Chinese Satellite Snaps Picture of Possible Wreckage of Flight 370
— Ace

The picture was taken March 9, but they've only now revealed it.

Jake Tapper's guest says it's the only lead, but it's a logical lead, as the site of the wreckage is about where one would expect the plane to have crashed.

"It's where it's supposed to be," Peter Goelz, a former National Transportation Safety Board managing director, told CNN's Jake Tapper, noting the "great skepticism" about reports the plane had turned around to go back over Malaysia. "I think they've got to get vessels and aircraft there as quickly as humanly possible."

But there are skeptics that these objects are from flight 370:

Clive Irving, a senior editor with Conde Nast Traveler, said that the size of the pieces -- since they are fairly square and big -- "don't conform to anything that's on the plane."

This Popular Mechanics article discusses how such a large object can just disappear without a trace.

A system that would use satellites to beam an airliner's position and other vital information is not only possible—it's already being used on some planes. In fact, on long-haul routes that fly over the North Pole or the Pacific Ocean, where radar coverage can be iffy, the latest models from Boeing and Airbus are using data link communications to transmit GPS coordinates and status updates.

But the particular Boeing 777-200 flown here didn't have that technology.

The fact that the plane did not offer communications during the presumed tragedy is not notable, it turns out.

"All we know for sure is that a plane went down with no warning or communication from the crew," says Patrick Smith, a pilot for a major airline and the author of Cockpit Confidential. While that would suggest a sudden and dramatic event such as a bomb, Smith cautioned that pilots in an emergency are trained to focus on flying first, with communicating to the ground a lower priority.

I read another article which said a pilot's goals in an emergency were: 1. Aviate 2. Navigate 3. Communicate. Further, an article said that when a plane is far from any tower, communication is not as simple as just picking up a radio and pushing the button; it is often a multi-step process, which might be difficult during a true emergency.

So assuming this was a sudden disaster, it's not strange that the cockpit issued no information to the outside world.

BTW, I've wanted to put up a flight 370 post for days-- but commenters were always ahead of me in the comments! This is the first time I feel like I'm posting something that's reasonably fresh.

About Where It's Supposed To Be: @rdbrewer4 says FoxNews has offered some skepticism on this picture. The debris are only 115 miles from the last known position of the plane. I think he's suggesting that a plane falling from 35,000 feet would move a lot further from its last known position before crashing. He says he doesn't think that drifting on the sea can bridge the gap.

Fresh loans in ChinaÂ’s shadow banking system evaporated to almost nothing from $160bn in January, suggesting the clampdown on the $8 trillion sector is biting hard.
“It seems that rising default risk has started to erode Chinese investors’ confidence,” said Wei Yao, from Societe Generale. “Together with continued regulatory tightening on banks’ off-balance-sheet activity, we are certain this slowing credit trend has further to go and will inflict real pain on the economy.”

6 The Chinese are just trying to fool us about how poor there spy satellites are. Governments are clever that way, when they're not being stupid like we did with the space shuttle the first time we were worried about tile failure. The government reassured us that there was no danger because on 30 or whatever tiles were lost. It didn't take long for someone to say 'Hey, you can count six inch tiles from a 100+ miles away?'. Oops.

It's possible that it took them days to verify that there was something worth checking out. Surveillance equipment is worthless without an algorithm or someone competent to comb through the data collected.

Troubling. 33 Vashta, to make matters worse, there is a suggestion that the ore piles were collateralized (pledged) multiple times. Gold is fixed by commodity groups. Not a conspiracy anymore. Straight-out acknowledged. So the price will be whatever is most likely to screw the retail investor.

Lead is more of an industrial component, so I'm guessing down in sympathy with the other industrial metals if copper returns down. ( It spiked up today. )

123 A plane flys about 5 miles up. If you assume a very generous 45 degree descent, that puts it in the ocean only 5 miles from where it stopped flying and started falling. In reality, it's going to come down a lot faster than that. 115 miles from last position is extremely reasonable depending on how long the wreckage had to drift and how fast the current was moving (5 mph current * 20 hours = 100 mile drift)

It was reported pretty early in the game by the Malaysians that the plane had turned around or their were indications of that and that the sources for that information was their military radar systems as opposed to civilian military systems. Then--it makes perfect sense that they said they needed time because what they had was --pardon the expression--an unidentified flying object--as opposed to had they had before hand via the civilian air traffic control radar which was an-- identified flying object because at that time the plane's transponder was operational and essentially "squawking" it's ID information. And the Malaysian Air Force has tried to explain this to the media. Numerous books have been written about her disappearance, offering a variety of theories that are mutually exclusive. But there are others. There were three British disappearances in the late 1940s that were particularly interesting. Now it is theorized that the plane hit the mountain, triggering an avalanche that buried the evidence and hid it from searchers. Then pieces were gradually transported downhill by the glacier until they were eventually revealed by melting, leading mountain climbers to the crash site. Star Tiger isn't too hard to figure out. It was flying at low altitude at night in bad weather, fighting winds that kept pushing it off course. It likely missed Bermuda, got lost, and ran out of fuel. Star Ariel was more of a mystery. It disappeared while flying at high altitude in good weather during daylight. In that way it wasn't so different from Flight 370. No trace of those two planes has ever been found. Presumably they're both at the bottom of the Atlantic.

One of the earlier videos shows the flight path making a left turn and ending up over the Straits of Malacca when it disappeared. The video that discusses the photo of the 'wreckage' places the crash site on the opposite side of Indonesia in the south China Sea. CNN is nothing but a spout for rumors and half-ass speculation. I wouldn't take anything they report at face value. I don't even watch it when I'm at the airport with nothing to do.

Recall the Turkish DC-10 in France and the United 747 over the Pacific; the latter incident did not cause a crash but the aircraft skin was ripped open and a couple of people lost. A cargo door opening in flight could result in the aircraft fuselage suddenly breaking apart. Then there was the Qantas 747 aircraft where an oxygen tank exploded in flight opening up the fuselage. So structural failures do occur in flight.

399 While I am confident for once that the splodey building in new York was because of a gas leak, I had a bit of a start today when a low flying plane flew slowly over my house and on the underneath was painted "pipeline patrol". It isn't a normal occurrence, first time in the almost 10 years I have lived here that has happened. Makes me wonder if there are some specific infrastructure threats.

It may have been going on for a long time, and you just missed seeing it. A friend of mine used to do that, and I rode along once. Fun trip. Biggest hazard to pipelines is farmers and construction grunts hitting them with digging equipment.

404 The parents of one of the people sucked out of the United 747 fought a battle with Boeing over the cargo door.  IIRC the circuitry was eventually found to contain enough residual energy after use to proceed to partially disengage the locks.

There were at least two DC-10s I think that had cargo doors blow out.  Since the cargo compartment was pressurized, the sudden decompression would collapse the floor of the cabin and take out controls.

407 A problem is that just about everything has happened at least once before, and we have to pick from those past disasters to find a match with this one, with very few hints. MD engineers had a brain fart with the hydraulic controls on the DC-10. Not only did they run hydraulic lines throughout but if one of them broke the entire system lost pressure

423 Pilots are trained to aviate, navigate and then communicate, but that is if the first two can get you to a landing.  If it's a full-on bunker-buster we're-out-of-control moment, once they realize they can't aviate and navigation has no purpose, they'll communicate so the rescue folks know where to look for the smoking hole and bodies.

As for flotsom and jetsam, water at any decent speed might as well be a solid.  Aircraft are lightweight aluminum and built to withstand stresses along the wing root, not from the nose.  If you ram a 777 straight into the water at 400 knots you'll have nothing larger than a child's hand left over.  Take a look at the remains of the flight that hit the Pentagon and there's nothing that resembles an aircraft.  We saw that in nuclear cask tests too -- the plane simply vaporizes as it hits.

At 35K feet you can glide for about a half-hour if there is an engine failure.  That gives plenty of time to determine if you can aviate or navigate.  Thus this plane went into the water suddenly.  Possible reasons are a catastrophic failure that took out the electrics that the pilots would use to communicate, or a pilot (perhaps not the one hired) flying the thing straight into the ocean.

Based upon my limited experience, I'm leaning towards the latter.
