Howdy Y'all, it's Sunday evening which can only mean it's time for the Post Blog Disaster Gun Thread! It's been a wacky week around here, that's for sure! Let's gather 'round in the rubble and begin our weekly discussion of the wonderful world of guns and shooting!

So the left has announced a bunch of new potential gun control measures. Surprise, surprise. We've known it was coming, and well, here it comes. Who knows what will be accomplished through legislation and what will be done through Executive Orders. Either way, it's going to be an infringement on our 2nd Amendment rights. What will be interesting is to see how many choose to ignore whatever comes along. Stay tuned. 

And on the subject of the 2nd Amendment, there was a very good post earlier today with a lot of great discussion on the NRA. Well worth reading if you missed it.

On to happier things. Spring time is here and with the temps warming up, conditions are becoming more favorable for outdoor range time. The ammunition situation is still fluid, but I am getting the impression supply is loosening up a wee little bit. Are you seeing this too? As conditions hopefully continue to improve, give some thought to increasing your personal strategic reserve in the calibers you most frequently shoot.

With that, lets take a peek below, shall we?

Ladies and Gentlemen, do we ever have content for you tonight! In a Gun Thread exclusive report, our pal and delightful 'ette Nurse Ratched relates her encounter with a homeless person on the streets of Seattle, how she defended herself during an assault, and the lessons she learned!

Nurse Ratched Assaulted On Street, Deploys Pepper Spray, Not Late for Work

I had to pepper spray a crazy person in the face this morning, Seems like I'm making this up, but I'm not.

I had just gotten off the ferry and walked up to the crosswalk to hit the cross button. There was a mid 40s white guy blowing his nose and spitting into the garbage can. Nothing too abnormal about that, but my crazy alarm was going off. I did not make eye contact, but after hitting the cross button, I made sure to take a few steps back. He suddenly, and without warning started screaming at me and walking rapidly towards me. I took three steps back and sprayed him right in the face. I always have my pepper spray in my pocket, in my hand when I'm downtown.
Folks on the sidewalk stopped for a second. I got him good in the face and eyes and crossed the street. A garbage truck driver honked his horn, rolled down his window, gave me a thumbs up and kept saying, "GOOD FOR YOU!" I got to work in record time with all the adrenaline pumping through my system. My lungs are no longer burning, but the skin on my face and my lips are. And I can taste it. I feel strangely accomplished.

I'm glad I wasn't relying on a concealed handgun. I would not have drawn it. The streets are busy, cars and pedestrians everywhere and the risk of hitting an innocent bystander too great. I would have been attacked. I had no reservations about spraying him in the eyes and face, however. None at all. I don't know that I could draw a firearm and point it at another person unless they were a) threatening one of my boys, or b) breaking into my home while I was there. I will not be anyone's hero. But I will protect myself.

Funny thing, the next day on the ferry, I was a bit of a minor celebrity. Three women and four men walked up to me and asked, "was that you, yesterday? That all happened so fast!" They wanted to see what I had in my pocket and were online to purchase for themselves while on the boat. We had a bit of a discussion about situational awareness and listening to your "gut." Also, defunding the police seems to be less of virtue signal policy. Everyone is turning against the city council on this one. Hmmmm. I also looked at the women and told them to take their safety into their own hands. I got a lot of nods. One woman even asked if she could walk with me for a couple blocks.

So, I guess the moral of the story is to carry what you will use forcefully and without hesitation. Had I hesitated, I would have been hit hard. Actually, I wasn't scared until after I crossed the street. In the moment, I was calm. But there was no way that guy was going to hurt me. Not. A. Chance.

I feel really good about the experience. And I thank God He was with me and kept me clear headed.

Nurse Ratched goes on to share some of her thoughts the next day.

On further reflection...

In a telephone interview following the incident, Nurse Ratched answered a few questions:

Gun Thread: What is the general area like? Would you describe it as dangerous?
Nurse Ratched: The general area is very busy. I was walking off the ferry dock. The street is wide open. There are shops and restaurants along the waterfront. The Seattle Aquarium is just a couple buildings over. However, in true Seattle style, there is a homeless encampment less than a hundred yards away.

Gun Thread: How far away was the perp when you first felt uneasy? How far away when you decided to spray him? How long did it take you to decide to deploy the spray?
Nurse Ratched: He was spitting into a garbage can about five feet from the crossing signal when I hit it. I tapped the button and moved several steps away immediately. He started screaming about 2-3 seconds after I backed away. He was within five feet of me when I sprayed him. I was ready to spray him BEFORE he charged me, because my "crazy meter" was sounding an alarm.

Gun Thread: Was the perp immediately immobilized? Do you think the product you used was of sufficient strength or potency?
Nurse Ratched: He stopped in his tracks. I got a DIRECT shot to his eyes and mouth. I was able to walk across the street without further hesitation. Didn't even miss the light.

Gun Thread: What is the product you used?
Nurse Ratched: Sabre pepper spray It's the smallest one they have. I keep it in my pocket IN MY HAND and my finger on the button. Seriously. It won't help if it's in my backpack or my purse.

Gun Thread: You said there was no hesitancy. Was there a surreal feeling during or immediately after the event? Did that affect your actions at all?
Nurse Ratched: Somehow I was very calm. Everything developed quickly, but clearly. I knew what I had to do and did it. I walked away and only looked back only to make certain he could not follow me. He was trying to wipe the pepper spray off his face and out of his eyes.

Gun Thread: Is there anything you would do differently if something like this would happen again?
Nurse Ratched: Nope.

Gun Thread: Having been through this once, do you think the experience makes you better prepared should there be a next time?
Nurse Ratched: Absolutely. Feminists talk about "empowerment." This was empowering. I took responsibility for my own safety. No one else was in danger and I continued on with my morning.

Okey-Dokey. Lots to unpack here. First, I'm sure you all share my thankfulness that Nurse R is safe and uninjured and that we're not all offering our thoughts and prayers for her recovery had she not defended herself so capably and been physically assaulted. I have to say I am extremely proud of Nurse R and how she handled herself. It is a shame that we live in a world where crap like this happens, but it does. She wasn't in some dark alley, but rather waiting for a light on a busy street full of people. That these conditions are allowed to exist is reprehensible, but let's back up and look at the steps Nurse R took to put herself in the best possible position for an optimum outcome.

Preparedness
Nurse R was prepared, both mentally and with the tools necessary to defend herself. She understood the threat environment she was transiting; a busy street in a major city with a significant homeless and mental illness problems. She made the conscious decision in advance to be ready to protect herself, and had mentally rehearsed the steps she would take to do so. Once in the environment, she was prepared to act immediately by having the pepper spray ready for instant use, having it in her hand inside a pocket with her finger on the switch. I cannot over-emphasize this. Nurse R was ready to act.

Situational Awareness
Nurse R was aware of her surroundings. Her head was up and she was fully aware of her environment and of the threats contained therein. She was not walking head down looking at her phone with earbuds on. She was aware, identified a potential troublemaker, and put some distance between herself and the threat. As the encounter evolved, she went from DEFCON 2 to DEFCON 1 in an instant, acting without hesitation.

Decisiveness
Nurse R had taken care of most of the go/no go mental process in advance and was able to act instantly. Once an imminent threat was identified, she didn't waste valuable time trying to sort out her thoughts and feelings on the matter and weighing her options. She did not have to fumble around in a bag to find the pepper spray. All of the thought processes were complete except for the deployment of the spray. Once the person violated her airspace in a threatening manner, she was calm, focused and acted exactly as she had prepared herself to do.

Un-Assing The Area
Nurse R nailed the guy and immediately exited the area, slowing only once when safely across the street to make certain the threat had been neutralized. Once she determined she was not being pursued, she proceeded about her business.

And that, everyone, is exactly how that is done.

In speaking with Nurse R, she mentioned her firearm range practice giving her the confidence to defend herself with both lethal and non-lethal systems. I think that's part of the 'empowerment' she referred to. She refused to be a victim, and prepared herself in advance with self-defense in mind. Her range time helped her develop the confidence needed to assess a threat and eliminate it.

Which brings us to my final point. Nurse R chose a non-lethal weapon for protection on her daily walking commute, something suitable for the threat she would most likely encounter; a random assault or street robbery. Had she only been carrying a firearm, she would have significantly limited her options. In this case, she probably would not have been justified in shooting, since the attacker was apparently not armed and the crowded street scene would have placed numerous other people at risk when the shooting started. Having a non-lethal option available also allowed her to act instantly, rather than performing the mental gymnastics necessary to determine if use of lethal force was warranted. Even if she ultimately prevailed in court, she would have spent a ruinous amount of time and money defending herself. She had a non-lethal alternative which perfectly met her needs, and she used it. We can debate the question of lethal vs. non-lethal options until the cows come home and not agree on whether or not it would be justified, and frankly, none of us know how a jury would decide given the facts and circumstances. At the end of the day, nobody ended up dead or seriously injured, and that is the best possible outcome.

Everyone out there needs to do precisely what Nurse R did and prepare for an event such a this, particularly the 'ettes, who might not be able to physically engage an attacker. Please think about this and prepare accordingly. You are the only one responsible for your safety.

Nurse R, so glad that you are safe and that you were able to take care of the threat posed to you, and with non lethal force.
Sadly I do not think  the situation there or anywhere in the US will be getting better anytime soon.  Not as long as Dementia Joe and The Ho are in power and the Dems control Congress.
No range report. Weather permitting I hope to hit the range next weekend to get the rifle dialed in at 100 yards then take it to the 200/300 yard range and see what I can do.

23 Thanks Weasel for the thread.  Nurse R told me about this incident the day it happened. I can only applaud her for being aware and ready to act.  I'm familiar with that area as well and it has gone downhill badly.  Seattle has become such an insane place that if normal people don't act to make changes to the city council soon, it'll become that dystopia you saw in the movies where no one is safe.  That said, I don't see the people there trying to vote their way out. All I can say is, they voted for it. I hope they get it good and hard.

25 Wow, glad to hear how Nurse handled things.  And quadruple head nod at how outrageous it is that things like this are now common - and mostly entirely preventable.

Turns out I just got some pepper spray (Sabre brand) for the boss - she asked for some for her neighborhood walks (crime rate in decades in this neighborhood - especially day-time, street crime - 0.0000000 incidents per millenium).  Got some new stuff for myself too.  Always have it on the belt when biking or blading (mostly for dogs) - have never used it.

AND the boss also seems to like the S&W Model 60.  Last week at the range she shot it well.  And she hasn't even seen the laser sight, which works very well (bought it from a guy - he seems to have dialed in the laser perfectly; at the indoor range I tried it out, rested, single-action - hit the target about exactly where the red dot was).

So, gonna have her practice with my old pepper spray, show her the laser on the revolver, and get back to the range so she can get real comfy with the gun.  Her M1 carbine skills remain solid.

Her solution was pepper spray but pistols are the same. It all takes place in a moment, with distances ranging from fistfight to rock fight.

It's incredible how accurate profiling and instinct is, isn't it?  Almost like 2.5M years of the development of the human brain has shaped it into a well-honed tool to be used for safety.

And how incredible it is that women - everyone really, but especially women - are told not to use it.

Dayum.   Very impressive.   Of course, for someone who obliterates the red ring on a silhouette with regularity, I would have guessed you got the bum in the eyes on the first shot. 
As much as I love the geography and many or most people around here, what the CCP-worshiping city council has allowed my city to become is criminal.   And it is people not as smart, or well-prepared to defend themselves, that take the brunt of the pain.

I loaded a few 30.06 rounds (primers are like gold), attached a scope to my trusty 1917 and loaded it into my car trunk. Drove 45 minutes to the range to zero the scope, and the range was closed. Flooded from the overnight rains. Oh well, I'll try again next week.

54 Good work, Nurse R......I only had to use pepper spray once, but it saved my ass and worked very well indeed.....I keep bear spray by the front door, as well as firearms.  Always good to have less than lethal options around.  While living in a tiny apartment during a temp assignment, I had a double-barrel 12 ga loaded with rubber buckshot.  Did not want to kill any of the fellow tenement dwellers thru over penetration.   Again, good work, oh shining member of the Hoard!!!!   Jasonj, Tucson

Gref, the dock where nurse disembarks is right downtown, and there are always a lot of cops there, mostly sitting in their dark blue Ford Explorers in a no-parking zone.

65 Primers. Where are the primers? The shelves are bare. All normal suppliers are "out of stock." Primers were about $30/thousand. Now, at gunshows, primers are going for $150/thousand. One LGS offered small pistol at  $80/thousand; and had none for shotgun.

67 I did find another 1500 small rifle primers locally for a dime a piece. That was good!! I had a couple of good days at the range and I think I've figured out my reloading problems with the new 6mmARC's. I had to knock the shoulder back a bit in the 6.5 Grendel brass I re-sized.

74 Picked up an AR-7 last week (made by Henry).  What a phenomenal little gun!  Barrel, receiver, and two magazines (three if you leave one in the receiver) of .22LR that all breaks down and stores in a 16" stock that will float for an hour or more.

Comes with height adjustable peep sights and an adjustable front sight for windage, this little booger is more accurate than I am, with the right ammo.  (I use CCI Velocitors, as those work best for my rifle.  CCI Mini-Mags are a close second.)

Highly recommend it as a bugout gun that can fit in a backpack and weighs 3.5 pounds, all for under $300.

78 Last week I finally pulled the trigger (appropriate, huh?) and brought 8 guns to a local gun shop for consignment. Easy to do, avoids state and federal forms (the store handles that), and likely prices are decided ahead of time. I know two rifles were sold in about 2 hours and think the others may be gone as well. The store inventory is as lo. as I've ever seen.

I had grave doubts about selling anything but these were all surplus to my needs. There's only so much time to shoot 30-06 rifles or 22lr revolvers, which is why I finally took the step, I'll let folks know of any difficulties that might happen

MP40's, DPM, 1928A1 Thompsons, and my favourite a FN D BAR. A very good trip. However the sniper stuff prices were ridiculous. I even brought some Gee rand parts.

91 Have to agree about the Model 64. I have the Ruger equivalent. They take some getting used to to be accurate but they are. 38 special is a comfortable round to shoot and, if fired in SD, won't blow out your hearing .

I think that having grips that you like, and more importantly, ones that allow an an automatic and consistent grip, is very important, especially if you are a point and shoot guy like me.  I very rarely to never use the sights, figuring if I had to pull, it would be dark, I'd be scared, and they would be very close anyway.  

Face it, if they are 50 feet or more away, I'm going to run for cover and defy them to hit a rabbiting target.

And that brings me to this delayed "range report". Several weeks ago, now, Nurse Ratched made a weekend visit to the PHX area, and a number of local Morons were invited to go shooting with her and her gracious host, who must go nameless for reasons of OpSec. We were a gathering of six, Nurse R, her host, myself, Quilter's Irish Death, and his buddy Skip, and lurker (mostly) Osprey.

We gathered at a secluded, but actual, range, somewhere south of Mesa, and numerous weapons were fired. I didn't take notes, so I will not attempt to attribute ownership of the various weapons, also, given the crazy political situation, OpSec applies. We began by firing various handguns, and AR-type pistols and carbines. I quite liked firing the AR-15 in .300 blackout. Nurse R put the rest of us to shame firing the Walther P38 at a "christmas tree" type spinning plate target. Then most of us got some trigger time with a Thompson submachine gun, fitted with drum magazine. Big, dirty fun!

Then we moved to a more distant firing position, and tried some rifles at 205 yards. I had great difficulty shooting a .338 Lapua from the prone position. My poor neck just doesn't want to bend back that far. The Barrett M82 was much easier, as the rifle is much taller, and had a magnificent optic on it. Nailing the 10 by 10 inch hunk of armor plate was easy peasy. And every time it went, Bang! a ten dollar bill grew wings and flew away. And some of the participants fired a few rounds from my 1939 Mosin Nagant 91/30. More punishing to the shoulder than either the Barrett or the Lapua.

102 I'm at the point where I'm not doing any shooting unless I can buy ammo and not tap the reserve.  I picked up a couple boxes of filthy dirty but went bang Tula 9mm at close to pre crisis price, and a box of 25acp for a little bit higher.  Gave both the Sccys a little exercise, and popped off a few mags of 25 with my trusty old Beretta Jetfire.  I should have brought the G17 .  Concluded the session burning up a box of 22 shorts (got a deal on a dozen boxes) through the Heritage Rough Rider.

110 So, did manage to go shooting last couple of weekends.  Both times, was up in the hills north of Sultan.  Yesterday, it was even snowing up there, while it was sunny and Spring back home in Monroe.  Shooting in the snow was fun. Reloading in the snow was less fun but better than doing it in the rain.  Wore gloves (Mechanix) and a fuzzy hat and had a great time.
Shooting was mostly .22, my CZ p-07 and CZ-75, both with and without the adapter, with a little Glock 21 shooting as well yesterday.  Targets were mostly small tangerines, which worked great.  Hit a tangerine with a 9mm and it goes splat rather nicely.  If you are targeting fallen tree roots, 45 ACP chews them up real good.
2/3 shooting was with .22, 1/2 with full power ammo.  I can't praise these CZ adapters enough, they really let me practice with what a 'real' gun feels like while not soaking me on ammo costs.

113 My range trip this week was, uhh, unusual. The 1100 yd was closed while they did lots of improvements - backstop berms so you can see your misses (yes, needed), trees and brush trimmed for better visibility and, the piece de resistance, a trench at 513 yards for a moving target! On Friday I bunked work in the afternoon and took my 4wd and my GPS out on the course - geo located most of the targets for ranging. My range finder only is good out to 5-600 yds. Biggest surprise of the day: my optics are good enough that the targets and surroundings look large. IRL, they aren't! And most of the steel is only 12" by 12".  Turns out I'm shooting a bit better than I thought. *humble brag* *but couldn't do it without the Weasel's guidance!*

115 My wife and I met the good Nurse R at a MoMe once and she is one cool and impressive lady!  Thanks for the summary of the encounter.  I watch a lot of videos and situational awareness is key.  As John Correia says, "attention buys you time, and time buys you options!"  
I have two stories of when I was assaulted.  Yes, I am in a relatively rare club.  I'd have to see if I could obfuscate some of the details to preserve my anonymity but still make the narrative meaningful.  
And I agree that ammo availability and prices is highly variable here week to week.  But if I wanted ammo I could buy it.

People also think that somehow authorities are everywhere and can react in an instant to stop a violent crime when in reality, response times are measure in tens of minutes. A lot can happen in that amount of time if you're fighting for your life. 
Listen to your gut and don't wait for someone to save you.

164 Weasel, a wind reading workshop is exactly what I need! I have a new ( inexpensive) spotting scope and junior's hits had a clear bullet trace I could see (but the 6.5 CM is so darn flat it was way below what I expected). I intend to go next weekend and just spend time with the scope looking at mirage and stuff, then try out my range-finding.

167 Having nonlethal options available is definitely a good idea.  I only carry a pocket knife, but in a self defense situation that's likely to do about as much damage as a firearm.  In my defense, though, I almost never go into the shitty cities and do try to be aware of my surroundings.
Been meaning to score a taser for the few times that I do have to go into the hot zone, though.

174 Nurse Ratched - that's a harrowing story, but I'm glad that you had that non-lethal option at hand, and knew exactly when to use it.  A friend's son spent some time in NYC a few days ago, and was robbed in broad daylight, after being in an initially non-threatening situation that escalated quickly (but was probably planned by the perps).  Having that non-lethal option may have helped in his case.  Discharging a handgun in that situation would have definitely been more trouble than it's worth - in NYC I can easily see an innocent victim get put through the wringer.

178 I found an app that works a lot better than a rangefinder for my purposes. I only shoot at stuff that I set up, so GPS Distance meter works great, no distance limit and it has a running total. If you set your shooting position as point A it will give you a current distance until you get where you want to set your targets.

He asked my husband how many rounds I had and he busted out laughing when he told him.  He said Jesus Christ! are you expecting a war?

Probably folks know this but Youtube has an amazing amount of information about any firearm, gear or reloading info you are likely to investigate. The value varies greatly but good info is out there. I took parts I & II a long time ago, and honestly wasn't that impressed.  I think they added the 3rd part shortly after I was there, but did get to shoot on the 1K range in part II.  The problem, as I saw it, was the class sizes were too large.  Again, that was a long time ago, so things might've changed.

190 I forgot that last week I zeroed a Brno Fox .222 and borrowed a friends spotting scope to call for him at the same time. It was a Vortex Viper 20-60. I have been looking at the Vortex Razor for my long range spotting (with the mil reticle to call splash accurately) but the Viper seemed to be very good and I was wondering if the extra $1500 for the Razor was worthwhile. Anyone got any experience with both spotting scopes? Ta muchly.

Situational awareness is key, as well as dispensing with the fairy tale that it can't happen to me. Thought experiments or mental exercises on "what would I do if . . . ." are an invaluable tool. 197 Of note, The pepper spray I used was a stocking stuffer from my oldest son.  He also got me the spray gel.  I did get some blowback from the spray.  My lungs burned for a few minutes.  My skin for an hour or two.

Hmm...a thought occurs to me.  It's not great secret that I'm quite familiar with the inner workings of the 3D printing industry, and I certainly get asked a lot about the guns.  I'm not sure that I got even a single question about that during the Trump years...but definitely before, and now afterward, it's all anyone wants to hear about.  Coincidence?  Nah.  Telling people who only know about Cody Wilson's legal windmill-tilting about a certain someone's fully functional metal 1911 project never gets old, though.  IIRC they put a couple hundred rounds through it, obviously not consumer grade hardware but quite impressive nonetheless.

And on a totally unrelated note, I'll probably be buying or building about a 8x8x5 inch CNC mill in the not too distant future.

233 wow, it accepted the whole tl:dr ! been slowly using up that plastic practice .38 I mentioned a while ago ... scored a really big multi-layer corrugated box out of a dumpster and turned it into a portable backstop 10 layers thick (more than enough to stop the plastic wadcutter) & big enough to use with a B27? full-size silhouette target, which I have been deploying around the house at random intervals - only a few rounds so far, the idea being that it represents a visibly armed intruder; when I see it I draw and fire with minimal hesitation. pretty good results so far, but I find that practice with both the shoulder, and particularly the DeSantis OWB holsters has made me scary quick, even to me.

236 Back to range stuff. I was surprised at the difference between scoped visuals and being out on the range. The 900, 1000 and 1100 target groups looked like they were on the same plateau. Not so. There was a lot of terrain and several ravines between them. When I was raising dust shooting at 1000, it was actshually low and skimming the 900 yard plateau. Live and learn.

241 There doesn't have to be physical contact for an assault to occur.  Battery comes into play when contact is made.  Presumably, you should be able to defend yourself from assault, preventing it from escalating to assault and battery. That advice may or may not get you 90 days in county.

Midway seems to have stuff going in an out of stock, and I think you can sign up for alerts if you see something you're interested in.  Brownells does it, too, IIRC.  The sky is the limit on what you want to spend, but it's hard to beat one of the cheapo Traditions 50 caliber rifles to get your feet wet.

You might have some luck finding kits that you finish assembling, but I haven't looked at those in years.

The latter involves "an unwanted touching", the former is putting a reasonable person in fear of battery. If assaulted, you are generally ok to use proportionate force to defend against being battered. *lots of legalese deleted to avoid boredom* I'd say the pepper spray was spot on. Heh, spot on.

Those are interesting things, sort of like switchblades.  Definitely do your own research, but from what I've read they're legal right up to the point where they're concealed unless your concealed carry permit specifically mentions them.

Well, at least it's not my problem anymore.  While I wasn't happy about losing a great job in that area, it occurred to me at the time that with the big city burning and a bleak forecast thanks to limp-dick local pols, my corporate frenz might have been doing me a favor by removing any incentive I might have had to stick around.  Watching a once decent if disconcertingly liberal state run itself into the ground in the 2010s wasn't my favorite part of the experience, though.

NZFrank.  I have the top end Vortex Razor 27x60x85, Angled Eyepiece scope.  It sits atop a stout Bogen 3040 tripod, with a Manfrotto squeeze-grip, ball head mount.

If you'll recall, up here in the Northern Hemisphere, we had that Saturn/Jupiter "Convergence" late last year?  Well, I set that rig up on my back deck, and the results were incredible.  We were counting individual Rings of Saturn, and the moons of Jupiter were clearly and individually accounted for.

Not only, but in optical terms, the performance was insane.  The moons were perfect wee dots of light.  Not ovalized, not fuzzy-edged, not double-visioned in any way whatsoever.  The COLORS of Saturn and it's rings were astounding. 

The pity was, I did not yet own my Nikon Df DSLR and 'scope adapter. I've remedied that, but I'll never again get to see that image in the glass.

So, I don't know the Viper spotting scope in comparison, but I can damn well recommend the Razor, without one nanosecond's hesitation.  That said, I have the Gen 1 Viper PST, 4x16x50, 2nd focal plane, MOA turrets & reticle, on my AR.  It is also a superb glass.  About 95% of Nightforce or Vortex Razor (with it's 35mm tube diameter) performance, for a fraction of the price.  ONE downside.  It is not as bulletproof as a Nightforce.  ONE Huge Upside.  You can't beat the Vortex LIFETIME (true lifetime) Guarantee.  They HONOR it.

Whatever your choice, you're not going to buy a bad scope.

Being here in California I can't break the law all the time carrying in my vehicle. One thing I keep with me at all times are tactical gloves. Sometimes depending on the area of town or on occasion I get the feeling I should have them, I put them in a back pocket. They're little bulky but at least I have them. It might sound ridiculous because depending on how quick something happens you can't call timeout so you can put your gloves on but sometimes you just get a feeling as nurse ratched did. I keep a pair in both of my vehicles in the event that someone is road raging on me, following me to a gas station or grocery store or wherever. If I can avoid confrontation I will but if I'm basically cornered and I see trouble coming I put them on. I have had to deploy them a couple times. Most of the time in my experience if you square up with someone and they can tell you mean business (and have pissed me the fuck off) they'll think better of it. Put the gloves on and square up and I think it gives the  other person the impression of being "outgunned". Sometimes that might be all thats needed. My job depends on me having healthy functioning hands and if any of you have ever been in a real fight and you hit someone on the head in the wrong place or start wrestling on the ground, you will break something in your hand. The gloves at least give me the comfort of knowing I can swing and hit and not be so choosey or conscience about it. Some of the gloves are a little spendy and protection varies but IMO it is a worthwhile investment

My impression is that you're a fairly fit/athletic sort, so the situation you describe (basically "looking" like an aggressor or predator, not the slowest gazelle in the herd) should offer good prospect of deterrence.

I can think of two cases where I attempted to appear as an undesirable target, simply by expression, alertness, and carrying myself "aggressively".  Don't know if it worked, but nothing happened.

298 Late to the dance, but Nurse R. pretty much did textbook self defense moves.  Kudos. 
Some long backordered parts (m16 style extractor for Rem 700 project, came in plus a new rigid teslong bore scope is also due in tomorrow.  Have the flexible one but rigid borescopes are also useful when diagnosing chambers,  barrels, and throats.
Regarding primers, the best bet is to go to local gun stores that carry reloading supplies.  BTW, there is now an adapter where you can use small rifle primers with your blackpowder rifles.  People are reporting a bit better accuracy and less variability between shots. 
CDNN sports in Abilene TX is one of the places that still has rifles in stock and Aim Surplus in OH has also had some.  80% receivers are in panic buying situation.  But, pick up a Firearms Talk magazine and they have some less traveled vendors for such things.

I can think of two cases where I attempted to appear as an undesirable target, simply by expression, alertness, and carrying myself "aggressively". Don't know if it worked, but nothing happened.

I've only had near-fight confrontations happen twice as an adult, and both times I got REALLY LOUD immediately and drew as much attention to the person as possible, making sure everyone around me knew I was concerned about being attacked and wasn't the aggressor.

And yes, thanks for the glove suggestion.  I've got mechanics gloves with reinforcements at the knuckles for routine pains while working on stuff, but never seen any that were tools for other things.

One reminder, the most likely legislation at the state level would be mag limits.  If you like your regular cap magazines for AR's AK's,and your pistols, you should consider getting some while the getting is good and before panic buying hits. 
Magazines are a wear and tear item for pistols and rifles.   One small advantage for revolvers there.

311 Re Undesirable target - when shopping, sans mask, of course, I wear my "resting bastard face" and it has worked perfectly through yesterday. Store manager approached parroting the NH mask edict, to which I politely and quietly said, "Medical exemption." Good thing she backed off. I would have sprayed her.

321 @290 rhomboid-I am fit and do have the physique that says maybe I shouldn't be f'ed with but times have changed. It's not uncommon to have guys, especially groups of younger ones, that will all pile on you all at once. I'm not talking necessarily pencil necks but guys that you would look at and assess that they could handle themselves easily one on one.
Another thing I've run into is just walking in a mall or your local nightlife type area where guys that quite frankly aren't big enough to do the shoulder bumping/run into you type BS. I'm sizable enough to be a dickhead like that but I was born with manners and I can't stand people that do that shit. If there is room enough for me to move I'll excuse myself and act accordingly. Not nowadays, I've practically tripped myself at times getting out of some clowns way, said something calling them out and they just walk on and ignore you. When I see this type of thing coming I've resorted to just stopping dead in my tracks, stand still and let them go around. Sometimes its gotta be done.
I have a rule and my grandfather taught me this a long time ago. Don't walk around with your head down. Keep your head up, look, make eye contact non-aggressively and keep your damn hands out of your pockets (he hated that) and most of the time people will not mess with you. He taught me situational awareness a long time ago.

351 Six or eight years ago, I was in Boston, near Chinatown in the evening looking for a place for dinner.  As I turned down the street I noticed a few black guys coming and going from a door and one began to meander in my direction.  He was not as large as me and it was clear he intended to shoulder-bump me.  He was not staggering so I am pretty sure it was intentional.  
As a former linebacker and wrestler, I adjusted my shoulder and lowered it just as he arrived and I made a good solid contact with him.  He deflected since I had mass and momentum.  I said nothing but continued to walk though I used my peripheral vision to check for company.  He moved off in the opposite direction without saying anything.  I went to the corner, checked my six, moved toward an area with better light, and entered the first restaurant I saw to make sure I didn't have company.  
Nothing more came of it.  I went back three nights later but I took a different route to Chinatown.  I don't go looking for trouble.

353 One thing; self defense "experts" (I have no idea what their qualifications are) would say she should have called the police to report the incident.
The theory goes that in some cases the potential perp may call the police first and make you the bad guy. I guess it's happened often enough to show up on their radar.
Me? I think I would've walked on since there was no property damage and no other person was involved.  So I agree with what the Nurse did. I just thought I would mention this for the sake of hearing other people comment and for nurse ratched to comment if she's inclined.
Good for you. I have thought myself that I don't like the idea of carry one of my larger caliber pistols. Makes me a bit self conscious. I have no problem carrying my 380. I may also arm myself with some of this pepper spray so as to have an option if the circumstances clearly are better dealt with as a non lethal situation.

355 So my brother has hyperhydrosis in his hands. They sweat all the time. He carries a hand towel with him all the time. I used to travel internationally all the time for work and we got to talking and he told me that I needed to pack a hand towel and a National Geographic magazine with me. And he was absolutely correct. They'll sail right through TSA checks and are great self defense weapons if necessary. At home I carry a CRKT M21-14SFG and a firearm of some sort. The blade usually rides in a jacket pocket with my hand on it or clipped to my front jeans pocket.

356 Sabre is the brand that most police carry. They also make a gel that lets you spray from a distance and it only affects what it makes contact with.
Won't blow back in your face. (this is what the website says.)
I think I would get the gel cause getting spray in my face being older may cause me breathing problems.
Very inexpensive and legal to carry and to use. EXCEPT if you use it to assault someone say who you want to make go away but hasn't done anything that threatened you.
Like they say, it's what the cops use. It's got one of the highest heat ratings.

357 I wish I still had my .38 Ivers Johnson revolver. IJ  put the special in the Saturday Night Special.
Very simple. No swing out for cylinder. Release for wheel axle and pull that out and out comes the cylinder.
I thought I'd get another one so I could carry a quick reload but it got stolen. (dang it)
It was very reliable. Because it was so simple. The timing mechanics were probably the most complicated part of it. No fancy hammer. No Safety. Did have a half cock to prevent a blow from pushing the hammer into a primer.

358 FC sutler had cap’n’ball revolvers in stock at pre-nutso prices last week. They also had muzzleloader rifles. If you dig around the rifle kits are available from several suppliers.  Problem then is finding caps, powder, and projectiles.  I’m down to a dozen or so #10 caps for the pistols but did score a couple hundred #11 magnum for the rifles.  Black powder is a hoot to shoot and the guns are very accurate once you fine tune the load.  Also, most places will still allow  mail order of the guns - the Feds don’t consider them to be firearms.  The usual gang of scum and villainy (looking at you, NY, Mass, NJ, Md) do prohibit that. Given what’s happening in my adopted home state and Virginia, I’ve been introducing friends to the cap and ball guns.

359 Nurse did good. Back in the day, I was an O.C. (pepper spray) Instructor. Nurse did not hesitate.  She sprayed and bugged out. Pepper spray does not guarantee the instant stop of an attacker. It takes three to five seconds for it to affect vision and up to thirty seconds (or until a breath is drawn) to affect breathing. I have been sprayed many times in training it is not instantly debilitating.   A person can easily move twenty feet in that amount of time O.C. begins to work. At the end of class I would chose a person on whom I would simulate a bull rush attack. The successful strategy was to spray and RUN away before I could lay hands on. The only times I have seen someone stop immediately when O.C. is presented is when that person had been sprayed at sometime in the past.  They did not want to repeat the experience. Oh, and since I am doing the wall of text:  if you are carrying a taser and O.C. check your O.C. For the carrier component. Law enforcement went to a water-based carrier a fair number of years ago, because the oil-based carrier would catch on fire if you tased someone after you had sprayed them.  Flaming hobos screaming through downtown Seattle might draw too much attention, but might make the next cookbook.

361 BP primers are out there. If four petal is your thing... or can bet a nipple size for it.
There are reputable mail-order companies that carry and are not listed by ammoseek etc. The hard part is diving deep into google etc to find them.
Same with powder.
Even worse with primers.

There is another successful strategy after spraying an attacker and that is, depending, on the threat presented, and that is to consider the deployment of the O.C. a distraction strike prior to upping the level in your use of force continuum to anything from voice commands, going hands on, batons, or lethal force.  (I think we can skip the voice commands at this point). I will tell you that going hands on after spraying someone is not an option you will want to repeat.
