit, we all still believe in it but we're nice enough not to say so.

But it is the elephant in the room, of course.

But there's scant empirical evidence to support the claim -- mostly, we're treated to detailed reports of horrific abuses in theocratic states like Saudi Arabia and Iran, despite the fact that just six percent of the Muslim world live in those two countries. If you ask average Americans how they came to their beliefs about how badly women suffer in Islamic societies, most will reply that "everyone knows it."

And the rest live in such feminist utopias as Pakistan, Indonesia, Libya, and Iran.

Oh, and the Sudan, where at least they're considerate enough to just rape the Christian and black women to death.

But I've seen no empirical data to suggest that an Islamic majority itself correlates with the subordination of women better than other co-variables like economic development, women's ability to serve in government, a political culture that values the rule of law or access to higher education. In other words, you can use a comparison of women's status in Saudi Arabia and Sweden to make an intellectually weak argument for Western superiority, but there's little support for the notion that women living in "traditional" Islamic cultures enjoy a lower social status than those in orthodox Christian, Jewish or Hindu communities, to name a few examples.

Self-Fisking.

...Or go to Utah, where tens of thousands of Mormon fundamentalists believe that women are literally the property of their fathers or husbands. Of course, Mormon fundamentalists are the exception that proves the endless benevolence and equality of the West, while whatever despicable caricature of justice perpetrated on a woman by the House of Saud is breathlessly recounted as emblematic of Islamic culture as a whole.

This just in, thousands of clit-less Mormon women being raped by their husband's family members in "honor rapings" inflicted for the crime of walking at night without a chaperone. Oh, and PS, then they get whipped and jailed for the crime of being gang-raped, the dirty whores.

Look at the way she was dressed -- I swear to God, I could see part of her eyebrow, Officer.

Gee, I sure fucking wished I could belong to the Reality Based Community.

An SR-71 Pilot Speaks [dri]
— Open Blog

Photobucket

"One day, high above Arizona, we were monitoring the radio traffic of all the mortal airplanes below us. First, a Cessna pilot asked the air traffic controllers to check his ground speed. 'Ninety knots,' ATC replied. A twin Bonanza soon made the same request. 'One-twenty on the ground,' was the reply. To our surprise, a navy F-18 came over the radio with a ground speed check. I knew exactly what he was doing. Of course, he had a ground speed indicator in his cockpit, but he wanted to let all the bug-smashers in the valley know what real speed was 'Dusty 52, we show you at 525 on the ground,' ATC responded. The situation was too ripe. I heard the click of Walter's mike button in the rear seat. In his most innocent voice, Walter startled the controller by asking for a ground speed check from 81,000 feet, clearly above controlled airspace. In a cool, professional voice, the controller replied, 'Aspen 20, I show you at 1,742 knots on the ground.' We did not hear another transmission on that frequency all the way to the coast." more...
