Rays/Marlins -- its not a joke anymore
— Purple Avenger

At the start of the season I predicted, in a drunken cranked out stupor, that it would be a Sunshine Series this year -- Rays/Marlins.

Here we are close to half way through the season and that seemingly insane prediction is still very very possible. The Rays are leading the AL east 2.5 games over the Dead Sox and the Marlins are only a game and a half behind the Sillies.

Here's the October Surprise everyone is looking for. Call me crazy, but if this happens, Fred Thompson may have a chance in November.

New Site Complaints, Suggestions Thread
— Ace

As some of you know, the new site was never really ready. I linked it when the old site was going through its periodic problems and seemed more unstable than usual. Just as a back-up, a contingency.

Most people seem to be going there now, though.

Anyway, I'm getting feedback and complaints in emails; it would be easier to have them all assembled in one place before I make the changes (or beg someone to make the changes) to make the thing spiffy.

I do intend to have "Headlines" over there. Trouble is, that requires some coding, and Pixy hasn't been able to do it yet.

Also, in case people aren't getting it -- all the posts that name you, the reader? It's a gag being played, by use of a bit of code available on the new site. If you include the code "[you]" in a post, the system checks each reader's cookies, finds what name he's posting under, and inserts that name instead of "[you]."

So if it seems like a lot of people are naming/insulting you for no good reason -- they're really not. They're insulting a general [you] which is then replaced with your screenname, on your computer only.

Japanese Republican Neoconservatives (Jews, I'm Sure) Run Horrible Ad Smearing Barack Obama as Monkey
— Ace

This aggression cannot stand. These neocon Nips and Bushiddo borscht-enthusiasts have to know that mocking a chimpish politician as a monkey is grossly out-of-bounds.

It's simply not done, Old Man.

Crazed Gun Nut Kills One, Gravely Wounds Another in Subway-Restaurant Slaughterfest
— Ace

The dangers of gun ownership the right doesn't like talking about -- here, for example, two respectable and upstanding robbers busted into a Subway brandishing weapons and terrifying the staff when a 71-year-old vigilante, most likely suffering from "White Rage" and psychopathic dementia, callously opened fire upon them.

A casualty no one mentions -- civility. Not to mention racial justice.

Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger.

"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.

It should be noted that virtually every jurisdiction permits the use of deadly force against those unlawfully offering deadly force themselves, particularly when there is a substantial threat of bodily injury.

I'm pretty sure we need to find a "national consensus" against this racist Wild White West bullshit pretty fast.

Her husband, Ivory Jones, also condemned the media for its portrayal of Lovell's actions.

"I don't condone what they did, (but) I definitely don't condone the news people making him out to seem like they're making a hero out of this man because he shot somebody down," he said.

But Lovell's neighbor said he made the right decision.

"He did the right thing," said Wendi Hill. "I mean, I was glad that it was them that got shot and not him."

Making this shooting all the more poignant -- both men were attending vocational/technical training school, studying Advanced Truck-Hijacking with hopes of one day earning the coveted Electronic Security Deactivation certificate. (America trails the developed world in highly-skilled, highly-prized workers with the technical know-how to disable sophisticated electronic alarms. We import most such workers from China and India, and there aren't even enough H1-B visas to ensure that most "crews" have this key position filled -- resulting, it is conservatively estimated, in a net four point five billion dollar loss in this already-embattled sector of the criminal economy.)

They had hopes and dreams of reaching the upper echelons of armed robbery, perhaps even rising to the level of ganster Triggerman -- dreams now cut short by a lunatic with a gun.

Incidentally, the demented racist spree-killer was an ex-Marine, further proving that you can take a man out of the Marines, but you can't take the murderer out of the man. Sorry, I meant "take the Marine out of the man." I make that mistake all the time.

Thanks to "Rick," who is trying to get all his friends to start calling him Jake "The Snake" Drake, because he's pretty sure he score some serious tail if he's called Jake "The Snake" Drake.

Yeah, good luck with that, buddy. I tried that myself a few years ago. It's a hard sell.

33 Afghan "Rebels" Suffer Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Also Post-Traumatic Death Disorder, But Mostly Post-Traumatic Death Disorder
— Ace

Doctors report their condition as "stable" but "dead."

"Large groupings" of innocent civilians in the kite-flying Khost province were spotted carrying RPPGs (Rocket Propelled Peace-Grenades) and LMGs (Love Machine-Guns), and were heartlessly murdered by coalition troops, most of whom were probably Jews in the first place. So right there, you know somethin's up.

It is estimated that of the 33 people killed, at least 70 were grandmothers and an additional 540 were adorable children with overalls-pockets spilling over with slingshots, frogs, and puckish mischief.

Yet Another Supreme Court Error
— Ace

Justice Kennedy confidently pronounced that only six jurisdictions made child rape a capital offense.

He missed one. A rather big one -- the federal government itself, which added child rape as a death-eligible crime in the Uniform Code of Military Justice in 2006.

Kennedy specifically relied upon the supposed "fact" that federal law did not make child rape a capital offense. Whoops!

It's a bit of a blow that none of the conservative dissenters caught it either -- or at least they didn't say anything. Had they mentioned it, it would have made no difference; Kennedy would have just revised his opinion slightly. So I'll pretend this was a trap laid for Kennedy by Scalia.

The point is, I guess, that facts don't matter. A seventh or eighth or ninth or tenth jurisdiction acting to make child rape punishable by death would have made no difference to Kennedy; he, as usual, reasons backwards from conclusion to premises, so the premises don't matter to him in the least. He's guided by his "conscience" as well as the consciences of European judges.

Hell, five additional states were deciding the issue, and most would have of course made child rape a capital offense. Next year, it might have been ten more. So much for the "national consensus" Kennedy claims to have based his opinion on.

I'm curious as to how the Supreme Court will deal with all these incontrovertible errors of fact it's making lately -- do they just "amend and revise" their remarks like Congressmen do? Or do their errors now have the force of law?

Via Hot Air.

Whoops! Double post. I think I was writing this just as Gabe was posting.

Oh well -- just call it Bonus Bile. How can I afford to provide you with bonus bile, free of charge? Three words: Volume, volume, volume.

Justice Kennedy, Wrong on Facts, Wrong on Law
— Gabriel Malor

Last week I told you about Justice Stevens' factual mistakes in Heller and Hamdan. This week Justice Kennedy is under the microscope in Kennedy v. Louisiana, thanks to the military justice blog CAAFlog.

Dwight Sullivan at CAAFlog noticed that Justice Kennedy flubbed the facts about federal capital punishment. Kennedy wrote that the death penalty for child rapists was only available in six state jurisdictions and not available under federal law. That's not true, and in fact such punishment is a recent occurrence, driving another nail into Kennedy's false claims that the U.S. is trending away from the death penalty for child rapists.

But just two years ago, Congress did enact a law permitting the death penalty for the rape of a child, which makes the number of authorizing jurisdictions seven (Louisiana, Georgia, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and the military), not six.

Section 552(b) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006, 119 Stat. 3136, 3264 (2006), provides that "[u]ntil the President otherwise provides pursuant to" UCMJ article 56, "the punishment which a court-martial may direct for an offense under" the amended UCMJ article 120 "may not exceed the following limits: . . . For an offense under subsection (a) (rape) or subsection (b) (rape of a child), death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct."

Sullivan sounds a little peeved that nether side made mention of the law. When asked, defendant's counsel said "We just assumed it was defunct...We figured if somebody in the government thought otherwise, we’d hear about it.” Sullivan's discovery made it in the N.Y. Times today.

Kennedy's legal problem is that he was more than willing to adopt a squishy standard like "evolving standards of decency." He just refused to admit that the evolution of law in the U.S. is towards executing child rapists.

Nerd Battle: The Great Superhero Debate
— LauraW

Enter at your own risk. Don't touch anything. There could be a booger on it.

"...if Thor were to be the winner, ant man could shrink down and go inside Thor causing him to bash himself with the hammer. But really, superman could fly back in time before they were all created and end them before they were alive. Cloverfield had something very important to say but only aquaman could understand him but he was too busy blowing emo spiderman. So cloverfield got pissed and raped robin. Well, it wasn't rape, just angry sex."

I grew a zit just from reading that.

Thanks to Spongeworthy.

Mustang Gets 110 MPG
— LauraW

Pretty nifty.

"My grandfather had the idea back in the (1940s) that he (could) make a difference then," Pelmear said. "There was quite a need at that time also, with the war going on and everything."

Pelmear, a mechanic in Napoleon, has been tweaking the engine for the past 10 years, squeezing out the maximum amount of power for a minimum amount of gas.

"This will bring back the automotive industry," he said. "They can sell trucks and (sport utility vehicles) and the models that are almost dead at this time."

Pelmear said the engine is 400 horsepower and goes from zero to 60 mph in three seconds.

Video here.

The article mentions a possibility of even tweaking 500 miles out of a gallon of gas.

Next up: Gas stations sold at fire sale prices all across U.S.; India and Pakistan report massive waves of repatriation.

Your MSM at Work [ace]: I feel like a dick casting cold water on LauraW's post, but our skeptical, endlessly fact-checking press provides not a single bit of independent evidence for any of these claims apart from the self-interested say-so of the mechanic.

0-60 in three seconds?

They don't even bother to run a gas mileage test. Which is probably because the guy won't let anyone look under the hood -- so you can't really run a test anyway, because you can't say for certain he doesn't have another, hidden gas tank under there, to make it appear as if the car is traveling a lot further on the gas put into its main tank.

Dig It!
— Ace

I'm glad the video below includes Bernadine Dohrn's disgusting praise of the Sharon Tate murders.

I think the public is assuming this pair's radicalism was of the theoretical, annoy-your-parents symbolic sort. It's not, unless bombing the Pentagon is purely symbolic.

And particularly repulsive is Dohrn's praise for the slaughter of the very-pregnant Sharon Tate (making sure to kill the baby inside her, too, just for fun -- it was a hip, fun, countercultural happening, after all.)

These are Obama's friends. They are his political confreres. They are, as his website has it, merely "fixtures of the Chicago mainstream."

They're also bitterly unrepentant.

How many people do you guys chum around with who praise mass-murder and personally conducted terrorist attacks in the US?

Off the top of my head, I can only think of... zero people I know like that. more...
